Atiku kicks against Southern Presidency, warns opposition against self-defeatist politics

.Says, S’East deserves better than tokenism
By Omeiza Ajayi
ABUJA: The camp of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Monday fired a warning at opposition political actors, telling them that insisting on zoning the 2027 presidential ticket to the South would amount to entering the contest “already defeated.”
In a statement issued by his media aide, Olusola Sanni, the Atiku camp described the push for a southern opposition candidate as “self-defeating and intellectually dishonest,” arguing that Nigerian political history offered no precedent for an opposition challenger from the same geopolitical bloc as a sitting president ever unseating that president.
“The first and most obvious question is this: how does a Southern opposition candidate realistically unseat a sitting Southern president? Nigerian political history offers no precedent for such an outcome. No incumbent president has ever been defeated by an opposition challenger from the same geopolitical bloc. To insist otherwise is to enter the contest already defeated,” the statement said.
The camp acknowledged that the ruling All Progressives Congress APC could reasonably retain its southern presidential configuration around incumbent President Bola Tinubu, but argued that the opposition had no business applying the same logic without a cold-eyed assessment of electoral realities.
“Defeating an incumbent president requires realism, not romanticism; strategy, not sentiment; honesty, not selective memory. The opposition must decide whether its goal is to make an emotional statement or to actually win power,” the statement warned.
On the equity argument advanced by proponents of southern zoning, the Atiku camp was dismissive.
It noted that by 2027, the South would have held presidential power for approximately 18 years in the Fourth Republic against roughly 10 years for the North, and that handing the South another four years would deepen rather than correct that imbalance.
“It therefore becomes difficult to understand the justice in an argument that seeks to deepen an already existing imbalance under the guise of equity,” the statement said.
The camp also faulted what it called selective memory among political actors who abandoned the zoning principle in 2011 following the death of President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, supporting Goodluck Jonathan’s southern presidency despite the North’s expectation under the informal rotation arrangement, only to now present the same principle as a sacred political doctrine.
“It is intellectually dishonest for those who enthusiastically supported a Southern presidency under Goodluck Jonathan in 2011, despite the North’s legitimate expectation under the informal zoning arrangement, to now suddenly posture as custodians of rotational justice. Principles do not become sacred only when they align with personal ambition,” the statement said.
The Atiku camp was careful to affirm the Southeast’s aspiration to produce a president as legitimate, but drew a sharp distinction between that aspiration and what it described as “transactional political bargaining” or “symbolic tokenism” designed to serve one individual’s ambition.
“The Southeast deserves a sustainable and credible pathway to national leadership — not symbolic tokenism or bespoke arrangements tailored to satisfy one individual’s ambition,” it stated.
The statement urged the opposition to channel its energy into building a credible national coalition capable of defeating Tinubu at the polls, warning that sentiment-driven zoning debates risked inadvertently strengthening the incumbent’s re-election prospects.
Atiku, a northern Muslim from Adamawa State, has contested the presidency multiple times and remains one of the most prominent opposition figures ahead of the 2027 cycle.

2027: PRP clears Donald Duke as presidential candidate
The National Working Committee, NWC, of the Peoples Redemption Party, PRP, has cleared a former governor of Cross River State, Donald Duke, as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections.
The News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, says Duke’s clearance came after the Primaries Appeal Committee finished reviewing the recent primary elections. The NWC approved the committee’s report.
A statement by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Muhammed Ishaq, on Saturday, said the NWC also approved results of governorship, Senate, House of Representatives and State House of Assembly primaries.
Ishaq disclosed that all declared candidates were approved to run in the 2027 general elections, except for the Tarauni Federal Constituency in Kano, where the primary election was canceled.
He said the party plans to field 420 candidates in the 2027 general elections.
Ishaq said, “In line with our dedication to being actively involved in the election process, the PRP is proud to have 420 candidates running for all the positions in the 2027 general elections.”
He expressed the PRP’s commitment to the principles of internal democracy and service, as well as to delivering credible and transformative leadership for the country.

Gombe-Biu Highway: North-East will reciprocate with massive votes for Tinubu in 2027 — Ndume
Borno South senator, Ali Ndume, has said the people of North-East will reciprocate President Bola Tinubu’s infrastructure reforms in the region with massive votes in the 2027 general election.
He disclosed this in a statement on Saturday following the flag-off of the reconstruction and dualization of the 125-kilometer Gombe-Biu highway.
The senator hailed Tinubu and the minister of works, David Umahi, for redeeming their pledges to put the road in good shape.
He said, “In 2019, during a high-level engagement with the then minister of works and housing, Babatunde Raji Fashola, which I initiated, I expressed concerns regarding the deplorable condition of the Biu–Gombe Road, emphasizing its strategic significance to economic integration, interstate mobility, security operations, and regional development within the Northeast subregion.
“Also in July 2021, during an engagement with the Ministry of Works, during deliberations connected to national infrastructure financing frameworks, including projects tied to African Development Bank-supported facilities, I also made a presentation on the urgent need to include the Biu–Gombe corridor within federal rehabilitation priorities, strategic funding windows, and long-term infrastructure development frameworks.
“It is heartwarming to note that my interaction with the present minister of works, engineer Dave Umahi, in a letter dated February 11, 2026, in which I drew his attention to the exclusion of Biu/Damboa/Maiduguri, all in Borno State, in the 2026 budget for four legacy projects of the present administration finally paid off as the Federal Executive Council (FEC) eventually approved the Biu–Gombe Road project under the federal tax credit and infrastructure intervention framework.
“The project was subsequently captured among strategic national road interventions financed through the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) tax liabilities arrangement.”
“I want to appreciate Mr. President for listening to my calls.
“It is a laudable project that will unlock economic opportunities and improve the quality of life for Nigerians.”
“I am sure that the people of the Northeast will appreciate this gesture of Mr. President and reward him with their votes in the forthcoming general elections.”
Recall that the road project, valued at N1.245 trillion, was flagged on Thursday in Liji, Gombe State.

2027: ADC reviews Benue guber primary, withholds Hembe’s Certificate of Return
Two weeks after the African Democratic Congress, ADC, governorship primary election in Benue State, the declared winner, Herman Hembe, is yet to receive his Certificate of Return, amid an ongoing review of the exercise by the party’s national leadership.
The development follows petitions submitted by some aspirants who are demanding a fresh primary, alleging that the process that produced the reported winner was flawed and failed to reflect the wishes of party members.
A party source told our reporter on Saturday that the national body of the ADC is currently reviewing the outcome of the exercise, hence the delay in issuing a certificate of return to Hembe.
The petitioners, Joseph Waya and Peter Adejoh, in separate petitions to the party leadership, raised concerns over the conduct of the exercise and called for a review of the outcome. They also urged the party to constitute a new governorship electoral committee made up of individuals who are neither indigenes nor residents of Benue State to guarantee neutrality and credibility in any subsequent process.
In a statement obtained by DAILY POST on Saturday, Waya faulted a memo reportedly issued by ‘The Herman Hembe Gubernatorial Campaign Organisation Benue 2027’ announcing the constitution of a committee to select a running mate for the Benue ADC governorship ticket.
According to him, the party has yet to conclude its review of the primary election.
However, despite the development, Hembe has set up a nine-man committee to pick his running mate ahead of 2027 polls.
Reacting, Waya said, “We wish to state that ADC Benue has no governorship candidate yet as the primaries are currently under review by the National Secretariat of the African Democratic Congress in line with directives from the National Chairman and resolutions of the just-concluded NEC.”
He argued that constituting a committee for the selection of a running mate before the conclusion of the review process was premature.
“This is therefore a clear case of putting the cart before the horse, to be shopping for a deputy when the party has not yet declared its governorship candidate.
“It is procedurally improper for any campaign organisation to constitute committees on running mate selection when the substantive ticket remains under review and no candidate has emerged,” he stated.
Waya further noted that the memo referenced consultations with the national and state leadership of the party but did not provide evidence of any formal approval or directive from the National Secretariat.
Similarly, Peter Adejoh, the only governorship aspirant from Benue South Senatorial District, commended the party leadership for reviewing the primary election and expressed confidence that the process would strengthen internal democracy within the ADC.
Adejoh urged the national leadership of the party to ensure that all grievances arising from the exercise are thoroughly addressed in the interest of fairness, transparency and party unity.
“I commend the national leadership of our party for reviewing the governorship primary election. This demonstrates the party’s commitment to transparency, fairness, and internal democracy.
“I believe all concerns raised by aspirants should be carefully considered in the interest of justice, party unity, and the overall success of the ADC in Benue State.
“It is surprising that a committee for the selection of a running mate is being constituted when the party has not concluded its review and no Certificate of Return has been issued. Such actions are capable of creating confusion among party members and the public,” Adejoh said.
