20 Best-Paid Sports Ranked By Earnings Per Hour of Competing
There is so much money in sport, it’s always fascinating to learn which athletes are the best-paid across the globe. In 2026, Cristiano Ronaldo is understood to make the most money of any sportsperson, with the Al-Nassr striker picking up $260m annually.
Boxer Canelo Alvarez ranks second on that list, showing that it’s not just footballers who earn the big bucks. At the recent Winter Olympics, freestyle skier Eileen Gu was the best-paid athlete, although she makes most of her money through endorsements, with only a small fraction of it coming via her sport.
Of course, to reach the top of their game, all athletes must work incredibly hard. That said, when it comes to time actually spent competing, things can vary quite a lot. For instance, Usain Bolt sealed his sporting legacy in 9.58 seconds, while it takes hours for any marathon runner to win their race.
With that in mind, the people at Foresight Sports have attempted to work out which athletes get paid the most per hour they spend competing in their sport. The research examined 36 professional sports to calculate how much athletes earn for each hour they spend in active competition.
The study collected average annual salaries across different sports and leagues, then measured how many competitive events athletes participate in during a typical season. The report also tracked actual playing time per event, excluding warm-ups, timeouts, and breaks between plays. The study then divided annual salaries by total competition hours to show what athletes make per hour.

Since Ronaldo joined Al-Nassr in 2023, the Saudi Pro League has aimed to establish itself as one of the best footballing competitions in the world. It’s actually still not considered among the top 30, but it certainly is one of the best-paid.
Ranking 10th on this list, players make an average annual salary of $3,200,000 – although the biggest earners like Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Saido Mane make far more than that. All in all, though, for every hour a Saudi Pro League star takes to the pitch, they can make on average a cool $112,280.70.

While the Premier League is a long way ahead of the Saudi Pro League when it comes to pure footballing quality, it’s only just a little ahead when it comes to the average wage. Erling Haaland’s weekly wage at Manchester City is the highest, as he makes £525,000, which would only see him rank sixth in Saudi.
However, the average annual salary is much higher in England, at $4,100,000. As a result, players can make a total of $113,573.41 for every 60 minutes of action they see in the English top-flight. According to the research, these two leagues are the highest-paying in football across the globe.

Snowboarding
It might surprise some to see that Snowboarding beats football on this list, but it’s important to remember the figures are worked out on time spent actually in action. On average, there are only 12 snowboarding events in a season, and with races over pretty fast, that means athletes are competing for just under an hour across the entire FIS/X Games.
As such, while the annual average is $100,000, snowboarders are said to make $125,000.00 per hour of play time. American snowboarder Chloe Kim is one of the best-paid athletes in the sport, making $4 million annually.

Basketball
The NBA is by far the most popular basketball competition in the world, and it’s no secret that the star athletes get very well-paid. With an average annual salary of $11,910,000, this is actually the second-highest figure in the top 20. However, as each game consists of four quarters of 10 minutes each, basketball falls down the rankings when salaries are divided by earnings per hour of play-time.
Indeed, with 65.6 hours spent in action across an entire NBA campaign, players end up making a total of $181,554.88 every hour. Not a bad figure, by any means. According to reports, Stephen Curry will make a whopping $62,587,158 while playing for the Golden State Warriors in 2026/27. No other basketball star will make more.

Track & Field
Much like snowboarding, the average track and field star only makes $100,000. But as they spend even less time in action, just 0.4 on average per season, they sit very high up on this list. Indeed, if they were to spend an hour competing, they could make as much as $250,000.
American track and field star Noah Lyles, who competes in the 60 meters, 100 meters and 200 meters events, is one of the best-known sprinters in the world. In 2026, reports claim that his net worth could be as much as $7 million.

Formula 1 is one of the most popular sports in the world, and with drivers earning an average annual salary of $10,000,000, there’s an incredible amount of money pumped into events each year. The competition takes far longer than a 100m dash, with races lasting around 90 minutes each.
It’s understood that Max Verstappen makes more money than anyone else in the sport, with the Dutchman on a salary of $76,000,000 in 2026. It’s no surprise that Lewis Hamilton isn’t far behind him, making $70,500,000 every year at Ferrari. Lando Norris, Oscar Piastri and Charles Leclerc all make up the top five.

Riders participate in 20 races per season, with each race running about 45 minutes. That comes to 15 hours of competition time, which brings down the hourly cost of the average $5,000,000 salary.
As of 2025, Frenchman Fabio Quartararo has the biggest MotoGP salary, securing the top spot with his $13m-per-year deal at Yamaha. After that, Marc Marquez makes $9.7m with Ducati, while Francesco Bagnaia (also Ducati) is on $7.6m.

As such, they make $333,333.33 for every hour they spend competing, which is the same as those MotoGP drivers. The likes of Conor McGregor, Khabib Nurmagomedov, and Jon Jones have all made millions through the incredibly popular sport.

50 Highest-Paid Athletes of All Time
From football stars Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, to American legends Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods – here are the top-earning athletes ever.
Anyone who has ever tuned in to the Super Bowl will be under no illusions as to just how grand and showy American Football can be as a spectacle. The NFL is a wonderfully entertaining competition that costs a mind-blowing amount of money to run.
The average salary is $2,700,000, but with the stop-start nature of the sport, the ball is only in play for about 18 minutes per game (17, in a typical season). That means players accumulate just 5 hours of actual game action across an entire season, which helps boost the hourly pay rate up to a hefty $529,411.76.

Boxing (Elite Level)
Coming in at number one, as the best-paid sport per hour of competitive action, is boxing. Because top-tier fighters step into the ring just twice yearly, with each bout lasting around 36 minutes of actual fighting across 12 rounds, as much as $16,666,666.67 can be made every sixty minutes.
A spokesperson from Foresight Sports commented on the study: “People think NBA players have it easy because they make millions, but they’re actually working more hours than most athletes. Basketball players compete 66 hours per season compared to boxers who fight for just over an hour. When you account for practice, travel, and physical recovery, team sport athletes put in thousands of hours yearly. Individual sports like boxing can charge more per event because scarcity drives demand. You can’t watch your favourite boxer every week like you can watch LeBron.”

Donald Trump’s Lawyers’ Role in Balogun’s Red Card Being Suspended
Folarin Balogun’s availability for the United States of America for the World Cup clash against Belgium has sparked controversy in world football.
The former Arsenal striker was dismissed in the Round of 32 win against Bosnia & Herzegovina after finding the net earlier in the same match. However, the red card caused outrage among US supporters, as Balogun appeared to accidentally land on his opponent’s ankle.
While it was widely seen as the wrong decision by the referee and VAR on the day, the way the ban has now been suspended for a year hasn’t gone down well.
FIFA denied the US government played any part in the decision, but it has become public knowledge that a call was made from the White House.
Trump Admin Brought in ‘Expert Lawyers’ For Balogun Case
It has now been claimed that White House officials were a bit more involved than anyone is admitting. In fact, OutKick’s Clay Travis has reported that Trump’s administration took legal steps to ensure the striker would be available for the next game.
That involved gathering ‘expert lawyers’ to present evidence to FIFA. Their biggest argument was that slow-motion replays violated rules set by football’s governing body.
Belgian FA’s Reaction to FIFA Suspending Folarin Balogun’s One-Game Ban
The American striker will be available against Belgium.
Travis posted on X: “President Trump, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, and White House task force head Andrew Giuliani put together a team of elite lawyers — from outside the government — to challenge the Flo Balogun red card.”
He then added that Trump even alerted Gianni Infantino that the appeal was filed and let him know his feelings on the matter. Although it is still maintained that FIFA’s independent committee made the final call:
“Specifically, they challenged the use of slow-motion instant replay to give the red card, which they argued violated FIFA rules. The president also conveyed to Gianni Infantino, FIFA’s president, that the appeal had been filed and he believed the red card penalty was excessive.
“FIFA’s independent committee reviewed the decision and agreed the penalty was incorrectly given, rescinding it under their rule 27 authority.”
US President Thanked FIFA For Balogun Ban Decision
Immediately after Sunday’s news broke that Mauricio Pochettino would have his star striker available for the last-16 tie against Belgium, the country’s president was quick to post a social media message.

The Swede is ‘happy’ for the USA.
Trump thanked FIFA ‘for doing what was right’. Doing so only fuelled the outcry that something suspicious may have happened behind the scenes between known friends Trump and Infantino.
The 80-year-old posted: “Thank you to FIFA for doing what was right, and reversing a great injustice! President DONALD J. TRUMP.”

Wayne Rooney Blasts FIFA’s Decision to Suspend Folarin Balogun’s Red Card
Wayne Rooney has torn into FIFA president Gianni Infantino, telling him he should be “ashamed of himself” for the decision to suspend Folarin Balogun’s red card ban for a year.
The USA striker, who has impressed at his home World Cup, scoring three goals and providing one assist in the three matches he has played thus far, was sent off against Bosnia & Herzegovina in the round of 32 match last week.
Balogun was initially not sent off, but after a VAR review, referee Raphael Claus deemed it to have been serious foul play, with the replays showing the striker planted his studs down the back of Tarik Muharemovic’s achilles and turning his ankle.
Balogun felt red card decision was harsh
It was an innocuous incident, with Balogun clearly showing no intent as he vied for the ball, trying simply to plant his foot in the ground as he challenged for possession, but the rules are clear and the incident did not look good when watched back.
Speaking after the game, Balogun said: “I think as you all saw, if there’s nowhere else to put your leg, it’s going to be unavoidable. I’ve seen many different opinions and takes, but, for me personally, I think a yellow card would have been fair.”
Balogun was expected to miss the USA’s round of 16 clash with Belgium as a result of the sending off, but FIFA have suspended the ban for a year, with US president Donald Trump thanking them for “doing what was right”.
It is understood that Trump lobbied FIFA to lift the ban. FIFA have stated that the ban was suspended “in line with Article 27 of the FIFA disciplinary code, which allows it to suspend red cards so long as the discipline is not related to match-fixing”.
Speaking on the BBC, Rooney could not believe the decision.
He said: “I think it’s an absolute disgrace, I really do. I know it was UEFA but I got a three-game ban before Euro 2012 so I was due to miss the three group games and I got asked, or basically told that if I go over to Switzerland and do a training session with a bunch of kids the third game gets taken off.
“I agreed to do it because I didn’t want the three-game ban but I thought it was wrong. But for this to be suspended, they either take the red card away, which I think is probably the right decision and then he can play but to suspend it for a year I think is an absolute disgrace.
Rooney takes aim at FIFA president
“Infantino should be ashamed of this because I think the sportsmanship of this game is in question here and if I’m one of the USA’s opponents I would be absolutely fuming, I think it’s wrong in every way.”
Belgium were fuming, with a statement reading: “The Royal Belgian Football Association is astonished by FIFA’s decision to declare suspended United States player Folarin Balogun eligible to play in the USA-Belgium match on Monday.

Mexican Media Cast Verdict on England After Chaotic World Cup Win
Media outlets in Mexico have made their feelings about England clear after the two nations played out a classic World Cup tie at the Azteca Stadium on Sunday night.
A Jude Bellingham brace and Harry Kane penalty were enough for the Three Lions to eliminate one of the host nations on their own turf after a week of speculation around how they’d cope in the conditions. The altitude inside the famous ground turned out to be no problem.
Thomas Tuchel’s side were forced to work extremely hard by a team that breezed through the group stage and Round of 32 without conceding a single goal, but their attacking quality proved to be vital. Now, local media have weighed in on the 1966 winners.
It was a close encounter which threatened to boil over at times due to the tense atmosphere inside the ground, but the press in Mexico have been full of praise for the English players.
Several outlets made sure to give credit to the opposition while expressing the disappointment of being beaten on home soil. Mediotiempo wrote (per Daily Record):
“That dreaded altitude never affected the English, who arrived prepared for all kinds of hostilities and crushed the Mexican dream of reaching the quarter-finals for the first time in history with three goals.
“It was disappointing to see them fail defensively at the worst possible moment, succumbing to the infamous English long balls. In the end, they fought hard, but with little skill and a lot of heart.”
‘Game of His Life’ – England Fans Stunned By Unsung Hero in World Cup Win vs Mexico
England stunned Mexico at the 2026 World Cup with a thrilling 3-2 victory, and one unsung hero has received plenty of praise.
Speaking about Javier Aguirre’s efforts to throw the kitchen sink at 10-man England, they conceded that they were simply facing a ‘top team’. “He pinned the English back in their own half, but no one could provide the spark of creativity needed to break down a top team, and it all ended as it began: just a dream.”
The Mexican Record were even more complimentary of specific players in the Three Lions’ line-up. “It wasn’t South Africa. Nor Korea or the Czech Republic. Not even Ecuador. It was a world champion, the team with the most powerful league on the planet,” they wrote.
Kane and Bellingham were among the handful of players singled out for praise: “A team with the legendary Harry Kane. With stars like Bellingham, man of the match, or Saka, or Rice. Even Pickford shone.”
Jude Bellingham Praised For Actions After England Win
In addition to his star power on the pitch, Bellingham specifically has captured the imagination of Mexicans for his gesture after the game. He has been praised by El Universal for his actions, which ‘touched many hearts’.
A video quickly emerged online of Bellingham comforting 17-year-old wonderkid Gilberto Mora. The youngster asked to swap shirts with the Real Madrid ace, who responded by saying: “Give me yours too.”
The Mexican outlet appreciated the Englishman taking the time to acknowledge the rising star amid his country’s celebrations: “Undoubtedly, a gesture to applaud from the English player, who, full of euphoria and joy at qualifying for the quarter-finals, took the time to acknowledge the Mexican gem, who played a good game.”
