Celtic interim manager Martin O’Neill has already hinted that he could be looking for a little more physicality from his side during his time in charge of the club.
Celtic are unexpectedly in the hunt for a new manager after they confirmed on Monday that Brendan Rodgers had resigned from his position. With Celtic playing against Falkirk in the Scottish Premiership on Wednesday night, The Bhoys have opted to appoint O’Neill as a caretaker manager, who will be joined by former Celtic player Shaun Maloney.
The Glasgow giants currently sit in second place in the table, but they are already eight points behind the leaders, Hearts. Derek McInnes’ side defeated Celtic 3-1 at the weekend, increasing their advantage before Rodgers opted to leave his position.
O’Neill Hints at Celtic Change he Will Focus on
O’Neill recently spoke out about Celtic, just a few days before he took over as caretaker manager of the Glasgow club. The former Nottingham Forest boss has hinted at one change he could look to make during his time in charge, questioning the physicality of the squad.
“Hearts are a different kettle of fish. They are strong, they have got a bit of backing, and they are physically strong. Celtic can still play some beautiful football but you have got to add to that by being a bit physical. When teams are physical against you, you have got to be able to do that. Celtic just need to settle down. They have lost their way a little bit, Hearts are riding high, a long way to go.”
Whether O’Neill will be afforded enough time to change the physicality of the Celtic squad remains to be seen, as he’s only in caretaker charge as it stands. It’s unclear whether Celtic will look to keep him on for the remainder of the season or quickly hire a new manager, but the physicality is likely something he will try and drill into the players during his spell.
O’Neill will be in charge of the Glasgow outfit as they face Kilmarnock in the Scottish Premiership on Wednesday. Celtic also face rivals Rangers in the Old Firm Derby on Sunday, and it will be interesting to see whether O’Neill remains in the dugout for that game.
