Ian Wright Claims Argentina Winning Goal vs Egypt Should Have Been Disallowed

Published

Former Arsenal and England striker Ian Wright has explained why Argentina’s winning goal against Egypt should not have counted.

Argentina completed a remarkable comeback in their last 16 fixture to secure their place in the 2026 World Cup quarter-finals.

The reigning world champions found themselves on the verge of a shock elimination at the Atlanta Stadium after Mostafa Ziko put Egypt 2-0 up in the 67th minute.

However, two goals in four minutes from Cristian Romero and captain Lionel Messi, who leads the race for the Golden Boot award with eight goals this tournament, turned the game on its head.

Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez then sent the Argentina fans into raptures with the winning goal in stoppage-time.

Egypt’s players and coaching staff were furious, convinced they were the victims of a miscarriage of justice following a series of controversial decisions in the second half.

The Pharaohs had a 58th-minute goal disallowed following a foul on Lisandro Martinez at the opposite end of the pitch. They were also convinced they should have been awarded a penalty for a foul on Mohamed Salah moments before Fernandez netted the winner.

An emotional Ziko claimed the tournament was “rigged” in favour of Argentina after the match, while Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan was quoted saying:

“They want Argentina and Messi to stay in the World Cup for marketing.”

Ian Wright Casts Strong Verdict

Meanwhile, ITV Sport pundit Ian Wright offered his verdict on the late drama, arguing Argentina’s third and final goal should have been disallowed.

The 62-year-old believes referee Francois Letexier’s decision to disallow Egypt’s goal earlier in the second half set a precedent that meant Salah should have been awarded a penalty before Fernandez scored.

“That’s what happening with VAR now, they’re pulling it back,” Wright said.

“If you’re going to pull it back for Argentina on the edge of the box to disallow a goal, you have to pull it back for this one with Mo Salah.”

Wright added: “He’s been caught. Whatever we say, it might be minimal, he’s been caught and then they go up the other end.” Watch the clip below:

Wright’s former England teammate and Match of the Day colleague Alan Shearer appeared to be in agreement on X (Twitter). The Newcastle United legend tweeted:

“Either both are fouls or neither is a foul. But they’re not going to re-referee they told us.”

Argentina will now face Switzerland in the quarter-finals at the Kansas City Stadium on Saturday night (Sunday, 2am BST). The winners will play either England or Norway in the semi-finals on July 15, back at the Atlanta Stadium.

Thierry Henry and Alexi Lalas in Awkward Exchange Over FIFA’s Balogun Decision

Published

Thierry Henry and Alexi Lalas were involved in an awkward exchange over FIFA’s hugely controversial decision to suspend Folarin Balogun’s one-match ban ahead of the USMNT’s World Cup last 16 clash against Belgium.

Balogun was cleared to play by FIFA after US President Donald Trump intervened. UEFA described it as an “unprecedented, incomprehensible and unjustifiable” decision, while Belgium reportedly threatened to take legal action.

In the end, Balogun’s involvement failed to have the desired effect for the United States as Belgium secured an emphatic 4-1 victory at the Seattle Stadium.

Belgium couldn’t resist having a dig at the USA on Twitter in the aftermath of their last 16 triumph, while the players mocked Trump by copying his infamous dance moves shortly before full-time.

However, the fallout over FIFA’s decision rumbles on, with other competing national teams now considering similar appeals. England, for example, considered launching an appeal over Jarell Quansah’s red card against Mexico.

On FOX Sports, Henry and Lalas exchanged their views on the Balogun situation, and it resulted in a tense live TV stand-off.

Henry said: “What I said, I don’t think people understood, when I raised Article 27, that was sarcasm, I thought people would understand that, but they didn’t, so I’ll say it again: I do agree with the fact that it wasn’t a red, because if I was a player I wouldn’t have accepted that, I don’t agree with how they rescinded the red.

“What FIFA did wasn’t right, it was the right thing in terms of not giving the red. That should have been a decision on the field, not after three or four days, I didn’t agree with that at all.”

Lalas, who has been involved in several tense exchanges with fellow pundits Henry and Zlatan Ibrahimovic this summer, then interjected: “Why wasn’t it right?”

Henry replied: “Because it is not right. Article 27 doesn’t say that, that’s my opinion, what FIFA did, wasn’t right, it wasn’t a red, but what FIFA did, wasn’t right. It fired up Belgium. Look at the celebration, the dancing at the end, everything that was there. It wasn’t right.”

Lalas then brought up Cristiano Ronaldo’s suspension being overturned ahead of the World Cup finals: “So Ronaldo shouldn’t have played in the World Cup, either?”

Henry said: “No, you say whatever you want to say, I’m talking about the Balogun situation, let’s talk about Cristiano Ronaldo [after Portugal were eliminated from the World Cup by Spain].”

Lalas, who earned 96 caps for the United States between 1991-1998, wasn’t finished. He said: “Hold on, what’s not right about it?”

Henry maintained: “That’s my opinion.”

Lalas argued FIFA “didn’t break any rules or regulations” but Henry was beginning to lose his patience by this point. The legendary French forward added: “I said it, and I’ll say it again, the way it happened afterwards, I didn’t agree with it, that’s about it.”

The outspoken Lalas then added: “So, the right decision was come to by the wrong way also when it comes to Cristiano Ronaldo?”

Henry finished: “That’s on you to talk about. I’m talking about Balogun.”

Lalas, determined to have the final word, said: “My team’s out of the World Cup now, so it’s a completely different story.” Watch the awkward clip in full below:

Belgium will face Spain at the Los Angeles Stadium in the quarter-finals on Friday. If they pass that test, they will then face either France or Morocco in the semi-finals.

Novak Djokovic’s Cheeky Response After Being Compared to Lionel Messi

Published

Novak Djokovic had a rather cheeky reaction to comparisons made between him and football superstar Lionel Messi following a gruelling five-hour quarter-final victory over Felix Auger-Aliassime at Wimbledon late last night.

The five-set thriller lasted over five hours and now sees Djokovic take on defending champion Jannik Sinner in an eagerly anticipated semi-final on Friday afternoon.

Despite facing the adversity of a leg injury, the 39-year-old fought on as he continues his push towards claiming a 25th Grand Slam title. On the brink of another record, and still playing at the highest level, it’s hard to ignore the parallels between Djokovic and a certain magician in football.

Djokovic got the job done on Centre Court, but it didn’t come easily. For all five hours and 15 minutes, the two went back and forth, putting on a great spectacle for the packed-out crowd.

Meanwhile, at the same time, Lionel Messi was making his own headlines with an enthralling game over in America during the FIFA World Cup. The Inter Miami man helped guide Argentina to a comeback victory against Egypt, providing a goal and an assist along the way.

Messi now has another chance at making history, with Argentina looking to go back-to-back after they won the tournament back in 2022 in Qatar. They face Switzerland in the quarter-finals at the Kansas City Stadium, and could meet England in the semis if both are victorious in their respective quarters.

Novak Djokovic’s Response to Lionel Messi Comparison

The journalist started by saying: “Unbelievable how Messi is 39 years old and still scoring goals. And you win after 5 hours and 15 minutes.” To which Djokovic responded by saying: “I’d like to play 90 minutes like him, but…” (laughter).

The elusive 25th Grand Slam title has evaded Djokovic for a while now, having been tied with Margaret Court since the 2023 US Open. Could this be the year that it finally happens?

Picking up the victory over third-ranked Auger-Aliassime is already a statement, but there is no tougher test than Sinner. It’s a rematch of last year’s semi-final, where the Italian picked up the win, and ultimately went onto claim the trophy.

However, Djokovic did get one over Sinner at the Australian Open earlier this year. It’s another blockbuster clash, and it’s clear the 39-year-old is still more than good enough to compete at this level.

Following the quarter-final victory, the Serb said: “I won that match with a racket and a lot of heart. What can I say? These are the kind of moments I still play tennis for. I wish it was the final, so I don’t need to worry about how the body will feel tomorrow, but I’m happy that I won.”

Alasdair Gold says Bournemouth are blocking Junior Kroupi sale to Spurs

Tottenham are now said to be going after attackers as they look to continue their huge spending this summer. Spurs have already racked up a huge spending total this season, and a record total at that. Roberto De zerbi has been handed more than £230million to improve his squad, and there will be more money spent before the summer is out.

There will be some sales along the way, and Luka Vuskovic was the first to go, while Cristian Romero is likely to follow at some point this summer. But Tottenham’s spending will far outweigh their incomings, and especially after they add to their business with attacking recruits, which is the next step after the signings of Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes.

Tottenham’s next priority in the summer window is to sign a winger, with De Zerbi wanting another dangerous wideman and potentially another forward. A number of potential targets have been linked, including Manchester City’s winger Savinho and AFC Bournemouth’s forward Junior Kroupi.

Kroupi has scored 13 goals in 33 league appearances for Bournemouth, and he is now attracting attention from a number of clubs.

Spurs are said to be one of those interested, but according to journalist Alasdair Gold, Bournemouth are not likely to play ball.

“Junior Kroupi we know is a player of huge interest to a lot of clubs, not just Tottenham,” Gold said on his YouTube show. “He is a terrific talent but the feeling coming out of Bournemouth is that he is not for a sale and they’ve been making similar noises about Alex Scott. Spurs are admirers of him. I would love them to go for Alex Scott and he may pick them being a Tottenham fan.”

Kroupi a ‘generational talent’

AFC Bournemouth defender Marcus Tavernier described Kroupi as a ‘generational talent’ earlier this year. He said: “I’ve said before, Junior is a generational talent.

“The club has done an amazing job to pick Kroupi up. That boy has an unbelievable future ahead of him and today he showed why he’s such a good talent in the world of football.”

Kroupi has also been linked with a move to PSG, and there have been reports that he prefers a move back to his home country, France, but much will come down to who can convince Bournemouth to sell. An £80million price has been floated, but if the Cherries do not want to sell, it’s likely any interested club will have to pay over the odds.
