‘We’re not just doing politics’ – Peter Obi on visit to Makinde

Published

By Adeola Badru

Former Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general election and a key figure in the coalition movement within the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Mr. Peter Obi, has said what they (the opposition) are doing is not just politics.

He reiterated his vision of a more united, secure and productive Nigeria.

Peter Obi spoke to newsmen on Tuesday, after a closed-door meeting with Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, in Ibadan, as opposition consultations continue to gather pace ahead of future political alignments.

Obi spent nearly two hours in a private meeting with Governor Makinde at the Oyo State Secretariat, an engagement he descibed as part of ongoing consultations focused on Nigeria’s future.

Addressing journalists, Obi explained that his visit formed part of wider discussions with key stakeholders on national issues and the need for collaboration across political lines.

He said, “We have come to consult and to continue discussions with His Excellency the Governor on issues that concern the future of our country.

“My dear brother, the governor, and I share a common belief that Nigeria must work for everyone, and that is the focus of our engagement.“

He further noted that the talks were not merely political manoeuvres but centred on building a stronger nation and fostering meaningful coalition efforts ahead of future elections.

“What we are doing is not about politics for its own sake, it is about Nigeria and how we can build a better nation for all our people.

“We are looking at a Nigeria that is united, secure and progressive, where every citizen has a fair chance to succeed based on merit and hard work, not connections,” he said.

Emphasising the importance of national development and shared purpose, Obi stressed the need to rethink priorities in order to build a country citizens can be proud of.

He said, “How do we build a better language? I’m not giving you the beat. Thank you. How we can build a better Nigeria, a Nigeria where we will all be proud to save that country.”

On inclusivity and equal opportunity, Obi highlighted his vision of a system where success is based on merit rather than personal connections.

He added, “In Nigeria, where a chance of nobody can be somebody without knowing anybody.”

… on consultations

Speaking on the expected outcome of such consultations, Obi maintained that the ultimate objective remained the progress and unity of the country.

He noted, “So, with this correlation, what should I get out of here? A better Nigeria.”

Obi outlined the need for economic transformation, particularly a shift from a consumption-driven economy to one focused on production and job creation.

He said, “And a more united, secure, progressive Nigeria, where we are going to move the country from consumption to production, and get our people employed.“

The meeting came barely 72 hours after a high-level opposition summit held in Ibadan, which brought together prominent political actors and stakeholders from across the country.

Obi’s visit also followed his recent engagement with former President Goodluck Jonathan, further signalling a series of high-level discussions linked to broader political realignments.

2027 election: People want service, not propaganda – Ogun PDP

Published

on

By

The Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of “growing anxiety” over the political influence of its candidate, Oladipupo Adebutu, ahead of the 2027 governorship election.

The party asserted that Ogun residents are ready for a new direction and that no amount of propaganda can “stop the winds of change already blowing across the state.”

This was contained in a statement issued on Sunday by the Ogun PDP Youth Leader, Comrade Lukman Ejalonibu.

Ejalonibu insisted that the recent comments by the Special Assistant on Youth Development to Ogun State Governor, Comrade Olamide Lawal, about Adebutu exposed contradictions in the ruling party’s position.

Recall that Olamide Lawal, while speaking on a television programme, said Adebutu is not a threat to the APC and lacks the political strength and performance record required to challenge the ruling party in the state.

Lawal also noted that the state’s prevailing zoning considerations diminish any prospect of Adebutu succeeding Governor Dapo Abiodun.

Responding, the PDP youth leader argued that the APC’s focus on Adebutu confirms his “growing popularity, acceptance and connection with the people of Ogun State.”

He said, “It is both amusing and contradictory that the same APC which claims Adebutu is ‘not a threat’ continues to devote so much time and energy to discussing him. No political party spends valuable airtime attacking an opponent it considers irrelevant.”

Ejalonibu also faulted attempts to downplay Adebutu’s record as a former member of the House of Representatives, citing his constituency interventions, educational support programmes, youth empowerment and community projects.

He described Adebutu as “an authentic son of Ogun State whose roots, commitment and contributions to the state are well known,” adding that his relationship with the people predates his electoral ambitions.

He asserted that the PDP’s focus remains on providing credible alternatives and mobilising the people around responsible, inclusive and people-centred governance.

The PDP Youth Leader also criticised the APC for “hiding behind zoning arguments” instead of engaging in debates on governance, unemployment, infrastructure and economic hardship.

“Democracy is a contest of ideas, competence and public trust, not excuses created out of fear. If Hon. Oladipupo Adebutu truly poses no threat to the APC, there would be no reason for the ruling party and its spokespersons to make him the centrepiece of their political conversations,” Ejalonibu added.

LG Tussle: Osun APP urges security agencies to enforce FHC judgment

Published

By

The Osun State chapter of the Action Peoples Party (APP) has called on security agencies in the state to ensure full compliance with a recent Federal High Court judgment concerning the local government crisis.

The party, in a statement by its chairman, Odesola Titus, on Sunday, also insisted that the ruling affirmed the authority of the legally elected council officials.

Odesola said the court, sitting in Osogbo, had declared the continued occupation of council offices by the APC chairmen and councillors unconstitutional.

The party, however, noted that the judgment did not invalidate the local government election conducted on February 22, 2025.

“We serve this notice to all security agencies operating within Osun State concerning the recent judgment delivered by the Federal High Court in Osogbo. The court has unequivocally declared the continuance of the Yes or No (APC) chairmen and councillors as unconstitutional,” he said.

The party stressed that the judgment underscored the need to recognise and protect the authority of the legally elected chairmen and councillors and warned against any form of illegal interference with their mandates.

“In light of this ruling, we urge all relevant security agencies to take immediate action to ensure compliance with this judgment. It is crucial to safeguard peace, law and order within our communities and to protect the mandate of those who have been duly elected by the citizens of Osun State,” he said.

The APP also called on security agencies to remain committed to preserving democratic values and maintaining stability across the state’s local government areas in line with the court’s pronouncement.

The party expressed appreciation for the cooperation of security agencies and their commitment to upholding the rule of law, adding that it expected the democratic process in Osun State to be respected and maintained.

The appeal is coming after Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, vowed that the local government council officials elected under the umbrella of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on February 22, 2025, will resume office on Monday, June 22, 2026.

The state government had conducted council polls on February 22, 2025, across the state, which were won by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidates.

Governor Ademola Adeleke had also, on February 23, 2025, sworn in the elected officials and urged them not to resume at the council secretariats in order to avoid violence.

However, the elected officials under the All Progressives Congress (APC), whose tenure expired on October 22, 2025, had approached the Federal High Court, Osogbo, seeking tenure elongation.

The court, in a judgment delivered on Monday, June 15, 2026, dismissed the application seeking tenure elongation for the chairmen and ruled that they lacked the legal standing to institute the suit.

Osun Guber: APP warns against electoral technology manipulation

Published

The Action Peoples Party, APP, in Osun State has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to strengthen the security of its technological systems ahead of the August 15 governorship election.

The party also warned against any form of manipulation that could undermine the credibility of the August 15 poll.

In a statement issued on Sunday by the Osun APP Chairman, Odesola Oluseye Titus, the party urged electoral officials to take immediate steps to secure all technology-related aspects of the electoral process against fraud and unauthorised interference.

He called for rigorous verification of the voters’ register, the proper functioning of card readers, and stronger safeguards to prevent unauthorised access to electoral data.

“We urge INEC to take immediate action to ensure that all the technological systems related to the electoral process are secured against fraudulent activities.

“This includes rigorous verification of the voters’ register, the proper functioning of card readers, and safeguarding against unauthorised access to data,” he said.

The APP demanded that the electoral body remain vigilant and proactive in addressing any technical challenges, insisting that every eligible voter must be allowed to participate freely and fairly in the election.

“We call on INEC to uphold its responsibility to the citizens and ensure that the electoral process is transparent, credible, and free from any form of technical tampering,” the statement added.

The party said it was expressing the concerns of residents of Osun State over alleged technical irregularities reported during the recent Ekiti State governorship election.

According to the APP, “Reports emerging from the Ekiti poll have raised questions about the reliability and transparency of some electoral practices, prompting calls for greater scrutiny of the technology deployed in future elections.

“The residents of Osun State have observed with increasing alarm the alleged technical irregularities that were reported during the recent Ekiti State Governorship Election.”

The party warned that the people of the state would not accept any attempt to manipulate the democratic process through technological means, stressing that the integrity of elections remains paramount.

“We want to emphasise unequivocally that the people of Osun State will not tolerate any form of technical rigging or manipulation that compromises the democratic process.

“The people of Osun State are watching closely, and we will not hesitate to mobilise against any strategies aimed at disenfranchising voters or manipulating the August 15 governorship election result,” he stated.

The APP expressed hope that INEC would provide assurances that the forthcoming governorship election would be conducted in line with the highest standards of integrity, transparency, and fairness.
