Zinedine Zidane Called England Legend ‘the Best in the World’

Published

on

Zinedine Zidane has every right to be considered the greatest midfielder football has ever seen. The France and Real Madrid legend was elegance personified at his absolute best, winning every major team honour available to him, as well as claiming the highly-prized Ballon d’Or in 1998.

His achievements for club and country have secured his place among football’s immortals, with the two-footed sensation leaving a lasting mark on the global game. Virtually every midfielder who ever crossed paths with him held him in huge esteem. Because of his standing in the sport, praise from Zidane carries enormous weight whenever he chooses to speak glowingly about another player.

That was exactly the case when Zidane described one of England’s finest talents as ‘the best in the world’ back in 2009. Making the compliment even more striking, two of football’s all-time greats – Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo – were already operating at an extraordinary level at that point.

Zinedine Zidane Believed England Star Was Better Than Messi & Ronaldo

Zidane was referring to Liverpool icon, Steven Gerrard. The all-action midfielder was outstanding as the Reds eliminated Zidane’s former side Real Madrid from the Champions League 5-0 on aggregate in 2009. Later that year, the French great hailed the England international as the best on the planet:

“Is he the best in the world? He might not get the attention of [Lionel] Messi and Ronaldo but, yes, I think he just might be.”

Zidane’s Response to Ferguson Saying Gerrard Wasn’t a ‘Top, Top Player’

Zinedine Zidane had to respond after hearing Sir Alex Ferguson’s surprising comments about Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard.

Ronaldo had won football’s biggest individual honour – the Ballon d’Or – the previous year, while Messi went on to collect the prize in 2009. The pair were just beginning a rivalry that would see them battle to be recognised as the greatest player ever for more than a decade, but Zidane still put Gerrard above them, adding:

“If you don’t have a player like Steven Gerrard, who is the engine room, it can affect the whole team.

“When we were winning league titles and European Cups at Real, I always said Claude Makelele was our most important player. There is no way myself, [Luis] Figo or Raúl would have been able to do what we did without Claude and the same goes for Liverpool and Gerrard.”

Expanding on the qualities Gerrard brought to the club he grew up supporting, Zizou added: “He has great passing ability, can tackle and scores goals, but most importantly, he gives the players around him confidence and belief. You can’t learn that – players like him are just born with that presence.”

Gerrard’s Reaction to Zidane’s ‘Best in the World’ Praise

Years after Zidane first delivered that compliment, Gerrard was asked about it during an interview with Rio Ferdinand. When asked if he knew who had said those words about him, he immediately replied: “Zidane, because I’ve read that quote about a million times.

“He’s actually done me a nice message in a book that was given to me as a farewell present. He’s on page one and that message is on page one from him.

“I’m very flattered, and I’m very humbled for him to say that.”

The admiration between the two iconic midfielders is obvious. There was even a possibility that they could have played together at Real Madrid, had Gerrard not remained fiercely loyal to Liverpool during a career that eventually saw him make more than 700 appearances in the famous red shirt.

Liverpool Told Arsenal Lead Race For £116m Superstar

Published

Liverpool could miss out on Bradley Barcola if Arsenal make a concrete move for the Paris Saint-Germain winger this summer, according to Daily Mail journalist Lewis Steele.

Barcola has emerged as Andoni Iraola’s top target as the club look to replace Mohamed Salah. The Frenchman’s club future has been thrown into doubt after Yan Diomande made a move to the Parc des Princes his priority.

Liverpool cooled interest in Diomande after learning of his preference and Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Barcola is the Reds’ first-choice alternative. He’s enjoying a superb World Cup campaign with France following an impressive season with PSG.

Why Barcola might prefer Arsenal over Liverpool

While Liverpool have placed Barcola at the top of their wishlist, they may face competition from Arsenal for his signature. The Frenchman has been on Mikel Arteta’s radar since the transfer window opened and the Gunners apparently hold an advantage.

Steele gave an update on Barcola’s situation and suggested that a move to the Emirates is more appealing. He told Anfield Index: “It’s going to be very, very hard for Liverpool to get Barcola. He’s probably looking at Arteta. He might want to live in the capital city of London. Liverpool aren’t as glamorous an option as they may have been 12 months ago.”

Barcola helped PSG win the Champions League for the second consecutive season and put in excellent displays throughout. He appeared 49 times across competitions for Luis Enrique’s Parisians, registering 13 goals and seven assists.

That said, the 23-year-old isn’t an undisputed starter given the star-studded attacking options at the French capital club. Should the Ligue 1 champions swoop for Diomande, it will likely be Barcola who makes way.

The issue Arsenal and Liverpool both face is that PSG are reportedly demanding £116m. He has two years left on his contract but the Parisians want a huge fee for their French winger.

Liverpool fans will undoubtedly feel that the club still has enough pull to entice the likes of Barcola to head to Anfield. While Diomande preferred a move to PSG, it came down to the chance to play under Enrique, whom he feels gives him a better chance of winning the dream Ballon d’Or.

There’s no certainty that Arsenal will move for the attacker, as they are also exploring other options, including Juventus’ Kenan Yildiz. The North Londoners are reportedly open to selling Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli, paving the way for a new winger to arrive.

Iraola and his transfer chiefs need to quickly find out Barcola’s stance on a move before getting dragged into another lengthy transfer saga. He’d be a perfect addition to the squad and help deal with Salah’s exit.

Newcastle Eye Lesley Ugochukwu as Tonali Replacement

Newcastle United have learned how much it will cost to sign Burnley midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu, according to Chronicle Live.

The Magpies are in the market for new midfielders ahead of Sandro Tonali’s impending move to Tottenham Hotspur. A whooping £100m deal will take the Italian from Tyneside to North London.

Switzerland’s World Cup standout, Johan Manzambi, is among the names on Eddie Howe’s shortlist of potential Tonali replacements. They also appear to admire Burnley’s Ugochukwu, who is expected to depart following the Clarets’ relegation.

Newcastle want Burnley’s Ugochukwu

The report claims that Newcastle are linked with Ugochukwu, but Turkish giants Galatasaray have made a proposal for the former Chelsea man. He could be on the move for £24 million, which is a decent fee for a player with Premier League experience.

Ugochukwu joined Burnley from Chelsea last August in a £25m deal, making him the club’s record signing. He appeared 38 times for the Clarets, registering three goals and two assists.

There were huge expectations of the 22-year-old when he arrived in England back in August 2023. As is the case with most youth signings who head to Stamford Bridge, he had few first-team opportunities to showcase his abilities.

Ugochukwu, dubbed “fantastic”, got that chance at Turf Moor, and he was one of only a few players who impressed for the Lancashire outfit. He’ll undoubtedly not want to be playing EFL Championship football at this stage of his career.

Howe needs Ugochukwu and Manzambi

There is a real opportunity for Newcastle to sign a young holding midfielder with plenty of promise. While he failed to win over Chelsea and endured a disappointing loan spell at Southampton, he earned plenty of praise at Burnley.

The Magpies are no longer in the market for marquee signings and are instead targeting young players who can develop into top talent. The French midfielder may view a move to St James’ Park as a perfect place for him to grow and live up to his potential.

What the Tyneside outfit mustn’t do is view Ugochukwu as a direct replacement for Tonali. Ideally, Howe looks at signing both the Frenchman and Manzambi to add two new options in a much-needed midfield refresh.

The same report claims that the club are also eyeing AS Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara. It’s a good sign that the Magpies are weighing up several options rather than making a knee-jerk signing.

Supercomputer Predicts Entire F1 Race After Qualifying

Published

A packed summer of British sport is already in full swing, and a record crowd is expected to descend on Silverstone this weekend for the British Grand Prix, with a supercomputer now weighing in on its prediction for the full race at the iconic circuit.

Much has changed since last year’s dramatic edition, which was won by Lando Norris after title rival Oscar Piastri picked up a 10-second penalty for erratic braking behind the safety car, while Nico Hülkenberg stunned the Formula One world by claiming a surprise podium in a chaotic thriller.

This time around, Norris lines up sixth on the grid after a below-par qualifying session, with early forecasts suggesting he may struggle to repeat last year’s triumph. Meanwhile, George Russell, fresh off his Austrian GP victory and long hoping for a home win, has also been tipped by AI predictions to miss out on a podium finish, despite being the bookmakers’ second favourite.

Liam Lawson, who drives for Racing Bulls, put in a best lap of 1:28.927 in Q3, lining him up just one place outside the points for the sprint at Silverstone. He is expected to remain there throughout the race as the Kiwi’s good form continues to build a head of steam.

Finishing one place above his teammate is Arvid Lindbland. The Swedish-British driver could not contain his excitement heading into this weekend as he prepares for his first-ever Silverstone race as an F1 star, and a ninth-placed finish would be an achievement in itself for the 18-year-old, as he currently sits 13 in the overall standings.

Isack Hadjar

Isack Hadjar

For a third race in a row, the Supercomputer has predicted Isack Hadjar to finish in eighth. After finishing sixth in Spain, the Frenchman will be looking to carry on a pretty solid job for Red Bull this season. After so many years of struggles with their second driver, this would be Hadjar’s fifth consecutive points finish since his retirement from the Miami Grand Prix at the start of May, so many would say a pretty successful run, despite it meaning he will drop three places from his position on the starting grid.

7

Oscar Piastri

McLaren

Oscar Piastri

Oscar Piastri will be disappointed after finishing eighth during qualifying, but he is expected to make up a tiny bit of ground, as McLaren’s secondary driver is tipped to finish one place higher and in seventh. Heading into the weekend, a lot has been made about his and Lando Norris’ cars looking ‘slow’, and the slump continues.

6

Max Verstappen

Red Bull

Max Verstappen could only claim seventh on the grid at Silverstone, with his Red Bull team-mate Isack Hadjar more than a tenth faster in fifth. He once again criticised Red Bull, saying that “there’s no point competing” if they can’t sort out their top-speed issue. As things stand, it doesn’t seem the flying Dutchman’s head is in it, and that’s expected to stay unsolved until the season reaches its conclusion.

Amid the chaos of a wet and wild 2025 British Grand Prix, Norris produced a coming-of-age performance that would ultimately propel him on to becoming world champion. Northamptonshire won’t provide him with a podium finish this year, however, should AI’s predictions of a fifth-placed finish come true.

4

George Russell

Mercedes

George Russell has developed into one of Britain’s darlings of motorsport in recent years, and with four podium finishes already this season, he is Kimi Antonelli’s closest rival to become world champion. But he too has been denied a podium in Silverstone this weekend, meaning he will not finally end his hoodoo on a track he’s so desperate to win on.

3

Lewis Hamilton

Ferrari

Lewis Hamilton will be hoping to continue his incredible record of success in front of his home crowd at this weekend’s British Grand Prix, with the seven-time World Champion having already scored nine victories around Silverstone. He’s not the elite level he used to be, but a third-placed finish is certainly still a success for the Ferrari driver.

2

Charles Leclerc

In what is expected to be a huge clash between Ferrari and Mercedes this weekend, Hamilton has claimed him and Charles Leclerc will need to work together in order to stand a chance at beating current champion-elect Kimi Antonelli. AI believes that won’t be enough, but second and third is still good going as they maintain their places in the front row on the grid.

19-year-old Kimi Antonelli, who leads the world championship and won the sprint race on Saturday morning, had almost two-tenths on Charles Leclerc in second and three-tenths on Hamilton in third. It’s no wonder he’s predicted to win his seventh race in 11 this season, with some forecasting it to be a demolition job.
