The Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on Sunday elected Oladipupo Adebutu as its governorship candidate for the forthcoming 2027 gubernatorial election.

Chairman of the Election Committee and national representative, Ariyo Afolabi, made the announcement on Sunday in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

Afolabi noted that after the collation of results from the 236 wards across the 20 local government areas of the state, the sole aspirant, Oladipupo Adebutu, emerged as the governorship candidate of the party.

“The Ogun State governorship electoral panel hereby declares Honourable Oladipupo Olatunde Adebutu as the winner and consensus candidate,” he added.

In his acceptance speech, Adebutu appreciated all leaders, stakeholders, and members of the party for reposing their trust in him.

He appealed to every member of the party to continue to operate within the ambience of peaceful conduct, stressing that it is the only way to reclaim the state.

Adebutu said, “Fellow party members, I humbly accept this call to serve with an enormous sense of responsibility, knowing fully well that the 2027 election is a must-win for us to make yet another historic statement.

“Our victory lies largely in working together assiduously as one united party and people to convince the electorate why we are a better alternative to the failed APC administration.

“I wish to appeal to every member of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ogun State to continue to operate within the ambience of peaceful conduct, which has brought us to where we are today. Peaceful coexistence is the only assurance that can guarantee our reclaiming of Ogun State from the hands of the clueless APC government and its allies,” he added.

Also speaking, a two-term former governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, congratulated Adebutu on his emergence as the party’s candidate for Ogun State, noting that the large turnout of party faithful portrayed hope for the party.

Meanwhile, Ogun State PDP Chairman, Abayomi Tella, said the time for action had come and that the party had already begun preparations.

Tella congratulated the governorship candidate and other winners of the primary, noting that their participation showed genuine commitment to the party.

President Bola Tinubu on Sunday promised to take strong action to protect Nigerians despite the security challenges facing the country.

Tinubu stated that his government has made efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s security system to ensure the safety of citizens.

He spoke at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja while delivering his acceptance speech as the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Tinubu said, “I also recognize the security problems that are still affecting some areas of our cherished country.

“I promise you that I take my duty to protect the lives and property of every Nigerian very seriously.

“Our government has stepped up its efforts to strengthen our security system, support our courageous military and police, and build better relationships with local communities.

“We have invested in intelligence, surveillance, and new equipment, and we are addressing the root causes of insecurity.”

Tinubu said his government is prepared for the National Assembly to amend the Constitution to allow the creation of state police as a matter of national emergency.

He also stated, “We will not stop until we restore peace and stability to every part of our country.

“We are determined, and our goal is clear: a Nigeria where every person can live, work, and dream without fear.”

2027: Ohanaeze backs Tinubu’s re-election, plans for 2031 vice presidency

Apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has backed the re-election of President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.

Ohanaeze said that after careful deliberation and objective assessment, the body affirmed that it is in the best collective interest of the Igbo nation to support the re-election bid of President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

It stated that the approach is aimed at securing the 2031 vice presidency under the All Progressives Congress (APC) and ensuring that the South-East region benefits fully from federal initiatives.

The pan-Igbo organisation reiterated the decisions reached jointly with the South-East Governors’ Forum, the Forum of Former Governors, and South-East serving ministers in January 2026.

According to Ohanaeze, these decisions emphasized that no Igbo candidate, including Mr Peter Obi, should challenge President Tinubu in 2027.

This was contained in a statement issued on Sunday by the Deputy President-General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, and Chief Thompson Ohia, National Spokesperson, and made available to journalists.

“This strategic restraint is intended to allow the federal government to complete ongoing infrastructure projects, create additional states in the South-East, and implement policies that enhance economic development in the region.

“Ohanaeze extends its congratulations to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on his victory in the APC 2026 presidential primaries.

“We also congratulate South-East governors securing re-election in 2027, with special commendation to Rt. Hon. Kingsley O. Chinda of Rivers State for clinching the APC gubernatorial ticket.

“Strategic negotiations have commenced with key political stakeholders, including the Presidency, to ensure that upon the completion of President Tinubu’s tenure in 2031, a devoted Igbo leader ascends to the office of Vice President.

“Prospective candidates of exceptional calibre include Senator Dave Nweze Umahi and Chimaroke Nnamani.

“This underscores that the achievement of this historic objective requires overwhelming Igbo support for President Tinubu in the 2027 elections, thereby consolidating political leverage and ensuring a tangible return on investment for the South-East.”

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has appealed to its presidential aspirants, party leaders and members to remain peaceful and united ahead of the party’s presidential primaries scheduled for Monday.

In a statement released on Sunday in Abuja, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, described the primaries as an important moment for both the party and Nigerians seeking a better political option.

“The ADC remains proud to stand today as the only truly democratic party in Nigeria, because it is the only political party whose choice of presidential candidate is determined through open primaries,” the statement said.

The party said the conduct of members before, during and after the exercise would reflect the kind of leadership culture it seeks to promote.

“We therefore urge all aspirants, their supporters, delegates, and party faithful to conduct themselves peacefully, responsibly, and with dignity throughout the process.

“This election must reflect the values we claim to represent as a party committed to transparency, internal democracy, national unity, and the rule of law,” Abdullahi stated.

He said disagreements are normal in politics but stressed that the main goal should be rebuilding Nigeria and restoring public confidence in leadership.

“At the end of this exercise, there will be no winners or losers within the ADC family. The ultimate objective is to emerge stronger, more united, and fully prepared to offer Nigerians the competent and credible leadership they deserve,” he said.

The party also assured members that adequate arrangements had been made to ensure the primaries are free, fair, transparent and credible.

“History will judge us, not merely by who emerges as candidate, but by how we conduct ourselves in this defining moment. We call on every member of our great party to rise to the occasion,” the statement concluded.
