12 Chelsea Signings Andre Villas-Boas Made Look Remarkable Now
Andre Villas-Boas is regarded by many as one of the worst Chelsea managers of the Roman Abramovich era. Recruited on the back of Carlo Ancelotti’s brutal dismissal, Villas-Boas arrived at Stamford Bridge with a ‘mini Mourinho’ reputation, having followed in his compatriot and former boss’ footsteps in succeeding at FC Porto.
However, it quickly became apparent that Villas-Boas couldn’t muster the same magic as the ‘Special One’ in west London and was ultimately sacked just nine months into his tenure.
With the Blues on the brink of exiting the Champions League and marooned in fifth place in the Premier League at the time of his dismissal, it’s no wonder that Chelsea fans don’t look back on Villas-Boas’ reign with much joy. But surprisingly, there was an overwhelming positive that came from what most fans would agree is one of the most negative periods to unfold while Abramovich was in the boardroom.
That’s the fact that Chelsea’s recruitment under Villas-Boas was so remarkable that it’s still stunning to look back on all these years later. It seems unlikely that the Blues’ business could have been so eye-catching during what was nothing short of a nine-month nosedive but, believe it or not, Villas-Boas’ time in west London was one populated by superlative signings.
At least, if not superlative in the immediate aftermath of their arrival, certainly superlative when viewed through the wing-mirrors of hindsight. And while it’s impossible for us to know exactly how much of a role Villas-Boas personally had in the acquisitions, that doesn’t make it any less interesting that they all occurred during his stewardship.
However, before we get too carried away with ourselves, you need to know what we’re on about, so be sure to check out every major signing that Chelsea made while Villas-Boas was in charge down below.
Roman Abramovich’s Life is Now Different After Selling Chelsea
Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich was forced to sell Chelsea in 2022 and his life has changed quite considerably since then.
Thibaut Courtois
Current club: Real Madrid
What a way to kick off the list. Not only did Courtois win the FA Cup, League Cup and two Premier League titles with Chelsea further down the line, but the mighty Belgian has also established himself as one of the finest goalkeepers of his generation.
Courtois left Stamford Bridge for Real Madrid in 2018 and now boasts two Champions League titles, the Yashin Trophy, a World Cup Golden Glove award, three La Liga crowns and a top 10 finish in the 2022 Ballon d’Or. Now in his 30s, Courtois will surely go down as one of the greatest goalkeepers in football history when he eventually hangs up his gloves.
Oriol Romeu
Current club: Unattached
Neither a great signing nor an inherently bad one, Romeu might not have made a big impression at Chelsea across just 33 outings, but he did go onto establish himself as a Premier League stalwart with seven years at Southampton.
After impressing at Girona, Romeu made the move back to the club where it all began for him: Barcelona. The veteran midfielder signed a three-year contract with the Catalan giants. He spent the 2024-25 season back on loan at Girona, before returning to Barcelona, who decided to terminate the 34-year-old’s contract by mutual consent.
Romelu Lukaku
Current club: Napoli
Lukaku’s return to Chelsea might have gone up in flames, but the reality of the situation remains that the Blues won the race to sign one of the most exciting young strikers in the world back in 2012.
And with over 100 Premier League goals, 89 strikes for Belgium and hero status at Inter Milan and now Napoli, having inspired both clubs to Serie A glory, Lukaku undoubtedly ranks as one of the premier goalscorers of the last decade. He wanted to become a Chelsea legend, but for one reason or another, things never worked out for him in west London.
Juan Mata
Current club: Melbourne Victory
An instant success that Blues fans still reminisce upon with fondness to this day, Mata collected Chelsea’s Player of the Year award in each of his full seasons at the club. He played 135 times and scored 33 goals before joining Manchester United for a then-club record fee of £37.1 million. He spent eight years at the Red Devils before moving onto Galatasaray.
Now 37 years old, the universally-popular Spaniard is currently plying his trade for Melbourne Victory in Australia. If Jose Mourinho hadn’t returned to Chelsea in 2013, it’s very likely that Mata would have spent a lot longer at Stamford Bridge.
Ulises Davila
Current club: Unattached
Ah well, not all of Villas-Boas’ signings could be unadulterated hits with Davila, just 20 years old at the time of his arrival, never making a senior appearance for the Blues. The attacking midfielder has gone on to play for numerous clubs across the globe since departing Chelsea in 2015.
He has played in Mexico with Santos Lugana, India with Delhi Dynamos (now Odisha Football Club) and New Zealand with Wellington Pheonix. He most recently turned out for Australian outfit Macarthur FC but is currently a free agent at the age of 34.
Raul Meireles
Current club: Retired
An underrated buy, this, with Meireles arriving off the back of being named PFA Fans’ Player of the Year at Liverpool and duly making 45 appearances in his only full season for Chelsea, famously scoring in the Champions League quarter-finals. He won the Champions League and FA Cup in his only full season with the Blues.
The Portuguese midfielder spent four years at Fenerbahce before hanging up his boots in 2016.
Sam Hutchinson
Current club: AFC Wimbledon
Re-signed from an early retirement brought about by injury, Hutchinson managed two further senior appearances for his boyhood club before departing in 2014.
Now in his mid-30s, the versatile defender now finds himself at AFC Wimbledon after spells at Nottingham Forest, Vitesse, Pafos, Sheffield Wednesday and Reading.
Kenneth Omeruo
Current club: CFR Cluj
Omeruo might never have pulled on the famous blue jersey in a first-team match, but he’s still enjoyed a successful career. The Nigerian defender joined Romanian outfit CFR Cluj in 2025 following stints with Leganes and Kasimpasa.
He’s been a key player for his country since making his debut in 2013. Omeruo has amassed 69 caps for the Super Eagles at the time of writing and was part of their triumphant Africa Cup of Nations side in the same year he made his first outing.
Gary Cahill
Current club: Retired
Another signing that should not be underestimated. Cahill made the move to Chelsea in 2012 when he joined in a £7 million move from Bolton Wanderers. The English defender ended his Chelsea career seven years later as club captain with almost 300 appearances to his name, winning eight major honours including the Champions League.
He had spells with Crystal Palace and Bournemouth before hanging up his boots in 2022.
Lucas Piazon
Current club: Wieczysta Krakow
A curious swing and a miss with Piazon astonishingly spending nine years on Chelsea’s books despite only actually ever playing three times for the club and missing a penalty in his solitary Premier League outing.
Piazon, 31, now plays for Polish side Wieczysta Krakow following a spells with AVS and Braga in Portugal. He also spent some time on loan at Brazilian side Botafogo.

Crystal Palace Eyeing Man Utd Winger Jadon Sancho
Crystal Palace are exploring a move to sign one Manchester United star ahead of the summer transfer window.
The Eagles will be preparing for a window in which they’ll be looking to back a new manager.
Oliver Glasner confirmed earlier in the season that he would be leaving the club in the summer, with just one game remaining in charge of the capital club (Europa Conference League final this week) before Glasner embarks on a fresh challenge.
Although Palace have been on an excellent run in Europe, their Premier League form has left a lot to be desired.
The Eagles finished in 15th place, so they will be looking to bring in reinforcements in order to improve domestically next season.

Crystal Palace Plotting Man Utd Move
According to a report from Sports Boom, Crystal Palace are one of the sides interested in making a move to sign Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho in the summer transfer window.
Sancho’s contract is set to expire this summer, and with no new offer on the table, it looks as though he will be heading through the exit door.
Sancho spent last season on loan at Aston Villa but struggled to cement himself as a guaranteed starter.
A host of clubs are showing an interest in securing his signature, including those from the Premier League, while Sancho would love to remain with Villa.
Remaining with United certainly feels unlikely for now, but it’s unclear where he could end up heading into the 2026-2027 season.
Wages Could be Issue for Palace
Although bringing in Sancho on a free transfer seems like a financially viable deal for Palace, his wages could be a major stumbling block.
Reports have claimed that Sancho is currently earning £250,000 a week at Manchester United, which would no doubt make him comfortably Palace’s highest earner.
Whether the England international would be willing to drop his wages remains to be seen, but he may be forced to if he’s going to find a move in the Premier League.
Sancho’s form over the last few years doesn’t warrant the current wages that he’s earning, and it could be a big issue for multiple clubs.

Tottenham Hold Talks to Beat Liverpool to Kennet Eichhorn
Tottenham have held talks to sign one player who is being actively pursued by Liverpool ahead of the summer transfer window.
Beating Liverpool to signings is certainly not going to be easy for Tottenham in the upcoming window, after they narrowly avoided being relegated from the Premier League.
The North London club are going to be without European football next season, which makes it more difficult for them to attract players, especially against sides that are in the Champions League.
Spurs are going to have to be clever with their recruitment. If they are targeting young talents from around the world, they have to offer them more of a pathway to first-team football than their rivals.

Tottenham Hold Young Startlet Transfer Talks
According to a report from Team Talk, Tottenham have held talks with Hertha Berlin youngster Kennet Eichhorn ahead of the summer transfer window.
The report claims that Liverpool are one of the leading contenders to sign him if he decides to make a move to England this summer, but Tottenham are waiting patiently.
According to Sky Sports earlier this week, Liverpool opened talks to sign the German youngster, who has a release clause in the region of £10m.
The 16-year-old wonderkid, described as a ‘special’ talent by scout Jacek Kulig, does plan on heading through the exit door in the summer transfer window, but it remains to be seen whether he’s keen on a move to England.
Tottenham Could Struggle in Eichhorn Race
Beating Liverpool to the signing of Eichhorn certainly won’t be easy for Tottenham heading into the summer transfer window.
Interestingly, the German youngster wouldn’t be eligible to play in England just yet due to his age, meaning it would likely be a pre-agreed signing for the future.
If Eichhorn is going to make a decision now, then Liverpool is undoubtedly the more attractive prospect, considering Tottenham were almost relegated this season.
A host of other clubs are also in the race to secure his signature, so it could be a difficult deal for Tottenham to pull off due to the competition.

Michael Jordan Named the Only NBA Player As Good as Him
To many fans who have followed the NBA, Michael Jordan is still viewed as the clear greatest basketball player ever. It’s a reputation that Air Jordan has carried ever since his dominance throughout the 1990s, even with legendary names like Kobe Bryant and LeBron James entering the conversation.
Jordan’s obsession with winning, combined with his demand for excellence, created a standard very few players have ever reached. The GOAT debate has lasted for decades, but Jordan’s championships, accolades, and individual brilliance continue to make him the benchmark for greatness.
Because of his competitive mindset and confidence, Jordan rarely appeared to believe anyone operated on his level. That mentality became part of the aura that surrounded him throughout his career.
Michael Jordan Once Acknowledged an NBA Equal
According to former Chicago Bulls teammate Craig Hodges, Jordan privately admitted there was another NBA player talented enough to be considered on par with him, though, he also believed there was one key difference separating them in the public eye.
“Not every great athlete is marketable like that, and they have just as much talent.
“I remember having a conversation one time. It was like four of us, MJ included. And the conversation came up about Clyde Drexler. And MJ said this, and I quote: ‘Clyde Drexler is just as good as me. He just don’t know how to play the game.’ Do you follow me? And we ain’t talking about basketball.”
Jordan’s comments suggest Drexler never fully embraced the business side of being an NBA superstar during the late 1980s and early 1990s. As basketball exploded in popularity across the United States, elite players became global celebrities whose faces appeared everywhere, from commercials to magazine covers.
Jordan helped pioneer that movement by partnering with Nike and transforming himself into a worldwide brand. His rise off the court only amplified the attention surrounding his performances on it.
If Drexler had leaned more into the commercial opportunities surrounding the NBA at the time, he may have enjoyed a similar level of fame to Jordan. Whether the iconic Portland Trail Blazers guard even wanted that spotlight is another discussion entirely, but by the mid-1990s, Jordan’s brand had become larger than basketball itself.
MJ’s Pick Remains One of NBA’s Most Overlooked Legends
Widely regarded as one of the best shooting guards in NBA history, Drexler’s legacy will always be connected to Jordan’s. Both players dominated the backcourt during their era, but the latter’s championships and overwhelming media attention often pushed the former’s achievements into the background.

Drexler possessed a similar level of athleticism and explosiveness to Jordan, while also being an elite scorer in transition and in the half court. His smooth style of play earned him the nickname ‘Clyde the Glide’, and he was later selected for the legendary 1992 USA Olympic squad, famously known as ‘The Dream Team.’
In The Last Dance documentary, the Bulls icon discussed his rivalry with Drexler, saying in classic Jordan fashion: “Clyde was a threat. I’m not saying he wasn’t a threat. But me being compared to him, I took offence to that.”
Michael Jordan Named the 5 Most Underrated NBA Players of His Era
Jordan even gave credit to players who have criticised him…
Despite becoming a 10-time All-Star, Drexler’s position as a shooting guard during Jordan’s era limited his opportunities for more All-NBA First Team selections, with only one making its way onto his resume. Still, he captured an NBA championship with the Houston Rockets and finished his career averaging more than 20 points, five rebounds, and five assists per game.
Considering everything he accomplished, Drexler has a strong case to be viewed as one of the most underrated stars in NBA history. Among dedicated basketball fans, however, his impact and greatness continue to receive the respect they deserve.
