2027: SDP’s Adebayo kicks against ADC, other parties deregistration

Published

on

Presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party, SDP, in the 2023 election, Prince Adewole Adebayo, has condemned a court ruling which ordered the deregistration of some political parties, describing the development as unconstitutional, undemocratic and a threat to Nigeria’s democracy.

Adebayo, in a post on his X handle, said there was no constitutional, legal or moral justification for alternative political platforms to be suppressed through government action backed by judicial orders.

According to him, the development is particularly troubling as it comes barely days after the nation marked Democracy Day with celebrations, national honors and renewed commitments to democratic values.

He noted that although his party is not among those reportedly affected, remaining silent in the face of injustice would amount to abandoning democratic principles.

The ADP chieftain called on Nigerians and all defenders of democracy to stand in solidarity with the affected parties, including the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Action Alliance, AA, Action People’s Party, APP, Accord Party, AP, and Zenith Labour Party, ZLP.

Adebayo argued that Nigeria’s vast social, cultural, religious, economic and ideological diversity require a broad range of political platforms through which citizens can freely pursue their political aspirations.

He pledged support to the affected parties in their quest for justice and restoration through lawful means, stressing that democratic participation should never be restricted.

The SDP chieftain also advocated constitutional reforms to remove the powers of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to register or deregister political parties, limiting the commission’s role to conducting free, fair, and credible elections.

He proposed a system where political associations are free to field candidates, subject to statutory deposits, which parties failing to secure a minimum percentage of votes would forfeit.

Adebayo warned against policies capable of raising political tension in the country, urging leaders to focus on strengthening democratic institutions and promoting national development instead.

Recall that Justice Peter Lifu of the Abuja Federal High Court, in a ruling on Monday, had ordered INEC to deregister the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Accord Party, and others, and stop them from participating in the 2027 general election.

Natasha’s Suspension Forgery Allegation: 'We'll review Oshiomhole's comments' - Senate

The Senate spokesperson, Yemi Adaramodu, has said that allegations of signature forgery made by Senator Adams Oshiomhole (Edo North) on the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (Kogi central) will be reviewed.

Adaramodu said this in an interview with The cable. He said: “The Senate will take a cursory look at either extraneous, spontaneous or intentional comments from any senator appropriately.”

Vanguard reported that Oshiomhole alleged that the names of at least three senators were improperly included on the Senate Committee report that recommended the six-month suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central.

According to Oshiomhole, several lawmakers whose names appeared on the report told him they neither signed the document nor endorsed its recommendations. Read that story HERE.

However, speaking to The Cable on Tuesday, Senate spokesperson said: “We are going to review any statements made by him (Oshiomhole). The senate will take a cursory look at either extraneous, spontaneous or intentional comments from any senator appropriately.

“We are going to look into it. We will take a stand and everyone will know where we stand. But we can say no senator has reported that his or her senator was forged during the Natasha matter.

“It was debated on the floor of the senate openly at the plenary in the full glare of every Nigerian and even the international audience, and so nothing to hide.

“All Nigerians knew where we stood then on the issue of Natasha… that she ran foul of the senate’s orders. And we are orderly because we are bounded by orders of the senate.”

On the Independence of the senators, he said: “Nobody will say that he or she was coerced or somebody’s signature was forged; that has never happened in the senate and it cannot happen. It has never happened.

“Senators are independent-minded people. We are mature men and women. And if you have any infraction against anybody, that person can, without any advocate from anywhere, that person will show it.

“So there’s nothing like that. I’m just hearing it for the first time. That’s very strange.”

Appeal Court nullified my election but I’m providing conducive environment for judiciary – Wike

By

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, on Tuesday disclosed that he ensured that judicial officers got conducive environment despite losing an election appeal at the Court of Appeal.

Wike disclosed that the Appeal Court nullified his election but he remains steadfast in providing a conducive environment for judicial officers.

He made the disclosure during the
commissioning of Judges Quarters (Court of Appeal) and Flag-Off Construction of Quarters for Industrial Court, Code of Conduct Tribunal by President Bola Tinubu.

Tinubu was represented by the commissioning by the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi.

However, Wike also noted that Federal Government can’t carry out all projects, hence states should be involved.

According to Wike: “Federal government can’t do everything, I challenge states, governors, if there is one division in state A and the governor knows that the Federal High Court is there, who are they rendering services to? They are not rendering services to state B but A.

“The Court of Appeal is there, whom are they rendering services to? It’s your state, the Industrial Court is there. When I was governor, we used to go to Bayelsa State for Industrial Court and 80 percent of the cases came from Rivers.

“So I said why are we going to Bayelsa, I met the then-President of Industrial Court, why do we go to Bayelsa and he said the state was not willing but I said ‘I’m willing, give me the designs and we built for them , provided accomodations for them and today our people no longer go to Bayelsa to have there cases.

“Justice Bulkachuwa was the president of the Court of Appeal and my election was nullified, so ordinary I will not agree to do anything but whose going to lose? My people in the state will lose.

“Look at the residences of the Justices, so I didn’t wait for the Federal Government, if I had waited for the Federal Government it would take a longer time. So I challenge states not to leave everything to the Federal government.”
