Crystal Palace Players Unhappy With Jean-Philippe Mateta After AC Milan Deal Collapsed

Published

Senior Crystal Palace players are unhappy with Jean-Philippe Mateta’s actions during the January transfer window, according to insider Mick Brown.

The France international was on the verge of joining AC Milan in a late deal worth around £30m, only for the Serie A giants to pull out on deadline day after he failed a medical, with the club citing an ongoing knee issue as their reason.

Mateta ended up staying put at Selhurst Park, but Palace have since paid £48m to replace him with Jorgen Strand Larsen from Wolves, and his place in the side is now far from assured after he asked to depart in the winter.

The 28-year-old is now considering knee surgery to correct the problem, but while speaking to Football Insider, Brown revealed that he has been told there are some issues in the camp between the striker and senior players in the dressing room over the way he approached the transfer.

“I don’t agree at all with the way Mateta has gone about things,” he said.

“He’s been making noise about how much he wants to be paid, which clubs are interested, all of that forgetting that Crystal Palace are the reason he’s in this position.

“It’s nothing we haven’t seen before, but in my experience, it doesn’t go down well with the squad.

“He refused to play against Nottingham Forest, saying his head wasn’t in the right place, and there have been suggestions he’s not been training either, that can have an impact on the squad.

“From what I hear, some of the stronger players in that dressing room are unhappy with him. There are some good lads in that dressing room, so I’m not surprised.

“They’ll say, you’ve made your bed, you’ll have to lie in it. They’re getting on with the job with players who want to play for Crystal Palace.

“Mateta can’t have an argument for that, because it’s not as if he’s been banging the goals in either. Plus, they’ve signed Strand Larsen now, so it might be hard for him to get back in.”

Summer Exit Looks Inevitable

Mateta has been unbelievable for Palace in recent years, especially under Oliver Glasner, but it now looks inevitable that he will be leaving the Eagles in the summer.

A move away in January looked nailed on, and but for the knee injury he’d be wearing red and black stripes rather than red and blue. But Palace have already made plans to continue without him, and if his head isn’t in the game, then they’re better off not using him at this point.

A summer move is obviously the answer for all parties, and it may be that Mateta is forced to sit out on the sidelines between now and the end of the season to ensure that squad morale isn’t damaged more.

Crystal Palace Want £26m ‘Warrior’ to Replace Lacroix

Crystal Palace are reportedly eyeing Toulouse defender Charlie Cresswell as a potential Maxence Lacroix replacement, according to Alan Nixon.

Lacroix looks likely to be headed for the exit door at Selhurst Park as Chelsea look to sign the French centre-back. Fabrizio Romano reports that the west London outfit have started talks to bring the 26-year-old to Stamford Bridge.

Palace sold Marc Guehi to Manchester City in January for £20m, and losing Lacroix will be a massive blow. He’s been a rock in central defence ever since arriving from VfL Wolfsburg in August 2024 for £18m.

Newly-appointed Eagles boss Pierre Sage will have been keen on working with the player who earned a call-up to France’s squad for the World Cup. Steve Parish’s transfer chiefs appear to be putting plans in place to try to deal with his exit and could turn to Cresswell.

Charlie Cresswell

Nixon reports on his Patreon that Palace are “looking into a deal for Cresswell” and Sage is a “big fan.” He’ll have come up against the former Leeds United man during his time coaching Lens and Lyon in Ligue 1.

Cresswell joined Toulouse from Leeds back in July 2024 for £3.8m, and he’s been a mainstay in the French team ever since. Last season, he made 32 appearances across competitions, even posting four goals and three assists.

Palace could sign the former England U21 international “if the price is right,” and he’s viewed as an ideal replacement for Lacroix. His powerful profile and “warrior” playing style could be a good fit.

Palace may not reinvest Lacroix money at all

Chadi Riad

There is a possibility that the South London outfit sticks with their current options. Chadi Riad has been excellent since returning from injury and has been a standout performer for Morocco at the World Cup.

Jaydee Canvot stepped up following Guehi’s departure and earned a regular starting berth in Oliver Glasner’s side. He partnered Lacroix and the always consistent Chris Richards in defence.

Cresswell could be a solid addition to Sage’s squad, but shouldn’t be viewed as a priority. A previous report from The Athletic claims that Toulouse values the player at around £26m after rebuffing an offer from Wolfsburg in January.

Palace could be aided by their relationship with the Ligue 1 club, from whom they signed Canvot last summer. They paid £23m for the young French centre-back and might be able to draw on prior business between the two clubs.

Spurs Offer ‘Fast’ Star £275,000-a-Week Contract

Tottenham have received a big boost in their reported bid to land a statement Premier League deal this summer. Spurs have been one of the busiest teams in the summer transfer window so far, snapping up four new signings already, including Martin Dubravka, who is their latest signing.

Roberto De Zerbi wants a whole new look to his Tottenham squad, and few can blame him, given how poorly Spurs have performed in the last two Premier League campaigns. There is a real ‘enough is enough’ feel to this particular Tottenham recruitment drive, and money will continue to be spent over the coming weeks and months.

Signing a midfielder is now at the top of Tottenham’s priority list, and there is good news for the North London on that front.

Tonali ready to make the move

Sandro Tonali Newcastle

Newcastle United star Sandro Tonali has emerged as one of Tottenham’s top targets in this window. In fact, Spurs have already seen a £75million offer for the Italian rejected, with Newcastle holding out for something between £80million and £90million.

There were reports doing the rounds that Tonali would prefer a move elsewhere as he looks to play Champions League football, but according to a fresh report from Sky Sports News. that is not the case.

According to the report, Tonali is, in fact, ready to join Tottenham, as long as they can reach a deal with a current club. It’s reported the midfielder is keen to play for De Zerbi, and he is said to have been offered £275,000-per-week to make the move to Hotspur Way.

Why do Tottenham want Tonali?

Tottenham are willing to spend big money to land Tonali, and that’s because they know they would be getting a proven Premier League player who is capable of playing in just about any midfield. De Zerbi wants this Spurs side to be dominant and attacking, and that’s what Tonali brings.

The Italian is an aggressive player whose game revolves around winning the ball back as quick as possible and driving up the pitch. Described as ‘fast’ and a ‘complete midfielder’ who is able to play as a six, eight and a 10 by The Athletic, Tonali – pardon the pun – is a tone-setting midfielder who demands those around him to play with an attacking mindset.

He is not the player for a more patient and structured team, but that is not how De Zerbi wants this Spurs team to play. He wants front-footed football, and Tonali can help make that happen.

Donald Trump’s involvement in the lead up to 2026 World Cup caused a myriad of problems, with the controversial US President’s actions in the months before the tournament sparking calls for major ‘boycotts’. It’s not the first time he’s irked anyone involved in world football, either.

The 80-year-old placed several nations that qualified for the 2026 World Cup on his travel ban list: Haiti, Iran, Ivory Coast, and Senegal. While occupants from several other countries, including Brazil, faced major problems getting into the United States.

FIFA Urged to Move 2026 World Cup From USA to UK Following Donald Trump Threats

The legendary British broadcaster has voiced his support for the World Cup to be moved closer to home amid rising political tension.

Trump has always been a fan of banning people from entering the United States of America, even dating back to his first presidential term, which lasted from 2017 to 2021. In fact, one of the greatest footballers in history, Diego Maradona, was denied entry into the country due to Trump.

Maradona, who won the World Cup in 1986, claimed he wasn’t allowed to set foot in America after he insulted Trump in a live TV appearance.

Speaking in 2018, the late icon’s lawyer, Matias Morla, explained what had happened. Morla told Argentine TV show ”Buenos días America’ (per The Mirror):

“You can imagine, I was in the embassy and I said, ‘Diego, please don’t talk about the United States. Because the interview was with TeleSur and I know how these things go.

“And the second question was ‘What do you think of Donald Trump?’

“He said ‘Donald Trump is a chirolita (a slang term for dummy or puppet).”

Maradona was managing Al Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates at the time, but needed to travel to Miami to make a court appearance in a case involving Claudia Villafane, his ex-wife.

His lawyer told him: “After this (insulting Trump), I’m going to have to represent you in Miami instead.”

In 2019, Maradona was in charge of Mexican club Dorados. After a victory, the Argentine hero dedicated the result to Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. He said:

“I want to dedicate this triumph to Nicolas Maduro and to all Venezuelans who are suffering. The sheriffs of the world — who are these Yankees?

“Just because they have the biggest bombs in the world they think are so much more advanced than us. No, they are not.”

Trump was still in his first run at the White House, and his clashing of heads with Maduro has even continued into his current term. In January 2026, Trump announced the U.S. military’s capture of Maduro after a long-standing conflict.
