Jake Paul Names Cristiano Ronaldo Among 10 Most Overrated Athletes of All Time
Jake Paul knows a thing or two about creating controversy, having been in the celebrity spotlight for nearly a decade. After making his name on social media, The Problem Child made his way into the sports world by becoming a “professional” boxer.
In truth, Paul is not considered by many to have a great deal of talent between the ropes, but that didn’t stop him from featuring in one of the most lucrative bouts of all time when he defeated heavyweight legend Mike Tyson in 2024. If that wasn’t enough, he then followed that fight up with a bout against British heavyweight Anthony Joshua at the end of last year, which ended with him sustaining a broken jaw in numerous places.
The 29-year-old, who really isn’t afraid to speak his mind, once savaged big names from a number of sports as he revealed his list of the 10 most overrated athletes of all time. As Paul shared his picks, he had a massive smile on his face, so it remains to be seen just how serious he was about his selections. Here is a look at all 10 stars who Paul believes get more credit than they are due.
Babe Ruth
Seven-time World Series winner
Paul certainly came straight out of the gate with a big name, stating that the widely-considered greatest icon in baseball history was “overrated.”
Ruth won the World Series on seven of the 10 occasions he participated in the sport’s showpiece event and hit a staggering 714 home runs in his career. A Hall of Famer who is beloved for the way in which he revolutionised the game, Paul will likely find little support for his criticism of Ruth’s place in history.
Trevor Lawrence
Picked first overall by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 2021 NFL Draft
Paul might be closer to the mark with his second pick, Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback, Trevor Lawrence, with his career blighted by inconsistent form and injury problems.
Jake Paul Curse: What’s Happened to His Opponents After Fighting Him is Strange
Whenever someone fights Jake Paul, it seems something weird happens to them immediately after.
Despite leading the team to a playoff win and the AFC South title in 2022, many feel that Lawrence has fallen well short of his potential. Paul branded the 26-year-old as “overrated and overpaid”, referring to his mammoth contract that sees him earning $55 million a year.
Cristiano Ronaldo
Five-time Ballon d’Or winner
Paul clearly knew his selection of the Portuguese superstar would be controversial, as he stated, “This one is gonna p*** off a lot of people!”
While the eternal debate over whether he is better than Argentine superstar Lionel Messi is destined never to be settled, Ronaldo‘s longevity at the top of the game is a major reason why his fans consider him to be the best to ever step foot onto the pitch.
While Paul is entitled to his personal opinion, it’s hard not to see Ronaldo’s inclusion as an attempt to stir up attention.
Ryan Garcia
Former WBC interim lightweight champion
The first boxer to make Paul’s list of “overrated” stars is polarising American, Ryan Garcia.
The California-native looked to be establishing himself as one of the top fighters on the planet before losing bouts to Gervonta Davis and Rolly Romero. Even after appearing to score the biggest win of his career against Devin Haney, Garcia tested positive for the banned substance Ostarine – and was stripped of his victory.
While it may be harsh to call him overrated, King Ryan certainly hasn’t lived up to some of the hype that surrounded him.
Conor McGregor
Former two-weight UFC champion
It’s no major surprise to see Paul name McGregor on his list. Despite not having fought in the UFC for five years, the Irishman remains vocal on social media – and is also a part-owner of the Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship.
Although McGregor is the biggest name in UFC history, he hasn’t actually won a fight for more than five years. Among a host of other names, the Irishman has teased an eventual bout with Paul – should he ever return to professional fighting.
Dak Prescott
Dallas Cowboys quarterback
Turning his attention back to the NFL, Paul took a swipe at “insanely overrated” Dallas Cowboys quarterback, Dak Prescott.
His 2024 season in Dallas was nothing short of disastrous, with the team going 7-10 overall. As controversial as many of Paul’s picks are, Prescott may not be one of them.
Anthony Edwards
Minnesota Timberwolves Shooting Guard
One of the more harsh calls on Paul’s list, Edwards has already achieved plenty in the sport at the age of only 24. The youngest player to ever hit 40+ points in a playoff game, Edwards set a record for single-season three-pointers in 2024-25, when he hit 308 for the Timberwolves.
A 2024 Olympic gold medal winner with the USA, Edwards looks set to have a bright future – and Jake could well regret calling Ant-Man overrated in years to come.
Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez
Four-weight boxing world champion
Paul has been outspoken about how little regard he has for the abilities of Canelo in the past – and so it’s no shock to see his name here.
The pair were reportedly set to fight in May of last year, before the Mexican hero pulled out to sign a multi-bout agreement under the Riyadh Season banner. Saudi Arabian boxing boss Turki Alalshikh insists he has no interest in making the fight, but it remains to be seen if Paul and Alvarez will ever settle their differences in the ring.
Tua Tagovailoa
Atlanta Falcons quarterback
Paul is clearly not a fan of NFL quarterbacks! This time, Atlanta Falcons’ Tagovailoa is in the firing line. The 28-year-old has consistently shown promise when on the field, and was listed by his fellow players as being one of the top 100 NFL stars in 2023. Unfortunately for Tagovailoa, he has had a number of injury problems, including a lengthy injury due to a concussion that he picked up in a collision on the field.
Anthony Joshua
Former two-time world heavyweight champion
Possibly the most ambitious call-out of Paul’s outlandish boxing career, the social media sensation continually insisted that he would get the better of AJ if the two ever shared the ring. As we know now, that was, to no surprise, cap, as Paul was battered and bruised by Joshua in a very comfortable knockout victory back in December 2025.
However, with Paul picking his 10 most overrated athletes of all time before sharing the ring with Joshua, maybe he’s changed his mind since… we doubt it though!

Man Utd Make Contact to Sign Bargain £22m Midfielder
It is no secret that Manchester United are in the market for midfielders in the summer transfer window.
United have already completed a deal to sign Ederson from Atalanta in a £38million move, with just the official confirmation still to come.
But the Red Devils have always maintained that they want to complete two deals in the middle of the park and that may become three if Manuel Ugarte is sold during the transfer window too.
United have been linked with a host of names already this summer. Elliot Anderson was the number one priority, but United have dropped out of the race to sign the Nottingham Forest midfielder, due to the huge financial package it would take to sign him.
Big names have been linked with Manchester United move
They also did not want to enter into a bidding war with rivals Manchester City, who have already seen two bids of more than £100million knocked back by Evangelos Marinakis.
Aurelien Tchouameni, Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes have all been heavily linked, but all would take a hefty pay packet to get done too.
That may lead to United turning to alternative options and one has emerged in the form of Marc Casado.
The 22-year-old is still trying to find his feet at the Camp Nou, making 34 appearances in all competitions for Barcelona last season, albeit only 15 as a starter in Hansi Flick’s La Liga title-winning side.
Casado had made 29 starts in the previous campaign and was linked with a move away from the Catalan giants then too. Flick said last year: “I spoke with Marc Casado, I don’t see him wanting to leave the team, nor do I think I want that either. The season is long, and we want to achieve everything.”

It remains to be seen whether Flick’s or Casado’s stance has changed in a year, but Mundo Deportivo claims that United have already made contact over a move to sign the defensive midfielder this summer.
United have made enquiries with the player’s agent Jorge Mendes over a move to Old Trafford this summer, and with a £22million price tag on his shoulders, would come considerably cheaper than some of their alternatives.
In an analytical piece on the player back in 2024, Breaking the Lines called him a La Masia gem and said: “With a rare mix of technique and stamina, Casado has the potential to dominate the center of the pitch for Barcelona for years to come. As he keeps growing and improving his skills, there’s no doubt he is destined to become a key midfielder for Barcelona and can be one of the best defensive midfielders in the world.”
High praise indeed and it may be that he has to move to a different club to prove it.

Liverpool Add Brighton Star Yankuba Minteh to Transfer Shortlist
Liverpool have added Brighton and Hove Albion winger Yankuba Minteh to their transfer shortlist as a back-up option if they are unable to agree a deal for top winger target Yan Diomande, according to GIVEMESPORT senior correspondent Ben Jacobs.
After announcing Andoni Iraola as Arne Slot’s replacement at the start of the month, Liverpool have sprung into action in the transfer market and agreed a deal to sign Osasuna winger Victor Munoz out of nowhere on Wednesday night.
The Reds have beaten Premier League rivals Newcastle United to the signature of the Spain international, who is currently representing his country at the 2026 World Cup and has already completed a medical in America.
The Merseyside outfit have identified the wide positions as a key area they need to strengthen in this summer transfer window, with two new players expected to arrive.
The transfer plan is of little surprise given the Reds are losing Mohamed Salah, while Hugo Ekitike remains sidelined with a serious long-term injury.
The left-sided Munoz is set to be the first through the door at Anfield, but now club chiefs want to sign Salah’s long-term successor too.
Jacobs: Liverpool Add Minteh to Transfer Shortlist
Liverpool are working hard on a deal to sign RB Leipzig sensation Yan Diomande, who they have identified as the top target to replace Salah.
The 19-year-old enjoyed a stunning breakthrough campaign for the Bundesliga club, and he has carried his club form into the World Cup by winning the man of the match award in his first-ever appearance at the tournament as the Ivory Coast beat Ecuador.
While Diomande and Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola are near the top of the club’s wishlist, there are other names on there too, as revealed by Jacobs on the latest episode of GIVEMESPORT’s Market Madness podcast.
He said: “Diomande is the preference. Diomande is the one that Liverpool are working on, and it could develop as a consequence, but if it isn’t to be Diomande, I can give you some other targets.
“One, as we’ve known for quite some time, is Bradley Barcola and PSG, if they win the race for Yan Diomande, may suddenly become open to selling Barcola, even though, as of now, their stance is basically not for sale. But it’s not impossible if another player comes in that PSG’s perspective changes.
“Then there are some new names I can give you on the Liverpool shortlist as well. Said El Mala is one at Koln, Brighton’s Yankuba Minteh is another, and Lillle’s Matias Fernandez-Pardo is a third name. All three of those players are also on Liverpool’s radar and have been discussed and presented to new manager Andoni Iraola.”

Pace is Key for Liverpool and Iraola
There is one thing that all of these key targets have in common, and it is their explosive pace.
Minteh has been recorded as one of the top 10 fastest players in the Premier League previously, and Dutch football writer Lentin Goodijk has described him as being ‘lightning quick’.
While Liverpool and Iraola have some good technical forwards to pick from right now, the Spaniard obviously feels that he wants to add some real speed to his attacking options as they look to significantly improve on their performances this season.
Whether it be Diomande, Minteh or any of the other names on the shortlist, Liverpool’s plan is clear.

Tottenham Braced For £100m Transfer Hijack
Tottenham are bracing themselves for their transfer move to sign Sandro Tonali this summer to be hijacked by Manchester City.
Spurs have been one of the busier clubs already this summer, bringing in two new players on free transfers, as well as agreeing a deal for another.
Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson will link up with the Lilywhites from Bournemouth and Liverpool respectively after their World Cup adventures with Argentina and Scotland are over, while Jan Paul van Hecke looks set to arrive in a £52million deal from Brighton & Hove Albion.
Lewis Family vowed to invest in the Tottenham squad
Roberto De Zerbi and Spurs already mean business in the summer transfer window, with the Lewis Family vowing to back the Italian with investment into the squad.
GIVEMESPORT understands that the Spurs owners want to make a statement signing this summer and there are talks ongoing over a deal to bring Savinho to the club from Manchester City.
But any move for the forward would be surpassed by a transfer for Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali. Spurs burst to the front of the queue to sign the 26-year-old earlier this week when news emerged of a planned £80million to £85million move for the Italian.
Newcastle want in the region of £100million to sell the midfielder and there is a feeling around St James’ Park that he will depart the club this summer.
Tottenham are keen to get a deal over the line for Tonali to strengthen the middle of the park, with reports surfacing that the player is keen on the move to north London too.

But Spurs are not the only club interested in signing him this summer. Manchester United have been linked with a move, given their plan to sign two central midfielders this summer. Arsenal were linked in January, although a move never came to fruition and the Gunners could make another move this time around.
And then there’s Manchester City, who lost Bernardo Silva this week and could well say goodbye to Rodri too, with question marks over his future at the Etihad Stadium.
Man City aiming to bring in two midfielders this summer
City’s attention for now, is on signing Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest, with two bids of more than £100million already rejected by owner Evangelos Marinakis.
Any suggestion that City are only planning for one midfield arrival appear to be wide of the mark, however. GMS understands that City, like Spurs, are in talks to sign Tonali and Teamtalk reporter Graeme Bailey has gone even further in saying: “I am told City made it clear during the process that they don’t see Tonali as some sort of alternative to Elliot Anderson – ideally they want both.”
Teamtalk also state that the Etihad Stadium would be his preference upon leaving St James’ Park this summer, if he cannot make the move to Serie A – an opportunity that has been removed because of the finances.
Tottenham may have thought they would have it all their own way in the race to sign Tonali with United put off by the price, City going all out for Anderson and Arsenal appearing to move for Manu Kone, but they may face a battle to complete the £100million deal after all.
