4 Superstars Maurizio Micheli Discovered Ahead of Arsenal Move From Napoli

Published

on

Arsenal are closing in on the appointment of Napoli chief Maurizio Micheli, and the head of scouting for the Italian club has a track record for discovering some fantastic talents from around the world.

GIVEMESPORT senior correspondent Fabrizio Romano recently confirmed that Micheli has agreed to join Arsenal as part of their recruitment team under Andrea Berta. Romano suggests that a move to Arsenal is now imminent, while also praising the job he’s done at Napoli in recent years.

Micheli was appointed as head of scouting at Napoli in 2018, rejoining the club after a spell at the Serie A outfit earlier in his career. Micheli has been with Napoli for over seven years now, but he looks set to make the move to the Premier League.

As mentioned, Micheli has a track record of discovering talents, and we’ve taken a look at some of the standouts that the new Arsenal man had a helping hand in.

Kalidou Koulibaly

Back in 2014, Napoli brought Kalidou Koulibaly to the club, a fairly unknown defender from Belgian side Genk. The Senegalese centre-back has gone on to have an illustrious career since then, and he ended up playing 236 games for Napoli before moving on to Chelsea after around eight years with the Italian club.

Koulibaly was undoubtedly a huge success for Napoli, with president Aurelio de Laurentiis suggesting a few years ago that he was the best defender in the world. Laurentiis also confirmed that Napoli had rejected three offers in the region of €90m for the defender.

Speaking on Koulibaly’s move to Napoli, his former agent, Bruno Satin, confirmed the deal was thanks to Micheli.

“The first person to spot the defender was Maurizio Micheli: he was the first to point him out to Napoli.”

Koulibaly was signed by Napoli for a small fee, and they took a risk on an unknown product thanks to the scouting of Micheli.

Marek Hamsik

It wasn’t just with Napoli that Micheli had a major impact. Marek Hamsik went on to become a huge player for Napoli over the years, but it was Micheli who helped put him on the map before his move to the Italian club.

Micheli first discovered Hamsik when he was involved with another Italian club, Brescia, bringing him to the club from Slovan Bratislava. The Slovakian midfielder had only played a handful of games for Slovan Bratislava before Micheli scouted him for Brescia, and the now-38-year-old went on to play over 400 games for Napoli.

Speaking on Micheli back in 2022, Hamsik suggested that he owed him ‘so much’ for bringing him to Brescia, putting him on the map in Europe.

“I’m in touch with Maurizio Micheli, the head of scouting who brought me to Brescia in Italy and to whom I owe so much.”

Kim Min-jae

Kim Min-Jae

It’s claimed that another player Micheli had a hand in discovering was Kim Min-jae for Napoli. Although now an established defender in Europe, Kim wasn’t as well known before making the move to Italy. The South Korean international had spent just one season at Fenerbahce before Micheli spotted him in Turkey, having plied his trade in his home country before that.

Napoli signed Kim for a fee of just £16m back in 2022, with Micheli playing a role in bringing him to the club, and he was signed by Bayern Munich just a year later, with Napoli more than doubling their money for the centre-back, as the Bundesliga club reportedly paid £43m to activate his release clause.

Micheli’s scouting not only brings the benefits on the pitch, spotting players to help the team, but it can also be crucial from a financial perspective. Scouting talents who are yet to burst onto the scene in Europe allows clubs to secure their signatures for reasonable fees, and their value dramatically increases if they develop as Micheli expects.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia PSG

One player Micheli scouted during his time at Napoli was Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. The tricky winger wasn’t always the superstar he is today, with the Georgian international plying his trade for Dinamo Batumi in his home country.

Micheli has been credited with discovering Kvaratskhelia, and it was an impressive find from the Napoli chief, considering he was playing in a relatively unknown league at the time. The Georgian international has gone on to become one of the best wingers in world football, with Napoli signing him for a bargain price at the time.

Kvaratskhelia is undoubtedly the most impressive piece of scouting Micheli has been credited with, and if he can find an unearthed superstar like that for Arsenal, they will benefit immensely financially and on the pitch.

Arsenal Eyeing Former Leeds Goalkeeper Illan Meslier

Arsenal are showing interest in signing another French star alongside Bradley Barcola of PSG, according to BBC reporter Sami Mokbel.

The Gunners haven’t rushed into any big signings so far in the summer transfer window, which is no surprise after they lifted the Premier League title last season.

The likes of Manchester United, Tottenham and Liverpool are all working on multiple deals at a time, but Arsenal can afford to sit back and wait.

The Gunners won’t want to rest on what they built last year, especially considering they lost in the Champions League final against PSG.

There’s no doubt Mikel Arteta will be looking to improve his squad in the summer transfer window, but there’s no need for them to panic after their 25-26 campaign success.

According to BBC reporter Mokbel, Arsenal have a strong interest in signing goalkeeper Illan Meslier, who has now left Leeds United following the expiration of his contract.

Arsenal are potentially in the market for a second-choice goalkeeper with Kepa Arrizabalaga’s future uncertain.

The former Chelsea goalkeeper might be considering heading through the exit door in the coming months in order to go and play more regular first-team football.

Meslier isn’t the only French player that Arsenal are currently looking at, with reports suggesting that they also want Paris Saint-Germain winger Barcola.

Serena Williams Slammed For Actions After Losing to Maya Joint

Serena Williams made her long-awaited return to the courts of Wimbledon on Tuesday in a losing effort to Australian Maya Joint, but it is what happened afterwards that has seemed to cause some controversy.

Centre Court was at a fever pitch as the legendary Williams walked out in front of the crowd, ready to play in her first competitive singles match since her 2022 retirement. She was up against Maya Joint, a 20-year-old Australian who currently sits 87th in the WTA rankings, which would prove to be a stern test for the American legend.

In the first set, it was Joint who came out on top, winning 6-3. She outpaced the returnee, Williams, and took advantage of the early rustiness on show from the seven-time Wimbledon winner.

In set two, however, Williams rolled back the years, really dialling in her serving prowess to save a match point before sending the second set into a tense tiebreak. She came out on top this time, winning 8-6 to send Centre Court into a frenzy.

The final set started well for Williams as well, who initially went a break up for a 3-1 lead. However, physical fatigue set in for the 44-year-old, and Joint took advantage by winning five consecutive games and, after nearly two-and-a-half hours played, saw out the greatest win of her young career.

It was what happened next which caught the attention of fans online, however, as many feel, Williams’ post-match handshake was tame, to say the least.

Todd Scoullar on X wrote: “…(Serena) gets a wildcard into the biggest tournament on the calendar…gives a rubbish handshake…didn’t need her at Wimbledon.”

Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal both make Nole’s legendary list.

Many fans agreed with this sentiment, with users saying that “She shouldn’t have been there full stop. Just one big ego trip. I’m so pleased to see the back of her,” and “Serena’s oversized ego got the better of her. She thinks she’s still the star. Go home before you embarrass yourself any further.”

Williams also refused the traditional press conference, which brought extra scrutiny towards the 23-time Grand Slam champion, with one user on X saying: “Typical Serena. Thinks she’s bigger than the game…”

She instead released a statement through the tournament organisers and said that it was ‘truly incredible to be back at Wimbledon,’ before praising the ‘incredible’ atmosphere and making it clear that she ‘enjoyed every moment more than anything.’

This isn’t the end for Serena at this year’s event, however, as she will team with her sister Venus in their doubles comeback this week. They will go up against Colombian Camila Osorio and her Argentinian partner Solana Sierra in a match the legendary duo will be hoping to win en route to a potential seventh doubles title.

Lamine Yamal Claims France Aren’t Better Than Spain

Published

Lamine Yamal has caused a huge stir because of comments he made about France ahead of their 3-0 victory over Sweden on Tuesday night. Kylian Mbappe and co. showed why they are among the favourites for glory this summer with yet another barnstorming attacking performance, as the Real Madrid star combined with Ousmane Dembele and Michael Olise to coast to victory.

The result means Les Bleus will take on Paraguay in the World Cup Round of 16. However, with the way this year’s knockout bracket has fallen, it may not be long before they come up against Yamal’s Spain. A mouthwatering semi-final clash could be on the cards if both sides continue their winning form. It would appear the teenage sensation is already eyeing up that potential showdown with a strong sense of confidence.

Yamal, who remains just 18 until July 13, has never been afraid to talk a big game. That was evident when he put Real Madrid on blast for “robbing” ahead of the El Clasico in October. Sometimes his confidence is vindicated, and he performs exactly as he promises; other times, he’s been left to eat his words.

His comments about France have now added extra fuel to the fire ahead of what could be a blockbuster encounter deeper into the tournament.

During a recent interview, Yamal was asked whether France is better than Spain. His answer was short, sweet, and guaranteed to get people talking. He said (watch the full segment in Spanish below):

“No. They haven’t beaten us since the Euros. They can’t be better than us.”

He goes on to explain that “previous matches don’t matter”, and that there are no “clear favourites” at the World Cup because of the nature of knockout football. But Yamal has come under fire for his comments, with one X user remarking: “He’s lost it,” as another added: “He never learns. Always yaps before match and ends up getting spanked every time.”

A third wrote – in part, reference to the fact Yamal snubbed all French players when naming the three players that have impressed him this summer: “If it ends up France vs Spain, Mbappe’s gonna punish ’em.” Meanwhile, a fourth concluded: “Talks too much for someone who hasn’t won anything yet.”

France Look the Real Deal Again Under Didier Deschamps

It’s one thing having squad depth so impressive that it allows you to leave the likes of Desire Doue and Rayan Cherki on the bench, but it’s an entirely different ball game getting the best out of the talent at your disposal. Right now, Didier Deschamps appears to have struck that balance perfectly, with France navigating a 100% start to the 2026 World Cup while firing on all cylinders.

The slick passages of play in the final third have understandably grabbed the headlines, but not enough is being said about how complete this French side looks in every phase of their game. Their counter-attacking displays are a sight to behold, yet it is every player’s willingness to track back and contribute defensively that has laid the foundations for what are arguably the standout performances of the tournament so far. In many ways, they have the look of a team with every box ticked.

Yamal has often shown in the past that he can walk the walk after talking the talk, but France currently look like the team to beat. As things stand, only Argentina appear capable of giving the 2018 winners a run for their money. But of course, football has a habit of making fools of predictions, and only time will tell how it all pans out.
