NSRS CONCLUDES 87TH SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE IN BENIN, SETS STRATEGIC AGENDA FOR NIGERIA’S SURGICAL WORKFORCE

Benin City, Nigeria — July 2026: The Nigerian Surgical Research Society (NSRS) has successfully concluded its 87th Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference in Benin City, Edo State, bringing together leading surgeons, researchers, educators, policymakers, and trainees from across the country and beyond.

The conference, hosted at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), focused on one of the most pressing issues in Nigeria’s healthcare sector: the future of the nation’s surgical workforce.

This year’s theme, “Surgical Workforce 2030: Training, Retaining and Task-Sharing in the Nigerian Context,”guided two days of intensive deliberations, scientific presentations, and policy-driven discussions. According to the Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee, Professor Stanley Ukadike Okugbo, the theme “strikes at the very heart of the structural headwinds confronting healthcare delivery in Nigeria today,” highlighting the challenges of brain drain, uneven workforce distribution, and evolving surgical needs.

In his presidential address, Prof. Afeyodion Akhator, President of NSRS, emphasized the urgency of strengthening surgical training programs, improving retention strategies, and adopting safe, evidence-based task-sharing models. He noted that the outcomes of the conference “will influence the direction of surgical education, workforce planning, healthcare policy, and patient care for years to come.”

A major highlight of the event was the keynote lecture delivered by Professor Peter Ndidi Ebeigbe, immediate past President of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria and Consultant to the World Health
Organization. His address provided a comprehensive roadmap for building a resilient and future-ready surgical workforce, drawing on global best practices and Nigeria’s unique healthcare realities.

The conference featured multiple scientific sessions, exhibitions, debates, and a pre-conference workshop. Delegates presented high-quality abstracts spanning trauma care, oncology, gastrointestinal surgery, surgical

education, and innovations in clinical practice. Participants were also encouraged to experience the cultural richness of Benin City, described in the brochure as “one of Africa’s most historic urban centres and the cradle of the ancient Benin Kingdom.”

The 87th AGM also marked a significant leadership transition for the Society. Members elected a new executive committee to steer NSRS into its next phase of growth, including preparations for the Society’s landmark 50th anniversary in December.

Is it good to parboil beans before cooking?

One mistake I see people make with beans is PAR BOIL straight from raw.

Beans is one of the heavily sprayed legumes for pest control, par boiling in hot water will melt everything and they will penetrate further into the beans while you’re parboiling it.

is it good to parboil beans before cooking
Is it good to parboil beans before cooking? Read this

You want to SOAK first, let whatever on the surface leach into the water you soaked it in.

Allow the beans to EXPAND in water so it can release all the anti Nutrients that have been concentrated on the surface during drying and processing then storage.

Compare the physical look on your beans before and after soaking and see what im saying.

It looks plumpier and cleaner on the surface.

You can soak overnight for even better result…

Soak your beans for couple of hours before cooking to take the toxins out.. drain that caramel water out..

Then rinse couple of times more to remove any residual irritants before you cook.

Also beans contain over 5 complex sugars which is why people always suffer indigestion with beans…

Soaking will soften the complex sugars and make digestion easier….

Also soften the skin which is where the insoluble fiber is .

So again, SOAKING BEFORE COOKING not PARBOILING First!!

Please DONT ADD SUGAR TO your beans, there are Complex Sugars in beans already.

Toothpick side effects: What are the disadvantages of toothpicks?

Toothpick side effects: What are the disadvantages of toothpicks?

I can technically think of potential risks regarding nearly every medical specialty, including ophthalmology, ENT and urology.

Toothpick side effects: What are the disadvantages of toothpicks?
What are the disadvantages of toothpicks?

They may look harmless but can be surprisingly dangerous. Accidental ingestion (often unnoticed) lets the sharp ends perforate the GI tract—most commonly the ileum, duodenum, or sigmoid colon. This can cause peritonitis, abscesses, sepsis, or even injury to nearby organs like the liver. Wooden ones are hard to spot on plain X-rays, so CT is often needed, and endoscopic or surgical removal may be required.
Be extra careful with finger foods, club sandwiches, and appetizers.

Why doctors dont find the use of toothpicks amusing

Toothpicks are more dangerous than they look.

1. Accidental toothpick ingestion is uncommon but can be life-threatening because the sharp ends can pierce the gastrointestinal tract.

2. The most frequent sites of perforation are the ileum, duodenum, and sigmoid colon, leading to peritonitis, abscess formation, or sepsis.

3. Many patients don’t remember swallowing the toothpick, making the diagnosis easy to miss.

4. Wooden toothpicks are poorly visible on plain X-rays, so CT scan is often required if ingestion is suspected.

5. A migrating toothpick can injure nearby organs, causing liver abscess, pancreatitis, fistulas, or even vascular injury in rare cases.

6. Endoscopic removal is preferred if the toothpick is still within reach. Once perforation occurs, surgical intervention may be necessary.

7. An unexplained acute abdomen after eating finger foods, club sandwiches, or appetizers should always raise suspicion for an ingested toothpick, even if the patient denies swallowing one.

You’ll be surprised how many toothpicks are accidentally swallowed, with potentially catastrophic consequences.

Why do Male footballers wear “sports bras” during matches?

The “sports bras” male soccer players wearing are usually not bras at all. They are GPS performance tracking vests. They are electronic, for GPS tracking their positions in the pitch

Why do Male footballers wear
Sport bra worn by Neymar

The black elastic vest fits tightly around the chest, which is why it resembles a sports bra. It contains a small device between the shoulder blades that collects performance data.

It helps coaches measure things like:

Distance covered during a match or training.

Top speed and sprint frequency.

Acceleration and deceleration.

Heart rate (when paired with a heart-rate sensor).

Player workload and fatigue, helping reduce the risk of injury.

Teams analyze this data to:

Decide when a player should be rested.

Monitor recovery after injuries.

Improve fitness and training plans.

Compare performance over time.

players wear these vests in:

Under their jerseys during training.

In some matches, if the competition allows GPS tracking devices.

During warm-ups before games.

So, despite the appearance, they’re high-tech monitoring equipment, not sports bras.

Other names:
People usually colloquially call it sports bra, but it ain’t a bra
It has plenty names, yo’ can call it

* GPS Tracking Vest
* Performance Tracking Vest
* Athlete Monitoring Vest
* Player Tracking Vest

Summary:

These garments are not bras, but specialized electronic performance tracking vests worn by athletes. The tight crop-top design holds a lightweight GPS tracking pod securely between the shoulder blades.The pod tracks precise physical metrics like total distance, top speeds, acceleration, and heart rate.
