Police blockade of PDP convention attack on Nigeria democracy – Agbedi

Published

on

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, caucus leader at the House Of Representatives, Fred Agbedi, has frowned at the Nigeria police blockade of the party’s convention.

Speaking in an interview on Arise Television on Sunday, Agbedi described the action as an attack on Nigeria’s democracy.

Operatives of the Nigeria police on Saturday allegedly barricaded roads leading to the venue scheduled for the ratification of former President Goodluck Jonathan as the presidential candidate of the Taminu Turaki-led faction of the PDP.

Reacting to the incident, Agbedi said, “They blocked the entire route, denied Nigerians access to the road, and prevented the PDP from using a venue it had lawfully secured for its convention.

“Faced with what we believe was an attempt to shrink the political space, the PDP leadership, supporters, and members stood their ground and remained vigilant, ensuring that the convention was not aborted.

“In a democracy, these are troubling signs that should concern every citizen. Any attempt to restrict legitimate political activities undermines democratic values and raises serious questions about the country’s commitment to free, fair, and open political participation.

“Nigerians must remain vigilant in defending democratic space and constitutional freedoms.”

2027: ‘Kwankwaso will be partner, not spare tyre’ – Obi

ABUJA — Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, for the 2027 election, Peter Obi, has said his administration would make the office of the Vice President an active partner in governance and not a ceremonial position.

Obi stated this on Saturday while accepting his affirmation as the party’s presidential candidate and announcing Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election.

In a statement posted on his X platform, Obi pledged to uphold the rule of law, strengthen democratic institutions and ensure transparency in governance if elected president.

According to him, the rule of law would be strictly observed by both public officials and citizens in line with constitutional provisions.

“The rule of law will be fiercely upheld, and adherence to it will be sacrosanct for both government officials and citizens alike, strictly in accordance with our constitutional frameworks,” he said.

Obi also promised to promote a democratic system that respects opposition parties and guarantees inclusive governance.

“Our democracy will exemplify true governance of the people, by the people and for the people, completely free from interference by the ruling party. Instead, we will institutionalise deep respect for opposition parties and foster constructive engagement in governance.

“Under my leadership, democracy will be pursued with integrity, fairness and transparency,” he stated.

Speaking on the role of his running mate, Obi said the vice president under his administration would play a meaningful role in governance.

“I will make democracy work, and the Vice President will be a partner, not a spare tyre. I hereby accept my affirmation and nominate Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso as my Vice President,” he said.

Obi expressed confidence that the partnership would contribute to his vision of national renewal, improved governance and economic transformation.

Past three years have not been easy for us – NNPP

The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has called on its members across the country to remain focused and committed ahead of the 2027 general elections despite the challenges facing the party.

The call was made by the party’s National Secretary, Dipo Olayoku, during the 11th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Abuja on Saturday.
Olayoku said the party had gone through a difficult period since the 2023 elections, particularly with the defection of several elected officials and appointees who emerged under its platform.

“The past three years have not been easy for this party. All our elected members and appointees in government, whom we laboured to bring into office, have left in the name of political realignment,” he said.

Despite the setbacks, he urged party members not to lose hope but to remain united and work towards achieving better results in the next election cycle.

“We must remain focused and work towards a stronger outing in 2027,” he added.
According to him, the NEC meeting marked the end of a series of internal political activities carried out from the ward level to the state level, aimed at preparing the party for the upcoming elections.
