The 5 Tallest and 5 Shortest Players to Win the Ballon d’Or

Published

on

The Ballon d’Or is the most prestigious individual award in football, and its winners have come in all different shapes and sizes. From Lionel Messi to Fabio Cannavaro to Rodri, players with vastly different physical profiles and skill sets have been recognised as the best in the world.

Height, however, is an interesting anomaly in football. While towering players such as Peter Crouch and diminutive stars like Andrei Arshavin have enjoyed outstanding careers, extreme height is rarely associated with the very best players in the world.

But does size really matter when it comes to winning the Ballon d’Or? A look at the tallest and shortest players to claim the award suggests perhaps not. As per the official Ballon d’Or website, these are the tallest and shortest winners.

The Tallest Ballon d’Or Winners

5. Cristiano Ronaldo/Rivaldo – 1.87m (6’1.5”)

Among the tallest players to ever win the Ballon d’Or are Cristiano Ronaldo and Rivaldo — two prolific forwards who utilised their height to score a number of goals in the air.

Ronaldo has claimed the accolade five times, although he’s not won it since 2017. The Portuguese forward might have been tall, and while his aerial threat has always been a part of his game, his quality has extended far beyond just what he’s been able to do whilst jumping.

As for Rivaldo, the Brazilian legend wasn’t renowned for his ability in the air despite his size. He might have used his height to fend off defenders, but his skill was rooted in his superb technique.

4. Marco van Basten – 1.88m (6’2″)

It’s unsurprising that a big striker who operated as a multi-faceted target man makes this list. Standing at 6’2″, Van Basten was rangy, and this lent itself to being aerially dominant, even against the most physically aggressive centre-backs.

That said, this heading prowess wasn’t what made Van Basten special, like Ronaldo and Rivaldo. The Ajax and AC Milan sensation was elite technically, graceful with the way he moved, and boasted exceptional agility. This blend of attributes led him to three separate Ballon d’Ors in the late 80s and early 90s, and saw him score over 300 goals for club and country throughout his career.

3. Lev Yashin – 1.89m (6’2.5″)

It would be strange if the only goalkeeper to ever win the Ballon d’Or wasn’t among the tallest to collect the award. Lev Yashin, standing at 1.89 metres, won the accolade in 1963 after excelling for a dominant Dynamo Moscow side that won the Soviet Top League.

Ironically not especially tall for a keeper, Yashin’s outstanding reflexes and ability to command his box with authority are what caught the eye. He was a trailblazer for modern goalkeeping techniques back in the 60s, although his revolutionary methods haven’t resulted in more shot-stoppers being recognised as the best player in the world since he was.

2. Rodri – 1.9m (6’3″)

Rodri controversially won the Ballon d’Or back in 2024, usurping Vinicius Junior, who many felt was the deserving recipient, for the accolade. The Spaniard had come off the back of an outstanding season for Manchester City, winning a fourth straight Premier League title with the Citizens.

Surprisingly, only one Ballon d’Or winner has been taller than the deep-lying playmaker. As is a recurring theme on this list, Rodri hasn’t really relied on his height for his greatness, instead using his technical ability and intelligence to dominate the best midfielders on the planet.

That said, being 6’3″, his size has probably helped him have a greater picture of what’s going on around him, reigning over the majority of his opponents.

1. Ruud Gullit – 1.91m (6’3″)

Ruud Gullit and Ron Atkinson

Unlike many others on this list, Chelsea, AC Milan and PSV Eindhoven legend Ruud Gullit used his height and physical prowess to his advantage. The Dutchman was known for his imposing stature and powerful athleticism, overrunning his opponents by using these physical talents.

He won the Ballon d’Or in 1987, shortly after signing for European powerhouse Milan. This was at a time when athleticism and stature were becoming more important at the top level, as players started taking more care of their bodies, sports science was developing and being out of shape was becoming less acceptable, and Gullit was the embodiment of this.

The Shortest Ballon d’Or Winners

5. Luka Modric – 1.72m (5’7″)

Nowadays, Luka Modric is viewed through the lens of being diminutive and being outstanding largely because he has less prominent physical gifts. For a player to be as good as the Croatian has been at his size, stature and with his relative lack of physicality, they have to be astonishingly proficient technically.

That said, while he still makes the top five smallest players to have won the Ballon d’Or, he’s not that short in the grand scheme of things in football history. However, in the modern day, Modric’s size at the very top level is something of an anomaly, and he defied what everyone believes a footballer needs to have athletically by being so good.

4. Lionel Messi – 1.7m (5’7″)

Surprisingly, there are three players shorter than Lionel Messi who have won the Ballon d’Or. Like Modric, part of what has made the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner so special is how his size hasn’t prevented him from running rings around some of the most powerful athletes in the world.

In a way, Messi is the archetypal diminutive playmaker, yet few have come close to even remotely matching his level.

The Argentine could add to his collection of Ballon d’Or later this year after mesmerising fans at the World Cup earlier this summer. He’ll be among the favourites for the award, alongside the likes of Lamine Yamal, Rodri and Kylian Mbappe.

3. Raymond Kopa – 1.68m (5’6″)

Kopa Trophy

Raymond Kopa is one of the greatest players to have ever played the game, despite being so short. The forward used his size to weave in and out of rigid defensive units, and this tricky playing style led to him scoring 147 career goals.

Winning the Ballon d’Or in 1958, he also made the podium in 1956, 1957 and 1958, making him the most coveted footballer of the late 50s, alongside Alfred Di Stefano.

Kopa was so good that an award was named in his honour in 2018, the Kopa Trophy — handed to the best young player on the planet every year.

2. Allan Simonsen – 1.65m (5’5″)

Denmark striker Allan Simonsen

Not a name many will be familiar with, Allan Simonsen won the Ballon d’Or in 1977 after leading Borussia Monchengladbach to the Bundesliga title and the European Cup (Champions League) final. He was the star player in this great Glabach side, scoring over 100 goals throughout his time at the German club.

This form earned him a move to Barcelona in 1979, where he continued to excel and earned another spot on the Ballon d’Or podium in 1983. Simonsen may not have been blessed with height, but he used this to his advantage as his pace and timing of runs saw him constantly find the back of the net with late darts in behind the opposition defence.

1. Omar Sivori – 1.63m (5’4″)

In the modern day, a 5’4″ player might struggle to reach the very highest level. While players of this size can certainly still have excellent careers, it’s difficult to envisage someone of this stature ever being good enough to win the Ballon d’Or, given how important physicality is today.

When Omar Sivori won the award in 1961, people were slighter and shorter on the whole. That said, he still stood out among the best athletes of the time, bobbing and weaving his way past thuggish defenders in Argentina and Italy.

Sivori scored 180 goals in Serie A, wining the Italian title three times with the Old Lady.

Arsenal Foolish to Sell ‘Special’ Talent After Community Shield Win vs Man City

Published

on

By

Arsenal cruised to a 3-0 win over Manchester City in the Community Shield and one of Mikel Arteta’s men put in a superb performance that will surely convince the higher-ups to keep him.

A dominant display from the Gunners saw them ease to victory at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. Riccardo Calafiori gave the Premier League champions the lead in the very first minute with a tidy finish.

Kai Havertz added a second 27 minutes later, before Martin Odegaard came up with a moment of brilliance to make it three-nil in the 48th minute. Arteta’s side controlled proceedings and toyed with a lackluster City side playing their first competitive game since Enzo Maresca replaced Pep Guardiola.

As is often the case with the Community Shield, managers give opportunities to players not yet considered guaranteed starters before the season begins. Arteta and his bosses were reminded of just how talented one of their exit-linked stars is.

Arsenal 3-0 Man City: Lewis-Skelly Shut Down Exit Talk

Arteta started new signing Bruno Guimaraes in a midfield three alongside Odegaard and Myles Lewis-Skelly. The latter’s future has been uncertain in recent weeks amid reports claiming he has been offered to Manchester United and Chelsea.

Lewis-Skelly had looked set to follow in Bukayo Saka’s footsteps and be the next superstar to emerge from the club’s Hale End academy. But he found game time hard to come by last season, with Arteta preferring Calafiori at left-back.

The 19-year-old is thought to want to stay at the Emirates and fight for his place in Arteta’s team. Judging from today’s showing, he is more than up for the fight, putting in a marvelous performance that makes the Gunners’ apparent stance over potentially selling him extremely confusing.

Lewis-Skelly, whom Declan Rice called ‘very special’, set up Calafiori for the opener, putting the Italian through on goal with a clever pass after fighting off pressure from defenders. That was just the start of a perfect response to rumors over a summer exit, showing his manager and the hierarchy why he should be going nowhere.

Midfield Myles is The Way Forward

Lewis-Skelly might not reclaim the left-back starting berth from Calafiori, but he should be considered for a starting role in Arteta’s midfield. His press resistance, along with his spatial awareness, is hugely effective, and he drifts into pockets before picking out a teammate, as he did assisting the opener.

The England international could shine in a midfield three alongside Guimaraes and Rice. All three possess different profiles that could make for a well-balanced unit.

Guimaraes operates more as the deep playmaker, controlling the tempo and using his creativity. Rice is the engine room, working box-to-box and helping on the defensive side aswell as making late runs into the box.

Jamie Carragher is one of many who can’t understand why Lewis-Skelly could be sold. He responded to his assist with a post on X:

“MLS role in that Arsenal goal! Are Arsenal really looking to push him out.”

There’s certainly a lot for Arsenal fans to like about their team’s performance in their win over City. Lewis-Skelly’s showing will have delighted them and potentially ensured his name is no longer mentioned in the rumour mill.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s All-Time Greatest 11 Includes Man Utd and England Legends

Published

on

By

Naturally, having won 13 Premier League titles with Manchester United, Sir Alex Ferguson has managed a plethora of outstanding players.

From Cristiano Ronaldo to Wayne Rooney to Roy Keane, the Scotsman has overseen the careers of some of the best players to ever grace the game. While he is widely regarded as the greatest manager of all time, his success wouldn’t have been possible without possessing so many talented footballers.

Ferguson enjoyed a hugely successful stint at Aberdeen, as well as a fruitful spell at St. Mirren back in the 80s, but his most noteworthy tenure is obviously his illustrious 27-year reign at Old Trafford.

The Theatre of Dreams played host to an exceptional crop of players through multiple generations. With that said, here is the greatest XI of players who played under Sir Alex.

Goalkeeper and Defenders

gary neville martin keown

In between the sticks, Peter Schmeichel narrowly pips Edwin van de Sar into the line-up. While both players were excellent, Schmeichel’s legacy as arguably the undisputed greatest goalkeeper in Premier League history means he edges the Dutchman. The Dane’s heroic shot-stopping led United to five Premier League titles, a Champions League, three FA Cups, a League Cup, four Community Shields and a UEFA Super Cup. Few goalkeepers come close regarding silverware amassed with one club.

At right-back, Gary Neville’s longevity and defensive solidity secure him a spot in this prestigious XI. While the likes of Antonio Valencia and Rafael took the torch from Neville and shone later in the Ferguson era, neither player got close to the level of the Englishman. He retired having only played for the Red Devils, making 602 appearances in the process.

Rio Ferdinand’s exceptional defensive abilities mean he cannot miss out. After signing from Leeds as an astute defender who had some deficiencies, he improved to become one of the best centre-backs in the game throughout his spell in Manchester. Many might argue that Ferdinand’s partner in crime, Nemanja Vidic, should be alongside him in this eleven, but it’s hard to look past Jaap Stam.

Unlike some of the others in this team, Stam didn’t spend the majority of his career at Old Trafford. He signed from PSV Eindhoven in 1998, led the Red Devils to a treble in his debut season, before leaving for Lazio in 2001, just three years later. In that time, his imperious defensive qualities established the Dutchman as one of the best centre-halves on the planet.

On the left-hand side of defence, some may argue for the magnificent and eccentric Patrice Evra, but the legendary Denis Irwin cannot be overlooked. Named as the third-best left-back in Premier League history behind only Ashley Cole and Andy Robertson, the Irishman had it all and was an indispensable figure in seven separate title-winning sides.

Forming the double pivot in Sir Alex’s dream team are Keane and Paul Scholes. Not only do both players merit their places based on their accomplishments and ability, but they actually formed an extremely functional partnership in real life for several years for United.

The two players had the perfect blend of attributes to create a world-class midfield. Keane brought the defensive nous, protecting the back four with his tough-tackling and exceptional ability to read the game. Meanwhile, Scholes was United’s playmaker for two decades, orchestrating Ferguson’s side’s build-up with his breathtaking passing.

Off the right, Ronaldo couldn’t be ignored. The Portuguese arrived as an 18-year-old prospect and developed into a global superstar under Sir Alex. Boasting electric pace, fancy step-overs and an eye for goal, the legendary manager honed Ronaldo’s skills so that he could become one of the greatest players of all time in his last few years at United, and for over a decade after that.

On the other flank, Ryan Giggs’ presence in this eleven was inevitable. While he developed into a central player in his latter years, for the majority of his career the Welshman was a marauding winger who played 941 games under Ferguson, scoring 168 goals and winning 13 Premier League titles in the process.

Ferguson’s success ultimately derived from having several outstanding forwards who were elite at putting the ball in the back of the net. The likes of Robin van Persie, Dwight Yorke, Andy Cole, Mark Hughes and Ruud Van Nistelrooy don’t make the cut, which highlights just how good the chosen two were.

Eric Cantona, United’s enigmatic figure in the 90s, spent five years in the north-west and produced countless moments of magic along the way. His technical quality and intelligence were on another level.

Rooney, among the best strikers the Premier League has ever seen, was United’s poster-boy during the glory years, breaking the club’s goalscoring record and winning five league titles in the process.

Liverpool Fans Make Same Point About Jeremy Jacquet After Debut Performance

Published

on

By

Jeremy Jacquet scored on his Liverpool debut as the Reds played the second of their double-header friendly against Como on Sunday evening – but, besides getting on the scoresheet in a 2-0 win, the Frenchman has his new fanbase making another point about him.

Signed for an initial £55 million in February, with the then-Arne Slot side preparing for Ibrahima Konate to leave for Real Madrid on a free transfer, the former Rennes defender is now expected to take on a much larger role at Anfield, with injuries and sales leaving the squad looking thin on the ground in defence.

Partnering club captain Virgil van Dijk this weekend, those of a Liverpool persuasion got a perfect first glimpse at their new signing – and a strong verdict has now been cast ahead of the 2026/27 Premier League season.

Liverpool Fans Make Instant Ibrahima Konate Comparison with Jacquet

Ibrahima Konate

The ultimate yardstick for Jacquet’s success on Merseyside will be how well he compares to his predecessor, who, on his day, could be a world-class defender, but had the tendency to let his levels drop, making him an inconsistent figure for the Reds.

While it’s still very early days, many supporters were quick to suggest Jacquet, who had turned 21 last month, already looks like an upgrade on Konate. One X user remarked (watch his highlights below):

“Jeremy Jacquet is leagues clear of [Ibrahima] Konate.”

A second continued: “Jeremy Jacquet is looking an upgrade on Konate,” while a third wrote: “Don’t need to see more of Jacquet to confirm he is better than Konate.” Another highlighted: “The Kop already trying to get a Jeremy Jacquet chant going in the 15th minute after he makes a good tackle inside the area and then holds off a forward to clear.”

Elsewhere, a fifth concluded by waxing lyrical: “Jeremy Jacquet looks absolutely FANTASTIC. So, so good. The composure on the ball is ridiculous, the 1v1 defending has been excellent and he looks physically strong too. That’s MY centre-back, man.”

How Jacquet Performed on his Debut Statistically

Up until his halftime substitution, Jacquet was the highest-rated player, according to Sofascore, who scored him an 8/10, with only Tottenham-linked forward Cody Gakpo earning higher.

During an impressive 45 minutes, the young defender made six defensive contributions, including winning three of his five tackles, while he made three recoveries, one clearance, and won seven of his 10 ground duels – giving his partner a run for his money.

In possession, he was just as good. He completed one dribble, successfully completed nine carries, and scored from his one effort at goal. Adding to the composure he showed was his 93 per cent passing accuracy, which included three long balls.
