Football is the most universally popular sport in the world and attracts more television viewers around the world than any other sport. With such a level of scrutiny in the world of football nowadays, it’s no wonder that some of its greatest players have become some of the most famous names in the entire world.

Today, there is so much money in the sport that some of the most elite players make even more money through their brand deals and sponsorships than they do from the gigantic weekly wages they receive from their respective clubs. The more their brand increases, the more famous they become.

David Beckham was arguably the first footballer whose fame extended far beyond his footballing career, and he is still repeatedly in the limelight despite retiring over 10 years ago. There are numerous reasons for a footballer to become a genuine global superstar, and Beckham’s appealing looks, coupled with his heroics in an England shirt meant he ticked almost every box.

30 Best Footballers in the World (2025)

We rank the best 30 footballers in the world right now – in order.

15

Marcus Rashford

Barcelona and England

marcus rashford

It would have been hard not to include Marcus Rashford’s name in a list of the world’s most famous players. Although the Englishman had been going through a difficult period on the green – he has since turned things around in a loan spell at Barcelona right now – he is nonetheless one of the Kingdom’s true darlings.

He owes this reputation as much to his history and career as a footballer as to his humanitarian actions, and his fight to enable disadvantaged children to live in decent conditions has been going on for many years. A role model, both on and off the pitch.

14

Luis Suarez

Inter Miami and Uruguay

Luis Suarez celebrates scoring for Barcelona.

While there is no question that Luis Suarez‘s stock has greatly fallen in the last few years, he is still unquestionably one of the most talked about footballers of the 21st century, and not always for the right reasons. In spite of a truly glorious career, which has included well over 500 senior goals, it is the Uruguay international’s scandals that make him stick in the mind so much.

Suarez disgraced himself at two consecutive World Cups, firstly denying Ghana the chance to become the first African team to reach the semi-finals of the competition after deliberately handling on the line in 2010, and then at the following tournament, biting Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini, marking the third time he’d bitten a fellow player on the football pitch. He was also accused of racism by Manchester United‘s Patrice Evra in 2011, so while he may not be the most liked footballer of all time, he is certainly one of the most notorious.

13

Karim Benzema

Al-Ittihad and France

Karim Benzema may no longer be in the spotlight at Real Madrid, and doesn’t have the opportunity to shine on the stage of the Champions League, but he is nonetheless one of the – French – players most appreciated and followed on the planet. It has to be said that the Ballon d’Or 2022 winner is doing everything he can to maximise his visibility.

His followers can continue to track his adventures in Saudi Arabia, where he has been playing for the past year and a half and continues to showcase his striking talents under the colours of Al-Ittihad, by posting lifestyle videos embellished with mysterious quotes on his social networks.

12

Harry Kane

Bayern Munich and England

Harry Kane celebrates scoring for England.

For a long time, Harry Kane was one of the biggest faces in the Premier League, consistently challenging for the Golden Boot at Tottenham Hotspur before leaving for Bayern Munich in the summer of 2023. After nine years in the English top flight, he scored 213 goals, which places him second behind Alan Shearer in the list of all-time top goalscorers in the competition.

However, it’s Kane’s performances for England which make him a household name in world football. He is the Three Lions’ all-time record goalscorer, after surpassing Wayne Rooney in March 2023, and has captained his country since 2018, scoring important goals at two World Cups and one Euros.

11

Heung-min Son

Los Angeles FC and South Korea

Heung-min Son celebrates scoring for South Korea.

For a long time, Harry Kane was part of a two-pronged attack at Tottenham alongside Heung-min Son, who has made waves in East Asia for his performances in the Premier League over the years. The forward moved from his native South Korea to Europe in 2010, playing for Hamburg and Bayer Leverkusen in Germany before joining the Premier League with Spurs in 2015.

Son scored 126 goals in 324 Premier League appearances, and he became the first-ever Asian player to win the Golden Boot in the 2021/22 season. He is a national icon in South Korea, captaining his country since 2019 and earning over 130 caps, as well as receiving the Cheongnyong Medal, the highest order of merit for achievement in sports, in 2022.

10

Erling Haaland

Manchester City and Norway

Erling Haaland taps the Manchester City badge on his chest.

It’s quite hard to believe that Erling Haaland is still only 24, given his formidable scoring record. The Norwegian forward started making headlines at the age of 19 with Red Bull Salzburg and was quickly snapped up by Borussia Dortmund, where he continued to shine, particularly in the Champions League.

In the summer of 2022, Haaland signed with Premier League champions Manchester City, and in his first season, he helped them win their first-ever treble, scoring 52 goals in 53 matches, and breaking the Premier League record for most goals in a single season. He is arguably the best striker in the world right now, with 270 goals in 325 senior appearances, and also serves as one of the faces of Nike.

9

Jude Bellingham

Real Madrid and England

A smiling Jude Bellingham points to the Real Madrid supporters.

Despite the fact he is only 22 years old, there is no denying that Jude Bellingham is one of the hottest properties right now, and he will surely be even higher on this list in a few years’ time. The attacking midfielder burst onto the scene at the age of just 16 with his boyhood club, Birmingham City, who retired his no.22 shirt after he made a £25m move to Borussia Dortmund in July 2020.

Bellingham made his senior England debut just a few months after leaving for Germany, and was arguably the Three Lions’ best player at the 2022 World Cup, when he was still only 19. His form earned him a nine-figure move to Real Madrid in the summer of 2023, and he has excelled in his first season in Spain, as well as becoming the new face of the Adidas Predator, which has greatly boosted his brand exposure.

8

Cole Palmer

Chelsea and England

It has taken Cole Palmer less than two years to establish himself as one of the Premier League’s true stars. Named Chelsea’s Player of the Year and a member of the 2024 England Championship’s Team of the Year, the England striker has quickly established a solid reputation in the eyes of British and international observers alike.

A popularity to which his ‘Cold’ goal celebration, regularly used in view of the extraordinary performance of its inventor, has largely contributed. It has even become a registered trademark. And to think that the international with 11 caps to his name is only 22 years old. But where will it end?

7

Lamine Yamal

Barcelona and Spain

Lamine Yamal
Lamine Yamal

Rare are the players barely 18 years old who can boast of being as popular as Lamine Yamal. In fact, there may be none in the world. Regarded as one of the brightest stars in world football, the Barcelona winger continues to impress fans around the world.

An indisputable starter for the Catalan club and the Spanish national team, which he helped to win at Euro 2024, Yamal is a true star of the game. And anyone who can predict how far the teenager will go, whose limits are still unknown, will be very clever. Only time will be able to tell.

6

Mohamed Salah

Liverpool and Egypt

Mohamed Salah celebrates scoring for Egypt.

While Son is revered in South Korea and East Asia, Mohamed Salah is truly idolised in Egypt and across all of Africa. The forward is widely considered to be the best African footballer of all time, and his dazzling performances as part of Jurgen Klopp‘s all-conquering Liverpool side have made him one of the most recognisable sportspeople on the globe.

After failing to make it at Chelsea early in his career, Salah returned to the Premier League with Liverpool in 2017 and won the Golden Boot in his first season, with 32 goals, a league record at the time. He has gone on to score 236 goals in well over 380 appearances for the Reds, and has helped them win both the Premier League and the Champions League.

Arsenal Make Contact to Sign Brazil Star Danilo Santos

Published

By

Arsenal are ready to bolster their midfield options this summer, and they are now in contact over a deal to sign another Brazil star alongside Bruno Guimaraes.

The Gunners have made the Newcastle United captain their top target for the window, and the 28-year-old has informed the Magpies that he wishes to leave the club in order to make the switch to north London, with a £60m bid being prepared.

But now it has emerged that he isn’t the only Brazilian that Mikel Arteta is looking at to bolster his options in the centre of the pitch, with talks underway for one of his international teammates.

Arsenal Hold Talks to Sign Danilo Santos

According to O Dia, via Sport Witness, Arsenal are one of the clubs who have been in talks over a deal to sign Botafogo star Danilo Santos.

Santos, who was previously at Nottingham Forest, has enjoyed a successful spell back in his homeland and was part of Carlo Ancelotti’s squad for the World Cup this summer. He managed just 44 minutes over the five games, making four substitute appearances, but couldn’t stop them being eliminated by Norway in the Round of 16.

Botafogo had been hoping that he would continue his good form in the tournament in order to raise his asking price, but a lack of game time put a stop to that.

Arsenal are understood to have been in talks with the player’s camp for several months, and have been keeping a close eye on his situation.

Botafogo are currently valuing Danilo at around £30m, and now are waiting to find out if interested clubs are going to make their attempts to sign the midfielder concrete or not following the World Cup.

Arsenal Don’t Need Danilo

Mikel Arteta waving to the Arsenal crowd

Arsenal showed last season that their squad is among the strongest in world football, and they were on the brink of a historic league and Champions League double.

Should they sign Guimaraes, he will join up with Martin Zubimendi, Declan Rice, Mikel Merino, and Christian Norgaard as senior options for central midfield. Norgaard may well leave, but Danilo doesn’t need to come in, because Myles Lewis-Skelly showed he is more than capable of making that position his own too.

Arsenal don’t need to do lots of work on their squad, and they shouldn’t spend money or add players for the sake of it. Danilo doesn’t improve them, so this feels like a deal to avoid at this stage.

Romano says Arsenal will need to pay £90m to sign Bruno Guimaraes

Published

Arsenal already know how much they will have to pay to sign Newcastle United star Bruno Guimaraes amid a bombshell informal transfer request. The Gunners are hoping to sign a new number 8 and a left-winger at a minimum this summer as they look to take the next step in their evolution, especially in Europe.

Newcastle star Guimaraes has been linked, but Arsenal’s chances of striking a deal were impacted by Tottenham signing Guimaraes’ midfield partner Sandro Tonali. Newcastle also lost Anthony Gordon this summer, leaving them with lots to do.

But on Wednesday it emerged that Guimaraes had asked the Magpies to leave, with his clear preference being Arsenal. That will have excited Gunners fans, but there are many more steps to be ticked off before a deal can be done.

Romano issues fresh Guimaraes to Arsenal transfer update

Newcastle United's Bruno Guimaraes celebrates vs Crystal Palace via Reuters

Transfer guru provided the full context to the Guimaraes situation on his YouTube show on Wednesday evening. He said: “My understanding is on the player side, Bruno Guimaraes wants to go to Arsenal. Bruno Guimaraes has clear desire to go to Arsenal, and personal terms would not be an issue. So, Bruno wants to go to London and wants to go to Arsenal. Then Bruno Guimaraes, from what I understand, didn’t tell Newcastle something in Alexander Isak story style, like one year ago, ‘Sell me or I’m not gonna stay here’.

“Bruno Guimaraes wants to be respectful with Newcastle. If Newcastle can reach an agreement with Arsenal, Bruno will be happy to go to Arsenal. If this doesn’t happen, Bruno Guimaraes will not create problems for Newcastle.

“So it’s a different attitude by Bruno..Bruno is not saying sell me or I’m going to create issues, that’s really important to mention. But Bruno wants to go to Arsenal, and now what is going to happen next? My understanding: sources involved and close to the story say that a transfer fee maybe around 90million could be the beginning of the discussion. Arsenal, from my understanding, are not offering 90 million at least at this stage, so it has to be negotiated.”

Arsenal may face transfer conundrum with Guimaraes

Morgan Rogers

Arsenal have spent huge money over the last few transfer windows, and they will naturally have to tread carefully when it comes to Profit and Sustainability rules Having become a profit machine during their success of late, the Gunners can still spend big money, but they will need to balance their spend, at least partially, with sales.

The question is whether they can afford to spent £90million on Guimaraes and then go and spend a similar – or even greater – total on a winger. The Gunners like Morgan Rogers, but he could cost £130million, and if they end up paying that money, a £90million deal for Guimaraes is likely out of the question unless they can sell one of their more expensive and important players. It’s also worth keeping in mind that both Guimaraes and Rogers – or whichever attacker Arsenal go with – are also going to be expecting huge wages.

Tottenham Preparing Offer to Sign Rafael Leao

Published

By

Tottenham Hotspur have already completed six signings in what has been a remarkable summer transfer window to date, but they are far from being finished.

Tottenham completed the impressive free transfer signings of Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi early on, with the experienced Premier League duo joined by Jan Paul van Hecke and Martin Dubravka as Roberto De Zerbi completely reshapes his defensive line.

Spurs’ next business was even more impressive though, as they beat off competition from the biggest clubs in the Premier League to land Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali in an astonishing double midfield swoop, with West Ham United and Newcastle United receiving a combined £185m for their players.

With half-a-dozen new faces arriving at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, departures are also expected following successive 17th-place finishes in the English top flight, with Cristian Romero, Luka Vuskovic, Richarlison and Djed Spence among the players who could complete transfers away from north London.

Tottenham’s new transfer focus in terms of incomings is now further forward, as they look to bolster a frontline that will be without Randal Kolo Muani next term following a disappointing season-long loan spell from Paris Saint-Germain.

A new winger and striker could arrive, with the left-flank the particular area the club is looking to strengthen.

Rafael Leao Agrees to Join Tottenham

AC Milan winger Rafael Leao publicly confirmed earlier this summer that he wants to explore a new opportunity away from the San Siro, following seven years with the Serie A giants.

The Portugal international, who will be on his way home from the World Cup after his nation were beaten by Spain in the round of 16, is a target for Saudi Arabian clubs, but his real desire is to move to the Premier League.

According to journalist Daniele Longo, Leao is willing to wait for a move to Tottenham this summer and is ready to say yes to linking up with De Zerbi in the English capital.

Leao Would be a Savinho Upgrade

Savinho in action for Manchester City via Reuters

While Pep Guardiola has always waxed lyrical about Savinho, his lack of starts and minutes in general last term sum up a largely underwhelming City career to date.

The Brazilian would arrive at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with Premier League experience in tow, but he is clearly far from the finished article after a season where he contributed four goals and three assists in 36 appearances in all competitions.

At 22 years of age, the forward has time on his side, but we also know that De Zerbi likes players who will do a great job for Spurs right now.

Step forward Leao, who has been doing it at one of the biggest clubs in Europe for seven years now, in both Serie A and the Champions League.

While his consistency levels have dropped over the last season or two, Leao continues to exhibit his ridiculous pace and trickery on a regular basis.

De Zerbi is said to want to add speed to his attacking line, and there won’t be many better options on the market, and for a reported decent price in the modern era, than the ‘world-class’ Portuguese forward.
