Former PGMOL chief Keith Hackett has delivered a strong verdict on Crystal Palace’s freak goal during their 3-1 defeat to Liverpool on Saturday afternoon. In the end, Daniel Munoz’s consolation strike counted for little as the Premier League champions moved up to fourth in the table following a comfortable victory.
Alexander Isak opened the scoring before Andrew Robertson doubled Liverpool’s lead after a scintillating counterattack in the first half. After the break, an incident that left Reds boss Arne Slot furious with referee Andy Madley briefly threatened to throw the hosts off course as they chased a first win over Palace this season at the fourth attempt. However, Florian Wirtz restored control with a brilliant third goal that cannoned in off the post.
The result means Liverpool have finally found a bit of momentum, with a third consecutive victory all but securing their place in next season’s Champions League. But the performance was not without controversy, and Hackett has raised concerns over the referee’s decision not to stop play after goalkeeper Freddie Woodman went down injured in the build-up to Palace’s only goal.

Hackett Casts Strong Verdict on Munoz’s Freak Goal vs Liverpool
The controversy surrounding Palace’s goal centres on the bizarre fact that Woodman – third in charge behind Alisson and Giorgi Mamardashvili – was down injured before Munoz paused, assessed his next move, and calmly lifted the ball into the back of the net with understandable ease.
There has long been debate over how much protection goalkeepers should receive, and Hackett believes this was a clear example of a goal that should not have stood. He said (watch below):
“The Liverpool goalkeeper went to ground, clearly injured, and attracting the referee’s attention is the point when Andy Madley should have stopped the game. Controversially, he allowed play to continue. This is frankly unacceptable.”
