Brahim Diaz Shares Statement After Morocco Penalty Miss vs Senegal
After missing his penalty in the AFCON final, Brahim Diaz has now shared an emotional statement. The Morocco star had the chance to win the game with essentially the last kick of the game, but sent his chipped effort right into the hands of Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.
The game went into extra time, and with 94 minutes played, Pape Gueye would blast in the opening goal of the game. This was enough to see Senegal come away with a 1-0 victory.
Understandably, Diaz has faced a great deal of criticism for his failed Panenka, which cost his team their first AFCON in 50 years, and looked distraught after the game as he collected the Golden Boot prize for the tournament’s top scorer. He has now spoken out publicly for the first time since the final.
Diaz Takes ‘Full Responsibility’ For AFCON Penalty Miss
Taking to his official Instagram account, the Real Madrid star made clear just how upset he is, noting that he takes ‘full responsibility’ for the miss. In full, the statement read:
“My soul hurts. I dreamed of this title thanks to all the love you all gave me, every message, every show of support that made me feel I wasn’t alone. I fought with everything I had, with my heart above all else.
“Yesterday I failed and I take full responsibility. I apologise from the bottom of my heart. It will be hard for me to recover, because this wound doesn’t heal easily… but I will try. Not for myself, but for everyone who believed in me and for everyone who suffered with me.
“I will keep going forward until one day I can give you all this love back and become a source of pride for my Moroccan people.”

Gianni Infantino Among Those Unhappy With Senegal Walking Off the Pitch
While Diaz has faced an awful lot of scrutiny for his miss, which was so bad some have even suggested it was deliberate, Senegal have also been crtised for their hevaior in the build-up to the spot-kick. Manager Pape Thiaw ordered his team leave the pitch, causing a lengthy delay before the penalty could be taken.
Morocco head coach Walid Regragui claimed that this ‘must have disturbed’ Diaz, and slammed the oppoisiotn for their ‘rather shameful’ actions. There have also been suggestions that Senegal could now be stipped of their trophy.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino has been among those to call out the behavour of the team, as well as fans in the stadium, saying:
“We also witnessed unacceptable scenes on the field and in the stands – we strongly condemn the behaviour of some ‘supporters’ as well as some Senegalese players and technical staff members.
“It is unacceptable to leave the field of play in this manner, and equally, violence cannot be tolerated in our sport, it is simply not right. We must always respect the decisions taken by the match officials on and off the field of play. Teams must compete on the pitch and within the Laws of the Game, because anything less puts the very essence of football at risk.”
It remains to be seen what the final and full punishment will be for Senegal and their fans, with Confederation of African Football (CAF) revealing that it was ‘reviewing all footage and will refer the matter to competent bodies’.

Man Utd Make Contact to Sign Bargain £22m Midfielder
It is no secret that Manchester United are in the market for midfielders in the summer transfer window.
United have already completed a deal to sign Ederson from Atalanta in a £38million move, with just the official confirmation still to come.
But the Red Devils have always maintained that they want to complete two deals in the middle of the park and that may become three if Manuel Ugarte is sold during the transfer window too.
United have been linked with a host of names already this summer. Elliot Anderson was the number one priority, but United have dropped out of the race to sign the Nottingham Forest midfielder, due to the huge financial package it would take to sign him.
Big names have been linked with Manchester United move
They also did not want to enter into a bidding war with rivals Manchester City, who have already seen two bids of more than £100million knocked back by Evangelos Marinakis.
Aurelien Tchouameni, Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes have all been heavily linked, but all would take a hefty pay packet to get done too.
That may lead to United turning to alternative options and one has emerged in the form of Marc Casado.
The 22-year-old is still trying to find his feet at the Camp Nou, making 34 appearances in all competitions for Barcelona last season, albeit only 15 as a starter in Hansi Flick’s La Liga title-winning side.
Casado had made 29 starts in the previous campaign and was linked with a move away from the Catalan giants then too. Flick said last year: “I spoke with Marc Casado, I don’t see him wanting to leave the team, nor do I think I want that either. The season is long, and we want to achieve everything.”

It remains to be seen whether Flick’s or Casado’s stance has changed in a year, but Mundo Deportivo claims that United have already made contact over a move to sign the defensive midfielder this summer.
United have made enquiries with the player’s agent Jorge Mendes over a move to Old Trafford this summer, and with a £22million price tag on his shoulders, would come considerably cheaper than some of their alternatives.
In an analytical piece on the player back in 2024, Breaking the Lines called him a La Masia gem and said: “With a rare mix of technique and stamina, Casado has the potential to dominate the center of the pitch for Barcelona for years to come. As he keeps growing and improving his skills, there’s no doubt he is destined to become a key midfielder for Barcelona and can be one of the best defensive midfielders in the world.”
High praise indeed and it may be that he has to move to a different club to prove it.

Liverpool Add Brighton Star Yankuba Minteh to Transfer Shortlist
Liverpool have added Brighton and Hove Albion winger Yankuba Minteh to their transfer shortlist as a back-up option if they are unable to agree a deal for top winger target Yan Diomande, according to GIVEMESPORT senior correspondent Ben Jacobs.
After announcing Andoni Iraola as Arne Slot’s replacement at the start of the month, Liverpool have sprung into action in the transfer market and agreed a deal to sign Osasuna winger Victor Munoz out of nowhere on Wednesday night.
The Reds have beaten Premier League rivals Newcastle United to the signature of the Spain international, who is currently representing his country at the 2026 World Cup and has already completed a medical in America.
The Merseyside outfit have identified the wide positions as a key area they need to strengthen in this summer transfer window, with two new players expected to arrive.
The transfer plan is of little surprise given the Reds are losing Mohamed Salah, while Hugo Ekitike remains sidelined with a serious long-term injury.
The left-sided Munoz is set to be the first through the door at Anfield, but now club chiefs want to sign Salah’s long-term successor too.
Jacobs: Liverpool Add Minteh to Transfer Shortlist
Liverpool are working hard on a deal to sign RB Leipzig sensation Yan Diomande, who they have identified as the top target to replace Salah.
The 19-year-old enjoyed a stunning breakthrough campaign for the Bundesliga club, and he has carried his club form into the World Cup by winning the man of the match award in his first-ever appearance at the tournament as the Ivory Coast beat Ecuador.
While Diomande and Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola are near the top of the club’s wishlist, there are other names on there too, as revealed by Jacobs on the latest episode of GIVEMESPORT’s Market Madness podcast.
He said: “Diomande is the preference. Diomande is the one that Liverpool are working on, and it could develop as a consequence, but if it isn’t to be Diomande, I can give you some other targets.
“One, as we’ve known for quite some time, is Bradley Barcola and PSG, if they win the race for Yan Diomande, may suddenly become open to selling Barcola, even though, as of now, their stance is basically not for sale. But it’s not impossible if another player comes in that PSG’s perspective changes.
“Then there are some new names I can give you on the Liverpool shortlist as well. Said El Mala is one at Koln, Brighton’s Yankuba Minteh is another, and Lillle’s Matias Fernandez-Pardo is a third name. All three of those players are also on Liverpool’s radar and have been discussed and presented to new manager Andoni Iraola.”

Pace is Key for Liverpool and Iraola
There is one thing that all of these key targets have in common, and it is their explosive pace.
Minteh has been recorded as one of the top 10 fastest players in the Premier League previously, and Dutch football writer Lentin Goodijk has described him as being ‘lightning quick’.
While Liverpool and Iraola have some good technical forwards to pick from right now, the Spaniard obviously feels that he wants to add some real speed to his attacking options as they look to significantly improve on their performances this season.
Whether it be Diomande, Minteh or any of the other names on the shortlist, Liverpool’s plan is clear.

Tottenham Braced For £100m Transfer Hijack
Tottenham are bracing themselves for their transfer move to sign Sandro Tonali this summer to be hijacked by Manchester City.
Spurs have been one of the busier clubs already this summer, bringing in two new players on free transfers, as well as agreeing a deal for another.
Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson will link up with the Lilywhites from Bournemouth and Liverpool respectively after their World Cup adventures with Argentina and Scotland are over, while Jan Paul van Hecke looks set to arrive in a £52million deal from Brighton & Hove Albion.
Lewis Family vowed to invest in the Tottenham squad
Roberto De Zerbi and Spurs already mean business in the summer transfer window, with the Lewis Family vowing to back the Italian with investment into the squad.
GIVEMESPORT understands that the Spurs owners want to make a statement signing this summer and there are talks ongoing over a deal to bring Savinho to the club from Manchester City.
But any move for the forward would be surpassed by a transfer for Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali. Spurs burst to the front of the queue to sign the 26-year-old earlier this week when news emerged of a planned £80million to £85million move for the Italian.
Newcastle want in the region of £100million to sell the midfielder and there is a feeling around St James’ Park that he will depart the club this summer.
Tottenham are keen to get a deal over the line for Tonali to strengthen the middle of the park, with reports surfacing that the player is keen on the move to north London too.

But Spurs are not the only club interested in signing him this summer. Manchester United have been linked with a move, given their plan to sign two central midfielders this summer. Arsenal were linked in January, although a move never came to fruition and the Gunners could make another move this time around.
And then there’s Manchester City, who lost Bernardo Silva this week and could well say goodbye to Rodri too, with question marks over his future at the Etihad Stadium.
Man City aiming to bring in two midfielders this summer
City’s attention for now, is on signing Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest, with two bids of more than £100million already rejected by owner Evangelos Marinakis.
Any suggestion that City are only planning for one midfield arrival appear to be wide of the mark, however. GMS understands that City, like Spurs, are in talks to sign Tonali and Teamtalk reporter Graeme Bailey has gone even further in saying: “I am told City made it clear during the process that they don’t see Tonali as some sort of alternative to Elliot Anderson – ideally they want both.”
Teamtalk also state that the Etihad Stadium would be his preference upon leaving St James’ Park this summer, if he cannot make the move to Serie A – an opportunity that has been removed because of the finances.
Tottenham may have thought they would have it all their own way in the race to sign Tonali with United put off by the price, City going all out for Anderson and Arsenal appearing to move for Manu Kone, but they may face a battle to complete the £100million deal after all.
