Jamie Carragher Names the 4 Managers Man Utd Should Target
Jamie Carragher has named England manager Thomas Tuchel on a four-man managerial shortlist that Manchester United must choose from to replace Ruben Amorim. The Red Devils are on the lookout for a permanent replacement but have placed Michael Carrick in charge until the end of the season.
Carrick enjoyed a remarkable start to his return to Old Trafford as caretaker manager, overseeing an impressive 2-0 win over Manchester City in the Manchester Derby last Saturday. There is already talk about the former Middlesbrough boss being offered the job permanently.
Carragher doesn’t think Carrick should be in the running to take over the club long-term despite his win over City. He believes there are four experienced coaches whom Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS should consider this summer.
Jamie Carragher’s Top Four Man Utd Candidates
Amorim’s reign ended in early January, after a tumultuous 14 months in which United finished 15th in the Premier League table. The Portuguese’s sacking came after he indirectly put the board on blast, feeling as though they were interfering too much.
Whomever the club decides is the man for the job must be a “special” leader with the right “energy” and “drive”, according to Carragher. Sky Sports handed him a pool of 18 options to choose from, including caretaker boss Carrick, and he narrowed this down to four.
Thomas Tuchel
The first name on Carragher’s list was Tuchel, who takes England to the FIFA World Cup this summer after an unbeaten qualifying campaign. The Three Lions are one of the favourites to win the tournament, and this was his only task when appointed.
Carragher explained why Tuchel was an ideal choice because of his experience managing in the Premier League with Chelsea:
“He’s been in the Premier League before. He’s obviously a top manager. The thing I like about him is I still think he’s got that energy and drive and spikiness about him. He’s gone into the England squad, and he’s ruffled feathers with some of the biggest players there. Now I’m not saying that has to happen in every job he’s in, but there’s something about him.”
Tuchel’s contract expires after the World Cup, which means United could have a golden opportunity to move for the Champions League-winning coach. He spoke to INEOS previously and Carragher feels he has the fight that United managers need:
“He just feels like he would go to war for your club, and he’d be fighting against the other clubs, and he’d have something about him.”
One issue United might face when appointing Tuchel is how much control he is given. This was thought to be an issue that led to his Chelsea exit under Todd Boehly’s ownership and there are similarities between the two clubs’ structures.
Luis Enrique
Another European Champion whom Carragher reckons could be a hit at Old Trafford is Luis Enrique, who led Paris Saint-Germain to long-awaited Champions League glory last season. The Spaniard has been a huge success at every club he’s managed, including Barcelona, where he took Lionel Messi and the Catalans to a treble in his debut campaign at Camp Nou.
Carragher gave a glowing endorsement: “You would absolutely have him all day. Now we see him as the best manager in Europe. He didn’t have a good time at Celta Vigo, he didn’t have a good time at Roma, but Barcelona still appointed him.”
Enrique is under contract with PSG until the summer of 2027 and recently refuted claims that he is looking to leave the Parc des Princes this summer. But he has yet to test himself in the Premier League, and battling it out with the likes of Mikel Arteta could be persuasive.
Eddie Howe
The way in which Eddie Howe has transformed Newcastle United since arriving at St James’ Park over four years ago makes him a contender. He took a struggling Magpies side out of a relegation scrap and eventually led them to Champions League football.
Carragher championed Howe and suggested he can deal with the spotlight of the Old Trafford hotseat:
“I’m a huge fan of Eddie Howe. The type of football when Newcastle are at their best is high energy going forward, but the real thing I like is that you have to be able to handle the pressures of Manchester United.”
Howe has put his faith in Newcastle’s youth during his reign on Tyneside, and last season won the club its first League Cup in 70 years. Carragher thinks his trust in the academy could be beneficial:
“When you’re in Newcastle and you live in that city, it’s constant and he handles it brilliantly. Where I think he could also help is that Manchester United have a problem with young players – a lot of them don’t go on to fulfil their potential – but I think Eddie Howe is a great coach.”
Carragher isn’t the only Premier League legend who has tipped Howe as a possible solution for United. The club’s former captain, Roy Keane, reckons the English tactician’s ‘calm’ demeanour would be ideal for the Red Devils.
Julian Nagelsmann
One of the most intriguing names to potentially become United’s next permanent manager is Julian Nagelsmann, who is currently in charge of the Germany national team. He was controversially sacked by top-of-the-league Bayern Munich in early 2023, despite having won the Bundesliga title the previous season.
Nagelsmann is often listed among candidates for top jobs in England but has yet to be handed an opportunity in the Premier League. Carragher feels the young German coach’s resume makes him a credible option:
“I don’t know everything about him but I do look at a coach with a big reputation, with a lot to prove in some ways.”
If United were to move for Nagelsmann, it would be a decision likely backed by their director of recruitment, Christopher Vivell. The pair worked together during his reign at RB Leipzig, establishing the German side as one of the Bundesliga’s major players.

Jamie Carragher’s Chop List
Carrick’s stunning start to his second interim spell at Old Trafford has excited fans following the Manchester Derby win. But Carragher has doubts about his experience, having only held one permanent managerial job during his short coaching career:
“I’m crossing out Michael Carrick. I go back to this question – do I believe this guy can win the league? I have to believe he can. I don’t believe Man Utd will win the league with Carrick, or Chelsea will with Liam Rosenior. I’m not trying to be disrespectful, but you have to be special. I might be proven wrong.”
Carragher also ruled out former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp and their legendary former midfielder Xabi Alonso who was recently sacked by Real Madrid:
“Jurgen Klopp will not be managing Manchester United. That is out. Xabi Alonso – he cannot do that. He can’t, his affiliation with Liverpool. That can’t happen.”
A Carlo Ancelotti Premier League return has been speculated as has a possible France-linked Zinedine Zidane appointment. But Carragher downplayed both as well as former Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca:
“Carlo Ancelotti, for me, wouldn’t have the energy or drive to get Man Utd back. Zinedine Zidane is a younger version of [Carlo] Ancelotti, but maybe I am wrong. Enzo Maresca is a no, but he is a really good coach.”
Xavi has gone on record to say how he’d love to manage in England and that United was his favourite English club. He has a La Liga title to his name from his Barcelona tenure but that isn’t enough for Carragher:
“Xavi is one, at Barcelona, he won the league but enough experience for Manchester United? He only has a couple of years of experience as a manager.”
Two candidates who will be managing at this year’s World Cup, Roberto Martinez and Mauricio Pochettino, have Premier League experience. They don’t convince Carragher:
“Roberto Martinez, if he does a brilliant job at Portugal, there is no doubt that Roberto is ready. The one thing he has not done in his career is manage an elite football club. He’d have to do something really special. Mauricio Pochettino is the same as Ancelotti. Chelsea went with Enzo Maresca as they wanted a young and energetic coach.”
United wouldn’t have to pay compensation for Oliver Glasner who has confirmed he is leaving Crystal Palace at the end of the season. The FA Cup-winning coach’s back-three system puts Carragher off as does Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola’s lack of a big club on his CV:
“Oliver Glasner, straight away, I’d say no because of the system. Andoni Iraola has done a brilliant job and is linked with top jobs but Bournemouth to Man Utd is a big jump.”
Carragher also ruled out Fulham’s Marco Silva while suggesting Marseille’s Roberto De Zerbi would, much like Amorim, be at odds with the higher-ups at Old Trafford:
“This is the same for Marco Silva. I think the next step for them would be Tottenham. It feels more Tottenham-like for them. Roberto De Zerbi is a brilliant coach but he is liable to go to war with the owners within six weeks.
If it’s longevity that United are after then Diego Simeone would be a top choice but Carragher has concerns that he doesn’t fit ‘the United DNA’ due to his playing philosophy:
“Diego Simeone is an interesting one. I was speaking to Gary Neville about United’s DNA. It is interesting that Roy [Keane] and Gary have both mentioned Simeone at different points. That goes away from what a club’s DNA is because he is a defensive coach. You can’t ask a manager to change.”

Ilia Topuria Said Just 9 Words to His Agent After Justin Gaethje Defeat
Ilia Topuria’s agent has revealed exactly what ‘El Matador’ told him in the immediate aftermath of his brutal defeat to Justin Gaethje at UFC Freedom 250.
Topuria entered his undisputed UFC Lightweight Championship clash with Gaethje at the White House as a heavy favourite. The 29-year-old, who has held UFC gold in two divisions, was undefeated in all 17 of his previous MMA outings.
However, the adopted Spaniard was battered by Gaethje in the main event of the card at the White House, as ‘The Highlight’ entered a career-best performance to win a full UFC title for the first time in his career.
Ilia Topuria’s Loss to Justin Gaethje at UFC Freedom 250
The American enjoyed significant success early in the fight as he bloodied Topuria during the opening round. Ilia would later admit that he had lost all vision in his right eye by the end of the first session.
Despite enduring a nightmare beginning to the contest, Topuria battled back well in the second. He even looked to be on the verge of winning the fight when he dropped Gaethje with a perfectly-timed shot to the liver.
As Gaethje fell, Topuria followed his opponent to the ground, something he would later be told was a “big mistake” by Justin’s coach, Trevor Wittman.
Justin Gaethje’s Coach Reveals ‘Big Mistake’ Ilia Topuria Made in UFC Freedom 250 Fight
The fight could have ended VERY differently…
Gaethje managed to avoid various submission attempts from Topuria and survive until the end of the round. Having made it to the third round, Justin began to turn the screw on a struggling Ilia.
The 37-year-old underdog sent Topuria sprawling to the canvas with a vicious knee to the midsection. It was a blow from which Ilia never truly recovered. With his opponent in a compromised state, Gaethje was able to hand a variety of hard strikes to Topuria’s face.
These led to his eyes swelling up considerably, with the ringside doctor advising the referee that the fight should have been called off at the end of the third. Wanting to give Topuria every chance to succeed, official Marc Goddard allowed the previously undefeated competitor to go out for the fourth round.
As hard as he tried, Topuria wasn’t able to turn the tide and returned to his corner at the end of the round as a beaten man. Unable to see out of either eye, Ilia told his corner to end the contest as he uttered two words while sitting slumped on his stool telling his team to end the fight.
What Ilia Topuria Said to His Agent After Devastating UFC White House Setback
In the aftermath of his defeat, there has been much speculation about Topuria’s future, especially in view of the damage he took during the fight.
Among those to have their say was Ilia’s agent, Jose Maria Diaz, who released a statement following the bout in which he admitted he was “heartbroken”:
“I’ve been processing everything that happened and I really still don’t understand. I’m not going to lie, I am heartbroken.”
Diaz went on to reveal exactly what Topuria said to him straight after the fight. While most beaten fighters would have been complaining about bad luck during the bout or demanding a rematch, Ilia had a different concern as he shared just nine words with his representative, asking:
“Did the fans enjoy the fight? Great fight, right?”
The dramatic scrap received glowing reviews from all who watched it. UFC CEO Dana White was also hugely impressed, awarding Topuria $425,000 for his part in the Fight of the Night, in addition to his contractual pay.
Ilia will need time to heal from his injuries before deciding on his next move, although Gaethje has already seemingly ruled out a rematch between the pair.

Ivory Coast Star’s Tactical Profile
Yan Diomande has made waves this season after a stellar campaign for Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig.
After netting three goals in 18 minutes against Eintracht Frankfurt in December, Diomande became the second-youngest player to score a hat-trick in the Bundesliga.
With 22 goal contributions across 36 appearances in all competitions, Leipzig will face a stern challenge if they are to keep their star youngster away from the clutches of Europe’s elite.
Liverpool have been strongly linked with a summer swoop, while other top European clubs, including Arsenal, are also believed to be keen on recruiting the highly regarded youngster.

A right-footed winger, comfortable playing off of either flank, Diomande was a thorn in the side of almost every Bundesliga fullback during the 2025/26 season. Explosive, strong and agile, the Ivory Coast international, who has already become a key figure for his nation, does not rely on flashy skills or unnecessary flair, but instead uses his strengths to his advantage.
Whilst his right foot may be his ‘stronger foot’, the fact that seven of his 12 Bundesliga goals have come from his left would suggest that both feet are equally effective at finding the back of the net. Given that he is able to play with both feet, the classic defensive advice of “show him down the line” is not necessarily efficacious, with his deliveries into the box just as terrifying as the prospect of him shaping up for a shot on goal.
And whilst his finishing may not be at the level of some of the game’s most elite forwards, the natural quality and instinct that Diomande has demonstrated in the 2025/26 season, along with the variety of his finishes, offers a solid platform from which he can build on.
Take his hat-trick against Frankfurt, for example. His first was an instinctive, right-footed finish, high into the roof of the net. His second came as a delicate, left-footed shot from the edge of the box found the bottom corner. A perfect through-ball from Nicolas Seiwald set up Diomande’s hat-trick, as the winger rounded the keeper and slotted home his third goal in 18 minutes. With such a varied range of finishes, his unpredictability makes defending against him a real challenge.

Just a quick glance at the stats is enough for anyone to tell that Diomande has the potential to be a superstar. In 2025/26, he won more duels and completed more successful dribbles than any other winger in the Bundesliga, whilst also making a high number of ball recoveries, particularly in the final third, forcing high turnovers in much more advanced areas of the pitch.
In terms of goal-scoring wingers, only Bayern Munich’s Luis Diaz and Michael Olise netted more than Diomande in the German top division this season, which is not at all surprising given that the 34-time league winners netted 122 goals in the campaign.
But it’s not just Diomande’s eye for goal that sets him apart from other players in his position, his 10.12 expected assists this season places him in the 97th percentile, whilst only five per cent of Bundesliga wingers have recorded more than the Ivorian’s 896 successful passes this season.

Yan Diomande Dribbling Skills in Focus
Yan Diomande’s biggest asset is his creative dribbling ability. His effectiveness with both feet allows him to manipulate his way around defenders with ease, and his close-control ensures he escapes with the ball, even in the tightest of areas.
Speaking on his tricky winger, Leipzig head coach Ole Werner said:
He often gets past his opponents without any tricks, simply because he’s so dynamic.
His most common and most effective maneuver is his half-turn. Oftentimes, in matches, Diomande will look to receive the ball facing sideways, or even with his back to goal, and will use his strength the muscle defenders away, allowing the ball to roll past his body, before using his lightning-fast acceleration to drive into the space vacated by the defender. Other times, he will gently knock the ball around the onrushing fullback, creating a yard of space from which he can attack the box.
His six-foot frame also makes him a nightmare to compete against. His centre of gravity makes him difficult to knock off balance whilst still being big enough to compete physically with stronger defenders.
Who is Yan Diomande similar to?
As an explosive winger with impressive dribbling skills, Diomande has drawn comparisons to Sadio Mane, who has exhibited similar attributes throughout his career. He is quite like his RB Leipzig team-mate Antonio Nusa in terms of directness, while others he has been compared with include James Maddison, Pedro and Inaki Williams.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic Puts Alexi Lalas in His Place During World Cup
Thierry Henry produced a priceless reaction live on FOX Sports after Zlatan Ibrahimovic put Alexi Lalas in his place on live TV following France’s 3-1 win over Senegal at the 2026 World Cup.
The trio have only been working together since the tournament began last week but there have already been moments of tension between Lalas, the former United States international, and his fellow pundits.
Lalas made headlines last week after describing British presenter James Corden as a “full kit w***er” live on TV on day two of the tournament, prompting a shocked reaction from his fellow panellists.
Since then, viewers on social media have been speculating that Zlatan and Henry have little time for the outspoken Lalas.
Zlatan Shuts Down ‘Arrogant’ France Accusations
There was another tense moment between Ibrahimovic and Lalas on Tuesday, following France’s victory over Senegal.
Lalas attempted to spark a discussion over whether the French team were guilty of being arrogant during the goalless first half. The 56-year-old made the comment after former USA star Landon Donovan called Les Bleus “arrogant” and “casual” in their approach during the opening 45 minutes.
“The reality is, if they are arrogant, it’s because they can do things like that,” Lalas said, highlighting France’s second-half performance in which Kylian Mbappe scored twice. However, Zlatan shut down any suggestions of France being arrogant, responding:
“It’s not arrogance, it’s confidence. Ignorant people will say it’s arrogance, intelligent people will say it’s confidence.”
Henry’s eyes widened and stayed that way for several seconds as the dust settled on Zlatan’s cutting response. Watch the clip below:

France, one of the pre-tournament favourites, struggled during the first half against Senegal in hot conditions at the New York New Jersey Stadium. But Didier Deschamps’ side found their rhythm after the break and secured all three points thanks to Mbappe’s brace and another goal from substitute Bradley Barcola.
However, France only find themselves second in Group I after the first round of matches due to Norway securing a 4-1 win over Iraq. Manchester City’s Erling Haaland, making his maiden appearance at a World Cup finals, scored twice at the Boston Stadium.
