I will forgive Gov Yusuf if he returns to me – Kwankwaso

Published

on

Former Kano State Governor and national leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has declared that he remains willing to forgive Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and reconcile with him despite their political differences, insisting that his affection for his former protégé has not diminished.

Speaking in an interview with BBC Hausa, Kwankwaso said the door to reconciliation remains open, stressing that Yusuf was the one who chose to leave their political fold and that he would not turn him away if he decided to return.

“I still love Abba and I didn’t reject him, he is the one that left. So not just Abba, if anyone who left comes back, I won’t be unforgiving. Look at Ganduje, in the many years we worked together, we fell out several times and got back together. That is how politics works,” he said.

Relationship between the two politicians soured after Governor Yusuf defected from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), under whose platform he won the 2023 governorship election, to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), a move that drew sharp criticism from members of the Kwankwasiyya movement.

Kwankwaso argued that Yusuf’s electoral victory was made possible by the strength of the movement. “We picked Abba to contest under the NNPP and we won, but he left to join the people we defeated. Some say he did so because he feared losing his position, but he knows there was no way we would have been defeated in Kano. If that were the case, we would have lost when he contested under our party,” he stated.

The former governor further explained that the movement intentionally fielded Yusuf in 2023 to demonstrate its political influence.

“We did not choose him because he was the most senior or the most educated. We chose him because we wanted to test the strength and calibre of the Kwankwasiyya movement at that time,” he said.

Emphasising the importance of tolerance in leadership, Kwankwaso said leaders must accept differing opinions and embrace forgiveness.

“As a leader, you need to have an open heart. You cannot force people to think the way you do because we all come from different backgrounds and have different perspectives. Without forgiveness, we would not have come this far,” he added.

Primaries: Nsukka youths storm NDC headquarters, warn against imposition of candidates

A group under the aegis of Concerned Youths of Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State has staged a peaceful protest at the headquarters of the National Democratic Coalition, NDC, demanding transparency and fairness in the party’s candidate selection process ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The protesters, carrying placards with various inscriptions, urged the party leadership to ensure that only credible, competent and widely accepted candidates emerge to represent the party in the 2027 elections.

Speaking during the protest, the convener of the group, Ejiribeofor Omeke, said the demonstration was aimed at protecting the interests of both the party and the people of Nsukka.

According to him, a significant portion of the support base that previously backed the Labour Party and its presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, has now aligned with the NDC.

“Our protest is in the interest of the NDC in Nsukka Local Government. We are passionate supporters of the party in Nsukka,” Omeke said.

He expressed concern over what he described as the party’s inability to conduct proper primaries in Nsukka during its recent exercise, warning that the lack of a transparent process could undermine the party’s chances in future elections.

Omeke urged the party leadership to avoid imposing candidates on the people, stressing that only aspirants with strong grassroots support and public acceptance should be given the party’s ticket.

“We are calling on the NDC leadership to be straightforward and transparent in selecting candidates. Once candidates are imposed, it often leads to failure. The people of Nsukka want candidates who are grounded, widely accepted and capable of defending their interests.

“Such an outcome would not only disappoint the people of Nsukka but also damage the fortunes of the NDC as a political party. What the people of Nsukka are asking for is simple: give us the right candidates.

“Do not present unpopular candidates. Give us candidates who are grounded, widely accepted and capable of fighting for the interests of Nsukka. We want candidates who enjoy public support and do not appear to have been imposed on the people. If this is done, the NDC stands a strong chance of success in the elections,” he said.

The youth leader noted that the party would face stiff competition from incumbent office holders and therefore needed candidates with the political capacity to mobilise voters and secure victory at the polls.

In an open letter addressed to NDC National Leader, Senator Seriake Dickson, presidential candidate Peter Obi, members of the party’s National Working Committee and its Enugu State leadership, the group called for competence, acceptability and electability to be prioritised in the selection of candidates.

The youths also referenced the party’s recent primaries held at St. Theresa Secondary School, Nsukka, alleging that the process failed to meet expectations of transparency and credibility.

“Our people are still reflecting on the painful disappointment suffered when candidates elected under the Labour Party later abandoned the mandate of the people and defected to the ruling party. The youths of Nsukka are determined not to allow such a situation to repeat itself.

“We need candidates who can not only win elections for themselves but also mobilise support that will contribute significantly to the victory of Mr Peter Obi and our party at all levels,” the statement added.

They further argued that while Obi remains a symbol of hope for many Nigerians, the party must complement his popularity with candidates who enjoy strong local support and political credibility.

The group warned that supporters would challenge any process perceived as unfair or lacking transparency through all lawful means available.

The protesters, however, maintained that they were not backing any particular aspirant but were advocating for a transparent process capable of producing candidates with genuine grassroots support and the ability to win elections.

2027: Peter Obi told me he’s more popular than Atiku - Dele Momodu

Atiku, Obi

Media entrepreneur, Chief Dele Momodu, has revealed that Peter Obi declined suggestions to align politically with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar ahead of the 2027 presidential race because he believed he was more popular than the ex-VP.

Momodu made the disclosure during an interview on the Naija Unfiltered Podcast, where he recounted conversations he had with Obi regarding the possibility of working with Atiku.

According to him, he advised the former Anambra State governor to consider teaming up with Atiku, citing examples of political leaders who rose to the highest office after serving as vice presidents.

“I told Peter why don’t you go and work with Atiku. Atiku was the person who brought him to national prominence,” Momodu said.

He recalled that Atiku’s decision to pick Obi as his running mate in the 2019 presidential election was not universally accepted within the PDP.

“When Atiku picked Peter, the governors were angry but one thing about Atiku is that once he makes up his mind, he’s a very focused man,” he said.

Momodu said he presented Obi with several examples of politicians who leveraged deputy positions to eventually attain higher office.

“So, I told Peter, I said sir, Your Excellency, try and work with this man (Atiku), then I gave him copious examples. I said if Mahama was not a VP to Prof Atta Mills, maybe he would never be President of Ghana because he came from a minority just like Jonathan in Nigeria,” he said.

“I gave the example of Jonathan, I gave the example in America. Even Joe Biden, who was much older than Obama, still came back to become president because you’re able to demonstrate your capacity.”

The publisher of Ovation International said Obi, however, was not persuaded by the argument.

“You’ve always been a governor of a state but Peter told me he’s more popular than Atiku,” Momodu stated.
