Kwankwaso’s defection a political stunt, overhyped – Lagos APC
Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has reacted to the reported defection of former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to the African Democratic Congress, ADC.
It described the move as overhyped and driven by personal ambition rather than national interest.
In a statement issued by its spokesperson, Hon. Seye Oladejo, the party expressed skepticism over attempts to portray the development as a major political shift, insisting that a closer look suggests otherwise.
The Lagos APC alleged that Kwankwaso’s decision to switch parties is tied to his long-standing demand for a presidential or vice-presidential ticket, describing the move as a calculated effort aimed at advancing personal political goals.
According to the party, the defection does not reflect ideological alignment or commitment to governance, but rather a strategic move rooted in self-interest.
The statement also questioned the strength of the Kwankwasiyya movement, claiming it has weakened over time due to the exit of key stakeholders, including prominent political figures in Kano State.
It argued that the perceived influence of the former governor has been exaggerated, adding that political relevance should be measured by the ability to sustain alliances, build trust, and deliver results.
The APC chapter reiterated its commitment to what it described as disciplined and principle-based politics, rejecting what it termed opportunistic defections and self-serving political actions.
It further maintained that Nigerians deserve leadership focused on national development rather than individual ambition, warning that such political moves could distract from governance priorities.
The statement concluded that Kwankwaso’s defection should not be seen as a significant gain, but rather as a development that raises questions about the motivations behind political realignments.
The statement reads: “While some are eager to portray this move as a seismic political realignment, a closer examination reveals a narrative driven more by ego than by principle.
“Senator Kwankwaso has long publicly declared that any defection on his part must guarantee him a Presidential or Vice Presidential ticket.
“This defection, therefore, is less a genuine commitment to national interest or ideological alignment, and more a calculated exercise in self-aggrandizement. It is a political transaction designed to satisfy personal ambition, not to advance meaningful governance or serve the Nigerian people.
“Moreover, the vaunted Kwankwasiyya movement, often presented as a formidable grassroots force, has long been in tatters. Its abandonment by key stakeholders, including the Kano State Governor and other prominent leaders, laid bare its internal weakness and declining relevance.
“A leader whose so-called movement cannot retain its core supporters is hardly the national game-changer some would have Nigerians believe.
“It is becoming increasingly clear that Senator Kwankwaso’s political influence has been overstated. What is being sold as a strategic realignment is, in reality, an ego-driven, opportunistic maneuver.
“It is a reminder that political prominence is not measured by name recognition or past office, but by the ability to sustain alliances, inspire trust, and deliver results.”

2027: Abati predicts what will happen with Kwankwaso’s move to ADC
Veteran journalist and former presidential aide, Reuben Abati, has said the defection of Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to the African Democratic Congress, ADC, could significantly reshape the opposition landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on The Morning Show on Arise Television on Tuesday, Abati noted that Kwankwaso’s move, alongside his supporters from the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, has strengthened the ADC and positioned it as a coalition platform for key opposition figures.
Abati emphasized the strategic importance of Kano State in presidential elections, noting its 44 local government areas and large voter population, describing it as a critical battleground, alongside Rivers and Lagos states.
He added that Kwankwaso, regarded as a dominant political figure in Kano, could significantly influence the dynamics of the 2027 race following his defection.
The analyst, however, raised questions over the internal dynamics within the ADC, particularly regarding the party’s presidential ticket.
He noted that Kwankwaso has long expressed presidential ambition, and queried whether he would secure the party’s ticket, emerge as a running mate, or be part of a broader political arrangement.
Abati also referenced ongoing speculations about a possible alliance between Kwankwaso and Obi, while questioning how such a development might affect the political standing of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar within the party.
He said: “Dr Rabiu Kwankwaso has now moved with his NNPP and Kwankwansiya supporters to the ADC.
“What has happened with that movement is that the ADC has been strengthened, and it now has a collection of, you know, frontline opposition figures. You have Peter Obi there. You have Rotimi Amaechi there. You have you Atiku Abubakar also there.
“And Kano, as I’ve stated previously on this platform, is a very important platform in Nigerian elections. You are talking about 44 local government councils. You are talking about a large proportion of voters.
“There are some states that you need to win in this country if you want to be president. Kano is one of them, also Rivers, and Lagos.
“And now you have the most prominent politician today in Kano state joining the ADC.
“He was supposed to have joined the APC. We were told that there were conversations, but then his godson, the governor of the state, joined the APC before him.
“Kano state is going to be a major battleground in 2027. However, Dr Kwankwaso has always made it clear that he wants to be president of Nigeria.
“Now, would they give him the ticket? Will he become a running mate to another person? I’ve been seeing people saying ‘PitaKwa’ 2027, suggesting that he will be a running mate to Peter Obi of the ADC. Is that going to work?
“Is that going to play out? Where does that leave Waziri Adamawa, our former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, will he also just sit back and allow ‘Pitakwa’ in the ADC?
“So we’re just seeing the early moments of the drama, and there’s going to be a lot of drama, either from the politicians themselves or from the entertainment”.

Let’s set aside differences, work together – Peter Obi on Kwankwaso’s defection to ADC
Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, has called for unity among opposition forces following the defection of former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, to the African Democratic Congress, ADC.
In a statement shared on X on Tuesday, Obi said Kwankwaso’s move to the ADC marks a significant development in efforts to rebuild Nigeria’s democracy.
Obi disclosed that he visited Kano on Monday at the invitation of Kwankwaso, describing him as an elder brother, and noting that the visit coincided with the former governor’s decision to join the party.
He stressed the need for opposition parties and “well-meaning Nigerians” to set aside their differences and unite in addressing the country’s challenges.
He said: “Yesterday, Monday 30th March, I returned to the North’s Commercial nerve centre, Kano, on the invitation of my dear elder brother, Senator, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso @KwankwasoRM, whose decision to join our party marks yet another significant step in the collective effort to rescue and rebuild our democracy and dear nation, Nigeria.
“As I have consistently maintained, this is the time for all opposition forces and well-meaning Nigerians to set aside their differences and work together in unity of purpose.
“We must move beyond the politics of division, ethnicity, religion, and region, and embrace the politics of competence, character, capacity, compassion, and commitment to a better Nigeria.
“The task before us is not about winning elections alone; it is about rebuilding institutions, restoring confidence in governance, and securing a better future for our children.”

2027: APC’s plan to use Wike to destroy PDP already working – Don
A Professor of Communications at Baze University, Abuja, Abiodun Adeniyi, says the plan of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, to use the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, to destroy the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, is already working.
Prof Adeniyi made the statement on Monday while fielding questions in an interview on Arise Television’s ‘Prime Time’.
He was reacting to the national convention of the PDP held at the MKO Abiola national stadium in Abuja on Sunday.
He stated that Wike’s support for the APC and President Bola Tinubu has been there since 2023, noting that it had become more stabilised.
According to him, it appears as though the PDP will not be a factor in the 2027 general elections.
“APC’s plan to use Wike to destroy the PDP is already working. And it’s even becoming stabilized and much more sustained going into next year’s election.
“Wike has not hidden the fact that he doesn’t want PDP to present flag bearer that is potent enough to challenge President Tinubu. He is not mistaking about it that he wants to support the President,” Adeniyi said.
