Every 2025-26 Premier League Captain Ranked From Worst to Best

Published

on

Summary

  • Club captains in the Premier League don’t have to be the best players – leadership qualities are key.
  • Each captain’s individual ability, leadership qualities, team success, availability, and experience were considered in the ranking.
  • Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk and Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes are the two standout captains in the Premier League right now.

The Premier League is filled with incredible players, but every team needs one man who will stand above the rest and lead his team to glory. Being club captain is not an easy task, requiring dedication, passion, composure and a fair dose of natural ability, too. To be selected as club captain, you don’t necessarily have to be the best player at your club. That said, a few of the captains in this division are definitely among the best players in the Premier League.

Some may simply be the longest-serving player at their respective club and have been rewarded for their loyalty by being handed the armband, while others are newer to the role of captain, but excel nonetheless. With all that in mind, all 20 Premier League captains for the 2025/26 season have been ranked from worst to best, based on the factors below.

Arne Slot, Mikel Arteta and Pep Guardiola.

Toti Gomes, Wolverhampton Wanderers

toti gomes

Mario Lemina was only given the armband at Wolverhampton Wanderers at the start of the 2024/25 season when Max Kilman left to join West Ham. Yet, just a few short months later, the former Juventus midfielder was stripped of duties and the role fell on the shoulders of Nelson Semedo, who has now left the club.

Now at Fenerbahce, Semedo passed the responsibility to his former teammate and compatriot Toti Gomes, who is crucially important to Wolves’ defensive solidity. Given the level of talent he is up against and the fact Wolves are rooted to the bottom of the Premier League, it’s hard to argue that he deserves a spot any further up the list, isn’t it?

19

Adam Smith, Bournemouth

AFC Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola with Adam Smith

Former captain Neto joined Arsenal on loan towards the end of the summer transfer window in 2024, and so someone needed to fill the Brazilian goalkeeper’s void. It was a fairly straightforward replacement for Andoni Iraola, who turned to a man who first joined south coast-based Bournemouth on loan in 2010.

Permanently, Adam Smith has been at the club since 2014 and has played in League One all the way to the Premier League for the Cherries, and the defender bleeds red and black. There was no better choice to replace the out-on-loan shot-stopper than the former Tottenham youngster; his post-match interview after Antoine Semenyo was allegedly abused earlier in the campaign was the perfect example of Smith being a tip-top captain.

18

Nathan Collins, Brentford

Brentford captain Nathan Collins applauding the supporters

After Christian Norgaard left to join Arsenal and Thomas Frank left to join Tottenham Hotspur in the same summer, Brentford were in a bit of a pickle – and Keith Andrews, who replaced Frank, had to make a crucial decision: who would replace the former captain? Up stepped centre-back Nathan Collins.

Still just 24 years of age, the former Wolves defender was indispensable for those of an Old Gold persuasion – and, therefore, he was the perfect candidate when discussions were had over the summer. He can see the entire pitch from his position at the back and his availability record gave him a big green tick next to his name.

17

Josh Cullen, Burnley

josh cullen

A tenacious defensive midfielder of Irish descent, Josh Cullen – who has played for the likes of Charlton Athletic and Bradford City in his career – is a beloved figure around Turf Moor. Not afraid to cover every blade of grass when he is on the pitch, his teammates know they are always going to get 100% out of their captain.

Following the departure of Josh Brownhill, who moved to Al-Shabab in Saudi Arabia over the summer, the decision was quite simple. The Clarets, upon achieving promotion to the top flight, needed someone experienced to take over the role and Cullen was the optimal candidate. Whether Scott Parker and his team have made the correct appointment, however, remains to be seen.

16

Ethan Ampadu, Leeds United

Ethan Ampadu

Although a move to a team of a bigger stature is perennially in the pipeline for Welsh midfielder Ethan Ampadu, he remains on Leeds United’s books for the time being. Appointed captain in the summer of 2024 after leading the Whites out on a number of occasions throughout the second half of 2023/24, his influence was unmatched.

A loveable character but also a terrific player, his versatility allows him to dart around the pitch with ease and link up with plenty of his Leeds teammates. A Chelsea academy graduate, Ampadu has been at Elland Road following a smattering of loan spells since the summer of 2023. Neither the club nor the player have looked back since.

15

Ryan Yates, Nottingham Forest

ryan yates

A product of the Nottingham Forest academy, Ryan Yates is Forest through and through and was the worthy replacement to take over from Joe Worrall when he left the club in August 2024. For all the changes to the squad that the Garibaldi have seen ever since they were promoted in 2022, Yates has remained a consistent presence and is enjoying his best spell yet with his boyhood club.

In terms of quality and leadership, there are better options. But for the City Ground outfit, there is really no one more deserving of the honour. Yates’ rise from battling for minutes in the National League to becoming the captain of Forest in the Europa League is a rise built on resilience and hard work; two crucial things that are required from a Premier League skipper.

14

Tom Cairney, Fulham

Tom Cairney applauding the Fulham supporters

Tom Cairney has now been captain of Fulham for a grand total of nine years, which is an incredible feat in itself, making him the longest-serving captain on this list. His earlier days at Fulham saw the Scottish midfielder far more involved, and he earned many plaudits for his role in helping Fulham return to the Premier League in 2022 by winning the Championship title.

At the time of writing, he’s played 378 times for the Cottagers now, and even at the age of 35, he’s rarely unavailable as Maro Silva and Co look to finish in the top half of the table season after season. While he has been mainly utilised from the bench in games so far in the current term, Nottingham-born Cairney remains a valuable influence at the club.

13

Seamus Coleman, Everton

Seamus Coleman

Seamus Coleman’s 15 years at Everton makes him the longest-serving player on this list. Ever since arriving from the Irish leagues, the defender has been one of the top right-backs in the Premier League. Reminiscent of the classic full-backs of the ’90s, Coleman is a simple yet solid player, who always puts in a shift, and does the dirty work for his team.

The Irishman has been an incredible servant to Everton, through good times and bad, and is a sterling example for the players around him at all times. Had we made this ranking three years ago, Coleman would certainly find himself higher up. But his lack of availability on the pitch in 2024/25 and 2025/26 costs him given many captains are playing week-in week-out.

12

Lewis Dunk, Brighton & Hove Albion

Lewis Dunk

For the past few years, Brighton & Hove Albion have seemingly just gotten better and better. Despite a run of different managers, which is now Fabian Hurzeler, the Seagulls have always maintained a stylish and entertaining style of football, but that is largely built on the foundations of a very solid defence. At the heart of that backline is the ever-dependable Lewis Dunk, who is a six-cap England international.

Dunk has enjoyed a real rise to prominence in the last couple of years too. The towering centre-half has led Brighton into Europe, helped them climb the Premier League table, and is now in his 12th season in the senior side after graduating from the club’s academy in 2013.

11

Cristian Romero, Tottenham Hotspur

Cristian Romero in action for Tottenham Hotspur

In the summer, Tottenham Hotspur had the job of replacing the talent – and leadership – of Son Heung-min. The former was taken up by the likes of Xavi Simons, but the latter has fallen in the lap of Cristian Romero, who has been with the club since moving from Atalanta in the summer of 2022 and he’s forged a wonderful partnership with Micky van de Ven since the Dutchman’s arrival

A commanding presence at the back, Romero has never been afraid to put his body on the line in search of a victory and his performance in the 2024/25 Europa League final, which saw the north Londoners lift gold after beating Manchester United, just proved that he was the right man for the job. The biggest let-down of his is the fact he loves a red card, having now been brandished the most in Tottenham’s Premier League history, meaning he’s not always there for his team.

US Media Place Blame on Christian Pulisic For World Cup Exit vs Belgium

Published

on

By

Mauricio Pochettino’s USA side bowed out of their World Cup campaign embarrassingly, being on the receiving end of a 4-1 thrashing by Belgium. The host nation had a promising start to the tournament, finishing top of their group and beating Bosnia & Herzegovina in the Round of 32, but that soon changed in the next game.

There was controversy before the game, with Folarin Balogun’s red card being suspended after intervention from USA President Donald Trump, meaning that the ex-Arsenal striker was allowed to feature, much to the benefit of the USA, as the Monaco man had already scored three in four games.

As much as it frustrated Belgium, it didn’t matter as they went on to dominate from start to finish. Pochettino’s side looked a shadow of themselves in previous games, and they became the final host nation to be knocked out of the tournament, as well as missing out on the chance to make it to their first quarter-final since 2002.

Christian Pulisic is one of the biggest stars in the USA national team, but he has failed to show the expected performance levels throughout the tournament, only managing to register one assist.

The Milan winger was subbed off in the 59th minute of the 4-1 loss, and many are arguing his American legacy has been tainted. Despite being the leader of the national team for some time, Pulisic has failed to lead the side to glory or even to the latter stages of any tournament, and his performance against Belgium hasn’t helped his case.

American-based website Sports Illustrated hit out at Pulisic following the disappointing game. They said: “The USMNT needed its talisman to step up and be the difference-maker, and he failed the task. Even before his premature exit, the star winger struggled to generate anything offensively. He had just one touch in Belgium’s box and didn’t get a single shot off.”

They weren’t the only ones to give their verdict on Captain America, as former USA women’s star Carli Loyd told Fox Sports: “You wanted some of those big-time players to step up in a big moment. I gotta be honest, I was a bit disappointed with Christian Pulisic.

I think, whether he wants to be the star of this team or not, we didn’t see enough from him in this particular game, and really the whole World Cup,”

FOX Sports Radio’s Jamie Fox also said: “It’s an uncomfortable conversation because for the longest time it was, ‘Pulisic’s gonna do it. Pulisic’s gonna do it. He’s our guy; he’s Captain America.’ And now you’re looking at Christian Pulisic, where his World Cup career is just about done.

When you say, OK, his legacy, Christian Pulisic, the golden era, it’s not what we thought it would be or not what we needed it to be. The hype for him and what we thought he could do … he’s just been OK and he’s been injured. The whole Christian Pulisic era is underachieving.”

Pulisic has led the team for many years now, and there still isn’t a lot to show for his efforts. The furthest the team has reached in the World Cup is the round of 16, and Pulisic failed to step up to the plate in this tournament.

In fairness to the former Chelsea attacker, he did pick up an injury against Paraguay in the group stages, and has been trying to manage the injury since, which makes it no surprise he was subbed off in the 59th minute against Belgium.

Pulisic registered 36 touches during the game, completing only 2 of his 6 attempted dribbles, whilst losing six out of his 8 duels. It doesn’t come as a surprise that he was subbed off during the game, and many would’ve expected more from ‘the LeBron James of Soccer’.

Egypt Boss Spits At Argentina Fans After Loss

Published

Hossam Hassan could be in serious trouble with FIFA after shocking footage emerged appearing to show him taking part in disgusting actions towards Argentina fans. Egypt were just 11 minutes away from reaching the World Cup quarter-finals after goals from Yasser Ibrahim and Mostafa Ziko put the Pharaohs two goals to the good.

But strikes from Cristian Romero, Lionel Messi and Enzo Fernandez completed a dramatic turnaround for the world champions, who moved one step closer to a second shot at immortality after a devastating 14-minute onslaught. During that spell, however, several contentious decisions added fuel to the fire. A number of Egypt players vented their frustrations at the referee after two penalty appeals were waved away, with a VAR expert later claiming one of those decisions were incorrect.

While a bit of needle is part and parcel of a World Cup tournament, emotions were clearly running high in the aftermath. Footage appears to show the Egypt manager letting his frustrations get the better of him as he became involved in a heated altercation with Argentina supporters while heading down the tunnel, just minutes after being shown a yellow card and drawing backlash for an apparent ‘X’ gesture.

Egypt coach Hossam Hassan holds his hands up

Hassan is a vocal supporter of the Palestinian cause and has used the World Cup stage to make political statements on several occasions throughout the tournament. As a result, the sight of an Israeli flag being waved in front of him by supporters of the nation that had just inflicted such a cruel elimination appeared to be the final straw.

However, as footage appears to show, he may have crossed a line during his fury. A video circulating on social media allegedly shows Hassan spitting in the direction of Argentina fans as tensions boiled over in the immediate aftermath of the dramatic defeat (watch the incident below):

Under FIFA rules, spitting at another person is treated as a serious offence and can lead to a significant suspension. FIFA’s Disciplinary Code lists spitting as a form of assault, alongside actions such as hitting, kicking, biting or punching. As such, the code states there should be at least three matches’ suspension or an appropriate period of time.

He was later asked if his comments on Palestine were the reason Egypt were punished. “I don’t want to talk about that. We were speaking about a humanitarian cause. Does anyone feel for the one who lost his sight, or the one whose hand was cut off? We want football to help spread humanity,” he reacted.

“They must support this cause because it is a humanitarian one. In that country, children are dying while wearing Argentina, City, Real Madrid and Barcelona shirts. These people love you and they love football, but you are still killing them.”

Hossam Hassan Accuses FIFA of Favouring Lionel Messi For Marketing

During his post-match interview, he also stunningly claimed that FIFA are working with Argentina and Lionel Messi for ‘marketing purposes. He told media (watch his untranslated interview below):

“They want Argentina and Messi to stay in the World Cup for marketing. If they wanted Argentina to win, why invite other teams to participate? This match was clearly rigged, and the whole world witnessed it.

“We were better than Argentina, and football is unfair. We had a clear penalty that the referee didn’t award, and Ziko’s goal at the start of the second half was disallowed, even though it was perfectly legitimate.”

He added: “I will boycott watching the remaining matches of the tournament as a form of protest. I told the players that I thank them and that they can face the biggest teams in the world, provided there is fairness. FIFA promotes fair play, but we don’t see it on the pitch.”

“I’m not convinced with this outcome. I’m not convinced with the way things unfolded during this match. I do not want ‌to try to put it nicely here with beautiful wording, selective wording, and saying hard luck, and so on and so forth. We have been treated unfairly today. We have suffered injustice.”

Lionel Messi’s Argentina Save FIFA Millions After World Cup Win Over Egypt

Published

Lionel Messi came to the rescue once again, inspiring Argentina’s 3-2 comeback in their Round of 16 match against Egypt. Lionel Scaloni’s side did look to be heading out of the competition after going 2-0 down, and Messi missing a penalty, but you can never doubt one of the world’s greatest.

With just 10 minutes left to go, Messi assisted Cristian Romero’s header, then scored a goal of his own before Enzo Fernández sealed the deal with a header off a cross from Lautaro Martinez.

There were some controversial moments during the game, with Egypt having a goal disallowed for a foul that had happened at the complete opposite end of the pitch, whilst Argentina scored a goal in a very similar way. Still, the potential foul on Egypt star Mohammed Salah wasn’t awarded, meaning the winning goal stood and Egypt were eliminated.

It isn’t the first time that Argentina have been awarded some controversial decisions in their favour this tournament, and the post-match comments of Egypt forward Mostafa Ziko have only fuelled the conspiracies further.

FIFA Benefit From Argentina’s World Cup Win

There is no doubt that Messi is one of the most recognisable stars on the planet, let alone one of the biggest footballers. The Argentinian has lit up the football stage for 2 decades, and his stardom has only been more commercialised since his move to David Beckham’s American side, Inter Miami.

Having Messi still participating at the World Cup in America will only generate more revenue for FIFA, as fans will happily pay more money for tickets to matches in which they can get a glimpse of one of the biggest stars in the world.

This looked like it was going to fail during Argentina’s game against Egypt, as Messi missed a penalty inside the first 30 minutes, and Egypt later took a 2-0 lead against Scaloni’s side.

However, Messi was able to do what he does best, as he inspired a comeback in the last ten minutes of the tie, assisting Cristian Romero’s header and scoring a half-volley, whilst Enzo Fernandez headed home in the dying minutes of the game to book a place in the quarter-finals of the competition.

It was reported that when Argentina were 2-0 down, tickets for the quarter-finals had dropped from the $1,900 mark earlier in the day to just under $1000, before shooting straight back up to $2000 when the full-time whistle had blown and Messi was 100% certain to be appearing in the next stage of the tournament.

Have FIFA Been Biased Towards Argentina?

Lionel Messi (Argentina) vs Algeria at World Cup Danny Medley via IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters

There have certainly been some decisions during this tournament which have favoured Argentina. Messi could have potentially received a red card in the group stages against Algeria, after appearing to catch the back of the Algerian player’s calf with his studs, yet the referee took no on-field action, and a VAR review was also in agreement that Messi should stay on the pitch.

Their most recent game against Egypt certainly hasn’t helped the biased conspiracy claims either, with Egypt appearing to have a perfectly good goal ruled out whilst Argentina got away with the exact same scenario when they scored their winning goal.

Egypt forward Mostafa Ziko accused the competition of being ‘rigged’ to favour Argentina, and whilst the suggestion seems very emotionally fuelled, FIFA haven’t helped themselves and could have some questions to answer.
