Florian Wirtz Records Stunning Stat During Liverpool 1-0 Real Madrid

Published

on

Arne Slot surely couldn’t have wished for a better week than the one he’s currently navigating. And while there’s still a nerve-inducing trip to Manchester City to come before it can be considered perfect, the early signs suggest that the Liverpool of last season are back and ready to compete for major honours once again. A 2-0 win over Aston Villa in the Premier League was impressive, and a 1-0 victory over Real Madrid in the Champions League has everyone on Merseyside salivating.

Reverting back to his old tactics board has worked wonders for the Reds, who had gone four league games without a win prior to their recent back-to-back triumphs. Andrew Robertson looks set to be a mainstay in the side once again, while Alexis Mac Allister – who scored the winner on Tuesday night – appears to have rediscovered his form alongside both Mohamed Salah and Conor Bradley, with the latter putting Vinicius Jr firmly in his pocket, where Kylian Mbappe was still comfortably residing after last season’s escapades.

It’s clear that last season’s squad, for now, are outperforming the new signings. But while it initially seemed as though Hugo Ekitike was the red herring in that assessment, Florian Wirtz is also beginning to settle into the system. One statistic – among many positives at Anfield in midweek – stands out as a reason to believe the German international can start repaying his £116 million transfer fee soon enough.

Stunning Florian Wirtz Statistic Emerges After Liverpool 1-0 Real Madrid

Florian Wirtz

Wirtz, who joined the Reds after winning back-to-back Bundesliga Player of the Year awards under Xabi Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen, was the subject of fair criticism at the start of the campaign. The 22-year-old appeared to lack the confidence to make any real impact on Liverpool’s midfield or attacking output and struggled to cope with the pace and physicality of English football.

However, after silencing some of those doubts with two assists in the 5-1 win over Galatasaray, he has since delivered his finest performance in a red shirt – an all-encompassing display from the left wing against the perennial Kings of Europe. While Dominik Szoboszlai ran himself into the ground in midweek, a stunning post-match statistic revealed that Wirtz had actually covered more ground than any other player at Anfield. See below:

Running 11.37 kilometres across an 8.5/10 performance that also saw him win five duels, regain possession seven times, and create more chances than anyone else, showed just how capable Wirtz is of being an influential player for Liverpool, on and off the ball. A luxury player it seemed at first to most, he is poetry in motion in possession and a bloodhound out of possession when at his best.

He may have stumbled out of the blocks, but his new supporters are quickly starting to hold him in high regard, with one Liverpool fan reacting to the aforementioned statistic by commenting on X: “Outrunning Szoboszlai is insane. Wirtz put in an insane shift today.” While a second added: “I knew Wirtz put in a shift but damn, he outran Szoboszlai. What a brilliant performance from Wirtz,” a third remarked (watch Wirtz’s full match highlights below):

“This is easily the craziest stat from the entire game. Puts to bed any question about his physicality, he won five duels and recovered possessions six times.”

Indeed, there’s still a long way to go before Liverpool are consistently back to their best, with two impressive wins far from enough to turn the tide of a season that has seen them lose seven points’ worth of ground to current league leaders Arsenal and bow out of the League Cup to Crystal Palace.

The Reds must now focus on not getting carried away and continue building momentum. A trip to second-placed Manchester City on Sunday afternoon could prove even tougher than the test they just faced against Real Madrid. But a third consecutive win against in-form opposition would send a clear statement that better days could be here to stay.

Tottenham Offered Chance to Sign Dusan Vlahovic

Published

Tottenham Hotspur have been offered the chance to sign a top star this summer alongside their pursuit of Bournemouth star Eli Junior Kroupi.

Spurs have completed six signings already this summer, bringing in Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, Martin Dubravka, Jan Paul van Hecke, Mateus Fernandes, and Sandro Tonali in deals worth in excess of £220m.

But the Lilywhites are still looking at other deals, with a mega offer being lined up to sign Kroupi despite Bournemouth not wanting to sell. However, the north London side are now looking at other forward options, which has seen them offered the chance to sign a household name.

Tottenham Offered Dusan Vlahovic

According to TEAMtalk, Tottenham have been offered the chance to sign former Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic on a free transfer.

Vlahovic, who has been described as ‘one of the best strikers in the world’, recently left the Serie A giants after his contract expired, and is now searching for a new club, ideally in the Premier League.

The 26-year-old is attracting big interest from Turkish giants Besiktas, but Spurs are understood to be keeping a close eye on the situation as they assess their own forward options for the new season. Richarlison is expected to depart, while Randal Kolo Muani has left following the end of his loan spell.

Kroupi remains the club’s top target for the striker role, which could see any move for Vlahovic put on the back burner as a result.

But with the Serbian international available on a free transfer, it’s a deal that could emerge as a bargain considering the major expenditure being put out by the ownership to strengthen other areas of the squad during this window.

Vlahovic Would Be Excellent Plan B

Dominic Solanke is currently the first-choice and only senior striker in the Spurs squad, but if De Zerbi is able to get his way and complete a deal to sign Kroupi, the expectation is that the Frenchman would be first choice.

Solanke would be excellent competition for him, and offer a different profile, but Vlahovic has got a much better goalscoring record throughout his career, and he is the type of profile who is a bit of a hybrid between them both.

The likelihood is that Vlahovic’s wages and the fact he wouldn’t be an automatic starter are going to be a hurdle that needs overcoming, but if Kroupi doesn’t arrive then it makes a deal much more feasible, and it’s one to keep an eye on while he remains unattached.

Kylian Mbappe Shares Statement After Paraguayan Senator’s Racist Attack

Kylian Mbappe has condemned Paraguayan senator Madame Celeste Amarilla’s “brazen racism” in response to her comments about the France striker.

Amarilla reacted to Mbappe’s spat with Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill following his nation’s 1-0 win over the South Americans at the World Cup. The Real Madrid star is said to have ignored the offer of a handshake and instead celebrated Les Bleus’ victory.

The 27-year-old scored the winner from the penalty spot in a feisty affair which saw players clash throughout. The Paraguayan players tried provoking Mbappe but he didn’t take the bait.

Mbappe’s actions after the game riled up Amarilla who responded to a post about the incident involving Gill. She wrote on X: “[Mbappe] is so dumb he didn’t even learn how to write; instead of mother’s milk he was sucking coconuts, and the most educated things he’s ever heard were chimpanzees. You should have shown him the finger, Orlando Gill — I do it in the Senate and nothing happens!!!”

Amarilla also took to Instagram with another controversial post about the Frenchman: “Cameroonian, colonised, pretending hard to be French, bitter, nouveau riche, arrogant and ugly. He was nervous and terrified the whole match, like his entire team — they couldn’t score a single goal, they won because of sh*t… The only thing many of us are complaining about with Albirroja is not having given him a slap across the face after the match ended. And I’m not even a football fan.”

Mbappe has now hit back at Amarilla with a statement on his X account describing the senator as a ‘despicable woman’ who is ‘unworthy of her position.’ He wrote:

“You are a despicable woman and unworthy of your position. You do not represent Paraguay, that country which has sweated passion and honor throughout the competition. Through your recklessness and your brazen racism, the entire world has already forgotten the journey and the historic effort that your players accomplished during this World Cup, making way for an incompetent woman who gives the worst possible image of her country. I will never allow people like her the freedom to spread their hatred and racism across the world.”

Mbappe has been one of the standout performers at this summer’s World Cup and his goal against Paraguay took his tally to seven goals in five games. The Paraguayans tried underhanded tactics to beat France, including several reckless challenges and petulant behaviour.

Ball Boy and Girls Salaries Revealed

Wimbledon is among the most lucrative tennis tournaments on the planet, but what are the ball boys and girls paid who help to ensure that every match at SW19 runs smoothly?

While singles champions take home a record £3.6 million and first-round casualties pocket £80,000, naturally, the youngsters on duty don’t make anywhere close to that sort of money.

However, that isn’t to say that the job isn’t highly sought after. The All England Club maintains a highly competitive selection process, pulling the vast majority of its 280-strong cohort from approximately 1,400 local school applicants in Year 9 and 10.

Training For Wimbledon Ball Boys and Girls Explored

Former holders of the role insist that the preparation for it mirrors a high-stakes athletic boot camp rather than a casual summer job. Training officially begins in February at local indoor facilities, requiring teenagers to master physical endurance, precise ball-rolling physics, and prolonged periods of immobility.

By mid-may, operations transition directly to the SW19 grass courts, where the teenagers work in strict, high-stress one-hour rotations under the scrutiny of millions of global television viewers.

“The training was intense and very physical. We practiced how to throw the ball perfectly to the players and how to stand still for long periods,” Alex Crockford, a former Wimbledon ball boy, told The Mirror.

Despite the demanding nature of both the training and the job itself, it may surprise you to learn that the teenagers selected don’t technically earn a salary at all.

Those selected for this year’s tournament will perform under strict professional conditions for a flat expense stipend rather than a standard wage, highlighting the stark financial divide at the heart of the multi-million-pound tournament.

The around 280 teenagers that are present to smooth the operation of all 675 matches across the fortnight will receive just £200 to cover basic expenses.

Carson Branstine made a lasting impression at last year’s Wimbledon, but her bank balance wasn’t as you’d expect.

The flat rate, combined with the perk of keeping a luxury Ralph Lauren tournament uniform, has sparked contemporary debates over the extraction of elite, high-pressure labor under the guise of sporting tradition.

Despite the lack of an hourly wage or formal salary, the role remains a highly sought-after badge of honor across participating boroughs.

The minimal payout exposes growing friction within the current sports landscape. As Wimbledon’s global broadcasting rights and corporate hospitality revenues reach historical peaks, the event continues to rely heavily on a “prestige economy” that trades financial compensation for social cachet. While the young participants overwhelmingly express pride in their roles, industry watchdogs question how long a multi-million-pound entertainment product can ethically justify an unpaid workforce.
