Tambuwal accuses Tinubu of undermining opposition parties
Former Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of attempting to weaken opposition parties ahead of future elections.
He spoke to journalists on Saturday night after the African Democratic Congress (ADC) held its state congress in Sokoto.
Tambuwal claimed the president is working to ensure opposition parties remain unstable. According to him, internal crises in rival parties are being deliberately encouraged to benefit the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
He warned that Nigeria could be drifting towards one-party dominance by design, drawing comparisons with the era of former military ruler Sani Abacha, when political parties rallied behind a single candidate.
Tambuwal also alleged that the government has interfered in opposition parties such as the Labour Party and the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in a bid to weaken them.
“This is reminiscent of the era when all political parties aligned behind a single candidate,” he said, warning that such a trend could damage Nigeria’s democracy.
The former Speaker of the House of Representatives also criticised the current administration’s handling of the economy and security, citing rising poverty, unemployment, and insecurity.
However, he expressed confidence in the ADC, describing it as a credible alternative capable of rescuing Nigeria from misrule.
“ADC remains committed to rebuilding the country. Our priority will be security, economic recovery, job creation, and investments in education and agriculture, as well as ensuring stable power supply,” he said.
Tambuwal added that his party supports a multi-party system and stressed that it must be protected at all costs.
He also commended party members for turning out in large numbers and for maintaining peace during the state congress.

2027: Odii remains Ebonyi PDP governorship candidate – Idika
A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and factional National Ex-Officio member of the party, Mazi Moses Idika, has dismissed calls for the party’s 2027 governorship candidate in Ebonyi State, Chief Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii, to step down on the grounds of zoning, insisting that the businessman and philanthropist remains firmly in the race.
Idika argued that the governorship position in Ebonyi State has historically been contested by candidates from different senatorial districts and that no constitutional provision prevents any qualified citizen from seeking the office.
According to him, elections conducted in the state since 1999 have featured candidates from across Ebonyi North, Central and South senatorial districts, regardless of political arrangements or zoning considerations.
He maintained that Chief Odii’s ambition is legitimate and should be determined by the electorate through the ballot box rather than by what he described as an “imaginary zoning system.”
Idika further challenged supporters of Governor Francis Nwifuru’s re-election bid to highlight the administration’s achievements rather than focus on succession politics.
He also accused the state government of failing to address critical developmental challenges facing the state, while expressing confidence that Odii would offer an alternative vision centred on investment, industrialisation and economic growth.
The PDP stalwart described Odii as a patriotic leader committed to improving the welfare of Ebonyi people and opening the state to greater economic opportunities.
“Chief Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii will contest, he will win, and Ebonyi people will be happy again,” Idika stated.
He urged Ebonyi residents to decide the state’s next governor through democratic means during the 2027 governorship election.
The statement comes amid growing political activities and realignments among political parties in Ebonyi State ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Labour Party affirms Ishaku Abbo as Adamawa guber candidate
The Labour Party, LP, has affirmed a former senator, Ishaku Abbo, as its governorship candidate for the 2027 general elections in Adamawa.
The party also unveiled candidates for the three senatorial districts, eight House of Representatives seats and 25 House of Assembly constituencies in Adamawa.
The affirmation took place during the party’s primary election and candidate affirmation exercise on Sunday, in Yola.
Mr Sam Ochiama, Chairman of the Labour Party Primary Election Committee, said the exercise complied with the Electoral Act and the party’s constitution.
Ochiama said candidates who emerged unopposed were affirmed through voice votes by delegates and party stakeholders.
He announced Mr Emmanuel Musa as the party’s candidate for Adamawa Central Senatorial District.
According to him, Musa was the sole aspirant for the position and received overwhelming support during the affirmation process.
Ochiama also declared Mr Peter Fwa as the party’s candidate for Adamawa South Senatorial District and Mr Dawuda Mohammed as the party’s candidate for Adamawa North Senatorial District.
The committee chairman also unveiled the party’s candidates for the eight House of Representatives seats.
He similarly announced the 25 candidates selected to contest seats in the Adamawa House of Assembly.
He expressed optimism that the Labour Party would mount a strong challenge in the 2027 elections and urged members to remain united and strengthen grassroots mobilisation ahead of the polls.
He stressed the need for cooperation among party faithful to ensure success at all levels of the election.

Atiku, Hayatu-Deen hold closed-door reconciliation meeting after ADC primary tension

LAGOS — Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, on Sunday held a closed-door meeting with his former rival, Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, at his residence in Lagos as part of ongoing reconciliation efforts within the party.
Sources according to Channelstv, said the meeting is connected to attempts to unite aggrieved aspirants following the party’s recently concluded presidential primary ahead of the 2027 general election.
Hayatu-Deen is expected to address journalists after the meeting.
The engagement comes days after the ADC presidential primary in which Atiku emerged as the party’s flag bearer. Hayatu-Deen and former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, were also contenders in the race.
However, Hayatu-Deen had withdrawn from the contest before the official announcement of results, alleging widespread irregularities and vote manipulation.
In a statement at the time, he expressed concern over reports of electoral malpractice across the country, saying he had personally observed some of the incidents.
“I will not be attending the announcement of the ADC Presidential Election Results today. I am concerned by reports from across the country of widespread vote rigging, some of which I myself observed, and will therefore be taking advice on my next steps,” he had said.
Despite his withdrawal, the party proceeded with the announcement of results, declaring Atiku winner with 1,846,370 votes. Amaechi came second with 504,117 votes, while Hayatu-Deen polled 177,120 votes.
Amaechi also rejected the outcome, describing the exercise as “concocted” and alleging widespread disenfranchisement during the primary.
Since clinching the ticket, Atiku has intensified reconciliation efforts within the party, including previous engagements with Amaechi aimed at mending internal divisions.
Following that earlier meeting, Atiku said discussions centred on the country’s economic challenges, insecurity, and the need for patriotic collaboration to address national decline.
Meanwhile, ADC National Chairman, Senator David Mark, has defended the conduct of the primary, describing it as largely free and fair, though not without minor challenges.
He noted that while all aspirants were qualified to lead the party, only one candidate could emerge as flag bearer.
Atiku and Amaechi joined the ADC in July 2025 alongside other opposition figures as part of a broader political realignment aimed at challenging President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general election.
