What Happened to Former Man Utd and England Player Kieran Richardson

Published

on

Summary

  • Former footballer Kieran Richardson ‘fell out of love’ with the sport before hanging up his boots aged 33.
  • Richardson, like other retired players, found success outside football with a new venture trading watches.
  • Despite leaving football behind, Richardson still enjoys watching the sport as an Arsenal fan.

Kieran Richardson left the world of professional football behind in 2017, ending his 15-year career following a brief and unremarkable spell with Cardiff City. The ex-England international now lives a completely different lifestyle after losing his passion for the beautiful game.

There are countless examples of footballers falling out of love with the sport that gave them their names. David Bentley, a midfielder from the same era as Richardson, famously retired before he turned 30 to pursue a new life as a bar owner in Marbella.

Likewise, former Chelsea winger and World Cup winner Andre Schurrle hung up his boots at the age of 29. The German went into various business ventures and has participated in several mountaineering challenges since turning his back on football.

Richardson has a similar story but has found a passion completely different to either Bentley, Schurrle or any other player to have called it quits on their football career before the standard retirement age. He now makes a fortune trading expensive watches.

Who is Kieran Richardson

He made 264 Premier League appearances

The Englishman was a versatile player who made over 200 appearances in the Premier League for clubs including Aston Villa and West Brom. The majority of his games came for Sunderland, whom he joined from Manchester United in 2007.

Having come through the youth ranks at West Ham shortly after legendary figures such as Frank Lampard and Rio Ferdinand, Richardson made the move to Old Trafford in 2001, and he spent one year in the academy before making the step up to the senior team. Having made his debut for the Red Devils in the 2002/03 season, the ex-Hammers’ prospect became a dependable member of Sir Alex Ferguson’s squad without ever really threatening to become a regular in the starting 11.

Richardson has since commented on the reasons he failed to become a success at Old Trafford despite winning the League Cup and FA Cup. In 2012, he gave an interview with the Christian Post admitting he had now dedicated his life to Jesus Christ:

“My last year in my Manchester (United) career, my football went off the rails. I was more worried about my social life than my football. I knew I wasn’t performing because I was more interested in houses and cars. I wasn’t happy. Now I have Jesus Christ in my life and I feel good in my heart.”

Following his move to Sunderland, the man who played as both a left-back and a wide midfielder cemented his place as a solid top-flight player. In fact, he remained in the Premier League until his very last season as a player, in which he made six Championship appearances for Sunderland before hanging up his boots at the end of the 2016/17 campaign.

Richardson spoke about the reason he left the sport behind, aged just 33, to The Steven Sulley Study. The now 41-year-old stated:

“I miss my team-mates, the changing room, the banter but I don’t miss the football itself, having to lace my boots and go out at 3pm. By the end of my career, it became a job, I fell out of love with it and lost that spark. I still enjoyed it but lost that love.”

Despite no longer being directly involved in the game, it’s clear that the former full-back still has some form of connection with the game. Richardson was full of praise for his Sunderland manager: “I really enjoyed working for Roy [Keane] – he got the best out of me, he’s the best pundit now. He would never ask you to do something he couldn’t do himself. Being a captain is about leading and getting the best of the team, and he was perfect at that. Everyone respected that.”

He now has more free time to enjoy football as a fan without any ties to a specific club. Richardson is a self-professed Arsenal supporter. He explained: “I watch football so much now – I didn’t watch it much as a footballer, I didn’t really care. I am an Arsenal fan, but when you play for a club, you aren’t thinking about Arsenal. Whichever club you’re at, that’s the team you are riding for.”

Richardson’s New Business

He’s found success away from the pitch

His foray into the business world has seen the ex-United ace become involved in the world of jewellery. The 41-year-old now trades in expensive watches. Richardson spoke about his new venture to Ladbrokes Fanzone.

He said, per the Manchester Evening News: “Whenever I meet someone new, I don’t even say I was a footballer anymore, I just say I sell watches for a living. If I was to meet anyone now, and they asked me who I am or what I do, I’d just say I sell high value watches around the world. Then, a lot of people will go on and check me out on Google, maybe, and they’d see my career in football, and then it goes on from there.

“The football career definitely helps, actually, because it gives people a sense of trust. I feel like my clients do really trust me, and so they should. The football background definitely helps, for sure. But, obviously, you still need to be knowledgeable about the product, and know what you’re talking about.”

He added: “I’ve never been the kind of guy to go and make a song and dance out of my retirement. I don’t really care, to be honest. I had a great career, I enjoyed it, but I’ve moved onto other things now. When I was a kid, I had hobbies, right? Football was always my number one, but my second was watches.

“I always loved watches. My father was into watches, I was into watches, and throughout my career I’d always be buying – and learning about – new watches. I just happen to have left one hobby, and gone into another one, that’s how I see it. I still feel like I’m living the same life. It’s crazy.

“I’m really, really blessed to be in a position where I don’t call my work, my work. Even when I was a footballer, it never felt like work to me, it was something that I loved. It’s probably why I didn’t come out and say I’d retired, because I don’t feel like I have retired. I’m still doing something that I love.”

Now a co-owner of the Broadwalk Group company, Richardson first found his passion for watches as a teenager when he bought a Cartier Tank model for the first time. He now exclusively trades Richard Milles, Patek Philippes, Audemars Piguets and Rolexes.

Man Utd in Close Contact to Sign Bournemouth Star Marcos Senesi

Manchester United are in close contact with Bournemouth defender Marcos Senesi’s agents ahead of his contract expiry in June, according to reports in Italy.

The Old Trafford side are believed to be among a host of Premier League clubs interested in the Argentina international, who helped Bournemouth secure a statement 2-1 win over Arsenal on Saturday.

Senesi is likely to become the next major name to leave Bournemouth this summer, following Antoine Semenyo’s move to Manchester City in January for £64m.

The Cherries parted ways with defenders Milos Kerkez, Dean Huijsen and Ilia Zabarnyi before the season, raking in a total of £147m in transfer fees.

Marcos Senesi

According to Italian journalist Matteo Moretto, Senesi is nearing a decision over his future amid an impressive campaign at Bournemouth and is expected to choose his next club soon.

The Argentina international’s agents are reportedly in ‘close contact’ with Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester United, with other potential suitors seen as outsiders in the transfer race at present.

Senesi joined Bournemouth from Feyenoord in the summer of 2022 and has been an important player for the Cherries since, registering 122 appearances in all competitions and scoring six goals.

Andoni Iraola’s side have been in impressive form lately, avoiding defeat in their last 12 Premier League games, including wins over Tottenham, Liverpool and Arsenal during that run.

Manchester United have not ruled out adding to their centre-back options ahead of a potential return to the Champions League next season.

The Red Devils have been without injured Matthijs de Ligt since November, while Lisandro Martínez has also struggled with a calf setback recently.

United have extended Harry Maguire’s contract this week, tying the 33-year-old to a new agreement until June 2027, with an option for a further year.

Midfield Remains Priority for Man Utd

After spending almost £200m on reinforcements up front, United are expected to prioritise signings in midfield this summer.

The Old Trafford side are preparing for Casemiro’s departure at the end of his contract in June and are eyeing Premier League-proven players as potential successors.

Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson and Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali are both on the shortlist, as is West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes, seen as a potentially cost-effective option.

Manuel Ugarte’s exit could prompt United to bring in two new faces in the middle of the park, with the Uruguayan attracting interest from Italian clubs ahead of the summer.

Li Haotong Could Withdraw Due to Sickness

A top golfer may have to face an early withdrawal from The Masters due to illness. Reports say he struggled to leave the bathroom on Friday morning after feeling ‘weak and fuzzy.’

The golfer managed to complete 18 holes in round two despite warning reporters that he considered exiting the tournament as he’d been “living in the toilet.”

“I didn’t hit many balls on the driving range. I was feeling really bad. No energy, fuzzy, want to throw up something,” he said.

Even though he felt sick, he still rolled in a nine-foot putt on the 13th hole and hit a 150-yard approach to within inches on the 14th. The best part was his Houdini moment on 15. After missing the green, he made an amazing recovery through the trees to save a birdie.

The Masters

Appearing in The Masters for the first time since 2019, and after several years struggling for form, Li Haotong has earned his way back via a stellar T4 finish at the 2025 Open Championship at Royal Portrush.

The Chinese golfer has shown an awful lot of resilience. For someone who has fought so hard to return to Augusta, quitting due to a stomach bug would be a last resort scenario.

While the likes of Scottie Scheffler, Jon Rahm, and Bryson DeChambeau came into the prestigious tournament as favourites, the world No.84 is considered to be a dark horse if his current form is anything to go by.

Li sits at 4-under-par (T7) heading into Saturday, trailing leader Rory McIlroy by eight strokes. He is scheduled to tee off at 6:06pm British time, alongside Kristoffer Reitan. The Norwegian debutante is also sitting at 4-under-par, setting up a fascinating ‘underdog’ duo as they chase down the lead held by McIlroy.

What Li Haotong Has Said About His Masters So Far

Li Haotong

Li Haotong is known as the first Chinese golfer to break into the top 50 of the official World Golf Ranking when he peaked at 32 in January 2018.

“I think the best moment was the 15th hole, the par-5,” the unlikely contender said. “I got the wind wrong. It was a super tough chip over there and I got something, like, incredibly up and down.”

He then completed the run by narrowly missing a hole-in-one on the par-three 16th.

“Especially after those four birdies, somehow I felt quite nice. The Major makes me feel good,” he joked after.

Cole Palmer Named His Greatest English Player in Football History

Published

on

By

Cole Palmer’s meteoric rise has been a sight to behold, and he’s followed in the footsteps of several past and present stars in the English game by firing on all cylinders for Chelsea and the England national team. Manchester City‘s decision to sell the exciting young attacker for an initial £40 million in the summer of 2023 looks more ridiculous each time he puts in a Man of the Match performance.

The 23-year-old has been a revelation ever since arriving at Stamford Bridge, becoming the Blues’ talisman and getting fans off their feet with stunning displays. This includes a Man of the Match outing in the Club World Cup final, in which he bagged a brace and an assist in the 3-0 triumph. He’s also been making waves on the international scene, managing to score for England in their Euro 2024 final loss to Spain.

Palmer is ascending towards the top of English football, but he has a long way to go in catching the legendary forward, whom he claims is the best English talent to grace the sport.

Palmer in No Doubt About England’s Best-Ever Player

Palmer participated in a Q&A with GOAL regarding his opinion on several footballing topics, including who is the best English player in history, and the Chelsea star responded:

Wayne Rooney lit up English football during a trophy-laden career which saw him fire Manchester United to five Premier League titles, earning a reputation as, quite possibly, the greatest British player in English top-flight history. The ex-England captain became the Red Devils’ all-time top scorer with 253 goals in 559 games and was just as prolific on international duty, with 53 goals in 120 caps.

The legendary striker was named the FA’s England Player of the Year on four occasions, an honour Palmer picked up last year for his extraordinary exploits for club and country, and he’s made it no secret he grew up supporting United and idolised Rooney (via Sky Sports):

“When I go back to the stadium (Old Trafford) it’s good because obviously, I used to go and watch matches there. Rooney (was my icon). I supported United and he was the best player.”

Rooney failed to win a major tournament with England, and that’s sometimes used against him in discussions over English football’s all-time greats. But his growth from a teenage prospect at Everton into a worldwide superstar at United was extraordinary to watch unfold, and it holds similarities to Palmer’s development in the spotlight of world football.
