Every Night One Match Ranked From Worst to Best

Published

on

After months of anticipation, WWE WrestleMania 42 got underway on Saturday night at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

A crowd of over 50,000 fans were in attendance to witness seven matches, all with various stakes on the line. As can sometimes be the case with WWE Premium Live Events, the card was a bit of a mixed bag. The matches on offer ranged from spectacular to frustrating, with a couple of title changes, a shocking return, and a show where the best matches came nowhere near the top of the card.

Here’s every match from night one in Sin City, ranked from worst to best.

7

Becky Lynch Defeated AJ Lee

Women’s Intercontinental Championship

AJ Lee vs Becky Lynch

This one never really got out of second gear. Lynch spent much of the opening stages looking flustered as Lee got the better of her and played mind games, but even as the match progressed and Lynch found some momentum, things remained oddly sluggish. There was no shortage of moves being hit, but very little sense of rhythm, and the crowd found themselves more invested in the increasingly tetchy exchanges between Lynch and referee Jessika Carr than in the contest itself.

The finish arrived abruptly and felt rushed, with Lynch dragging the referee into harm’s way before dumping Lee into the turnbuckle and connecting with the Manhandle Slam. Their bout at Elimination Chamber was much better, but that was hardly a hair raiser either.

6

Cody Rhodes Defeated Randy Orton

Undisputed WWE Championship

Randy Orton Punts Cody Rhodes

Pat McAfee attacked Rhodes with a microphone before the bell and took a Cross Rhodes for his trouble, before the elbow of Jelly Roll put him through the announce table. What followed was a slow opening stretch in which had no pace about it whatsoever.

Things improved later in the match when the pair started trading finishers, but the referee bump, the eye poke, the low blow, McAfee running back to the ring in a neck brace and a referee shirt before Orton surprisingly RKO’d him, and Rhodes capitalising to retain the title all made for one of the strangest finishes for a WrestleMania main event, and one the crowd never got into.

The post-match angle where Orton injured Rhodes suggests their story will continue. However, fans will be hoping for an improved in-ring outing during their next encounter.

5

The Usos and LA Knight Defeated Logan Paul, Austin Theory and IShowSpeed

Six-man tag team match

A fun opener that ultimately left you wanting more. IShowSpeed was genuinely impressive though, showing real personality and surprising athleticism for someone with no professional wrestling background. Before the match could really find its stride, Speed accidentally knocked Knight into Paul, Theory took the BFT, and it was over. The whole thing felt like it needed a lot more planning and setting up, which given the names involved was a real shame. Speed’s splash on Paul through the announce table was by far the highlight of the whole thing, but nothing that came before carried that level of shock or excitement.

4

Liv Morgan Defeated Stephanie Vaquer

Women’s World Championship

Liv Morgan vs Stephanie Vaquer

Full of energy and executed cleanly but let down badly by its length. Vaquer and Morgan had good chemistry from the off, brawling and trading fast-paced sequences that were all performed well. The problem was that the match was over before it had any real chance to breathe. The Judgment Day arrived to tip the scales, Vaquer impressively fought off Roxanne Perez and Raquel Rodriguez initially, but it all proved too much as Morgan hit the Oblivion to win the title. A perfectly good match, but it all came about far too quickly.

3

Paige and Brie Bella Defeated The Irresistible Forces, Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss, and Bayley and Lyra Valkyria

Women’s Tag Team Championship

This match will be remembered almost entirely for one thing: Paige’s return. With Nikki Bella ruled out through injury, her replacement sent the crowd into absolute raptures. Paige was so good, it looked as though she’d never left, and her showdown with Charlotte Flair was one of the highlights of the entire night. Brie Bella put in a solid shift, and while the match itself got a little messy in places, it built up nicely to Paige tagging in and finishing things off with the Rampage on Bliss. It wasn’t a technical masterpiece by any stretch, but a genuinely wonderful WrestleMania moment and a solid match to go with it.

2

Jacob Fatu Defeated Drew McIntyre

Unsanctioned Match

Drew McIntyre vs Jacob Fatu

Fatu refused to even wait for McIntyre to get to the ring, taking him out with a suicide dive during his entrance. What followed was a hateful, physical brawl packed with more than the usual improvised weapons. It felt authentically personal throughout. There were some genuinely brilliant moments woven in, including a callback to McIntyre’s traumatic Hell in a Cell encounter with CM Punk involving a toolbox, back and forth finishers, and a stunning moonsault through a table to give Fatu a massive WrestleMania victory. If anything, the match felt slightly tamer than the Unsanctioned billing suggested, but very entertaining, nonetheless.

1

Gunther Defeated Seth Rollins

Grudge Match

Gunther vs Seth Rollins

The match of the night. Gunther jumped Rollins before the bell, and from that moment the intensity didn’t fade. The two men wrestled as though they’d despised each other for years, blending gritty brawling with beautiful sequences and near-falls that had the crowd completely captivated. The longer it went on, the louder the arena got, and Rollins’ Pedigree and Curb Stomp on the announce table threatened to bring the house down. Fans were left with somewhat of an underwhelming finish though, with the returning Bron Breakker spearing Rollins at ringside to leave him vulnerable, and Gunther locking in the sleeper to put him away. For a WrestleMania match, it felt like an unsatisfying way to end something so good, but everything that preceded it was quite outstanding.

Night two of WrestleMania 42 takes place on Sunday with six matches currently slated for the card. The line-up includes the much-hyped collision between Oba Femi and Brock Lesnar, together with a number of championship matches.

This year’s ‘Mania will close with a showdown between CM Punk and Roman Reigns for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. Both men will have their eyes on stealing the show and delivering the best match of the weekend. It remains to be seen if they will do so.

John Terry Names England’s 4 ‘World-Class’ Players at the World Cup

Published

By

John Terry has never been shy about sharing his opinions, and his verdict on England’s World Cup squad was vintage Terry. Blunt, confident, and guaranteed to get people talking.

The Champions League winner has shared his thoughts on numerous occasions on a range of topics. He’s been outspoken on how he doesn’t even think Lionel Messi is the greatest Argentine player ever, let alone the best footballer ever, and during Enzo Maresca’s short-lived reign at his beloved Chelsea, he criticised the Italian’s tactics and his habits surrounding squad rotation.

Speaking on Piers Morgan Uncensored alongside Simon Jordan, the former Chelsea captain made a bold claim: That only four England players are truly world-class. It’s a take that’s sure to get the conversation going among fans of the Three Lions.

The Four England Players John Terry Trusts

The quartet Terry did single out represents the spine of what England should be built around this summer. Jude Bellingham has been described as a generational talent who hadn’t even turned 20 before he became one of the best midfielders in the world. Declan Rice has developed into exactly that too, a commanding box-to-box force whose influence over Arsenal’s Premier League title win and Champions League final run has been nothing short of impeccable.

Would the former Three Lions skipper make a combined XI?

Reece James, when fit, offers a level of quality at right-back that few nations in the World Cup can match, often working in an inverted role and getting involved with the attack in a way that few players can do, whilst displaying strength and discipline when called on defensively.

And Harry Kane, for all the noise around England’s system and how they’re predicted to set up, remains one of the most lethal finishers England has ever produced. Terry described his importance when responding to Morgan’s question over how reliant the Three Lions are on the Bayern Munich man:

“If he gets injured we are in trouble, regardless of his goals, he’s a big presence and the captain of our side.”

“I think we have the best striker in the World Cup, and I firmly believe he’ll be the top scorer in the World Cup”

Watch the discussion about England’s world-class four (12:40 onwards):

John Terry Doesn’t Consider Bukayo Saka “World Class”

The elephant in the room, though, is Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka. When pressed by both Morgan and Jordan on why Saka didn’t make his world-class cut, Terry’s reasoning came down to his end-of-season output, suggesting the winger didn’t quite hit the levels expected of someone in that bracket, whilst at least acknowledging his injury struggles. It was a reserved critique rather than a dismissal, but a critique nonetheless.

2026 World Cup Simulated in Full – England Go Far

The results of all 104 matches this summer have been simulated – and a fascinating tournament has been predicted.

What made it more nuanced was what followed. Morgan put it to Terry that when Saka is at his best, he’s as good as anyone in his position in the world. Terry agreed, but only went as far as “potentially.” Not a no, but far from a yes. It suggested Terry sees Saka as a player on the cusp of that level rather than one who’s firmly established himself there.

Whether or not the world-class label strictly applies is, in some ways, beside the point. What Terry’s comments do is frame exactly where the bar sits, and for Saka, the 2026 World Cup may well be his chance to clear it.

Diego Maradona’s Slammed FIFA President Gianni Infantino in 2019

Published

on

By

So much of the 2026 World Cup story so far has unfortunately been about Gianni Infantino. The FIFA president has spent the entire build-up playing sycophant to United States President Donald Trump, even though Canada and Mexico are also co-hosts for the tournament.

Despite that, he’s been unable or unwilling to get Trump to soften his intensive border control restrictions and open up the door for all those – players, fans, staff, and officials – connected to World Cup nations to enter the US. One of many examples saw Somali referee Omar Artan turned away upon arriving in Miami, despite having a visa to come into the country.

In response to the criticism, the ever-unpopular Infantino did not help his cause when he told the journalist to ‘chill, relax.’ The Swiss-born 56-year-old has been FIFA president since 2016 and has long had his detractors, with one of those being football legend Diego Maradona.

Diego Maradona Quit FIFA Legends Role After Dispute With Gianni Infantino

Maradona

Maradona is best remembered for his iconic performances at the 1986 World Cup, as he led Argentina to glory in Mexico. His two league titles in Italy with Napoli, as well as trophy-winning spells with Barcelona and Boca Juniors, helped cement his place as one of the greatest players in football history.

Having such a high status within the sport, Maradona was part of the FIFA Legends team. However, in 2019, the Argentine great quit his role on the programme, blaming mistreatment from Infantino.

Indeed, the former Napoli man – who passed away in 2020 at the age of 60 – spoke with great anger about the FIFA president. He claimed he was treated like a ‘dog’ and consequently resigned on the spot:

“They put us [in a hotel room] with (former Dutch player, Marco) van Basten and another player. And they treated us as if we were little dogs that only needed to be fed and that’s it. A total lack of respect.

“That’s why I resigned. And now, I will start revealing what I know about this new FIFA.”

Maradona then took aim at FIFA’s deputy general secretary Zvonimir Boban (who resigned later that year for unrelated reasons), challenging him to a fight. The Argentine was unhappy after an alleged misunderstanding between himself and Boban at the hotel where members of the FIFA Legends programme were staying.

Maradona slammed Infantino for sending Boban to deal with the issue, saying: “I would like to say to Boban that if he wants to look good, let’s go to a (boxing) ring. He shouldn’t have come to the hotel and got angry.

“The worst part is that Boban was sent by someone. And this someone is Infantino. I am not a 20-year-old kid, I am 58. It hurts me because I believed in these people. Now I don’t believe them anymore.”

Maradona Felt Infantino Was Just as Bad For FIFA as Sepp Blatter

FIFA president Gianni Infantino
FIFA president Gianni Infantino

At the time, 2019, Infantino had been in charge of FIFA for three years. The administrator had taken over from former president Sepp Blatter in 2016, who departed amid controversy. Indeed, Blatter had been banned from football for six years in 2015 by the world governing body’s own ethics committee for approving a £1.3m payment to UEFA president Michel Platini in 2011.

The ruling also meant that Platini withdrew from the race to become FIFA president, allowing Infantino to take the crown. Fast-forward to 2026, and a recent criminal complaint has now been made against the currrent FIFA boss, in which it’s claimed that Infantino and others “worked to exclude [Platini] from the race for the presidency of FIFA”.

Amid these allegations of shady behaviour, it’s eye-opening to see Maradona’s remarks about

Infantino at the time. Perhaps most notably, in 2019, he claimed that FIFA had not ‘changed a bit’ since the departure of Blatter and the arrival of Infantino:

“I sent a letter to Infantino in which I resigned from (the post of) being captain of (FIFA) legends. Since Blatter and [former Argentina Football Association president, Julio] Grondona left, FIFA hasn’t changed a bit. No change.”

A decade into Infantino’s presidency, some would argue not only have things not got better since the days of Blatter, but they’ve got even worse. World Cup games, for example, have become essentially unaffordable for the average fan. Indeed, a category one ticket for the final cost about $1000 in Qatar 2022, but will now set supporters back over $6000 in 2026.

Josh Hokit Weighs In ‘Drunk’ For UFC White House Fight

Published

All seven fights on the landmark UFC Freedom 250 card that will be staged on the grounds of the White House on Sunday night are now official.

Each of the 14 fighters on the card made their contracted weights at Saturday afternoon’s official weigh-ins, but one man stole the show in bizarre fashion before he stepped on to the scales.

UFC Freedom 250 was commissioned by the UFC to celebrate both the 250th anniversary of the USA and the 80th birthday of President Donald Trump. In a company first, the Octagon will be set up outdoors, as all the action will take place in a makeshift 4,300-seater arena on the South Lawn of the White House.

The card will be headlined by a pair of title contests. In the evening’s main event, Ilia Topuria will clash with Justin Gaethje for the undisputed UFC Lightweight Championship. At Saturday’s weigh-in, both men came in at the 155lbs required to make the bout official.

The co-main event sees the interim UFC Heavyweight Championship on the line as Brazilian legend Alex Pereira steps up to heavyweight to face Ciryl Gane.

Despite his move from light heavyweight, Pereira (251lbs) came in heavier than Gane (248lbs). The winner will meet full heavyweight champion, Tom Aspinall, in a unification bout in their next bout.

Both championship contests were made official without much in the way of drama. The same can’t be said for Josh Hokit’s weigh-in for his White House showdown with Derrick Lewis.

The undefeated Hokit has quickly made a reputation for his antics outside of the Octagon. The 9-0 American stayed true to form as he made his way to the scales on Saturday.

Hokit turned up to the weigh-in almost naked as he swayed back and forth, while claiming to be scared of Lewis, who holds the record for the most knockouts in UFC history.

UFC Fighter Weighs In ‘Drunk’ For White House Bout

Appearing to be ‘drunk’, the former American football player told media members in attendance:

“So what, maybe I was drinking last night. Who wouldn’t be? I have a giant black man that wants to knock me out. He has the most knockouts in UFC history… What are you guys looking at?”

In the middle of his statement, Hokit even seemed to throw up on himself. The 28-year-old had to be urged to stand still as he climbed on to the scales.

Eventually he did so, weighing in at 231lbs, making Sunday’s contest against Lewis (265 lbs) official.

In his three fights to date as a UFC fighter, Hokit has become known for his outlandish behaviour and there’s every chance that his newly-adopted downtrodden persona is simply a mind game heading into the biggest bout of his career.

Despite delivering one of the more unusual weigh-ins in UFC history, the fight is now official and Hokit will be intent on producing an eye-catching performance on Sunday night.
