When Every Premier League Club Last Won a Major Trophy (Ranked)

Published

on

Summary

  • West Ham United ended their 43-year wait for silverware by winning the Europa Conference League in June 2023.
  • Newcastle United’s last major trophy before winning the 2025 League Cup was the FA Cup in 1955.
  • Four Premier League teams are yet to win a major piece of silverware in their history: Brentford, Brighton, Fulham and Bournemouth.

Some teams in England’s top flight have been accustomed to racking up trophies year in year out, while some enjoy mild success, but ultimately it comes few and far between. And then there’s the rest: those that long for another cup final day out with friends and family to see their beloved side battle it out for what’s most important in the football echo chamber. Trophies.

West Ham United defied the norm and ended their extensive wait for silverware in 2023 by picking up the Europa Conference League, while Newcastle did the same when they lifted the Carabao Cup in 2025. Winning trophies is the simplest measure of success for any football team. It’s a date that will remain part of a club’s history for as long as they live. But when was the last time each Premier League club won a major honour?

Please note that Brentford, Bournemouth, Brighton and Fulham are omitted, seeing as they have not been fortunate enough to get their hands on a major honour, while the Super Cup, Club World Cup and Community Shield are not considered to be major trophies.

Burnley – 2 May 1960

Burnley have a rich history. Founded in 1882, they were one of the first to become professional and were one of the 12 founder members of the Football League in 1888–89. But, despite their rich history, their last major trophy came nearly 70 years ago.

The Clarets have been crowned champions of England on two occasions, with their most recent triumph coming in 1960. They finished the season with 55 points, one point clear of Wolverhampton Wanderers in second and two points clear of Tottenham Hotspur in third.

Sunderland – 5 May 1973

Trophy: FA Cup

Sunderland are one of the biggest clubs in England and have one of the country’s most passionate and loyal fanbases. So it’s a huge surprise that their last trophy came all the way back in 1973, when they lifted the FA Cup.

The Black Cats went into the match at Wembley Stadium as huge underdogs. After all, Leeds United finished 3rd in the first division that season, while Sunderland finished sixth in the second tier. But it was the underdogs who prevailed thanks to Ian Porterfield’s 33rd minute goal, etching his name in club history.

14

Wolverhampton Wanderers – 15 March 1980

Trophy: League Cup

Molineux

Wolves entered the affair as the underdogs, considering they were facing the reigning League Cup winners and European champions, Nottingham Forest. Level on points in the league, however, the Old Gold knew the win was there for the taking and so, courtesy of a 67th-minute Andy Gray finish past the legendary Peter Shilton, they ran out 1–0 victors.

Their most recent win before 1980 came six years earlier in the same competition, but they have had little to no luck emulating the success since. It’s been a long wait for Wolves fans, and they haven’t been in a final for quite some time despite having made themselves Premier League regulars over the past decade since promotion from the Championship in 2018.

Nottingham Forest – 29 April 1990

Trophy: League Cup

On the 30th anniversary of the League Cup, Nottingham Forest and Oldham went toe-to-toe in what would be the former’s most recent major trophy win. Forest’s Des Walker was awarded the Man of the Match gong but had Nigel Jemson to thank for scoring the only goal of the game.

Let’s not forget that just a decade prior, Forest were crowned European champions two times on the bounce and became a dominant force in doing so. Since then, that has not been the case. Long gone are the days of Brian Clough’s European heroes of the late 1970s and early 1980s. The historic club are doing everything they can to rise to prominence in the game once more.

12

Leeds United – 3 May 1992

Trophy: First Division

Leeds United

Leeds United were crowned champions of England in 1992, the final season before the First Division became the Premier League. Howard Wilkinson’s side lost just four times from their 42 matches as they amassed 82 points, four points clear of runners-up Manchester United.

The Whites haven’t come especially close to ending their drought in recent years, having spent the majority of their time in England’s second tier. Now back in the Premier League, they’ll be hoping that their owners, 49ers Enterprises, can bankroll them to success.

11

Everton – 20 May 1995

Trophy: FA Cup

Everton 1995 FA Cup

The Merseyside outfit have been a staple part of the Premier League since its inception in 1992, having not been relegated in that period. That being said, their last major triumph came over 30 years ago, as Everton lifted the FA Cup in 1995.

It was none other than Manchester United that fell at the feet of the Toffees on that day as Paul Rideout’s headed goal secured the win. As expected, their opponents dominated the rest of the final, though not to avail. Chelsea defeated Everton in the final of the same competition in 2009, and this is the closest the club have come to getting their hands on a trophy during their three-decade-long drought.

10

Aston Villa – 24 March 1996

Trophy: League Cup

General view of Villa Park, Birmingham.

Having won the trophy just two years prior, Leeds United were no match for the high-flying Aston Villa side, who won 3-0. A dominant first-half display saw Villa enter the break 1-0 to the good, but goals from Ian Taylor and Dwight Yorke in the second stage of the game tied up a sweet victory. Equalling Liverpool’s record set in the competition, this occasion marked Villa’s fifth success in the League Cup.

Now employing a serial winner in European competition in Unai Emery, there is a chance Villa Park could welcome a trophy sooner rather than later. There is a real feel-good factor back at the club, and the Villans now aim to earn regular Champions League football and juggle their domestic contributions.

Arsenal – 1 August 2020

Trophy: FA Cup

Arsenal FA Cup 2020

Officially known as the Heads-Up FA Cup final, capital club foes Arsenal and Chelsea played behind closed doors (due to COVID-19) to figure out who would be taking the fabled trophy home with them. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was at the double as Christian Pulisic’s early goal was cancelled out in a 2-1 Arsenal success.

Growing frustrated as the game ran away from them, Chelsea’s Mateo Kovacic picked up his second yellow card of the day to receive his marching orders from Anthony Taylor. Until very recently, Arsenal were the most decorated club in the long history of the FA Cup, having lifted the iconic trophy 14 times.

West Ham United – 7 June 2023

Trophy: Europa Conference League

Declan Rice -1

That famous night in Prague. The east Londoners ended their 43-year major trophy drought as Jarrod Bowen etched himself in their rich history by coming up with the goods at the death. Said Benrahma bagged West Ham’s first of the night via a penalty, just for the scoring to be levelled a mere five minutes later by Giacomo Bonaventura.

The travelling support were in fine voice throughout – and for good reason, too. This was the first time many of the Irons’ fan base would have seen their side lift a trophy as the club’s last major honour was back in 1980 when they won the FA Cup.

Manchester City – 19 May 2024

Trophy: Premier League

No surprise that perennial winners – particularly under Pep Guardiola’s stewardship – are close to top spot with their fourth consecutive Premier League title in the 2023/24 season. In fine fashion, the Spaniard’s imperious roster of players showed they were, at the time, capable of continued success after plenty of other triumphs over the last few years.

Such has been the dominance of this Manchester City juggernaut over the years, it comes as a bit of a surprise that the Citizens have endured a bit of a slump since their last title. They have a great chance of ending the campaign with silverware, though, as they compete in the latter stages of the Carabao Cup.

Man Utd Want Aurelien Tchouameni Amid Mateus Fernandes Hijack

Published

on

Manchester United’s efforts to improve their midfield ranks may have hit a stumbling block, as Mundo Deportivo reports that a transfer hijack from Real Madrid and former boss Jose Mourinho could force the team to change course.

It comes as talks have ramped up over new potential midfield additions, with the Red Devils keen on adding some quality in possession heading into next season.

Several targets have been on the cards, with a deal already agreed to sign Ederson from Atalanta as just the first addition of a few expected in the middle of the park.

The next arrival is unclear as things stand, but Man United have been locked in talks to sign Mateus Fernandes, a target who is now the subject of interest from Real Madrid.

Man United Transfer Domino Effect

According to the report from Mundo Deportivo, Real Madrid are set to push for a deal to sign Fernandes from West Ham this summer, with Mourinho keen to land the Portuguese international.

It comes as a potential hijacking of a deal that Man United have been attempting to complete for the past few weeks, with talks held in an attempt to secure the midfielder.

Real Madrid’s inclusion could make for a tough negotiating period ahead, especially when it comes to convincing the player in the coming weeks.

However, there is a knock-on effect, as the report adds that Aurelien Tchouameni is likely to leave if Fernandes is signed by Los Blancos this summer.

That could open a pathway where Man United miss out on one target, but land another as a result, with the Red Devils poised and ready to strike into action.

The Red Devils have been heavily linked with a move for Tchouameni, and a deal could now become available for the star, but at a considerable price.

The report claims that a “substantial offer” will be needed for Man United to land the Frenchman, with those funds likely to help the side pursue other moves in the transfer market.

Fernandes is clearly a player with plenty of potential, but with two Premier League relegations in consecutive seasons, it’s understandable why teams may be reluctant to pay such a big price tag for him.

With Real Madrid making a move, it could prevent Man United from making a mistake in landing him, and offers a chance to land an upgrade in Tchouameni.

Fans have given an instant reaction to Ronaldo’s performance.

The midfielder has been described as “the best DM in the world”, and for good reason too. The 26-year-old has nearly 200 appearances for Real Madrid, which is no small feat, while he is a regular for France on the international stage.

Adding someone approaching the peak of their career who has been at the highest level with even more to come sounds like an ideal move for Man United.

Thomas Tuchel ‘Begs’ FIFA to Make Change After England 4-2 Croatia

Published

on

By

Thomas Tuchel has called on FIFA to implement an immediate change following England’s 4-2 win over Croatia on Wednesday night.

The Three Lions began their 2026 World Cup campaign in impressive fashion at the Dallas Stadium in Texas.

Harry Kane gave England the lead in the 12th minute from the penalty spot. Martin Baturina equalised with a stunning strike 10 minutes before half-time before Kane netted his second of the match.

Tuchel’s men were dealt a blow moments before the interval when Petar Musa made it 2-2, much to the frustration of England’s coaching staff.

“A complicated and confusing first half from us, really,” England assistant coach Anthony Barry said during a frank half-time interview with ITV. “I think a lot of nervous energy early on. Maybe that should be accepted, and maybe expected in the opening game of a World Cup.

“From there, then we made some decisions where the energy was not free in our mind, playing long when we should play short, playing short when we should play long, really not playing through the gaps so not allowing us to accelerate our game the way we wanted to.

“Then you think the penalty would free us up, allow us to play more like us, look more like ourselves, but again we fall back into some fearful patterns, and yeah… we’ve always been able to rely on set pieces.

“We get the second goal again. We’re hoping that’s the moment that would allow us to move forward in the game, but okay, we concede the second goal later on, and now we have to speak about that at half-time.”

England Produce Excellent Second-Half Display

Whatever Tuchel and his coaching staff said during the break clearly had the desired effect. England were the superior side in the second half and won the game thanks to excellent goals from Jude Bellingham and substitute Marcus Rashford.

“I thought it was a game of two halves. In the first half, we were OK,” Harry Kane told ITV after the match. “[We were] really disappointed to concede in the way we did. I thought we dropped off.

“Credit to the manager, he gave us a speech at half-time and said if we lose, we lose in our way, and I think we saw that in the way we came out in the second half.

“We went full gas and they couldn’t live with it. Credit to everyone for the first game of the tournament.”

Tuchel Calls on FIFA to Implement Change

While Tuchel was pleased with his side’s second-half display, he was far less happy with a pre-match incident involving the photographers.

The German tactician said his experience was “ruined a little bit” by a wall of photographers who obstructed his view of the national anthems and has called on world football’s governing body to sort the situation out for next time.

“I have to tell you something. I’m begging FIFA to change the position of the photographers in the national anthem, because I could not see my team,” Tuchel was quoted as saying by BBC Sport.

“It was a very special moment today, and I was standing in front of a wall of 50 photographers and I could not see one single player. It ruined a little bit my experience today.”

The England boss added: “It is very emotional. Listen, when I was young, and even when I started coaching, this was too big to dream of, to have this kind of a career.

“I felt the spirit, and what it means to be part of a World Cup. It’s just amazing, and I felt very, very alive the last two days. I didn’t want to be anywhere else in the world than here.”

Tuchel has not sung God Save The King – England’s national anthem – since he was appointed England manager in January 2025.

He initially said that he must “earn the right” to sing it, but has hinted that he will do so if England reach the 2026 World Cup final on July 19.

Luka Vuskovic Pushing To Leave Tottenham

Published

Tottenham face the prospect of losing a promising player this summer, as reports claim that he is now pushing to leave the club in the transfer window.

It comes as the hierarchy at Spurs are overseeing an important transfer window for the club, as they look to get the club back where they belong at the very top of the Premier League once more.

Incomings have been on the agenda so far, with two signings already completed, while a fee has been agreed with Brighton for Jan Paul van Hecke to make him the third arrival.

Talks are ongoing to sign Savinho for the forward ranks, while there is interest in Sandro Tonali to help improve the midfield area.

While Tottenham are keen to improve the squad, there are concerns that some important players could leave this summer, with uncertainty now surrounding the future of Luka Vuskovic.

Luka Vuskovic Pushing For Tottenham Exit

Luka Vuskovic

Tottenham have strengthened their defensive options this summer, but those signings could now force an exit for Vuskovic over the next few weeks.

According to journalist Alex Crook, the 19-year-old is now pushing to leave Spurs, as he searches for more guaranteed game time without being sent on loan again.

Vuskovic has been the subject of transfer interest from Brighton, who have had an offer in the region of £35 million rejected in discussions separate from the North London club’s talks to sign Van Hecke.

It’s unclear whether the Seagulls will return with an offer for the Croatian international, while he remains unhappy at the prospect of staying at Tottenham.

It comes as a potential blow for the club, who have been keen to maximise the potential of Vuskovic as one of the most promising defenders for the future.

His return from Hamburg brings plenty of questions over his future, which will need to be answered in the next few weeks.

Tottenham Advantage In Vuskovic Future

Luka Vuskovic

As Vuskovic faces doubts over his future, Tottenham appear to hold almost all of the cards to decide on what his next steps will be.

Spurs have a deal until 2030 for the defender, meaning they have plenty of time on their side and there is no need to force a deal this summer.

Tottenham are pushing to sign a new midfielder this summer, with a big-money deal potentially on the cards.

Add to that his need to develop, and Tottenham have a clear advantage in deciding the future of Vuskovic, whether that is on loan or with the club.

An exit could raise some valuable transfer funds, especially for a player who is not currently proven, but any fee must be sizeable and well beyond the £35 million currently on the table.
