Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has gone all in on Ruben Amorim’s system at Manchester United, questioning his use of Amad Diallo as a wing-back.
The Red Devils have picked up some impressive results over the last few weeks and are currently unbeaten in four Premier League games, but Amorim is still being questioned. United currently sit in eighth position in the table after they picked up a point away from home against Nottingham Forest last time out.
Amorim’s system has come under heavy scrutiny since he arrived at the club, replacing Erik ten Hag last year, and it’s been quite a natural reaction from fans and pundits, with United struggling to pick up results. There have been signs of improvement this season, with Amorim sticking with his system regardless of their results and performances.
Carragher Questions Ruben Amorim System at Man Utd
Speaking on Monday Night Football, Carragher has continued to question Amorim’s system at Man Utd despite their results of late. Carragher has focused heavily on Amorim’s use of his wing-backs, questioning their impact on the team at the moment.
“I think the problem with this system is that when you think about wing-backs, and think about the weekend, Amad, he’s been getting questioned, ‘Oh he got caught out at the back post.’ But as a wing-back, you’re asked to be a full-back defensively, so Amad’s asked to be here and defend crosses at the back post — he got done by Gibbs-White — but then when he gets up here, he’s asked to be a winger. Now he is more of a winger, he’s probably more suited to that position, but then Dalot’s the opposite, where he may be able to deal with that better. But when he gets on the last line and they actually get the ball to Dalot, he can’t beat a man. He’s not going to play a clever pass, he’s not going to get a cross in.”
Amorim is likely to be continuously scrutinised until United are battling for European places again. Staying stubborn to one system can be admirable at times, but you have to consistently win football matches. Unfortunately for Amorim, he has little credit in the bank from his time in the Premier League so far, so some fans and pundits are going to take some time before they are won over.
It’s been an impressive run of games for the Red Devils, but teams like Nottingham Forest are where they need to win in order to be battling among the top four again.
