PDP defends Makinde over ‘Wetie’ comment, accuses APC of political intimidation
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused President Bola Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress (APC), and key national institutions of being responsible for rising political tension and any potential violence ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, on Sunday, the opposition party defended Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde over his recent remarks at the National Summit of Opposition Political Parties held in Ibadan, insisting that his reference to the historic “wetie” violence was not a threat but a warning against political repression.
The APC and the Federal Government had criticised Makinde’s comments, describing his recollection of the violent political crisis in the old Western Region as a call to violence.
However, the PDP said the governor merely used history to caution the ruling party and national institutions about the consequences of suppressing opposition voices.
“The use of history in the way and manner done by Governor Makinde in the said speech served as a caution and advisory to the Federal Government, the APC, and other national institutions, of the unmitigated crisis that their actions and inactions can result in,” the statement said.
The party added that “only a guilty aggressor can interpret it to mean a threat or call to violence,” stressing that those who fail to learn from history are often doomed by it.
According to the PDP, Makinde’s remarks were a reminder that when political greed replaces patriotism and good governance, and public frustration continues to build, the outcome could be severe.
“Governor Makinde offered a sobering reminder that when insatiable political greed and avarice replace patriotism and good governance… the resultant conflagration will be of immeasurable proportion,” it stated.
The opposition party further alleged that the APC was creating conditions similar to those that led to the “wetie” crisis, accusing the ruling party of pursuing what it described as “elected totalitarianism.”
It also recalled statements made by APC figures while in opposition, including what it described as the “baboon and blood narrative,” arguing that the ruling party lacked the moral authority to accuse others of inciting violence.
“When the APC was in opposition, they did not merely threaten violence, they openly promised to make the country ungovernable,” the PDP said.
The party warned that it would continue to resist what it called attempts to establish a one-party state, adding that opposition parties would adopt stronger legal and democratic measures to protect Nigeria’s democracy.
It concluded by saying responsibility for any violence before or after the 2027 elections would rest with the Federal Government, APC, INEC, and other institutions responsible for safeguarding democratic processes.

Ekiti Guber Poll: Police, INEC assure of secure distribution of election materials
Ekiti Governorship Poll: Police, INEC assure Safe Distribution of Election Materials, Adequate Security
The police and the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, have assured of adequate security for election materials and personnel ahead of Saturday’s governorship election in Ekiti State.
They gave the assurance as the distribution of sensitive and non-sensitive materials commenced across the 16 local government areas.
Speaking during the movement of election materials at the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Ado Ekiti on Thursday, the Commissioner of Police in charge of election security, CP Abayomi Shogunle, said the process was being conducted in a transparent manner with the participation of key stakeholders, including political parties, civil society organisations and the media.
According to him, the materials are being sorted and distributed to all local government areas under strict security arrangements.
“The process is being coordinated by the Resident Electoral Commissioner. We have representatives of political parties, civil society organisations and the media here to ensure transparency.
“What we are witnessing is the sorting and distribution of both sensitive and non-sensitive materials to the 16 local government areas,” he said.
Shogunle disclosed that police officers had been deployed to escort the materials from the INEC office to local government headquarters, where they would be secured pending further movement to Registration Area Centres, RACs, and subsequently to polling units on election day.
He explained that security personnel would guard the materials at every stage of the distribution process to ensure they arrive safely at designated polling units before the commencement of voting on Saturday.
Addressing concerns over security in identified flashpoints, including Ilejemeje Local Government Area, the police commissioner said adequate measures had been put in place based on intelligence reports and risk assessments conducted by various stakeholders.
He noted that the election security plan was built on a multi-layered framework approved by the Inspector-General of Police, aimed at preventing any security breach during the poll.
“We have considered different inputs, including intelligence reports and risk assessments. Adequate measures have been put in place to address concerns in areas identified as flashpoints. The security framework is multi-layered, meaning several measures have been deployed to ensure the election is peaceful, free and devoid of violence,” Shogunle stated.
Earlier, the Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, for Ekiti State, Dr Bunmi Omoseyindemi expressed satisfaction with the distribution process, describing it as smooth and orderly.
“As you can see, everything is going smoothly,” the REC said.
He urged residents of the state to come out en masse on election day and vote for candidates of their choice in a peaceful atmosphere.
“Ekiti has always been peaceful, and we assure the people that we are going to conduct a free, fair, transparent and inclusive election,” he said.
Local government representatives were seen convening the materials from the distribution centre.

Peter Obi wanted Aisha Yesufu to run for Reps, but she chose Senate — NDC

The National Secretary of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Ikenna Enekweizu, has said the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, preferred that activist Aisha Yesufu contest for the AMAC/Gwari House of Representatives seat rather than the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Senate position.
Enekweizu disclosed this on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday while addressing controversies surrounding Yesufu’s participation in the party’s primaries.
According to him, discussions between Obi and the party leadership after the former Anambra State governor joined the NDC focused on building consensus around the party’s candidate for the AMAC/Gwari federal constituency seat.
“When Peter Obi joined the party, part of what we wanted to do with him was to allow him help us build consensus on who will be the candidate of the party for the AMAC/Gwari seat,” Enekweizu said.
“He told me personally that he wanted Aisha Yesufu to run for the House of Representatives seat of AMAC/Gwari. But two or three days after he said this to me, I was surprised to read on social media that Aisha is running for Senate. We didn’t discuss that.”
The NDC scribe said the party subsequently made efforts to persuade Yesufu to contest for the House of Representatives seat instead of the Senate.
According to him, the party’s national leader met with the activist on two occasions in a bid to convince her to reconsider her position.
“The national leader of the party invited Aisha Yesufu, met with her twice, appealing to her to run for the House of Representatives,” he said.
However, Enekweizu said Yesufu insisted on contesting for the Senate.
“But Aisha said she was bigger than the reps office. She said she wanted to be a senator and nothing would stop her from going to the Senate. So we allowed her to run,” he added.
The NDC secretary noted that Yesufu eventually lost the primary election and advised her to utilise the party’s internal dispute-resolution mechanisms if she had concerns about the process.
“Aisha Yesufu lost the primary election. If she feels aggrieved, a lot of people who also lost the primaries in other constituencies have been reaching out to us,” he said.
Enekweizu also dismissed claims that Yesufu was unfairly treated, noting that several supporters of Obi contested for the same position.
“She’s not the only supporter of Peter Obi that ran for AMAC/Gwari. Twenty-three aspirants bought the expression of interest and nomination form. How do we manage them all?” he asked.
His remarks came days after the NDC’s National Leader, Seriake Dickson, revealed that the party had offered Yesufu a House of Representatives ticket, but she declined in favour of pursuing a Senate seat ahead of the 2027 elections.
