Newcastle Make Contact to Sign Folarin Balogun for Eddie Howe
Newcastle United are now said to be ahead of Aston Villa in the queue to sign a former Premier League frontman who is impressing at the World Cup. The Magpies are in need of more quality this summer after a disappointing season that saw them finish firmly in the bottom half.
Eddie Howe will be hugely frustrated by the season just gone, and he knows his bosses are not going to put up with another campaign of that nature. Fortunately for the Magpies boss, he is set to be backed in the summer transfer window, and the Toon Army should have money to spend, given the wealth of their owners and the sale of Anthony Gordon, which will appease the Profit and Sustainability overlords.
Newcastle have the edge in striker race
According to Jeunes Footeux, Newcastle are ‘very interested’ in signing AS Monaco striker Folarin Balogun, who has been impressing so far at this summer’s World Cup, and have made contact over a potential deal. Balogun has been with Monaco since leaving Arsenal in 2023, going on to scored 24 goals in 72 league appearances to date.
The forward, described as being “a proven goalscorer at the highest level”, was born in New York before he and his mother returned to England to live. He has scored two and provided an assist in his first two World Cup games with USMNT this summer. With Christian Pulisic dealing with an injury early in the competition, Balogun has been his nation’s standout star so far.
Wayne Rooney said during a BBC Sport broadcast recently: “He has pace, he has power, this is about Balogun, his directness, his rawness and his ability to drive with the ball.”
Olivier Giroud added: “He’s doing really well, he’s scored 19 goals this year with Monaco, full of confidence, a lot of composure. He’s really available for his teammates, he’s not just standing up front, he does a lot of movement, can run in behind, he can hold the ball. He has a really good connection with Ricardo Pepi also. I’m enjoying seeing him play and I hope he will score more goals,”
Newcastle face obstacles in completing a deal
His form has perhaps played a part in Newcastle rekindling interest from April, and the report claims the Magpies have already been in touch with Monaco over a possible deal. It’s claimed Monaco won’t sell for less than £43million, or 50million euros, and that does put Newcastle in an awkward position because of the strikers they currently have at the club.
In fact, it’s claimed the Magpies would have to offload Yoane Wissa, who only joined last summer, before pressing ahead with a Balogun deal. Meanwhile, Aston Villa, who can offer Champions League football, are said to be monitoring the situation, but they have not made their move yet.
Newcastle Open Talks to Sign £265,000-a-Week Arsenal Star
Newcastle are on the hunt for new forwards, and have seemingly made contact to sign an Arsenal star this summer.

Canada Now Facing Nightmare Route to World Cup Final After Switzerland Defeat
Canada are now facing a very tough route to the 2026 World Cup final after suffering a defeat to Switzerland in their match on Wednesday afternoon.
Jesse Marsch’s side went into the match in pole position in Group B and knowing that a point against the European side in Vancouver would be enough to see them clinch top spot.
However, Canada were not able to get the result they needed as they lost 2-1. Switzerland took a two-goal lead early in the second half courtesy of goals from Ruben Vargas and Johan Manzambi.
Promise David pulled one back with 14 minutes remaining but, despite their best efforts, they were unable to find an equaliser as Switzerland took all three points.
Canada’s Route to the 2026 World Cup Final
If Canada won their group, they would have played their last 32 match in front of their own fans at the Vancouver Stadium. That would have been a huge boost for Canada, but Switzerland will now have that privilege.
Instead, Canada will travel to Los Angeles to contest their first knockout match on Sunday, June 28. They will face the team that finishes second place in Group A: at the moment, that is South Korea. Their other potential opponents are Czechia or South Africa. Canada will fancy their chances, whoever they play.
It gets really tough for them in the last 16 and beyond, though.
As things stand, if they win their last 32 match, they will face either the Netherlands or Morocco. Both teams have been very impressive in the tournament thus far.
A possible quarter-final tie against France or Germany awaits. In the semi-finals, they could face Portugal or Spain. If they make it all the way to the final, they could play either Argentina, England or Brazil.
The bracket is not yet set, and their possible opponents are set to change. However, they would have definitely preferred to have topped the group.

Jesse Marsch Speaks Out After Canada 1-2 Switzerland
Marsch reflected on his side’s performance after the match. He said on ITV Sport:
“I know our team has heart. I know that we have a group that will give everything at every moment. And that’s something to be very proud of. And just the managing the little moments, given the start of the game I thought we were a little tentative and not really aggressive and not really sprinting enough. But, we’re going to focus on the positives, we’re going to focus on the response.
“Again, good performances off the bench. The only thing I wish I would have done differently, I was thinking about going five-at-the-back to really lock things down at half-time, and when we came out like that, then obviously I wish I would have done that. I think I should have done that.”
When asked about Canada’s crowds, Marsch replied: “It’s been awesome. And that’s the disappointment. We just want to continue the energy that’s taken place here in Canada.
“You know, I’ve been through these World Cups and I’ve been through different big moments in my career. And I know when you get one big win, building on that is so important. And so, I’m disappointed we weren’t able to get the win or draw today to keep us here.
“I’m so thankful for the energy and the country, and certainly in the stadium here today, but we’re going to go to LA. It’s probably going to be an away crowd, it’s going to be a little tougher, but we still want to electrify our country and play really well down there and go after it still.
“We’re exactly where we want to be, we finished second in the group, we’re in the knockout phase, and now let’s go for it.”

Derek McInnes Wants Rangers Reunion With Lewis Ferguson
Rangers boss Derek McInnes is eyeing up another potential reunion in the summer transfer window, as TeamTalk reports of one target on the club’s radar this summer.
It comes after a raft of changes have already taken place at Ibrox, with Danny Rohl’s exit to RB Salzburg making way for a switch in the dugout.
In the end, Rangers approached Hearts to land McInnes, who reunited with striker Lawrence Shankland after he made a move to his boyhood club from The Jambos.
The rebuild continues for the Glaswegian side, and the next player on the radar could bring about another reunion with the manager.
Rangers Want Lewis Ferguson Deal
The midfield appears to be next on the agenda for Rangers, as Nicolas Raskin appears to be edging closer towards the exit door at Ibrox this summer.
A potential replacement on the cards appears to be Scotland star Lewis Ferguson, as TeamTalk reports of two potential deals between Rangers and Bologna this summer.
The report claims that the Serie A side are keen on landing Raskin, while a reunion between Ferguson and McInnes could be on the cards with a move in the other direction.
As things stand, Bologna aren’t keen to sell the 26-year-old, meaning that any discussion is unlikely to be a swap deal and talks will be centred on the moves being separate.
However, it’s claimed that Ferguson is keen to speak with the club about a potential switch, which would see him join the team he supported growing up.
Any deal for either midfielder in each direction will be dependent on talks in the coming weeks, which are likely to ramp up after the conclusion of the World Cup campaign for both stars.
It remains to be seen whether Rangers can land their man, in what would be a huge swoop for the side in bolstering the options available to McInnes.

Lewis Ferguson’s Record Under Derek McInnes
A move for Ferguson would be quite the coup for Rangers, adding a key Scotland star to the midfield ahead of the peak years of his career.
The 26-year-old is someone McInnes knows well, bringing him through at Aberdeen before he eventually made the switch to Bologna in Serie A.
Ferguson made 115 appearances for the head coach in their time together, scoring 20 goals and assisting 22 times to make himself an in-demand star.
Rangers Set to Make Offer to Sign ‘Exceptional’ Star as Portsmouth Ready Move
Rangers are ready to make a bid.
His 135 appearances for Bologna since, which have been accompanied by 15 goals and six assists, have resulted in him becoming an important player, even taking the armband on some occasions.
A move for the midfielder would represent value for a player who can bring some important leadership qualities with both the standards his sets, and the quality he possesses.
With a return to the top of the Scottish Premiership on their mind, the Rangers board would show a huge sign of faith in the new manager with such a move.

Bastian Schweinsteiger Sparks Outrage With Comments Ahead of Germany v Ivory Coast
Bastian Schweinsteiger has come under fire for comments he made ahead of Germany’s 2-1 victory over the Ivory Coast at the 2026 World Cup.
Germany were the favourites to win their match against the African side at Toronto Stadium. However, Ivory Coast led 1-0 with 25 minutes remaining courtesy of Franck Kessie’s opener.
Julian Nagelsmann sent on Deniz Undav in the hope that he could turn the game on its head, and that’s exactly what he did.
The 29-year-old levelled proceedings in the 68th minute before giving his side the victory when he netted his second in the fourth minute of stoppage-time.
Schweinsteiger, who is covering the tournament as pundit for the German public broadcaster ARD, sparked backlash with his comments ahead of the game.
Ahead of the match, Schweinsteiger praised Ivory Coast as he talked about how athletic they are. He then described the Elephants’ style of play as ‘African football’, adding that it was ‘sometimes unorthodox, a bit wild, and not quite as tactical.’
According to French publication L’Equipe, the word ‘wild’ has sparked outrage in Germany due to its racist and colonialist connotations .
Among those on social media that have slammed Schweinsteiger is X user Jonas Di Andrade, who said his comments were ‘disgusting’ and ‘revolting’, added that they ‘show remnants of an old European mindset that is definitely racist.’
Schweinsteiger has not yet spoken out amid the backlash, while he has also not been sanctioned by his employers, ARD.
He was very complimentary of Ivory Coast following the game, saying on X that they were, as expected, a ‘tough opponent and showed their technical quality and physicality.’

Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is also commentating on this summer’s World Cup for German TV. The 59-year-old was not impressed at all when he was asked about Schweinsteiger’s comments.
While the reporter was asking him to give his thoughts on the controversy, Klopp interrupted: “And now you want to carry on this subject. I have no chance. I have no chance to answer this question.
“Everybody likes it, so you bring me into this situation. It’s not my job that everyone likes it. But this is a serious subject. And I don’t even know what is appropriate to say.
“For African people it’s one thing. For other people it’s another thing. Thank god I thought nobody asked me about that. You found a moment.”
Klopp sarcastically added: “And surprisingly, you are German! That surprised me so much! Thank you very much,” before walking away.
Germany have already secured top spot in Group E. They play their third and final group match against Ecuador on Thursday, June 25. They will contest their last 32 match at Boston Stadium on Monday, June 29. Their opponents are not yet known.
