Donald Trump ‘Didn’t Know’ What a Red Card Was Before World Cup

Published

on

Donald Trump has displayed his level of knowledge when it comes to the rules of football with a bizarre rant in the wake of the controversy surrounding Folarin Balogun’s suspended red card for the USA.

The President confirmed on Monday afternoon that he did make a call to FIFA boss Gianni Infantino to ask for a review of the incident, which saw the USMNT striker dismissed against Bosnia & Herzegovina in the previous round.

An independent committee eventually ruled that Balogun’s ban would be suspended until next year, a decision that sparked outrage among football fans for the precedent it set. Trump’s involvement and close relationship with Infantino also came under the spotlight as a result.

Trump explained his reasoning for getting on the phone with Infantino at the White House when addressing the press. The 80-year-old claimed he didn’t believe it was a foul and asked for a review for that reason.

He said: “All I did was I asked for a review because I didn’t think it was a foul. Again, I’m good at this stuff. I didn’t think it was a foul. I thought it was two great athletes who crashed into each other and got entangled. That was not a guy punching somebody in the face or anything that would be different.”

The Swede is ‘happy’ for the USA.

He then went on to explain he couldn’t tell FIFA what to do, despite seemingly giving them a nudge in a certain direction. But he still made a case for the best players always being allowed to play, regardless of what took place in their previous outing.

Citing Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Harry Kane in his lengthy rant, Trump continued:

“If they wouldn’t allow a top player, maybe among the best players on the team, to play, I think it would have had a big stain and I related just that feeling. I didn’t tell them what to do. I can’t tell them what to do. I don’t believe he [Infantino] made the decision.

“I think it was a committee that made the decision, and they made the right decision because, number one, it wasn’t a foul, and you want to see a game with your best players. How would you feel if you took [Lionel] Messi, or [Cristiano] Ronaldo or Harry Kane out? You can’t do that.”

“We gotta have our best players. We gotta have our best and they gotta have their best. And if we win or we lose, it’s fair,” he added.

The main reason behind this stance is that the President had no clue what a red card meant in football, or the ramifications. He admitted: “I didn’t know what the hell a red card was. When I found out, I said, ‘You gotta be kidding!'” Watch his full rant below.

Man Utd Withdraw from Race for Mexican Teenager Gilberto Mora

Manchester United have pulled out of yet another race during the summer transfer window.

The Red Devils have been in the market for a host of different players over the last few weeks, but they have been struggling to get deals over the line.

Elliot Anderson recently signed for Manchester City, while Mateus Fernandes joined Tottenham Hotspur, and they were two key targets for the Manchester club.

The lack of signings could be a concern for United supporters, especially as they are losing out to some of their rival clubs.

Missing out on signings to a club like Tottenham, with all due respect, will be a huge blow for United. Spurs are without any European football this season, but players are still picking Tottenham over them, perhaps due to financial reasons.

According to a report from Team Talk, Manchester United have now withdrawn from the race to sign Mexican youngster Gilberto Mora in the summer transfer window.

A number of clubs are showing an interest in the 17-year-old star this summer, and United have reportedly been tracking him for six months.

The report claims that United have withdrawn from entering the bidding due to the potential cost of a deal and the level of interest from other clubs.

It’s claimed that the valuation of Mora is set to exceed £34m, but with clubs such as Liverpool, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, AC Milan, Ajax, Manchester City, and Arsenal all linked with a move, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see that value increase.

As mentioned, United supporters must be getting frustrated with the lack of business they’ve been doing over the last few weeks.

Missing out on key targets is a huge blow, and they need to get deals over the line if they want to compete on all fronts next season.

The Manchester club qualified for Champions League football, meaning they need a deeper and more competitive squad in order to flourish.

With Casemiro departing and Manuel Ugarte suffering a serious injury, United undoubtedly need to bring in new midfielders in the coming weeks and months.

Man Utd Hold Talks to Seal £100m Double Deal for Tyler Adams and Andrey Santos

Manchester United are stepping up their interest in strengthening their midfield options this summer, with Jason Wilcox leading the charge.

The Red Devils missed out on top targets Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes this summer, with the Englishman moving to Man City for £116m, while the Portuguese star joined Tottenham Hotspur for £85m too, after United refused to match those prices.

That has led the club to begin looking at potential alternative options, and it has now emerged that they are in talks about a £100m double deal for MIchael Carrick’s side.

According to TEAMtalk, Man Utd are eyeing up a deal to sign Chelsea star Andrey Santos this summer after missing out on Fernandes and Anderson.

The Brazil international enjoyed a phenomenal season on loan with Strasbourg in 2024/25, but struggled for regular first-team minutes at Chelsea last season as he found himself behind Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez and even Reece James in the midfield pecking order.

United have held talks with the player’s reps about a potential move to Old Trafford, and it’s understood that Chelsea are open to allowing him to leave for a fee of around £50m.

Alongside Santos, though, Man Utd are also eyeing another midfielder signing, and it has emerged that Bournemouth star Tyler Adams has emerged as a serious target for the club.

The American was brought up in talks between the clubs as United expressed an interest in Alex Scott, and have been informed that the Cherries would be open to a sale for around £50m.

United like his leadership and defensive qualities, and their data-led approach has seen him figure high up on their shortlist of targets.

Man Utd Targets Are Underwhelming

Tyler Adams

United have made it abundantly clear that they want to rebuild their midfield this summer, and that has led to inflated prices when it comes to them finding targets.

Santos is top young talent who has been on the shortlist at Old Trafford for a while, and with Ederson already arriving too, despite reports the deal has collapsed, there is plenty of defensive quality there.

That should see the next midfield signing be on the more offensive side of things, but Adams would be adding even more defensive qualities to a side that needs to be able to progress play forward and have cover for Kobbie Mainoo.

Fans are underwhelmed by the latest round of links after missing out on their top targets, and it makes sense. United must find a way to get the right deals over the line, not just any midfield signings, if they want to get back to competing at the top level.

Tottenham Offered Chance to Sign Dusan Vlahovic

Tottenham Hotspur have been offered the chance to sign a top star this summer alongside their pursuit of Bournemouth star Eli Junior Kroupi.

Spurs have completed six signings already this summer, bringing in Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, Martin Dubravka, Jan Paul van Hecke, Mateus Fernandes, and Sandro Tonali in deals worth in excess of £220m.

But the Lilywhites are still looking at other deals, with a mega offer being lined up to sign Kroupi despite Bournemouth not wanting to sell. However, the north London side are now looking at other forward options, which has seen them offered the chance to sign a household name.

Tottenham Offered Dusan Vlahovic

According to TEAMtalk, Tottenham have been offered the chance to sign former Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic on a free transfer.

Vlahovic, who has been described as ‘one of the best strikers in the world’, recently left the Serie A giants after his contract expired, and is now searching for a new club, ideally in the Premier League.

The 26-year-old is attracting big interest from Turkish giants Besiktas, but Spurs are understood to be keeping a close eye on the situation as they assess their own forward options for the new season. Richarlison is expected to depart, while Randal Kolo Muani has left following the end of his loan spell.

Kroupi remains the club’s top target for the striker role, which could see any move for Vlahovic put on the back burner as a result.

But with the Serbian international available on a free transfer, it’s a deal that could emerge as a bargain considering the major expenditure being put out by the ownership to strengthen other areas of the squad during this window.

Vlahovic Would Be Excellent Plan B

Dusan Vlahovic in action for Juventus

Dominic Solanke is currently the first-choice and only senior striker in the Spurs squad, but if De Zerbi is able to get his way and complete a deal to sign Kroupi, the expectation is that the Frenchman would be first choice.

Solanke would be excellent competition for him, and offer a different profile, but Vlahovic has got a much better goalscoring record throughout his career, and he is the type of profile who is a bit of a hybrid between them both.

The likelihood is that Vlahovic’s wages and the fact he wouldn’t be an automatic starter are going to be a hurdle that needs overcoming, but if Kroupi doesn’t arrive then it makes a deal much more feasible, and it’s one to keep an eye on while he remains unattached.
