Nigerian Hospitals that offers residency training in Neurosurgery
I decided to write this article to clear the erroneous mindset that some Nigerian Universities offer degree programmes in Neurosurgery. It is simply a reaction to a query I saw on Google captioned: “best university to study neurosurgery in nigeria”.
The truth is there is NO university that offer degree programmes in Neurosurgery in Nigeria or in any part of the world. Neurosurgery is a post graduate training programme and you must be certified a medical doctor first by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN).
Thereafter, your will be required to write a type of medical exam called Primaries, and pass the exam before you can apply for residency training in Neurosurgery. It takes another 6 to 7 years to be certified a specialist or consultant or a professional in Neurosurgery. Becoming a neurosurgeon is a long and tedious journey and not how it most people describe it out there.
Moreso, Neurosurgery as a specialty in Nigeria is under the West African College of Surgeons (WACS) and NOT under the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC). To become a neurosurgeon in Nigeria, it takes a total of 15 years: 6 years in medical school, 1 year mandatory housmanship, 1 year for the compulsory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and 7 years of residency training in any of the accredited teaching hospitals or federal medical centres.
What is Neurosurgery?
According to Wikipedia, Neurosurgery, or neurological surgery, is the medical specialty concerned with the prevention, diagnosis, surgical treatment, and rehabilitation of disorders which affect any portion of the nervous system including the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, and extra-cranial cerebrovascular system. Doctors trained in this field are called neurosurgeons. They do brain surgeries, spinal cord surgeries like laminectomy, ventriculoperitoneal shunts for hydrocephalus and many more.

Now the:
Hospitals that offers residency training in Neurosurgery in Nigeria
As we have already ascertained that neurosurgery is not a university degree programme, I have decided to list out the hospitals that have full accreditation to offer residency training for neurological surgery in Nigeria. They are about 10 in number as at now, 9 of which are teaching hospitals and just one private hospital in Enugu called Memphys. Right now, there is no federal medical centre in Nigeria that train resident doctors on Neurosurgery.
The accredited teaching hospitals that trains doctors to become specialists in Neurosurgery are:
1. University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) , Benin City, Edo State…UBTH has a booming and efficient neurosurgery unit with about 5 consultant neurosurgeons and 4 senior registrars
2. University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, Oyo state
3. Uthman Danfodiyyo Teaching Hospital (UDTH), Sokoto, Sokoto State.
4. Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Lagos State
5. Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH), Kano
6. University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Enugu
7. Obafemi Awolowo Teaching Hospital (OAUTH) , Ife, Osun State
8. Ahmadu Bello Teaching Hospital (ABUTH), Zaria, Kaduna
9. Memfys Hospital for Neurosurgery, Enugu. The only privately owned hospital with full accreditation by the West African College of Surgeons (WACS) for residency training for Neurosurgeons in Nigeria.
10. University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH), Port Harcourt, Rivers state. (Have partial accreditation for Neurological Surgery)
I hope I have been able to educate you about Neurosurgery training and becoming a neurosurgeon in Nigeria? Any questions?
As more universities get accredited, this page will be updated. Stay tuned for the next article where I will discuss the salary of a neurosurgeon in Nigeria.

The where, how and cost of MRI scan in Nigeria 2026
Is MRI done in Nigeria? Where can MRI be done in Nigeria? What is the price/cost of MRI scan in Nigeria? These nagging questions will be answered in this article but before we proceed, you need to know the following about the MRI…..
MRI means Magnetic Resonance Imaging.
It was developed in the 1970 and 1980s.
It is a medical imaging technique used in radiology to form pictures of the anatomy and physiological processes of the body both in health and in diseases.
It uses the principle of magnetic fields to generate images of the organs of the body.
The MRI is a very expensive machine both in purchase and in maintenance.
The cost of an MRI machine ranges for $1.2m to $3m
It is safer than x-rays and CT scans as it does not expose the body to radiations.
There are very few MRI machines in Nigeria.
Only the Delta State University Teaching Hospital (DELSUTH) in Oghara and the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan are the government owned hospitals with MRI in Nigeria.
Most of the MRI scans in Nigeria are done by privately owned diagnostic centres located in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Ibadan, Benin city, Kaduna etc.
The cost of MRI scan in Nigeria was once too expensive but it is becoming more affordable now because of competition.
In Nigeria, the National Health Insurance Scheme do not cover MRI scan.
MRI is not a routine diagnostic tool. Your doctor will most times request for an MRI in cases of suspected brain tumor (head scan) and in cases of back pain especially low back pain. It is also used to follow up patients.
MRI scan is contraindicated(not allowed) in some persons such as patients with cardiac pacemakers, cochlear implants shrapnels and metallic foreign bodies. This is because the MRI is a magnetic device as it will interfere with the function of these implants . Typical example is the cardiac pacemakers.
Where to do MRI scan in Nigeria? What is the cost of MRI scan in Nigeria?
MRI machines are not very common in Nigeria. The scan is mainly done in major city centres.
I am going to list out common MRI scan centres in Nigeria, their addresses, phone numbers and their price lists.

Updated NYSC Corper Nurses Salary & Allowances in all the 36 States of Nigeria
Updated NYSC Corper Nurses Salary & Allowances in all the 36 States of Nigeria, How much are nurses paid during NYSC?
Yours sincerely, Nimedhealth, has decided to look into the salary and allowances of NYSC corper nurses this morning. Just as corper doctors, BSC Corper nurses are an integral part of the health care in Nigeria… NYSC nurses while in camp are responsible for running and taking care of patients /sick Corpers in camp clinic.
Corper nurses work hand-in-hand with corper doctors, corper pharmacists, corper physiotherapists, corper lab scientists, staff health workers etc to take care of the health of fellow Corp members. Apart from running camp clinic, corper nurses administer first aid, give medications, do wound dressing, and even administer vaccines to prevent epidemics in camp.

After the 3 weeks camping, corper nurses are posted to their places of primary assignment across all government approved health centres, big pharmacies, teaching hospitals, general hospitals, big laboratories, health research centres, sick bays in schools and so on..
Now let NIMEDHEALTH talk about the salary of NYSC corper nurses and allowances… How much are corper nurses paid in Nigeria?
Due to the now increased minimum wage, we all know that the Federal Government (FG) now pays every serving Corps member including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and pharmacists the sum of N33,000 as monthly allowance. So, any other amount added to this figure has nothing to do with FG.
Also, you should know that NYSC Doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other health-related Corpers are being paid higher than others.
Now, the question is, who pay them since FG pays equal allowance to all Corps members?
The answer is straight forward, Corper nurses, doctors, medical lab scientists and corper pharmacists receive a relatively “juicy” state or PPA allowance for essential services rendered aside the normal N77,000 Naira allowance from the federal government.
The reason for this is simple, the NYSC Medical corps members work more in taking care of the sick and they are exposed to higher risk of contracting deadly diseases – as we speak, in the midst of a global pandemic of coronavirus, NYSC corper doctors and nurses are still out there taking care of the sick.
There are some health Corp members that had have contracted deadly disease in the past and even died in their line of service. So, they deserve to be treated well and paid better… especially for nurses and doctors.

Resident doctors salary structure in Nigeria – how much are they paid?
Resident doctors salary structure in Nigeria – how much are they paid?
A resident doctor is a medical graduate working and living within the premises of a teaching hospital or federal medical centres. He handles emergencies in the hospitals before the arrival of the consultant.
Resident doctors, together with the house officers, are the life wire of any teaching hospital or federal medical centre. Residency is a medical or surgical training programme that you must undergo to become a certified specialist (consultant). Depending on the specialty, residency takes between 5 – 6 years. All things being equal, the dream of every resident/doctor is to become a consultant/specialist.
Prerequisite for becoming a resident doctor
As earlier mentioned, residency is a training programme for medical doctors or dentists to become consultants. But first you have to be a medical graduate from any one our accredited universities in Nigeria or equivalent medical schools abroad.
Secondly, you must have done your mandatory one year internship/housemanship and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) or have an exemption letter. Finally, you must pass the compulsory National or West Africa primaries (more like entrance exams) before you will be considered eligible for training in any teaching hospital or federal medical centre.
Types of resident doctors
1. Based on specialty: There is the medical residents, surgical residents, radiology residents, family medicine residents, Obstetrics and Gynaecolgy residents, dental, community health resident doctors and pediatric residents. It could be more but these are the common training programmes in Nigeria.
2. Based on seniority: Here we have the junior resident (junior reg or simply reg) and the senior resident (SR). The senior residents receive higher salaries that the junior reg but have the same salary structure. Please note that if a junior reg passes a series of exams called part 1 during training, she/he becomes a Senior Reg while when the SR passes part 2, she/he becomes a consultant (specialist). Their pay rises as they climb the civil service ladder.
It is now time to take about how much a resident doctor earns in Nigeria
Salary Structure of resident doctors in Nigeria
Resident doctors use the CONMESS salary structure. Entry level for residency is registrar 2 who gets about #315,000 naira after tax (take home) with the addition of the new hazard allowance. He/she becomes registrar 1, who now takes home about #430,000 after tax. After 36 months (3 years) and passing Part 1, a junior registrar is elevated to a Senior registrar and Senior Registrar earns between #500,000 – #600,000 after tax deductions. These salaries stated here may be more and this depends on the character of the Chief Medical Director (of the particular hospital) and Associations who are now notorious for unconstitutional and unexplained deductions of doctors monthly wages.
Please be informed that deductions from pension and gratuity and housing mortgage which is now a norm in many teaching hospitals and Federal Medical Centres (constitutional too) will further reduce the take home pay for residents.
Apart from their basic monthly salary, resident doctors have access (supposedly) to other allowances and bonuses which have been highlighted below:
Call duty allowance: This is an allowance paid to medical and dental doctors in federal and state hospitals and clinics. It is earned when the doctors does a call based on the hospital’s call duty roster.
Non-clinical duty allowance: This is paid to doctors that render health-related services at the Federal Ministry of Health or other related Federal Health institutions.
Clinical Duty Allowance: This is an extra allowance which is paid to consultants/senior registrars that are also employed as academic staff in the university in addtion to the clinical service they render at the teaching hospital
Teaching Allowance: This allowance is paid to medical and dental officers in Federal Government parastatals that are engaged in teaching medical students, house officers medical doctors in the lower cadre and other health professionals (student nurses and paramedics) in teaching hospitals and federal medical centres.
Hazard allowance: This is payable to all medical and dental officers due to the risk associated with the profession. Painfully, it used to be a meagre #5,000 naira…the Buhari administration has now increased it to 40,000 naira and it has been implemented as doctors and other health workers have started receiving alerts of the new implemented hazard allowance of #40,000
Rural posting allowance: This is for some doctors who sacrifice the comfort of the urban cities to work in rural communities. There’s also an allowance that comes with this duty that is paid by the Federal Government. Because of this, rural doctors somewhat earn more than city doctors. Unfortunately, CMDs always fail to pay this allowance.
Skipping allowance: An allowance that have caused protracted litigations and industrial action between the federal government and national association of resident doctors (NARD). Finally approved in 2016, money is released yearly to clear the backlog, payment have started in earnest, but some hospitals are still defaulting
Be aware that most residents take up side jobs in private hospitals in order to augment their salaries. It is now a norm.
PS: The increase in the minimum wage from #18,000 to #33,000 which has been fully implemented by the federal government as well as some state governments will further increase the salary of resident doctors howbeit, a 6 percent increase.
