Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi has now addressed remarks he made about Mason Greenwood during his time at Marseille, speaking in his first interview since joining the north London club.
De Zerbi was appointed as Tottenham’s new manager towards the end of March, replacing Igor Tudor after a difficult period in charge.
A Tottenham fan group spoke out about the appointment of De Zerbi earlier this week, due to his previous comments on Greenwood.
“We believe these statements, left unchecked, will create a divide among supporters at a time when we all need to be pulling together to back the team. It is concerning that the club would put us in this position right when the team needs fans the most.”
De Zerbi on Mason Greenwood
During his first interview as Tottenham manager, De Zerbi has discussed some previous comments he made on Greenwood.
“I have never wanted to downplay the issue of violence against women, or violence against anyone more broadly. In my life, I’ve always stood up for those who are more vulnerable, more fragile. I’ve consistently fought and taken a stand to be on the side of those who are most at risk. Those of you who know me well will know that I’m not the kind of person who makes compromises to win more games or to win an extra title. I’m sorry if I offended anyone’s feeling with this subject matter – I have a daughter and I’m very sensitive to these things, and always have been. I hope that over time people will get to know me better and will understand that at that moment I didn’t mean to take a stance.”
Greenwood was a Marseille player at the time of the comments, working under De Zerbi, and the now-Tottenham manager was looking to protect one of his players.
The comments didn’t go down well with many, after the English forward was charged with attempted rape, assault, and controlling and coercive behaviour back in 2022, before the case was dropped in 2023.
