Primaries: Nsukka youths storm NDC headquarters, warn against imposition of candidates
A group under the aegis of Concerned Youths of Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State has staged a peaceful protest at the headquarters of the National Democratic Coalition, NDC, demanding transparency and fairness in the party’s candidate selection process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The protesters, carrying placards with various inscriptions, urged the party leadership to ensure that only credible, competent and widely accepted candidates emerge to represent the party in the 2027 elections.
Speaking during the protest, the convener of the group, Ejiribeofor Omeke, said the demonstration was aimed at protecting the interests of both the party and the people of Nsukka.
According to him, a significant portion of the support base that previously backed the Labour Party and its presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, has now aligned with the NDC.
“Our protest is in the interest of the NDC in Nsukka Local Government. We are passionate supporters of the party in Nsukka,” Omeke said.
He expressed concern over what he described as the party’s inability to conduct proper primaries in Nsukka during its recent exercise, warning that the lack of a transparent process could undermine the party’s chances in future elections.
Omeke urged the party leadership to avoid imposing candidates on the people, stressing that only aspirants with strong grassroots support and public acceptance should be given the party’s ticket.
“We are calling on the NDC leadership to be straightforward and transparent in selecting candidates. Once candidates are imposed, it often leads to failure. The people of Nsukka want candidates who are grounded, widely accepted and capable of defending their interests.
“Such an outcome would not only disappoint the people of Nsukka but also damage the fortunes of the NDC as a political party. What the people of Nsukka are asking for is simple: give us the right candidates.
“Do not present unpopular candidates. Give us candidates who are grounded, widely accepted and capable of fighting for the interests of Nsukka. We want candidates who enjoy public support and do not appear to have been imposed on the people. If this is done, the NDC stands a strong chance of success in the elections,” he said.
The youth leader noted that the party would face stiff competition from incumbent office holders and therefore needed candidates with the political capacity to mobilise voters and secure victory at the polls.
In an open letter addressed to NDC National Leader, Senator Seriake Dickson, presidential candidate Peter Obi, members of the party’s National Working Committee and its Enugu State leadership, the group called for competence, acceptability and electability to be prioritised in the selection of candidates.
The youths also referenced the party’s recent primaries held at St. Theresa Secondary School, Nsukka, alleging that the process failed to meet expectations of transparency and credibility.
“Our people are still reflecting on the painful disappointment suffered when candidates elected under the Labour Party later abandoned the mandate of the people and defected to the ruling party. The youths of Nsukka are determined not to allow such a situation to repeat itself.
“We need candidates who can not only win elections for themselves but also mobilise support that will contribute significantly to the victory of Mr Peter Obi and our party at all levels,” the statement added.
They further argued that while Obi remains a symbol of hope for many Nigerians, the party must complement his popularity with candidates who enjoy strong local support and political credibility.
The group warned that supporters would challenge any process perceived as unfair or lacking transparency through all lawful means available.
The protesters, however, maintained that they were not backing any particular aspirant but were advocating for a transparent process capable of producing candidates with genuine grassroots support and the ability to win elections.

Peter Obi most transformative force in Nigerian politics in two decades – Sam Amadi
Former chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, Sam Amadi, has described the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, presidential candidate, Peter Obi and his Obidient followers as the most transformative force in Nigerian politics in the past two and half decades.

“They should be resolute and press harder in 2027.”

Peter Obi told me he’s more popular than Atiku when I begged him to work with ex-VP – Dele Momodu
A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Dele Momodu, has disclosed the response he got after asking the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, presidential candidate, Peter Obi to work with Atiku Abubakar.
Momodu revealed that Obi turned down his request, stressing that he was more popular than Atiku.
Recall that the former governor of Anambra State was Atiku’s running mate in 2019 under the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
In 2023, Obi moved to the Labour Party where he contested the presidential election and came third behind Atiku of the PDP and President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress, APC.
In an interview with Symponi TV, Momodu said: “Peter is the only politician who has visited my home in London, Ghana, and Lagos.
“In one of the visits, I told Peter, try and work with Atiku and I gave him copious examples that if Mahama was not a VP to Attah Mills, maybe he would never be President of Ghana because he came from the minority just like Jonathan of Nigeria.
“I gave him an example of America that even though Biden was much older than Obama, he still came back to become President because you are able to demonstrate your capacity.
“You have only been a governor of a state but Peter told me that he’s more popular than Atiku, I swear to God. If you see him ask him if I lied against him.”

APC rebuts Iyabo Obasanjo’s claims, respects decision to leave party
The Ogun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has officially rebutted the claims made by former Senator Iyabo Obasanjo in her resignation letter, insisting that she was treated fairly and afforded the same opportunities as every other aspirant during her brief stay in the party.
Senator Obasanjo, in a letter dated May 31, 2026, cited alleged disrespect, intimidation of supporters, and other concerns as reasons for her decision to leave the APC.
Reacting to the development, the party’s Publicity Secretary, Comrade Femi Nuberu, said the APC remains committed to the principles of democracy and freedom of association, noting that every member has the right to make personal political choices.
Comrade Nuberu recalled that the party welcomed Senator Obasanjo into its fold from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) just a few weeks before the commencement of the governorship primary election and ensured a level playing field for all aspirants throughout the process.
According to him, the exercise eventually produced a consensus candidate—an arrangement which Senator Obasanjo publicly acknowledged and pledged to support in the interest of party unity, inclusiveness, and the aspiration of a section of the state that had not previously produced a governor.
The party described several assertions contained in her resignation letter as inconsistent with the realities of her experience in the APC, maintaining that she enjoyed the same rights, privileges and opportunities available to every other aspirant and that the process remained transparent, inclusive and free from discrimination or intimidation.
While respecting Senator Obasanjo’s right to make personal political choices, the APC noted that her decision to leave the party barely weeks after joining it reinforces the perception that her membership was tied principally to the pursuit of the party’s governorship ticket rather than a long-term commitment to its ideals and objectives.
The party observed that Senator Obasanjo was welcomed into the APC shortly before the governorship primary process and was accorded all the rights, privileges and opportunities available to every other aspirant. It therefore found it difficult to justify allegations of exclusion, intimidation or unfair treatment.
The APC further noted that many respected leaders and aspirants who did not secure their desired outcomes during the party’s internal processes have remained loyal and supportive of the party, placing collective interest above personal ambition and continuing to work for its growth and electoral success.
According to the party, politics thrives on loyalty, patience, sacrifice and commitment to shared ideals. It stated that democratic contests inevitably produce winners and losers, but true party faithful are distinguished by their willingness to remain committed to the collective cause irrespective of personal outcomes.
The APC stated that politics is founded on collective ideals, shared aspirations and commitment to democratic processes rather than the pursuit of personal ambitions. It added that many party leaders and aspirants who did not secure their desired outcomes have remained loyal to the party and continue to work for its growth and success.
The party further stated that it was difficult to reconcile claims of unmet conditions and grievances with the fact that its internal processes, including aspects of the governorship primary, were still ongoing at the time of her resignation.
While respecting Senator Obasanjo’s right to associate with any political platform of her choice, the APC wished her well in her future political endeavours and reaffirmed its commitment to unity, inclusiveness, and the continued growth and success of the party in Ogun State.
