10 Wealthiest Footballers at 2026 World Cup
With the 2026 World Cup fast approaching on the horizon, it’s still impossible to know which team will go all the way this summer. One certainty, however, is that the finest players on the planet will be doing their best to make the difference.
The likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have gone into past tournaments as the biggest talents on show, but a newer generation – made up of stars such as Lamine Yamal, Erling Haaland and two-time finalist Kylian Mbappe – will be just as closely watched this summer. It will be fascinating to see which individual has the biggest impact.
Whoever helps guide their nation to glory will forever be revered in their homeland. And with that level of respect will come great financial reward. Of course, as money is so key in modern football, many of the key stars are already incredibly wealthy.
With that in mind, as reported by the Sun, here are the 10 richest footballers going to the 2026 World Cup, according to their net worth.
10
James Rodriguez (Colombia) – £59m
It won’t feel like a true World Cup until fans get a flash of Colombia hero James Rodriguez in that famous yellow kit. After all, it was at the 2014 tournament where he announced himself as a global superstar, bagging the Golden Boot after netting six goals in Brazil.
That success helped him secure a mega-money move to Real Madrid, while he has since played for the likes of Bayern Munich and Everton. Rodriguez, now 34, plays for MLS side Minnesota United, which has helped contribute to his £59m net worth. Despite some recent health issues, he’ll hope to make a positive impact for his country this summer.

9
Erling Haaland (Norway) – £59m
Manchester City and Norway striker Erling Haaland is one of the best goal scorers on the planet right now and goes into the tournament as the joint-most valuable player in terms of transfer estimation. He’s currently the highest-paid player in the Premier League, so it’s no shock to see him make it onto this list.
They say putting the ball in the back of the net is the hardest thing to do in football, but Haaland makes that look easy, with 162 goals in 198 games for Man City. Stats like that are why, at still only 25 years old, the striker is said to make over half a million pounds every week for his club.
8
Riyad Mahrez (Algeria) – £63m
Riyad Mahrez established himself as one of the brightest wingers on the planet during his Premier League title-winning season at Leicester City. He’s since played for two clubs that were more than willing to offer him large sums of money to join.
Indeed, he first joined Man City and spent five seasons at the Etihad, winning four Premier League titles. He then joined Al-Ahli in 2023, and the Saudi Pro League have made him the eighth-best-paid player at the tournament. This will be just his second World Cup, having first featured in the competition for Algeria over a decade ago in 2014.
7
Son Heung-min (South Korea) – £74m
Some look at Son Heung-min and wonder why he spent so long at Tottenham Hotspur, failing to win the trophies a player of his talent deserved. However, he departed in 2025, having finally got his hands on a Europa League title, before then joining Los Angeles FC.
In fairness, if the South Korean does have any regrets about his career, they likely won’t relate to the financial side of things. Now 33, the MLS star is among the richest footballers in the world with a £74m net worth. A superstar representative of Asian football, he’ll have no shortage of brand deals even as his status as an elite player begins to wind down.
6
Mohamed Salah (Egypt) – £104m
Mohamed Salah is now set to leave Liverpool after a stunning career at Anfield. The good news for whoever he joins is that he will arrive as a free transfer, the bad news is that he will cost a huge amount in wages. After all, his final contract with the Reds saw him pick up a reported £400,000-per-week.
Salah certainly earned such a big contract, firing the English giants to their first two Premier League titles, as well as a Champions League and multiple other cups. Now 33, it remains to be seen how much longer he has left at the highest level. His performances for Egypt this summer could give a good indication of that.

5
Harry Kane (England) – £110m
There are very few better players on the planet than Harry Kane right now, even the player has backed himself among the favourites to win the 2026 Ballon d’Or. With 61 goals and seven assists in 51 games, it’s hard to argue against the Englishman’s theory that he just needs a World Cup trophy to make himself the frontrunner.
His status as the Three Lions’ record goalscorer, with 74 strikes, has helped make him a household name across Britain, and it’s no surprise that vast riches have subsequently followed. With a net worth of £110m, there are few active players on the planet as well off financially – and only four who are going to the World Cup this summer.
4
Kylian Mbappe (France) – £186m
Kylian Mbappe has been France’s key man at the past two World Cups. He scored in the 2018 final as his nation lifted the trophy, while he then became just the second player in history to net a hat-trick in a final as the French were beaten by Argentina in 2022.
He established himself at Monaco but was swiftly picked up by Paris Saint-Germain, before joining Real Madrid in 2024. While the major toprhies he no doubt dreamed of have not yet followed in the Spanish capital, he certainly won’t have to worry about money any time soon. His various contracts over the years have seen him make £186m.
3
Neymar (Brazil) – £334m
There were major doubts that Neymar would even make the Brazil squad but Carlo Ancelotti decided to take a chance on the ageing winger. Now 34, he’s hardly the player he once was, but there can be no doubting his talent.
More than anything, it’s a question of fitness with the player, and having suffered a recent grade two muscle injury in his right calf, he faces a race against time to be involved this summer. Worth a whopping £334m, Neymar would likely trade a huge chunk of his personal wealth just to get his hands on the World Cup trophy.
2
Lionel Messi (Argentina) – £742m
Lionel Messi has long been viewed by many as the greatest footballer of all time. Those who were on the fence may well have been swayed by his World Cup-winning display in 2022, as he led Argentina to glory with seven goals and three assists. Now 38, it will be fascinating to see how he gets on this summer.
One advantage he has is that he will be acclimated to the conditions, having been playing for MLS side Inter Miami since 2023. The US club offered Messi a huge wage to get him on board, which has significantly boosted his net worth. The living legend is likely to bow out from international football after the tournament, so fans best enjoy him while they still can.
1
Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal) – £1bn
Although most view Messi as the best based on pure footballing talent, Cristiano Ronaldo tends to rank above him when it comes to the financial side of the game. This list is no exception to that rule, with the 41-year-old the only player at the 2026 World Cup who is worth over a billion pounds.
Ronaldo really made a name for himself at Manchester United before joining Real Madrid. His best years were spent at those two clubs, but he’s kept chipping away at all sorts of goal-scoring records across spells at Juventus, a return to Old Trafford, and now in the Saudi Pro League with Al-Nassr. Essentially, all he has left to win in his career is the World Cup, and this is likely his final chance to achieve that goal. Predict strong emotions, whatever the outcome.

Why Rio Ngumoha Can’t be Called into England’s World Cup Squad
During the first of their two pre-World Cup friendly matches, England faced New Zealand on Saturday. It was a match of little incident as Thomas Tuchel gave 22 players game time to help his squad acclimate to the US weather and pitch conditions.
In the end, a single goal from Harry Kane, who headed in a winner moments before half-time, was enough to settle things. As it was more of a training exercise than a real match, Tuchel seemed mostly happy that his players had come through the 90 minutes unscathed.
However, fans watching at home could not help but notice the lively cameo from Liverpool youngster Rio Ngumoha. He isn’t in the Three Lions squad for the World Cup, and will not feature even if injuries force Tuchel into making a change from his original 26-man team.
Rio Ngumoha Among Four Youngsters In England Supplementary Group
It’s not uncommon for a handful of players to travel to a World Cup despite not being in the actual playing squad. This is to help make up the numbers during training and is particularly useful for Tuchel right now as Arsenal contingent Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, Noni Madueke, and Eberechi Eze have arrived at the camp later than the rest of the team due to their participation in the Champions League final.
Goalkeeper Dean Henderson will also join them, delayed after winning the Conference League with Crystal Palace. With those men absent, Ngumoha is among a small group – along with Alex Scott, Josh King and Ethan Nwaneri – who have travelled as supplementary members of the England squad.
Against New Zealand, Ngumoha, aged 17 years and 281 days, became the fifth-youngest player to debut for the England men’s team. On what was a pretty drab affair, he was arguably the brightest player on the pitch during the second half. He was even named as the Man of the Match.
As such, some fans were pleading with Tuchel to call him into the senior squad as a late addition ahead of the World Cup. However, this is not a possibility, and so the Liverpool starlet will fly home with the other youngsters after the final warm-up match against Costa Rica on 10 June.

Fans online have reacted strongly.
Why Ngumoha Won’t Be in England’s World Cup Team
Of course, it would be very harsh to suddenly drop a player in favour of Ngumoha. But many may hope for an injury to open up the door for a teenager. Even if this were the case, Tuchel would still have to look elsewhere for a replacement. This is because he was not called into the provisional 55-man squad submitted to FIFA by England. As per the Mirror, the strict FIFA eligibility rule explain:
“Under World Cup regulations, teams can call up a late injury replacement up to 24 hours before their opening match. However, the player must come from the provisional 55-man squad submitted to FIFA.”
As Ngumoha was not included on that initial 55-man list, he cannot be added to the tournament squad under any circumstances. The same goes for Fulham and Arsenal duo King and Nwaneri. In fact, there is only one player from the group of four youngsters who could make it in at this late stage: Bournemouth star Alex Scott. He was named in the preliminary 55-man party, making him eligible for a late promotion should injury occur.
England have until 24 hours before their opening match against Croatia to make any changes should injury or illness befall anyone in the 26-man squad. After the tournament begins, FIFA rules state that only goalkeepers can be replaced in the event of an emergency.

England Fans Claim Thomas Tuchel Has Made Major Rio Ngumoha Mistake
England manager Thomas Tuchel has made one major mistake with his 2026 World Cup squad selection, according to fans, following Saturday’s narrow 1-0 win over New Zealand.
Tuchel made several controversial calls while naming his 26-man squad last month, leaving out global stars including Phil Foden, Cole Palmer and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
The German tactical, who was appointed as Sir Gareth Southgate’s successor in October 2024, believes he’s assembled a squad who are all “100% committed”, “ready to buy into their role on and off the pitch” and “who are ready and committed to the idea of team spirit and being unselfish”.
Tuchel named two different XIs either side of half-time at the Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, where the ‘shameful’ prices being charged for drinks left fans dismayed.
Harry Kane, a leading contender for the 2026 Ballon d’Or award, scored the only goal of the match shortly before the interval as the testing temperatures and poor playing surface affected England’s game.

Fans Fear Tuchel Has Made Squad Selection Error
Aside from another goal for Kane, plus the clean sheet, the biggest positive for England was the eye-catching performance of Rio Ngumoha who, aged 17 years and 281 days, became the fifth-youngest player to debut for the England men’s team.
The Liverpool starlet posed a constant threat down the right flank with his pace, skill and directness. A fearless performance, Ngumoha deservedly received the Player of the Match award on his England debut. Watch his highlights below:
However, the teenager is not part of England’s 26-man World Cup squad. The gifted winger is one of several youngsters who are gaining experience before flying back home before the tournament begins.
Fulham’s Josh King, Marseille’s Ethan Nwaneri and Bournemouth’s Alex Scott will also leave the England camp after the final warm-up match against Costa Rica on June 10.
Fans believe Tuchel has made a big mistake by not including Ngumoha in the final World Cup squad based on the evidence presented during Saturday’s warm-up win over New Zealand.
“It’s an absolute travesty that Noni Madueke is on that plane ahead of him,” one fan commented on X (Twitter), while another said:
“Rio Ngumoha looks like he’s been playing for England for years. Definitely missed a trick not taking him! Bringing someone like him on to run at a tired defence with 20 minutes to go would have been a great option to have.”
A third fan commented: “Thomas Tuchel not adding Rio Ngumoha in the World Cup squad is absolutely not brilliant, you just cannot afford not to add that kind of quality player,” while a fourth added: “Rio Ngumoha was unbelievable tonight, best player on the pitch. Just a shame Tuchel would rather have Madueke in the squad. Hugely disappointing.”
While a fifth supporter posted: “Rio on his England debut, what a baller. Tuchel, you are making a mistake, he’s better than all the wingers in England’s squad.”
Ngumoha made 19 appearances for Liverpool in the Premier League last season, scoring two goals and providing one assist. He also made four appearances in both the Champions League and FA Cup, plus two more in the EFL Cup.

Tottenham Set to Complete Marcos Senesi Transfer After Andy Robertson
Tottenham are set to complete another summer signing after securing the signature of Andy Robertson, according to Fabrizio Romano.
It’s been a strong start to the summer transfer window for Spurs, which is no surprise after such a disappointing season.
Roberto De Zerbi’s side needed to invest in their squad, and they’ve wasted no time in trying to bring new additions to the club.
If Tottenham want to head him back in the right direction, they need to bring in reinforcements this summer. It looks as though they’ve already got two deals over the line.
Robertson was recently confirmed as their first summer signing, joining the club on a free transfer after leaving Liverpool.

Tottenham Close to Second Summer Transfer
According to Romano, Tottenham are now set to secure another signing after it was confirmed that Robertson would be joining the club.
The respected journalist has confirmed that Tottenham have now completed a double free transfer signing, bringing in Robertson and Marcos Senesi, who joins the club on a four-year deal.
Despite various rumours, Romano confirms that there is no chance for anyone to hijack a deal for Senesi after he said yes to Spurs weeks ago and completed a medical on Saturday.

Strong Start to Window for Tottenham
Bringing in both Senesi and Robertson ahead of the summer transfer window is a strong start for Tottenham for multiple reasons.
Both players have been playing at a high level in the Premier League and will instantly improve their squad, if not their starting XI.
They also have plenty of experience, both in general and in the Premier League, which is what Tottenham need after a disappointing few years.
Spurs have signed a host of young talent from around the world over the last few years, so adding a bit of experience will be beneficial.
Whether the duo will start every week remains to be seen, but there’s a strong chance they will be crucial signings for Tottenham.
