Why Argentina’s President Refuses to Watch World Cup Final With Donald Trump
Argentina face Spain in the World Cup final on Sunday evening, with one notable figure set to be missing from the stands at MetLife Stadium — the South American nation’s president, Javier Milei, has decided not to attend the showpiece event for a bizarre reason.
Lionel Scaloni’s men booked their place in the final by beating England in dramatic circumstances on Wednesday in Atlanta. The Three Lions led La Albiceleste until the 85th minute, before a long-range effort from Enzo Fernandez and a header from Lautaro Martinez turned the game on its head at the death.
The reigning world champions will meet La Roja in the final, after Luis de la Fuente’s side knocked tournament favourites France out of the competition in Dallas on Tuesday.
Argentina will be bidding to add a fourth star to their shirts, but they’ll do so without the support of their country’s political leader in New Jersey.
Argentina’s President Won’t Be at World Cup Final
Typically, the primary political figures of the countries involved in the World Cup final will attend the game. They’ll be situated in a hospitality seat, alongside the leader of the host nation.
US President Donald Trump reportedly invited Milei to watch the match with him in New Jersey, but the Argentine respectfully declined.
While Spanish President Pedro Sanchez is expected to be in attendance at MetLife, his Argentine counterpart has revealed that he won’t be, out of superstition.
“No way [will he attend],” Milei told El Observador, a local Buenos Aires radio station (via talkSPORT).
The South American politician has watched all seven previous games at his presidential residence in Quinta de Olivos in the northern region of Argentina’s capital city, and he plans to watch the final at the same venue.
“I’m going to keep watching all the games from Olivos,” he said.
“Since it’s cold and I don’t turn on the heat, I wear an oil company-branded jacket [whilst watching the game]. The day of the Switzerland game, it made me really hot. I took it off, and they scored a goal against us.
“I put it back on and never took it off again.”
Argentina Presidents Historically Don’t Attend World Cup Matches
While some might laugh at Milei’s superstitious behaviour, it’s a long-running theme with Argentine presidents and the World Cup.
In 1990, former President Carlos Menem visited La Albiceleste squad just before they suffered a shock opening loss against Cameroon. They bounced back from this disappointing result to reach the final, which they eventually lost to West Germany.
However, the damage was done for Menem and Argentine presidents for years to come. The then-president was dubbed a jinx, and no sitting Argentine president has since attended a single national team game — or at least their attendance hasn’t been publicly documented.
More generally, many Argentinian people are superstitious, with ritualistic beliefs and habits a core part of their culture, particularly when it comes to following the men’s national team.

Tottenham Agree Personal Terms to Sign Savinho
Tottenham Hotspur have agreed personal terms with a star who plays like Lamine Yamal as they close in on another statement summer signing.
Tottenham have stunned their Premier League rivals with the business they have done so far this summer, breaking their transfer record twice to beat some of their rivals to the signatures of the likes of Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali in two club-record deals.
The duo have transformed Spurs’ midfield, and it has been the same story in defence, where Andy Roberston, Marcos Senesi, Jan Paul van Hecke and Martin Dubravka have all arrived.
Now, the north London outfit want to make changes to their attack too, with a new left-winger the transfer priority as well as a new centre-forward, with doubts remaining over the future of Richarlison at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Tottenham were said to have seen Morgan Rogers as their ‘dream’ target, although the 23-year-old’s most likely destination was seen as Arsenal to link up with the Premier League champions.
However, Chelsea produced a shock hijack on Saturday as they agreed a £117m deal to prise the England international away from Aston Villa, with Spurs focusing on other targets.
Tottenham Agree Personal Terms With Savinho
Tottenham have recently decided that Manchester City winger Savinho is the target they really want to land, and they are stepping up their efforts to bring him to the capital.
One journalist suggested earlier this week that Spurs ‘will sign’ the Brazil international in a deal worth around £65m, with one insider claiming that the north Londoners have reached a verbal agreement with City over a deal.
The player is keen on the move and personal terms are no issue and are already in place, according to TEAMtalk, 12 months after Tottenham tried to bring the 22-year-old to the club when Thomas Frank was manager.
It appears as though a deal is getting closer for Savinho to join Tottenham, and it would be a promising signing given Pep Guardiola has often praised him, while Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson claimed he reminded him of Spain and Barcelona star Lamine Yamal in terms of style of play.

Tottenham Joined by Arsenal in Junior Kroupi Race
Chelsea’s hijack of Arsenal’s move for Morgan Rogers is likely to have big repercussions for the summer transfer window, and potentially for Tottenham.
It has been reported that Spurs will target a move for Bournemouth forward Eli Junior Kroupi even if they complete a move to sign Savinho, as they look to flex their financial muscle again this summer.
However, Arsenal will look at other targets now they won’t be signing Rogers, and GIVEMESPORT senior correspondent Ben Jacobs claims on X that one of those players is Junior Kroupi, who looks to have a huge future in the game.
The 20-year-old is on the radar of every big European club after a stunning breakthrough season in the Premier League, where he scored 13 league goals to help the Cherries qualify for Europe for the first time in their history.
Bournemouth don’t want to sell and his price tag will be high, and it remains to be seen whether Tottenham or Arsenal are able to reach an offer that will tempt the south coast outfit to perform a U-turn on their stance.

Adrien Rabiot Slams France Teammates in Stunning Interview After England Defeat
France’s 2026 World Cup campaign officially came to an end on Saturday evening when they were beaten 6-4 by England in their third-place match at Miami Stadium.
After their disappointing result against Spain in the semi-finals, Didier Deschamps named an understrength side against England in what was his final match as France manager.
While the likes of Michael Olise and Kylian Mbappe were in the starting lineup, fringe players including Rayan Cherki, Malo Gusto and Ibrahima Konate were given the opportunity to impress from the outset.
France were completely outclassed by their opponents in the first half as they went into the break trailing 4-0. Deschamps made four changes at half-time and Les Bleus were able to bring the game back to 4-3, but they could not complete a remarkable comeback as they eventually succumbed to a 6-4 defeat.
Adrian Rabiot Calls Out France Teammates
Adrien Rabiot has been a virtual ever-present for France in this summer’s tournament, and he was instructed to marshal their midfield once again against England. He played the full 90 minutes in his side’s defeat.
After the game, the 31-year-old gave a stunning interview where he called out some of his France teammates for their attitude. He told BeIN Sports, per 20 minutes:
“We started the first half quite shamefully. I saw behavior from some players that I had never seen before. It’s a bit disappointing, because it was the last match to do well in this competition.
“There is a lot of disappointment after the match we lost against Spain, but there was work to be done until the end, and we cannot be content to rush things like that.
“We talked at half-time, we said we needed to show some pride, and it was much better in the second half, because in the first half, some behavior was unacceptable.”
He added: “For the rest, we must highlight the coach, Guy (Stéphan), Franck (Raviot), Cyril (Moine) who did a tremendous job and brought this team back to the top with all the players. We would have liked to finish with a victory so that the coach could have a better send-off, but it does not tarnish the image he has with all the French people.”

Deschamps was asked about Rabiot’s comments in his post-match interview. He refused to call out any specific players but admitted that some ‘could have done better.’
He said: “It was me who made a mistake. I should have made choices from the start of the match and things might have gone better afterwards. After all, everyone is judged on their performances, but judging players, characters, different personalities, I’ve never done that in front of you, I’m not going to end up like that.
“Obviously (in this match), there are some players who could have done better. I wish them all the best.”

Romano Hints Arsenal Will Move to Sign Alvarez After Rogers Deal Hijacked
Arsenal could make a move to sign a £130m superstar for Mikel Arteta after a deal to sign Morgan Rogers was hijacked by Chelsea, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Arsenal‘s summer business had started to get going in recent days after they completed the free transfer addition of goalkeeper Illan Meslier, before agreeing a £34m fee with Club Brugge to sign prolific winger Christos Tzolis to replace the outgoing Leandro Trossard.
Arteta still wanted to land a high-profile left-sided attacker even after the Greek forward though, with Rogers the clear number one target.
GIVEMESPORT sources revealed earlier this week that the Gunners were ready to step up club-to-club talks and present Villa with an opening bid for the 23-year-old, but they have been beaten to the punch by their London neighbours.
Chelsea have agreed a £117m deal with Villa for the former Middlesbrough man, who is due to undergo a medical on Monday after the conclusion of the World Cup.
Rogers will link up with one of his best friends in football in Cole Palmer at Stamford Bridge, with Blues boss Xabi Alonso playing an instrumental role in the transfer.
Arsenal must now decide where they are going to turn next.
Romano Hints at Arsenal Move for Julian Alvarez
Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez has previously been described as a ‘dream’ summer transfer target for Arsenal and Arteta, as they look strengthen their frontline.
While he wouldn’t necessarily be a like-for-like alternative to Rogers, the Gunners clearly have the budget to make a big-money signing as they look to not only retain their first Premier League title since 2004, but also win their first ever Champions League having come so close to doing it last season.
Issuing an update on Arsenal and Alvarez on his YouTube channel on Saturday night, Romano hinted that the Gunners could move for the Argentina international, who was the subject of a rejected £130m bid from Real Madrid this summer, later in the transfer window.
He said: “Then another thing: it’s a separate story, but with Arsenal, keep a close eye on the situation of Julian Alvarez and Barcelona. It’s very tense between Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, as I’m telling you, and I’ve been telling you for weeks.
“Obviously, if Julian Alvarez can’t go to Barcelona because Atletico don’t want to sell the player to Barcelona, now Atletico are saying they don’t want to sell the player in general. But in case there is a broken relationship between Julian and Atletico, and at some point they decide to sell the player in August, Arsenal could still be interested in the situation and could still keep a close eye on Julian Alvarez.
“So we have to be very attentive to Arsenal now because losing Morgan Rogers is a big blow for Arsenal.”

Not only Alvarez, but Romano has also claimed that Arsenal have made contact in recent days over a potential move for RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande.
It was Liverpool who had identified the 19-year-old as their number one Mohamed Salah replacement earlier in the summer, before the player decided he wanted to join Paris Saint-Germain.
However, PSG are yet to close a deal with the Bundesliga outfit, who are demanding big money for their prized asset, which has seen the Gunners make fresh contact over a move.
