SGF-George-Akume

ABUJA: Secretary to the Government of the Federation SGF, Senator George Akume, on Wednesday led a high-powered delegation of North Central All Progressives Congress APC stakeholders to formally endorse President Bola Tinubu for a second term.

The endorsement was the highlight of the North Central APC Congress held in Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital.

Spokesman of the SGF, Yomi Odunuga in a statement said the motion for adoption, moved by Akume and seconded by Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State, received a unanimous voice vote from a crowd of governors, ministers and party chieftains, effectively making the North Central the first geopolitical zone to officially consolidate behind the President’s re-election bid.

Addressing the assembly, Senator Akume described the North Central as the “glue” that maintains Nigeria’s unity.

He praised the zone’s governors for their “exceptional performance” and noted that the zone remains a stronghold of progressive governance across Benue, Nasarawa, Niger, Kogi, Kwara, Plateau and the Federal Capital Territory FCT.

“Nigeria is moving towards another election cycle; with the calibre of politicians and grassroots leaders I have seen here, I have no doubt that when votes are counted in 2027, the North Central will deliver the highest number of votes,” Akume declared.

Despite his optimism, the SGF warned party faithful against complacency. “Do not sleep; you must toil and sweat as if we control only 10 states, so that our victory will be huge and indisputable,” he charged.

Akume also noted positive shifts in the national economy, citing recent data from the Central Bank of Nigeria.

He pointed specifically to the rise in foreign reserves to $51 billion as a “huge mark of achievement” for the Tinubu administration.

Speaking in the same vein, Governor Sule noted that federal policy reforms have significantly boosted the fiscal capacity of states. “As a result of these reforms, some of us are carrying out projects without borrowing a penny,” Sule remarked while seconding the motion for the President’s adoption.

‘I remain Labour Party chairman in Nasarawa’ – Ombugu denies suspension

The chairman of the Labour Party in Nasarawa State, Alexander Ombugu, has rejected claims of his suspension, insisting he remains the legitimate leader of the party in the state.

Speaking during a press briefing in Lafia, Ombugu dismissed the reports as baseless, describing those behind the move as individuals falsely parading themselves as members of a caretaker committee.

He maintained that the said group lacks recognition from both the party’s national leadership and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

According to him, the alleged caretaker committee is attempting to exploit the situation for personal gain, particularly by targeting political aspirants ahead of the party’s primaries.

“Their aim is to create confusion and defraud unsuspecting aspirants seeking to contest under the party’s platform,” Ombugu said.

He further argued that the party’s constitution does not provide for the establishment of a caretaker committee, questioning the legitimacy of the group’s emergence.

Ombugu also raised concerns that those involved have been reaching out to ward and local government party executives, who were duly elected during the party’s congresses, as well as other stakeholders, in a bid to create division within the party.

He warned party members and supporters across the state’s 13 local government areas to avoid any dealings with the group, urging them to remain loyal to the recognized leadership.

Ombugu called on security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Department of State Services, and the Nigerian Army, to investigate the activities of the group and protect the public from possible deception.

He added that the party had conducted its ward, local government, and state congresses in line with constitutional provisions, with the processes monitored by INEC and security agencies.

“We followed due process, submitted the names of elected officials, and received official acknowledgment from INEC,” he stated.

Despite the internal dispute, Ombugu expressed confidence that the Labour Party would overcome its current challenges and emerge stronger ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He also reaffirmed the composition of the state executive, listing himself as chairman, alongside other officials including Bulus Sakks (Secretary), Esther Arishi (Treasurer), and Isiaka Okpu (Financial Secretary), among others.

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Nasarawa State has suspended its State Chairman, Adamu Bako Ninga, over allegations of gross misconduct and anti-party activities.

The decision was taken during a meeting of the party’s State Working Committee (SWC) held on March 25, 2026, following what members described as extensive deliberations on the chairman’s conduct.

In a suspension letter signed by the State Secretary, Kafas D. Kaura, the party accused Ninga of actions that contravene its constitution.

“You are hereby suspended in view of multiple actions and inactions inconsistent with the provisions of the party constitution,” the statement read in part.

The PDP outlined several allegations against the chairman, including leaking sensitive party information to rival political groups, high-handed leadership style, and taking unilateral decisions without consulting the SWC.

Other claims include his alleged failure to convene crucial party meetings and involvement in activities considered detrimental to the party’s interests.

According to the party, Ninga is to serve a one-month suspension pending the outcome of a disciplinary investigation.

The SWC also directed him to immediately hand over all party property in his possession to the deputy chairman.

The party stated that the action was taken in line with Section 57(3) of its constitution, adding that further measures would be determined after the disciplinary process is concluded.

The All Progressives Congress has told opposition parties to stop disputing the espected outcome of the 2027 general elections and instead focus on the 2031 polls, insisting that its mandate remains valid.

The All Progressives Congress National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, made the statement on Tuesday, March 25, 2026, in Abuja, while reacting to continued opposition disputes over the 2027 general election outcome.

He said, “the opposition must accept the reality of the election and move forward rather than dwell on what he described as settled matters”.

He went further to say that “The 2027 elections have been concluded and the mandate freely given to our party by Nigerians is not in doubt, those still agitating should channel their energy towards preparing for 2031.”

He added that endless disputes over a concluded election do not serve the interest of democracy, stressing that the ruling party remains focused on governance and delivering on its promises.

Mr Morka further urged opposition parties to adopt issue-based politics, noting that “constructive engagement”, not distraction, is what the country needs at this time.
