15 Best Players to Never Play at a World Cup (Ranked)
While the Champions League sees the best players on the planet compete for the European Cup with those iconic big ears every year, the vast majority would certainly be prepared to give it up to win a World Cup. Make no mistake: we are talking about the most prestigious football competition in the world.
On the unforgettable international showpiece, which is watched by millions, Pele once said:
“The World Cup is a very important way to measure the good players, and the great ones. It is a test of a great player.”
A global tournament of such high standards that even some of the game’s greatest legends have never won it, leaving the opportunity to lay their hands on the mythical golden trophy to slip away before their very eyes. But there is nothing trivial about simply taking part in this extraordinary event.
In fact, many players would trade part of their record of achievements for the chance to take part. That’s why GIVEMESPORT has compiled a list of the 15 greatest players who have never had the honour of playing in the World Cup finals.

Johnny Giles
Republic of Ireland
Despite being of diminutive size, Johnny Giles made a name for himself as an all-action midfielder who was not afraid to be tough in the tackle. At club level, the central midfielder – widely regarded as one of the best Republic of Ireland players in football history – played for Manchester United, Leeds United and the like.
He even became a two-time First Division winner in 1968/69 and 1973/74, but the Dublin-born enforcer didn’t experience the same success internationally. Although he won an eye-catching 59 appearances, his success – or evident lack thereof – was largely thanks to his country not being much of a footballing force. His international career spanned 20 years.
14
Liam Brady
Republic of Ireland
A famous alumnus of Arsenal’s celebrated Arsenal academy ranks, Liam Brady was destined to have a brilliant international career from word go – and that became the truth with the Republic of Ireland international picking up 72 caps and a total of nine goals in that time. Despite his talent, he was never able to appear at a major international competition.
10 Greatest Arsenal Academy Players in Football History [Ranked]
From Ashley Cole to Bukayo Saka, here are 10 of Arsenal’s greatest academy products.
Ahead of The Boys in Green’s qualifying campaign for Italia ’90, Brady announced that he would be ending his 16-year career on the international stage. After Jack Charlton-managed Ireland clinched a spot at the international showpiece, Brady changed his mind – but the management refused to pick him as he didn’t play his part in qualifying.
13
David Ginola
France
Utterly gifted and able to weave in and out of opponents with relative ease, David Ginola turned out for the likes of Paris Saint-Germain, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United throughout his career – but that resulted in a mere 17 caps. The Frenchman scored three goals on the international stage, and he never got to taste World Cup action.
The reason why Ginola was seldom utilised by France is because of an overzealous cross which led to a Bulgarian counter-attack. That goal cost Les Bleus a place at the 1994 World Cup and manager Gerard Houllier called him the “assassin of the team”; the winger was highly criticised for said action and Houllier’s successor, Aime Jacquet, also didn’t fancy the wide man.
12
Bernd Schuster
West Germany
Having played for both Barcelona and Real Madrid throughout his career, there are no doubts over Bernd Schuster’s talent, nor his influence on West Germany’s international proceedings. A three-time Spanish top flight champion at club level, the attacking midfielder won 21 caps for his country – but his venture concluded before playing at a World Cup.
The 1982 version of the tournament was missed by Schuster through an injury, and then he retired two years later after falling out with the likes of West Germany boss Jupp Derwall and teammate Paul Breitner. The premature end to his international career, he claims, was thanks to Barca being difficult about him leaving mid-season to represent his country.
11
Abedi Pele
Ghana
Abedi Pele – no, not the three-time World Cup winner for Brazil – would have lit up the international showpiece like his namesake if he had the chance. He didn’t, however, and therefore earns himself a place on this star-studded list. The 73-cap international, whose international career spanned between 1982 and 1998, scored 33 goals for Ghana.
Despite playing for the Black Stars across a 16-year period, the effortlessly brilliant midfielder – the African Footballer of the Year three times – did manage to hold the 1982 African Cup of Nations aloft with his nation, but Pele was never afforded the chance to showcase his talent on the World Cup stage before the Marseille legend retired in 2000.
10
Duncan Edwards
England
Among the top players who have never played a single World Cup match, there are many whose presence in this ranking would be legitimate. Perhaps even more so than Duncan Edwards. After all, the former Manchester United player has never really been able to show the world the full extent of his talent. Or at least, he never really had the opportunity.
The victim of the infamous Munich Air Disaster, the young midfielder disappeared before he even had the chance to shine on the biggest stage on the planet. Make no mistake about it, the five years he had just spent with the Red Devils would certainly have ensured him a place in Walter Winterbottom’s squad.
9
Ian Rush
Wales
To talk about Ian Rush is quite simply to talk about the highest scoring Liverpool player in history. And that’s all there is to it. A cold-blooded finisher, a predator of the box, who tormented defences in England and Italy – he played for Juventus from 1986 to 1988 – between the 80s and 90s, but never had the opportunity to express himself in the greatest of competitions.
One of his biggest regrets, as he himself has already said. Wales, whose only appearance at a World Cup dates back to 1958 and who had not qualified for an international competition since Euro 1976, were far too inconsistent. That doesn’t prevent him from being one of the greatest to ever do it for the Red Dragons.
8
Eric Cantona
France
Rarely in the history of football has a player’s career been so closely aligned with his personality. Eric Cantona‘s career is a perfect example. A gifted player, considered by many to be the best Premier League footballer of the 90s, he was as much known for the adoration he received across the Channel as for his proud character and his many antics.
All of which led to some notorious problems and certainly cost him a better adventure with the French national team. Not to mention the fact that he was part of a generation in search of a new identity, orphaned by Michel Platini and not yet guided by Zinedine Zidane. But Cantona’s career was what it was, and that’s another reason why his name remains so respected today.
7
Gunnar Nordahl
Sweden
Sweden may not be considered one of the world’s great footballing nations today, but it has nevertheless produced some immense players. Gunnar Nordahl is certainly one of the greatest. Yet the former striker, who is incidentally AC Milan’s all-time top scorer, was never able to take part in the World Cup.
15 Greatest Swedish Players in Football History [Ranked]
From those who featured in the George Raynor years of the 40s & 50s to the crowning of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Sweden’s top footballers have been ranked.
In fact, it was because he had decided to join the Italian club that he had to give up his national team, which at the time did not allow professional players from outside Sweden to wear its colours. A heavy price to pay for a player who nevertheless scored 33 goals in 43 appearances.
6
Ryan Giggs
Wales
Like Rush, Ryan Giggs never managed to qualify Wales for a World Cup finals. And this despite a more than positive personal record with the Dragons, who pulled on the famous red jersey 64 times (12 goals). But the step was too high for the British, and even a potential late-career move would not have allowed the winger to fill one of the only missing lines on his never-ending list of honours.
However, the fact that he did not take part in the global competition should not in any way overshadow all that the Cardiff-born winger has achieved. His status as the player with the most appearances in Manchester United’s history is just one example.

Man Utd Make New Move To Sign Bargain £25m Fulham Star
A new name has emerged as a potential midfielder target for Manchester United this summer and it may come as something of a surprise to supporters.
United are in the market for two new central midfield signings this summer, with Ederson the first man through the door in a £38million move from Atalanta, although it is yet to be confirmed. And the Red Devils have been linked with lots of other names when it comes to their second signing.
Mateus Fernandes is the one most heavily tipped to make the move, although with West Ham still demanding £80million despite their relegation to the Championship, United may be put off.
Premier League experience could be key for Manchester United
Carlos Baleba, Aurelien Tchouameni and Sandro Tonali are also still in the mix, but United could make a move to sign Sander Berge from Fulham instead.
The 28-year-old would certainly be a cheaper option than the names mentioned above, but is that what United are after?
Berge was almost an ever-present for the Whites last season, starting 34 of the club’s 38 Premier League matches and was called up to Norway’s squad for the 2026 World Cup as a result, with their first game taking place against Iraq on Tuesday night. He has a wealth of Premier League experience under his belt and could actually be a shrewd signing.
According to the Athletic, United are “running the rule” and could make a move, with Fulham likely to “want to make a profit on the £25million they paid two years ago”.

United have actually been linked with Berge in the past. The Red Devils considered making a move in 2024 when the midfielder left Burnley to sign for Fulham and there were rumours of him coming straight to Old Trafford in the Premier League at the age of 20 in the January transfer window of 2020.
Vincent Kompany is a big fan of the Fulham star
A mystery player arrived at the club’s Carrington training ground, with rumours circulating that it was the Genk star. Berge was falsely claimed to be undergoing a medical ahead of a £20million move to help bolster United’s midfield options, but it was not the case.
Berge would actually sign for Sheffield United, spending three-and-a-half years at Bramall Lane before moving on to Burnley and then latterly Fulham.
The 28-year-old has a contract at Craven Cottage until 2029, with Fulham holding a one-year option to extend that to 20230 too, meaning they hold all the cards when it comes to negotiations over a transfer fee for the Norwegian.
Both Arsenal assistant manager Albert Stuivenberg – who was Berge’s coach at Genk – and former Burnley boss Vincent Kompany described Berge as an “intelligent” footballer and he would certainly fulfil one role in the United team, being firmly a No.6.

Ilia Topuria Said 2 Words to Corner Before Retiring vs Justin Gaethje
New audio from Ilia Topuria has surfaced after his defeat at the hands of Justin Gaethje for the lightweight title at UFC Freedom 250 on Sunday night.
The showpiece event on the White House’s South Lawn to celebrate the United States’ 250th birthday saw stoppages in all seven bouts, but none more brutal or bloody than the stoppage of the previously-dominant Georgian-Spanish champion.
The champion and challenger traded blows in the first rounds, with the Matador looking well-placed in the fight. However, in the third round, American Gaethje pulled ahead, landing heavy shots that bloodied up the face of Topuria and leaving significant swelling around both eyes.
When he entered the corner after the third, discussions about his ability to see were picked up by the broadcast, which eventually resulted in the doctor being called in to assess Topuria’s ability to proceed.
After tests, the doctor could be audibly heard saying that Topuria shouldn’t continue, but he was overruled by referee Marc Goddard and the fight continued.
At the end of the fourth, however, it has since emerged that cage-side microphones heard Topuria saying to his brother in Spanish “no mas”, meaning that’s enough, and to call the fight. His brother informed referee Goddard, who then waved it off.
Topuria was then helped to leave the Octagon straight after the fight without giving an interview to commentator Joe Rogan.
Ilia Topuria’s Medical Update After UFC Freedom 250
At the post-fight press conference, Dana White said that Topuria had been taken directly to hospital for treatment, adding that he suspected the fighter had suffered a broken orbital bone. However, new reports surfaced overnight revealing he suffered no broken bones and no serious injuries.
UFC Freedom 250 Salaries For Topuria, Gaethje, Pereira, Gane
A lot of money was spent by the UFC, not just on the White House.
“Ilia’s in the hospital. He’s busted up. I’m not a doctor, but his eye looked like he probably has a broken orbital. I don’t know that. That’s not a fact. I’m just assuming,” White said.
“My plans for him are to go home and rest and recover. Take his time. Tonight was a rough night for him. I just want to make sure he’s healthy and good and not even thinking about him fighting again. I just want him to go home and relax and rest and heal.”
Elsewhere on the card, fan-favourite and face of the UFC Alex “Poatan” Pereira was knocked out by France’s Ciryl Gane in the second round of the co-main event for the interim heavyweight title.
The Brazilian came up short in his bid to become the first three-division champion and, therefore, putting any superfight with England’s Tom Aspinall on hold for the time being.

Iran ‘Forced’ to Leave the US Immediately After New Zealand Draw
Iran played their first 2026 World Cup match on American soil as they shared the points in a 2-2 draw against New Zealand on Tuesday.
The ongoing conflict between Iran and the United States of America has dominated the build-up to the competition. There was a strong chance the Middle Eastern nation would be forced to withdraw from the tournament over safety concerns.
Iran Player Speaks Out as He’s Accused of Controversial World Cup Goal Celebration
FIFA have been told to take action after the goal celebration sparked outrage
However, they have turned up and will play all three of their group matches in the US. Preparations have been disrupted as Iran have been forced to train in Mexico and commute to the States for matches. Many members of their camp have also been denied visas to enter the country.
Iran Given Clear Instructions After New Zealand Draw
Following the full-time whistle, Iran players and head coach Amir Ghalenoei were critical about the way they’ve been treated, claiming travel disruptions are causing issues.
Speaking to the press after the match, Ghalenoei revealed that he and his players had been informed they must leave the country immediately, with no time allowed for recovery. Through a translator, he said:
“They have said we have to leave immediately.
“We are really troubled by that. We don’t know why they are returning us, to be honest. It seems very strange. It seems others are doing the planning for us.”

“Our team is the most oppressed one in the whole World Cup,” the 62-year-old went on to claim. His star striker, Mehdi Taremi, added to his manager’s comments, saying: “Everything is like a disaster, actually, for us.”
An Iranian official told The Athletic that it was FIFA who ‘requested that our team return to Tijuana immediately after the match’. At 10:07 pm, just over two hours after the final whistle, the Iranian bus left SoFi Stadium as they began their journey back to Mexico.
Gianni Infantino’s Message to Iran Players
FIFA president Gianni Infantino visited the team’s dressing room after the game to deliver a message to the players. “I know what you go through, I understand,” he said. “But you are stronger than everything, and you send a strong message to the entire world.”
Footage of the Swiss boss’ speech has appeared online. After having his say, Infantino then listened as Ghalenoei explained his team’s struggles. Watch the interaction below.
Infantino is also reported to have said he’d try his best to get more of Iran’s delegation to the US for the upcoming games against Egypt and Belgium after many were denied visas.
Taremi confirmed the president’s intentions to try and help, saying: “For sure, he wants to try to help us, but it’s about other things too. You know, everyone knows. (I don’t) need to mention that, because you know where we are.”
