Myles Lewis-Skelly Must Start for Arsenal vs Tottenham Amid Injury Updates
After both teams endured a difficult last game before the international break, both Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur will be keen to get back to winning ways when they meet on Sunday in the first north London derby of the season.
Mikel Arteta’s side were held to a 2-2 draw by newly-promoted Sunderland at the Stadium of Light as Brian Brobbey scored a 95th minute equaliser, while Thomas Frank’s team were also held to a 2-2 draw but by Manchester United, with Matthijs De Ligt scoring an injury-time equaliser despite Spurs having taken the lead late on.
Both managers have had the entire international break to ponder on those results and look ahead to this next game, but they are also dealing with some major injury issues within their squad in the meantime.
For Arsenal, their defence has been the crown jewel in their Premier League title charge so far in this campaign, conceding just five goals in all competitions so far.
But they were rocked by news that star defender Gabriel Magalhaes suffered a quadriceps injury while on international duty with Brazil, and he could now miss up to two months of action as a result. There has also been some concern over Riccardo Calafiori, after he was sent home from Italy’s training camp due to an injury too.
Arteta will know that he has great depth in his squad to choose replacements from if they aren’t available, but the first man he should be looking to bring in above all else is England international Myles Lewis-Skelly.
Lewis-Skelly Must Start for Arsenal vs Tottenham
Lewis-Skelly emerged as one of the stars of the future last season, breaking into the team at left-back and establishing himself as a regular in the team – shining in the Champions League against the likes of Real Madrid while also making his England debut under Thomas Tuchel.
However, this season the youngster has found regular football hard to come by as a result of the incredible defensive record being put together at the Emirates Stadium, and that has seen him lose his place in the England setup too.
After being left out of the most recent England camp by Tuchel, the manager admitted that Lewis-Skelly needs to be playing more regularly if he is to earn a recall.
“Myles [Lewis-Skelly], Ruben [Loftus-Cheek] and Morgan [Gibbs-White] got outperformed by Nico O’Reilly, Alex Scott, Nick Pope and Jude [Bellingham] in their positions. Myles simply needs more starts, more minutes.
“Myles was a very good team-mate and played for us in the last camp in the World Cup qualifier in Riga, so was Ruben Loftus-Cheek, so was Morgan Gibbs-White, and James Trafford.
“But I said last time, there is a component to it that it’s about competition and performance and the door is always open for guys who perform on a regular and high level.”
His lack of minutes made sense, with Arteta not keen on breaking up a proven unit, but now he has a chance to get back in the team and the manager must not overthink the situation.
Cristhian Mosquera has been a fantastic understudy for William Saliba this season when called upon, but he prefers to play as the right-centre-back, while Piero Hincapie has struggled to make any sort of impact since joining on an initial loan from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer.
Lewis-Skelly, who has been described as ‘elite’, could slot straight into the team in his left-back role, something everyone knows he is more than capable of, while Calafiori could slide across as the left-sided centre-back to maintain the balance of the squad while also playing in his natural position.
Add to that, it should be remembered that Lewis-Skelly is a Hale End academy product and a lifelong Arsenal fan. This game will mean more to him, he will connect with the fans, and he has a point to prove. If he performs well, there’s no reason he should lose his place in the team any time soon.
If Arteta opts not to use him and instead go with a different option, then a January exit is surely something the 19-year-old will be considering ahead of the World Cup, and it could make things tricky for Arteta to manage in the coming weeks and months.

Gary Neville Calls Out FIFA ‘Dictatorship’ After World Cup Incident
Up to this point at the 2026 World Cup, most of the controversies have come off the pitch. Indeed, plenty of headlines have been made about Gianni Infantino and the way he runs FIFA.
Under his watch, the United States have made it extremely difficult for fans, staff members, journalists, officials and even players to come into the co-hosting nation. Most infamously, Somali referee Omar Artan was sent home from Miami, despite having a visa to do his job this summer.
Thankfully, the action in the group stages of the World Cup so far has largely gone smoothly (albeit with some notably empty seats in certain matches, likely due to costly ticket prices). However, there was one controversial incident during the 1-1 draw between Qatar and Switzerland in Group B.
Gary Neville Fumes Over ‘Ridiculous’ FIFA Incident
Switzerland took the lead via a penalty in the 17th minute, converted by Breel Embolo, but could not hang onto the points, with Qatar levelling thanks to an own goal from Miro Muheim in the 94th minute. While the Swiss would have felt robbed to concede so late, having dominated the game, there were plenty of question marks regarding their goal.
The penalty was awarded after Remo Freuler was bundled over by Qatar goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada. The contact was obvious, and the referee quickly pointed ot the spot. However, replays appeared to show the Swiss player standing in an offside position before he pounced onto the ball to win the foul.
Despite this, VAR checked and cleared the penalty, allowing Embolo to put Switzerland in front from 12 yards. The incident sparked a strong reaction, with English pundit Gary Neville leading the dissenting voices.
The Manchester United legend questioned FIFA on ITV as there were also no alternative angles of the incident shown on the live broadcast. As quoted by the Daily Mail, Neville even called the organisation a ‘dictatorship’, saying:
“We all think it here and everybody will think it at home [that it was offside]. FIFA are the host broadcaster. They’ve got the evidence of the automatic decision which they can show us.
“Why are they not showing us? They did this in the last tournament. Fans are already distrusting of FIFA and technology to start with. There is a massive question mark over that because that is offside in my eyes until they prove differently.
“Why aren’t FIFA showing us when there’s already such distrust for them? It’s a dictatorship this: the idea that they hold this data internally and not show fans, it’s absolutely ridiculous.”
Fellow pundits Ian Wright and Duncan Ferguson, who were sat alongside Neville in the ITV studio, also agreed that Freuler looked offside to the naked eye. Adding to that, former England defender Lee Dixon, who was commentating on the game, insisted it would be ruled out:
“There’s no doubt about the penalty but he’s offside. This won’t count.”
Ex-FIFA Referee Claims ‘Technology Failed’ During Controversial World Cup VAR Decision
It didn’t take long for VAR controversy to arrive at the 2026 World Cup.
FIFA Respond To World Cup Offside Controversy
In response to the controversy, FIFA have now shared a statement online, with images, as they defended the offside decision. It’s interesting to note that they claimed the usual supporting animation graphic was not shown due to a ‘technical outage’, although they add that this did not have an impact on the call:
“During the Qatar vs. Switzerland match in the San Francisco Bay Area, a brief technical outage prevented the onside animation graphic from being generated ahead of the penalty awarded to Switzerland in the 14th minute. The issue was quickly resolved.
“The workflow of the VAR was not affected by this issue and followed the normal procedure in checking the on-field decision. The lines used by the VAR to check the position of the relevant players did not show the attacking player to be in an offside position in either of the two situations immediately before the penalty decision.”
Some fans have questioned just how helpful the supporting images actually are, as they feel as if they simply prove that Freuler was offside, despite FIFA’s claims.

Tottenham Ahead of Liverpool in Race to Sign Club Brugge Defender Joel Ordonez
Tottenham have now stormed ahead of Liverpool in the race to sign a South American star during the summer transfer window.
Spurs could be involved in one of their busiest summer transfer windows in recent history, not just in terms of incomings but outgoings too.
A number of players are likely going to want to leave the club after they were once again involved in a relegation battle, while they are without European football heading into the 26/27 season.
Liverpool are also in the market for reinforcements, and despite Spurs’ lack of European football, they could be shopping in similar markets.
The World Cup makes the summer transfer window a little more interesting, with players’ values potentially skyrocketing if they enjoy an impressive tournament.

Tottenham Eyeing Liverpool Target
According to a report from Caught Offside, Tottenham have now moved ahead of Liverpool in the race to sign Club Brugge defender Joel Ordonez in the summer transfer window.
Liverpool’s interest has previously been described as serious, but the report claims that the Reds have now pulled away in the race.
Tottenham are now in pole position to secure his signature, while it’s claimed that Brugge could demand in the region of £39m for the defender.
Ordonez, described as ‘phenomenal’, does have interest from other Premier League clubs as well as sides across Europe.
Brugge would be open to cashing in on the Ecuadorian international as long as they receive a fee in the region of £39m.

Man Utd Hold Talks to Sign Newcastle’s Lewis Hall in Last 2/3 Days
Manchester United have held talks over the last two or three days to secure a new signing, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Signing a new midfielder appears to be Manchester United’s priority, even though they are close to completing a new addition.
Reports have claimed that a deal is done for Atalanta midfielder Ederson to join the club, despite no official confirmation just yet.
Up next for United could be the signature of West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes, with one journalist even claiming that the Portuguese star will end up at United this summer.
After solving the midfield situation, attention will likely turn to other positions, as there’s no doubt the Red Devils need reinforcements all over the pitch.
Man Utd Hold Talks Over Last 2/3 Days
According to Italian journalist Romano, over the last two or three days, Manchester United have kept contacts alive and active with those close to Newcastle defender Lewis Hall.
The Red Devils made contact a few weeks ago, but they’ve kept talks up recently with the England international, someone they ‘really love’.
“I wanted to mention something on Manchester United, because over the last two, three days, Manchester United kept the contacts alive and active with those close to Lewis Hall, the left back from Newcastle. Manchester United already made contact a few weeks ago. Manchester United have genuine interest in the player. They really like Lewis Hall, so he’s one of the targets. Of course, we know Manchester United are going to be busy with midfielders, that area of the pitch for Man United remains a priority, because Ederson is coming, Ederson is done. But then after Ederson, one more midfielder- at least it could be two, we will see- but one more midfielder will join Manchester United. Then left back remains a position they want to cover. Lewis Hall is a player they really, really love at Manchester United.”
Newcastle have already lost Anthony Gordon to Barcelona this summer, while the likes of Sandro Tonali and Hall are being heavily linked with departures.
United are looking to take advantage, and it’s likely a positive for them that Hall isn’t at the World Cup with England.

Hall the Perfect Shaw Replacement
Hall, described as elite, could be the perfect replacement for Luke Shaw in the long term.
United left back Shaw has seemingly got over his injury issues, starting every Premier League game last season, but he has had fitness problems over the last few years.
The English defender isn’t getting any younger, so signing a long-term replacement would be a smart move, and Hall could be that ideal man.
Hall is certainly ready to be a guaranteed starter at United, but learning and competing with Shaw could be beneficial to his development.
The issue United now have is convincing Newcastle to part ways for a reasonable fee.
