No fewer than four hostages and a solider were reported killed during a kidnapping incident targeting Chinese expatriates in Magbon Village, Mowe area of Obafemi-Owode Local Government, Ogun State.

DAILY POST had earlier reported that gunmen suspected to be kidnappers stormed the dredging site popularly called Capo in the early hours of Monday.

According to eyewitnesses, one of the military personnel, protecting the people, was killed while another sustained gunshot injuries.

DAILY POST learnt that during the bush-combing exercise, a local hunter supporting the operation lost his life in an encounter with the fleeing criminals.

Confirming the incident, in a statement on Tuesday, the Assistant Director Army Public Relations 35 Artillery Brigade, Idereghi  Akari, noted that the troops in conjunction with the Nigerian Police responded  to the distress call at a dredging site where expatriate workers were engaged in operations. 

Akari stated that a fierce exchange of fire ensued, during which one of the attackers was neutralized and the remaining assailants reportedly abandoned their mission, withdrawing through surrounding forest terrain toward the Ogun River. 

According to the statement, the kidnappers reportedly took five hostages as human shields to evade pursuit by a Quick Response Force deployed as reinforcement.

He disclosed that four hostages were killed by the fleeing attackers before they escaped through the river channel with a boat and one hostage who escaped recounted how the assailants took the body of their dead colleague along with them.

Part of the statement reads, “The incident occurred on Monday, June 8, 2026, when the joint security patrol was ambushed by armed men suspected to be kidnappers while responding to a distress call at a dredging site where the expatriate workers were engaged in operations. 

“A fierce exchange of fire ensued, during which one of the attackers was neutralized. The remaining assailants reportedly abandoned their mission and withdrew through surrounding forest terrain towards the Ogun River, taking five hostages as human shields to evade pursuit by a Quick Response Force deployed as reinforcement.

“The four hostages were later killed by the fleeing attackers before they escaped through the river channel with a boat.”

The army also confirmed that a soldier lost his life during the encounter, while another soldier and two police officers sustained gunshot injuries. 

He added that the deceased soldier and the recovered bodies of the four victims have been deposited at the mortuary of the General Hospital, Sagamu and the injured personnel are currently receiving medical attention.

“Following the incident, the Quick Response Force and other security agencies have intensified patrols and surveillance in the area to restore calm and prevent further security breaches,” the statement added.

Major Akari reiterated the military’s commitment to protecting lives and property, assuring residents that operations in the Mowe axis would be sustained until the fleeing assailants are apprehended.

The peace of the Gyel community in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State was once again shattered on Monday, when gunmen suspected to be Fulani bandits laid siege and killed a resident while another person sustained injuries during the attack.

The National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM), Rwang Tengwong, who confirmed the incident in a statement late Monday, said the victim, who was identified as 36-year-old Shedrack Dalyop, was killed in what could have been a targeted attack as he was one of the leaders of the local vigilante group who had managed to ward off previous invasions by the terrorists.

Tengwong, who described the invasion as another disturbing pattern of repeated violence in the area, stated that the latest attack has further heightened anxiety among residents already grappling with insecurity.

He noted that the body of the victim was recovered after residents were alerted to the attack by the injured survivor identified as Mang Davou, who managed to reach the relatives of Dalyop and reported the attack, which led to the discovery of the deceased.

“The incident which seemed to be a targeted attack as Dalyop was one of the leaders of the community vigilante group which defended the community against attacks by the Fulani bandits, occurred shortly after another similar attack in Sabon Gidan Kanar area the same area, further increasing tension and distrust within the community,” Tengwong said.

“This latest killing has further heightened fears among community members. Residents are worried about the recurring attacks and expect urgent action from security agencies,” the BYM spokesman said.

Calling on security agencies, especially the Operation Enduring Peace and other relevant authorities, to investigate the attack, identify those responsible, and ensure they are prosecuted, Tengwong said the perpetrators must be tracked down and brought to justice.

“Our communities deserve protection, and residents should be able to live without fear of violence,” he added.

Meanwhile, attempts to obtain an official reaction from the Plateau State Police Command were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report, as its spokesperson, SP Alfred Alabo, did not respond to calls and text messages sent to his phones.

The police in Borno State have arrested an 18-year-old suspect in connection with the killing of a young man during a disagreement in Konduga Local Government Area.
The incident was contained in a post shared on X on Monday by security analyst Zagazola Makama.

According to the post, the incident happened on June 6 at about 3:00 p.m. in Konduga when a heated argument broke out between two youths.

“During the dispute, the suspect, identified as 18-year-old Adam Ali Bukar of Galtimari Ward, allegedly stabbed 20-year-old Ba’umara of Duwanti Ward in the chest,” Makama wrote.

Makama stated that the matter was first reported to the police by the Commander of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) in Konduga.

Police officers, led by the Divisional Police Officer, quickly moved to the scene where the victim was rushed to the General Hospital, Konduga.

He was confirmed dead on arrival by a medical doctor.

The body was later released to the family for burial, according to Islamic rites.

The suspect was arrested at the scene, and the knife allegedly used in the attack was recovered as evidence.

The police have since transferred the case to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Maiduguri for further investigation.
