Outrage in Benue as soldiers allegedly assault youth volunteers
Residents of Apa Local Government Area of Benue State have expressed outrage following allegations that soldiers assaulted and disarmed youth volunteers who were mobilising to strengthen community security amid persistent attacks by suspected armed herders.
The incident reportedly occurred in Adija community, days after three farmers were said to have been killed in Ikobi community, one of several areas that have experienced repeated security challenges in recent months.
According to local sources, youth volunteers from various communities had gathered in Ologo and Asaba villages to discuss security concerns and possible community protection measures.
The volunteers were reportedly intercepted by soldiers while returning to their respective communities.
During the encounter, a local vigilante commander, Olowo Otache, and his younger brother were allegedly beaten and sustained injuries.
Residents said the two men were subsequently taken to General Hospital, Ugbokpo, where they received medical attention.
The incident reportedly provoked anger among residents, leading to protests and a temporary blockade of the Otukpo–Oweto Federal Highway by youths demanding improved security and greater protection for vulnerable communities.
Speaking on the development, a youth volunteer identified as Adu Aboh said local youths had become increasingly concerned about the frequency of attacks and killings in the area.
According to him, many residents believe their communities remain exposed to security threats despite repeated appeals for intervention.
Aboh further alleged that soldiers confiscated locally made firearms belonging to some volunteers during the operation.
Another resident, Energy Onoja, said local volunteers had previously collaborated with security agencies, particularly the police, to support community safety efforts.
He expressed concern that the latest incident could undermine local security initiatives.
Residents also highlighted growing insecurity along the Apa–Agatu corridor, where several communities have reportedly experienced attacks, displacement of residents and destruction of livelihoods.
Ofu Adu, a resident of Ochumekwu community, alleged that security agencies were often informed before attacks occurred but that responses sometimes arrived after significant damage had been done.
The latest development has intensified calls for stronger security deployment across vulnerable communities in Apa Local Government Area.
Community leaders appealed to the Federal Government, security agencies and the Benue State Government to strengthen protective measures, investigate the allegations and restore public confidence in security operations.
As of the time of filing this report, the Nigerian military had not issued an official statement regarding the allegations.

Bauchi man found slaughtered in room as rights group faults police investigation
A 33-year-old man, Najamu Aminu, was found slaughtered in his room in the Gwallaga area of Bauchi metropolis, triggering fear among residents and raising concerns over police investigation into the incident.
The deceased was reportedly discovered in a pool of blood on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, with residents suspecting that he was attacked by assailants while asleep.
The killing has thrown the community into panic, as residents expressed shock over the gruesome nature of the crime.
The incident was reported to the Township Police Division, popularly known as “A Division”, whose operatives evacuated the corpse and later released it to the family for burial.
However, the Organisation for African Child Development and Human Rights Protection has questioned the handling of the case by the police.
Speaking to journslists yesterday, the Team Lead of the organisation, Alkasim Muhammad, alleged that no suspect had been arrested or invited for questioning days after the incident.
He also claimed that police officers had not returned to the scene to interview witnesses or gather further evidence.
Muhammad further questioned the decision to release the victim’s body for burial shortly after it was recovered and why the case was allegedly not immediately transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a detailed probe.
“Why did the DPO so quickly release the deceased’s body for burial within three hours without investigation? Why did the DPO single-handedly treat a homicide case at the divisional level without transferring it to the CID for further investigation, having fully known that such cases are above divisional level?
“Why did the DPO fail to revisit the crime scene for further investigation?” he asked.
The group urged the Commissioner of Police to constitute a special investigation team, order an autopsy on the deceased, arrest suspects linked to the killing and investigate the conduct of the Divisional Police Officer.
Reacting in a press statement issued on Saturday, the spokesman for the Bauchi State Police Command, SP Nafiu Abubakar, said the matter had already been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for discreet and thorough investigation.
According to him, preliminary investigations commenced at the Township Division before the case was escalated to the SCID.
“The case was subsequently transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for discreet and thorough investigation.
“Operatives of the SCID have since taken over the matter and commenced an in-depth investigation to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the death and to identify and apprehend all persons connected with the crime,” he said.
Abubakar added that the Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, had assured residents that the command would leave no stone unturned in ensuring justice is served.
He urged members of the public with useful information that could assist the investigation to come forward and support the ongoing probe.

“Preliminary findings indicated that the victim was allegedly attacked by yet-to-be-identified militia members while returning from an illegal mining site in the area,” Oteh said.
