F1 ‘Considering Major Major Rule Change’ Following Complaints

Published

on

Formula 1 are already considering making rule changes after numerous complaints following the Australian Grand Prix.

Mercedes enjoyed a fine opening weekend of the season as their drivers, George Russell and Kimi Antonelli, finished first and second in Melbourne.

The rest of the grid wasn’t too happy with how things played out Down Under, though. Many drivers outlined their frustrations with the new regulations after the race concluded.

Max Verstappen said over his team radio that the car is ‘simply frustrating to drive’. He also made his complaints known to the media after finishing sixth. He said, per the Guardian:

“I love racing but you can only take so much. I think F1 and the FIA [the governing body] are willing to listen, but I hope there is some action. It is not that I am the only one saying it. We are not critical just to be critical. We are critical for a reason. We want it to be proper Formula One on steroids, but today that wasn’t the case.”

F1 has adopted regulations for this season that require careful management of electrical energy. This led to an eye-opening 120 overtakes in Melbourne, almost three times as many as last year’s race.

Like Verstappen, reigning world champion Lando Norris was not happy at all, saying that a big accident will take place under the current rules. He said:

“It is chaos, and we are going to have a big accident. Which is a shame because we are driving, and the ones just waiting for something to happen and to go quite horribly wrong, and that is not a nice position to be in.

“Depending on what drivers do, you can have closing speeds of 30-50kph, and when someone hits another driver at that speed you are going to fly and go over the fence and do a lot of damage to yourself and maybe to others, and that is a pretty horrible thing to think about.”

Russell, like Norris and Verstappen, has also demanded an immediate rule change despite his win in Melbourne.

According to the Race, Formula 1 chiefs don’t think it makes sense to rush through changes to try to improve things. However, they are closely monitoring proceedings and are ready to accept that the levels of energy harvesting and deployment may not be pitched at the right level.

It’s been reported that F1 chiefs and teams will consider changes to the 2026 rules for as early as the Japanese Grand Prix in March. Discussions will take place after this weekend’s race in China, where it will be decided whether any action needs to be taken.

FIA Chief Speaks Out About Rule Changes

F1 Final Pre-Season Testing: Every Driver's Fastest Lap Time in Bahrain

Speaking ahead of the race in Australia, the FIA’s Nikolas Tombazis said that rule changes could be made soon. He said:

“We didn’t believe it was realistic to make changes for energy management here. We had a meeting with the teams about 10 days ago, after the Bahrain testing, to review the matter.

“The team’s unanimous position was that we should stick to the current arrangements for the first few races and to review the matter when we have a bit more data.

“Our intention is after China to be reviewing the energy management situation. We have a few aces up our sleeves on that, which we didn’t want to introduce ahead of the first race as a knee-jerk reaction, and which we will review with the teams after China.”

Despite his team’s dominance in Australia, Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff has welcomed any changes, accepting that tweaks may be the best course of action. He said:

“I didn’t hear any of the drivers speaking particularly good of the last cars and saying it was the best car. So we tend to be very nostalgic in looking at past events.

“But clearly, we are all stakeholders of the sport. We need to have a great spectacle, the best cars in the world and the best drivers, and being exciting for the fans. That’s why we just need to look at the product.

“One perspective is the view of the drivers, which is an important perspective. Stefano [Domenicali] would say that the single matrix that matters to him is whether the fans like it. That is what we need to look at. If it needs to be tweaked, if we need to adjust, I think we have the flexibility in Formula 1 to always take those decisions.”

Fabrizio Romano Issues Marcus Rashford to Tottenham Transfer Update

Tottenham are being linked with England World Cup attacker Marcus Rashford as they look to continue their busy summer of recruitment. Spurs have wasted no time in this summer window so far, already snapping up three new signings, including three freebies and a statement defensive signing in Jan Paul van Hecke.

The signings will keep coming as Roberto De Zerbi looks to give this Tottenham team a whole new look to ensure there is no third-straight bottom half finish.

A midfield signing appears to be the next priority, but Spurs are also working on other potential deals, and a World Cup Three Lion has emerged as a possible option.

Spurs have been linked with a move for Manchester United and England winger Rashford in recent days. According to Fabrizio Romano, a deal could be on the cards, but there is nothing advanced at this stage.

“Many questions on Marcus Rashford and Tottenham, we had these links on Marcus Rashford and Tottenham and if it’s possible to see this deal happening,” Romano said on his YouTube channel. “If Tottenham can go for Marcus Rashford, if Tottenham is a possibility being considered. My understanding at the moment between Marcus Rashford and Tottenham is that there is nothing advanced, nothing close, nothing realistic as of today.

“Should the situation change I will be here to let you know because the Marcus Rashford situation is an open situation, a situation they have to clarify as soon as possible at Manchester United. There are several things keeping this open for Marcus Rashford but the understanding is at the moment there is nothing concrete or advanced with Tottenham.”

Why Rashford wasn’t signed by Barcelona

Rashford played a big part in Barca winning the LaLiga title, scoring 14 and assisting as many across all competitions last season. The England international will have hoped to land a permanent deal on the back of that form, but the Catalan giants did not activate their option to buy.

They did not – and do not – rule out a deal at this stage, but their current priority is to find a new number nine to replace Robert Lewandowski. The Blaugrana are well aware that a striker deal could be very costly, and so they will revisit the Rashford situation if he remains available later in the window. The same transfer stance saw Barca miss out on Bernardo Silva to Real Madrid, but unless they are not pivoting from the current approach, and that could see the price they have to pay for Rashford increase, given the clause is no longer available to them, and it may mean the England international goes elsewhere.

Having retired from the UFC himself last year, pound-for-pound great Jones has now weighed-in on Poirier’s arrest. ‘Bones’ frequently encountered issues with the law across his own career and took to social media to share his thoughts with his former colleague.

“Wanted to write and tell my [expletive] Justin Poirier to keep your head up,” Jones wrote on X, while getting Poirier’s name wrong. “Life happens. This too shall pass. Just keep yourself busy my man, it helps.”

In a separate tweet, Jones expressed his admiration for how honest Poirier had been about his personal struggles since hanging up his gloves.

“I do respect the fact that he’s being honest about his mental state,” remarked Jones.

“I swear, in some weird way, retiring from UFC almost feels like retiring from the military or something. There’s so many similarities. I have conversations with my special forces buddies about this type of stuff all the time. It’s a huge change, or at least it can be.”

Jon Jones Teases UFC Comeback

As if to illustrate how difficult it can be to walk away from the life of a professional fighter, Jones went on to tease a potential comeback of his own, revealing that recent stem cell treatments had helped to combat the arthritis that had initially played a role in convincing him to retire.

Jones is currently training amateur wrestling standout Gable Steveson ahead of his Octagon debut at UFC 329 next month and he hinted that the experience had prompted him to consider his own fighting future.

“Never say never. Right now we are finishing up Gable [Steveson]‘s training camp. He’s looking extraordinary. I’ve been his main training partner, and I’m moving like I never left. Stem cells must be working,” he wrote.
