PLATEAU 2027: APC strengthens hold as support grows for Mutfwang

WITH political activities gradually gathering momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections, indications have emerged that Governor Caleb Mutfwang of the All Progressives Congress, APC, is consolidating his position in Plateau State, amid growing support from residents, political stakeholders and community leaders who point to governance performance and political realignments as factors strengthening his re-election prospects.

Across communities in Jos, Barkin Ladi, Riyom, Mangu, Shendam, Langtang North, Kanke, Kanam and Wase, many residents who spoke with Vanguard expressed optimism over the direction of governance in the state, citing ongoing infrastructure projects, improved engagement with communities and renewed political stability as reasons for backing continuity in 2027.

A Jos-based resident, Mr. Promise Yatu, said the administration had earned public goodwill through visible projects and a leadership style many citizens now identify with.

“Mutfwang has demonstrated capacity and commitment. Based on what we have seen so far, he deserves another opportunity to consolidate on these gains,” he said.

APC consolidation reshapes Plateau politics

The political equation in Plateau witnessed a dramatic shift in December 2025 when Governor Mutfwang defected from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to the ruling APC in a move widely seen as a major turning point in the state’s political history.

The defection, announced by APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, triggered fresh alignments across party structures, with several grassroots mobilisers, political office holders and stakeholders joining the ruling party.

Since then, the APC has continued to strengthen its hold across the 17 local government areas of the state, consolidating party structures and widening its political influence ahead of the next election cycle.

Political observers say the development has significantly weakened the opposition PDP, which has continued to grapple with internal divisions, leadership disagreements and defections.

A resident, Mr. Peter Jankara, said the changing political climate had altered the balance of power in the state.

“The APC has taken firm control of the political space, while the opposition is still trying to reorganise itself after the recent developments,” he said.

Another resident, Mr. Yankat Dashe, noted that the realignment had reshaped political calculations ahead of 2027.

“What we are witnessing is a major political shift. The ruling party has become more coordinated and more organised across the state,” he added.

Performance-driven support

Beyond political alignments, many stakeholders attribute the governor’s growing popularity to what they described as visible development efforts across critical sectors.

In Jos metropolis, residents point to ongoing road rehabilitation projects, urban renewal initiatives and sanitation campaigns as signs of governance gradually taking shape.

Several roads that had remained in poor condition for years are now undergoing reconstruction, easing movement within the city and improving commercial activities.

A community leader in Jos North, Mr. Jerry Ajang, said although challenges still exist, there are noticeable improvements.

“Some roads that were abandoned for years are now being fixed. It may not be perfect yet, but people can see progress,” he said.

Residents also commended efforts aimed at improving environmental sanitation and waste management in parts of the metropolis.

Rural devt and agriculture

In rural communities, particularly farming areas, residents say infrastructure improvements are beginning to impact agricultural activities positively.

Farmers in Barkin Ladi, Mangu and Kanam told Vanguard that better access roads had reduced transportation difficulties and post-harvest losses.

Mr. Timothy Datong, a farmer in Barkin Ladi, described the development as a relief to local farmers.

“Before now, transporting farm produce to markets was a serious challenge. With better roads, movement has become easier and farmers can now reach buyers faster,” he said.

He stressed the need for sustained investment in rural infrastructure to support food production and improve livelihoods across farming communities.

Kanam youths endorse Tinubu, Mutfwang

Political support for Governor Mutfwang received another boost in Kanam Local Government Area, where a coalition of ethnic youth groups endorsed both President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Caleb Mutfwang for re-election in 2027.

The endorsement was made during a gathering held at the Multipurpose Conference Centre in Dengi, headquarters of the local government area.

Speaking on behalf of the coalition, Mr. Sadiq Kwaltommai and Mr. Mustapha Bayuma said the decision followed consultations across the 20 wards of the council area.

The group said its endorsement of President Tinubu was based on the perceived impact of the Renewed Hope Agenda, especially in the areas of infrastructure, security and economic reforms.

On Governor Mutfwang, the youths described their support as “earned, not given,” citing projects and interventions in the area.

Among the projects highlighted were the rehabilitation of the Amper Dengi road, Gishare-Gwamlar Gidgid roads and other feeder roads, renovation of Government Secondary School, Dengi, upgrade of General Hospital, Dengi, and support for primary healthcare centres.

The coalition also commended the administration for the distribution of fertilisers and improved seeds to farmers, as well as regular payment of salaries and entitlements to workers and traditional rulers.

Rivers 2027: PDP, APC, LP, AA to jointly pick one governorship candidate — Wike

By Omeiza Ajayi

ABUJA – Federal Capital Territory FCT minister, Nyesom Wike on Saturday declared that the four political parties under the “Rainbow Coalition” in Rivers State will collectively agree on a single governorship candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections, shutting down speculation that any individual has already secured the ticket.

Wike, who spoke at a luncheon organized for coalition candidates in Port Harcourt, the state capital, said the alliance — comprising the Peoples Democratic Party PDP, All Progressives Congress APC, Labour Party LP and Action Alliance AA — has yet to settle on a flag-bearer, and that the decision will be taken jointly under the coalition’s leadership.

“The Rainbow Coalition, we have not chosen who will be the governor of Rivers State. But we have party candidates who have emerged under the Rainbow Coalition. The only decision we have taken is that we are going to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” the minister declared.

Wike dismissed what he described as premature victory celebrations among some of the aspirants, warning that such claims create a false impression and undermine his own political standing, particularly given his membership of the PDP.

He urged all candidates from the four parties to sustain their grassroots mobilisation until the coalition formally convenes to take a unified position, adding that every candidate in the alliance is “okay for Rivers State.”

The minister also spoke about what he called a long-standing pattern of external exploitation of Rivers State’s political tensions, accusing certain human rights activists, commentators, and media organizations of profiting from the state’s instability. He said the Rainbow Coalition was assembled to permanently end that dynamic.

“God said no, we must come together as a people, irrespective of our political leanings. What is important is that we must talk about the development of our state. We must talk about the unity of our state,” Wike said.

He also took a swipe at fringe parties — singling out the African Democratic Congress ADC — arguing that political noise and defections are no substitute for genuine electoral structure, and that only the PDP, APC, and Labour Party have demonstrated the operational depth to prosecute statewide and national elections across Nigeria.

2027: Rivers has no option but to back Tinubu – Wike

Published

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, has said Rivers State will continue to support President Bola Tinubu.

He pointed to the significant federal appointments and development projects the state has received under the current administration.

Wike stated this on Saturday in Port Harcourt, the state capital, during a luncheon organised by the Rainbow Coalition in honour of candidates participating in the 2027 governorship, National Assembly, and State Assembly elections in Rivers State.

The former governor of Rivers State urged residents to assess the benefits the state received from previous administrations and compare them with what it has gained in less than three years under the Tinubu administration.

He said the people of Rivers should appreciate the president for recognising and rewarding the state.

“Since 2023, look at how much Rivers State has gained from this administration compared to what it received from past governments.

“Take a look at the appointments and opportunities that have come to Rivers State. Compare them and tell yourselves the truth.

“President Tinubu has shown great appreciation to the people of Rivers. We have to continue supporting him,” Wike said.

The minister dismissed the notion that ethnic and sectional sentiments should determine political choices.

Wike stressed that good governance and development should remain the key considerations for voters.

He urged his political supporters to focus on grassroots mobilisation rather than spending excessive time in the media.

He noted that elections are won at the polling unit level.

“Television will not give you votes. To get votes, you need to go to your polling units, which are in your wards and local governments.

“Make sure to take care of your polling unit, your ward, and your local government,” he said.

Wike also expressed confidence in the political strength of the Rainbow Coalition, saying the group would perform strongly in future elections in the state.

“If you want to have a say in Rivers politics, come and be part of the Rainbow Coalition.

“If you want to be a governor, senator, member of the House of Representatives, or councillor, come and be part of our group,” he said.

The FCT minister warned that any attempt to destabilise Rivers State would not be tolerated, insisting that the state would resist efforts to undermine its interests.

“The people of Rivers are calm and peaceful, but no one should mistake our peaceful nature for weakness.

“No one can come here and take what belongs to our people,” he said.

Wike also called on aggrieved politicians to return and work with the coalition, assuring them that there was room for reconciliation and cooperation.

“I am taking this opportunity to forgive everyone. Come back home with a sincere heart, and let us work together to move Rivers State forward,” he said.

The former governor maintained that leadership should be judged by competence and commitment to public service rather than ethnicity or religion.

“It doesn’t matter where a leader comes from. What matters is that the person will not disappoint us for supporting him.

“Our focus is on good governance and the development of Rivers State,” he said.

2027: We remain strong despite Ifeanyi Ubah’s death, not collapsing into APC – YPP

The National Chairman of the Young Progressives Party, YPP, Comrade Bishop Amakiri, has said that the party is not collapsing into the All Progressives Congress, APC

Addressing reporters in Abuja during the ratification of it candidates by the party’s leadership in Abuja, the YPP boss also responded to the general belief that since the death of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, the party has struggled to attract major political figures.

He also cleared the air on the speculation the YPP was planning on collapsing into the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, saying, ‘Perhaps that is merely media speculation. To the best of my knowledge, there has been no such discussion. I do not even know of any APC member who has approached us with such a proposal.

“Besides, why would the YPP collapse its structure into the APC? What exactly has the APC done differently that would make such a move attractive to us? As for the presidential election, I am not focused on the candidates of other political parties.”

On death of Uba, he said, “It would be unfair to say that Senator Ifeanyi Ubah’s passing did not affect the party. It certainly did. However, to suggest that his death ended the party’s fortunes would be incorrect.

“The party remains focused and on course. Since Senator Ubah’s demise, there has not been a general election through which the party’s strength can be fully assessed.

“Therefore, it would be premature to conclude that the YPP has lost its grip.
There is no doubt that Senator Ubah was a political force and a team player who gave the party significant visibility and prominence.

“Much of what the party enjoys today stems from the impact of his electoral victory. If he had not won that election, perhaps we would not be discussing the YPP at this level today.

“The good thing, however, is that we have consolidated on those gains and continued to make inroads into Nigeria’s political landscape. We miss him greatly, but I believe that wherever he is, he would be proud of the role he played in the history and growth of the YPP.”

He added, “The YPP remains one of the parties to watch in the forthcoming 2027 general elections. We are focused, and I can assure Nigerians that the party has a lot to offer. We have positive ideas, policies, and programmes that can move the country forward.

“I am focused on the presidential candidate of the Young Progressives Party. By the grace of God, we will nominate a candidate who will offer Nigerians a credible alternative.”
