Bayelsa APC primaries: ICPC, APC receive two petitions against varsity don

Published

on

Two prominent Civil Society Organizations, CSOs, have filed separate petitions before the All Progressives Congress, APC, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC.

The groups are challenging the eligibility of a Bayelsa-based professor, Prof. Princewill Woyinbrakemi Igbagara, to contest the Sagbama/Ekeremor Federal Constituency seat on the platform of the ruling party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The petitions, both dated May 7, 2026, were filed by the Centre for Policy Advocacy and Leadership Development and the Peering Advocacy and Advancement Centre in Africa (PAACA).

Though filed separately, both organizations raised identical concerns, that Igbagara, an indigene of Isoni Community in Sagbama Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, simultaneously holds the position of professor and lecturer at the Federal University, Otuoke, while also serving as Special Adviser to the Bayelsa State Governor on Science and Technology, and had held both roles concurrently as recently as April 20, 2026.

Both groups argued that this dual occupation of remunerated public offices, one at a federal institution and another as a political appointee, runs contrary to established public service regulations and ethical guidelines governing conflict of interest and double remuneration from public funds.

They also cited constitutional provisions, specifically Section 66(1)(f) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), which states that “no person shall be qualified for election to the Senate or the House of Representatives if he is a person employed in the public service of the Federation or of any State and has not resigned, withdrawn, or retired from such employment at least thirty days before the date of the election.”

PAACA, in its petition signed by its Executive Director, Ezenwa Nwagwu, described itself as a non-partisan organization committed to promoting electoral integrity, democratic accountability, good governance, and compliance with Nigeria’s constitutional and electoral framework.

The group said it was acting in line with its mandate to ensure all aspirants and political actors are held to the same legal and ethical standards.

PAACA wrote: “Holding dual remunerated public offices, one at a federal institution and another as a political appointee, contravenes established public service regulations and ethical guidelines governing conflict of interest and double remuneration from public funds.

“The simultaneous occupation of these offices may constitute a violation of constitutional provisions relating to public officers seeking elective positions while retaining public employment or appointments.

“Maintaining both positions while pursuing political ambition raises concerns about abuse of office, unfair access to public resources, and the misuse of government institutions for political purposes.

“We trust that your office will treat this matter with the urgency it deserves in the interests of the party and in upholding the rule of law, transparency, and democratic integrity,” Nwagwu wrote.

I’m simplest politician who doesn’t steal money – Amaechi

Former aspirant of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Rotimi Amaechi, has described himself as a simple politician who doesn’t steal money.

Amaechi, in an interview with media personality, Chude Jideonwo, said transparency is not an easy thing when talking about corruption.

He said: “I’m the simplest politician you can meet in Nigeria. When they meet me and see how simple and ordinary I am, it sweeps them off their feet.

“When I say I won’t steal money, 80% of the time I’m serious. Is it easy to swear to God and say in your life you won’t steal?

“Transparency is not an easy thing in terms of corruption. Have you really gone to take people’s money, no.

“Most of the things you have, you really have to say that the office helped you to influence it, so there are a lot of loans some of us took, if it weren’t the government they wouldn’t give you.”

The Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has described the presidential ambition of Governor Seyi Makinde as dead on arrival.

The APC made this declaration in a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare.

The statement was made available to DAILY POST on Sunday.

DAILY POST gathered that Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State had on Saturday emerged as the presidential candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Our correspondent reports that the APM flag was presented to the governor at an event in Ibadan, the state capital.

The APC, in its reaction, alleged that the governor has abandoned the state to pursue his ambition.

The party, while declaring the governor’s ambition dead on arrival, said that he had failed to meet the expectations of the people over the last seven years.

The APC further maintained that the governor has no excuse other than to perform his constitutional responsibilities.

The party noted that, as governor, Makinde is in a position to tackle the array of problems facing the state.

The APC said in the statement: “Certainly, Gov. Makinde’s presidential ambition is dead on arrival, but our fear is about the amount of losses, deprivation and wastefulness which the good people of the state would be subjected to in the next one year under his leadership.

“The people of Oyo State deserve a team player, a sincere and humble person as their governor, and since Makinde has failed to demonstrate these qualities in the last seven years, he should just apologise and quit the state.”
