Piers Morgan Claims Jude Bellingham Has Been Better Than Lionel Messi

Published

on

Outspoken British journalist Piers Morgan has caused more backlash this week with his controversial Lionel Messi claim ahead of England’s clash with Argentina on Wednesday night. The Three Lions are through to the semi-finals of the World Cup for just the fourth time in their history after a 2-1 win over Norway this weekend.

But they will need to beat a side inside the top four of the FIFA World Rankings in a major international tournament for the first time if they are to realise their potential to end a 60-year trophy drought. In Atlanta, Georgia, this week, Thomas Tuchel’s side faces their toughest challenge yet against the reigning champions, with the winner facing either Spain or France in the final.

As has been the case on many occasions this summer, weather disruptions are expected for the match. But what may be a bigger threat for England is the weight of expectation after years of near-misses under Gareth Southgate, and Morgan’s latest comments certainly won’t help muffle the optimism that grips those at home.

Indeed, Morgan – who has long been one of Cristiano Ronaldo’s biggest supporters, especially through the intense criticism the former Manchester United forward has faced this summer – has clearly got carried away with his hopes of England bringing football home this week. Posting to X, he wrote (see the full post below):

“All this fearful talk of ‘how will England stop Messi’ is ludicrous. The much more pertinent question is how will Argentina stop Bellingham? He’s the real superstar of this World Cup.”

While Jude Bellingham has been in imperious form this summer, nobody comes close to the brilliance of Messi as he supercharges his nation’s plea for a second successive World Cup win after going three decades without. That’s reflected by the uproar Piers’ social media post caused, as one X user remarked: “I pity those who still take you seriously.”

Another user added: “Bellingham has been outstanding, but writing off Messi before kickoff has never aged well for anyone,” as a third wrote: “This guy is stuck in his own bubble.” Elsewhere, another concluded: “I would call him a clown, but at least clowns are funny. This is just pathetic!”

Nothing Should Take Away From Bellingham’s Heroism

Based on statistical performance, Bellingham still ranks as the fourth-best player at this year’s World Cup. That’s come going for a midfielder that was being mooted to drop to the bench in favour of the in-form Morgan Rogers before the tournament started.

No player in his position has come even remotely close to matching his tally of six goals, with his efforts often coming in England’s hours of need. While a poor season at Real Madrid shifted the spotlight away from him, the label of ‘best midfielder in the world’ has been put firmly back on him.

Messi’s eight goals and two assists in six matches still reigns superior. But that should not take away from the job Bellingham has done to get his nation dreaming of glory once again.

Logan Paul Slams Alexander Sorloth For Not Passing to Erling Haaland

So much of the 2026 World Cup went so well for Norway. They managed to go further than ever before, making the quater-finals, but that joy turned to misery as they lost to England 2-1 in a very tight game.

Erling Haaland was very much the nation’s main man as he bagged seven goals at the tournament, inclduing one in the Last 32 win over Ivory Coast and an unforgetable brace against Brazil in the Round of 16.

The Manchester City star was unable to find the back of the net against England, however, but was not helped in one moment, when it looked as though teammate Alexander Sorloth could have put him through on goal. The 30-year-old instead looked to shoot and saw the chance come to nothing.

Sorloth has faced plenty of criticism over the incidnet, and US influencer, wrestler and boxer Logan Paul has now weighed in on the debate.

Sorloth Speaks Out on Haaland Incident

Speaking after the game, Sorloth explained why he failed to pass to Haaland. He told the press:

“I take a touch and look up, and then I see that [John] Stones blocks that pass. Then I take another touch, and that is too bad. I wait for him to make a move instead of me making him make a move.

“The only thing I want in that situation there is to pass to Erling. Then it feels like that pass isn’t there, and then I go for the shot.”

True football fans will understand the sport is a game of fine margins and while Sorloth didn’t quite get things right in the moment, many other players would have made the same mistake. Even so, the reaction on social media has been extreme to say the least.

Things have got so bad, in fact, that his girlfriend, Lena Selnes, has released a statement addressing the hate that her partner has received. She shared a collection of abusive messages and wrote:

“The World Cup and football bring a lot of joy, but also a lot of hate. I don’t really want to give it any attention, but feel the need to after comments like this.

“Hope everyone can think a little extra before making such comments, regardless of the situation.”

Amid all the fall-out US influencer Paul – who has been closely watching the World Cup this summer – has offered his thoughts on Sorloth. He didn’t exactly show a lot of symphathy, as he blamed Norway’s defeat to England on this one incident, forgetting that football is a team sport made up of many individuals and many moments.

Taking to social media, he wrote:

“I keep seeing that clip of the dude not passing the ball & I’m so gutted for Haaland The entire country of Norway lost because one guy wanted to have a moment.”

Paul’s comment went viral on social media, sparking millions of views and over one thousand comments as fans debated the topic.

Norway took the lead through Andreas Schjelderup before Jude Bellingham made it 1-1. The game then went to extra time where Bellingham scored again, finishing from close range after a poor piece of goalkeeping from Orjan Nyland. Soon after, Haaland had to come off as he was dealing with a fitness issue, and could only watch on from the sidelines as his countrymen lost 2-1.

England will now play Argentina in the semi-final, with France taking on Spain on the other side of the draw.

‘Real Reason’ He Was Sacked as England Test Coach

Published

The ‘real reason’ why Brendon McCullum was sacked as England Test match coach has been revealed. The 44-year-old New Zealander was informed of the decision on Saturday, ending his time in charge of the country’s red-ball side after just over four years.

Although he will remain in charge of both England’s One-Day International and T20 teams, McCullum has been axed from the Test helm following a dismal run of form in the longest form of the game.

Ironically, McCullum was originally brought into the England set-up solely as the Test coach, before his initial success in the role saw him offered both white-ball roles.

The End of the ‘Bazball’ Era

His highly aggressive brand of Test cricket, branded ‘Bazball’, was tipped by some to be revolutionary to the format. However, after winning 10 of his first 11 Tests at the start of his reign, England’s policy of seemingly trying to hit every ball to the boundary started to have a negative effect on the team’s results.

This led to a change in philosophy, which saw naturally aggressive players trying to bat in a more responsible way. The England Test side never fully committed to the shift, though, and often looked well out of their depth in what would turn out to be the final year of McCullum’s time in charge.

England have won just two of their last 10 Test matches, a run that included a dismal 4-1 Ashes defeat away in Australia, during a series where McCullum’s men never threatened to be competitive.

However, a new report suggests it was not solely England’s Test results, or the sudden retirement of now former captain Ben Stokes, that led to the ECB’s decision to strip McCullum of his role.

Why McCullum Was Axed as England’s Test Match Coach

Per the Daily Mail, England cricket chiefs were concerned about McCullum’s inability to find his side’s identity once his early success fell away.

Names such as Jimmy Anderson, Stuart Broad, Jonny Bairstow and Chris Woakes were instrumental in those early days, but when they were either dropped or retired, McCullum seemed to have no clear plan on how to replace them in the Test set-up.

The numbers back up that statement, with nine of the 41 players in the Bazball era playing no more than one Test. Meanwhile, eight played five or fewer. Of the six who played more than 25, Ollie Pope and Zak Crawley were ultimately dropped, while Stokes walked away at the end of the recent series defeat to New Zealand.

Following Stokes’ departure, the England Test side is in need of a major reset, and ultimately, those in power felt that McCullum wasn’t the right man to spearhead a revival.

The England Test team now finds itself without a captain or coach, just a year away from a home Ashes series. Oddsmakers suggest that Andy Flower, who coached England to their most-recent series wins in Australia and India, is the favourite to take up the role once again.

The Zimbabwean is believed to be keen to retain his lucrative job as head coach of Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the Indian Premier League if he is to become England’s new Test coach. With the IPL operating in its own window in the annual cricket calendar, it is entirely possible that Flower could juggle both jobs.

McCullum, meanwhile, will now focus all of his attention on England’s white-ball efforts, with a 50-over World Cup on the horizon next year.

Man Utd Make Lewis Hall Their Transfer Priority After Youri Tielemans

Published

Manchester United are said to have already decided on their defensive priority as they look to add a left-sided defender this summer. Michael Carrick and his recruitment staff has spent much of the summer so far concentrating on midfield signings, with two or three midfielders needed to add depth and replace Casemiro.

A deal for Ederson fell through due to a medical United did not like the look of, but the Red Devils have managed to snap up Andrey Santos from Chelsea, while Youri Tielemans is on his way from Aston Villa. Another midfield signing could follow.

Another area United need to improve is the left-back position, with Luke Shaw, who has had injury troubles aplenty, the only senior left-back on the books, while youngster Diego León is also on the books. Carrick needs another high-level option there, and it seems as though that will be the next priority after Tielemans.

Man Utd identify Lewis Hall as left-back priority

Newcastle United left-back Lewis Hall celebrating

As Carrick looks to land a left-back, TeamTalk have claimed that Newcastle United star Lewis Hall is the main priority, although he is joined on a shortlist by another. The report claims United believe Hall is willing to make the move to Old Trafford, and that he is comfortable competing with Luke Shaw and ultimately replacing the senior star, even if that doesn’t happen immediately.

It’s claimed Hall would like the idea of working under Carrick, and that the Red Devils are confident of striking a deal with the player. The problem is that Newcastle have already sold Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon this summer, while they could yet lose Bruno Guimaraes, meaning another sale from the starting XI is unlikely, at least not at an affordable price.

United are also said to have had Eintracht Frankfurst’s Nathaniel Brown on their shortlist, but he has been snapped up by Bayern Munich, while Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde is also being considered. But on that front, Spanish reports earlier this summer claimed Barca were happy with Balde, and they decided not to sign Marc Cucurella as a result, so movement there would be surprising.

Hall a ‘terrific player’

Speaking on Match of the Day last year, pundit Danny Murphy said of Hall after his performance against Everton: “We haven’t seen enough of Lewis Hall, he’s a terrific player. He loves to get forward, and he gets in these [attacking] areas so often. He causes problems for Everton. You’ve got Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye, who are super players, playing well, who spent most of their time defending because of the Newcastle full-backs.

“The quality he’s got with his crossing, we’ve seen before, hence the fact he’s played for England already. For Newcastle moving forward, having these two fit and available to play gives them so much more.”
