Nigeria devolving into one-party state — Makinde

Published

on

Seyi Makinde has expressed fresh worries about the trajectory of democracy in Nigeria, cautioning that the country may be sliding toward a one-party system.

In a newsletter titled ‘The business of governance’, Makinde observed that individuals who resist the idea of Nigeria becoming a one-party state are increasingly facing intimidation, while opposition groups are steadily being sidelined.

He further warned that the nation appears to be drifting into a phase marked by silence, apathy, or disengagement, noting that such a trend could take “us in a direction we may later struggle to reverse.”

Makinde said: “I hope you are well despite the challenges in our dear country. Developments within the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and the African Democratic Congress, ADC, along with recent positions taken by INEC and the judiciary, are raising important questions.

“These are not just political issues; they concern anyone who believes in the future of democracy in our country.

“I am also aware that many of you are watching closely as we approach a transition period in Oyo State. And that you have questions about continuity, leadership, and the future direction of our State.

“We have engaged with a number of credible individuals as part of a deliberate transition process, and I will communicate a decision in due course, one that reflects both the progress we have made and the future we must secure.

“But beyond this, I believe there is a broader conversation we cannot afford to ignore – Nigeria devolving into a one-party State.

“This has led to some people beginning to withdraw quietly from conversations about our future because they feel their voices no longer matter.

“A healthy democracy depends on balance; on the presence of credible alternatives, strong institutions, and the confidence citizens have in the process.

“Today, voices that speak up against Nigeria devolving into a one-party State are being openly threatened. Opposition is being fragmented, constrained, or pushed to the margins.

“Whether one agrees with this concern or not, it is not something we should dismiss lightly. Because when opposition becomes ineffective, accountability weakens.

“And when the government cannot be held to account, the everyday challenges we face become harder to resolve.”

A former Commissioner for Lands and Urban Development in Nasarawa State, Hon. Mohammed Tanimu Sarki, popularly known as Tancy Al-Makura, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) with immediate effect.

The former commissioner announced his resignation in a letter addressed to the APC Chairman of Gayam Ward in Lafia Local Government Area and dated May 26, 2026.

In the letter, Tancy Al-Makura said his decision followed extensive consultations with political associates, stakeholders, supporters, and loyalists across the state.

Although he did not openly attack the party leadership, political observers linked his resignation to the growing discontent trailing the APC’s recently concluded governorship primaries, which have continued to generate controversy and defections within the party.

The former commissioner expressed gratitude to the APC leadership and members for the support, cooperation, and opportunities extended to him during his time in the party.

He noted that serving under the platform of the APC provided him the opportunity to contribute to the development of Nasarawa State and build lasting political relationships.

His resignation comes amid increasing political tension within the ruling party following allegations of irregularities and manipulation during the governorship primaries that produced Senator Ahmed Aliyu Wadada as the party’s candidate.

The development also comes barely hours after former Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar Adamu, resigned from the APC over what he described as irregularities and lack of transparency in the governorship primary election.

The Nigerian Democratic Congress, NDC, says it will resist personal ambitions, strengthen internal democracy and prioritise national service before 2027 elections.

National leader of the party, Seriake Dickson, who stated this on Tuesday in Abuja.

He declared that the NDC would not be turned into a special-purpose vehicle for the presidential ambition of any individual politician.

He was reacting following growing political calculations surrounding Peter Obi and the expected role of Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso within the party ahead of 2027.

The former Bayelsa State Governor emphasized that the party was being built as a lasting political institution driven by ideology, reforms and national interest rather than personal ambition.

“We are not building a special-purpose vehicle for any individual. We are building together a political party that will stand the test of time. We will resist any personal ambition,” Dickson declared.
