Where Every Golden Boy Winner is Now
When looking to predict who will be among football’s next crop of global superstars, many will turn to the squads of successful youth teams, or to those who standout in youth international tournaments. However, these generally don’t prove to be accurately predictive of who will dominate the game for years to come.
Winners of the under-17 World Cup Player of the Tournament in recent iterations of the competition include Kelechi Nwakali, Kelechi Iheanacho and Julio Gomez – certainly not household names in today’s game. However, winners of TuttoSport’s Golden Boy Award tend to become pretty special.
The accolade is voted on by journalists, and seeks to identify the best player under the age of 21 and playing in one of Europe’s major leagues. While most who have claimed the award have enjoyed illustrious playing careers, there have been a few whose careers have stagnated, and they’ve ultimately failed to fulfill their potential. GIVEMESPORT have taken a look at every single Golden Boy winner, and where they are now.
2003 – 2009
Van der Vaart, Rooney, Messi, Fabregas, Aguero, Anderson, Pato
The award’s inaugural winner, Rafael van der Vaart, was applauded for his exceptional year for Ajax in 2003, which had seen him explode into one of the most prolific young midfielders in world football. He’d go onto have an impressive career playing for the likes of Hamburg, Real Madrid and Tottenham, before hanging up his boots in 2019. Nowadays, the Dutchman is mostly commonly seen voicing his critical opinions on an array of players as a pundit for football broadcasts in his home country, having seemingly given up post-retirement careers in coaching and darts.
In 2004, Wayne Rooney was named Golden Boy after bursting onto the scene with Everton and completing a switch to Manchester United. His achievements in the game need no introduction, and he has pursued managerial endeavours, despite struggling in roles at D.C. United and Birmingham City. Now, the Old Trafford legend is focusing on his punditry career. Recently, it was announced that the ex-striker was to host his own show, ‘The Wayne Rooney Show’.
After Rooney held it aloft, Lionel Messi was granted the award in 2005, and he’s certainly not looked back. Still playing at a high level, arguably the greatest footballer of all time plies his trade in Miami, and has scored 40 goals in 45 games this season. All in all, he is the club’s all-time top goalscorer with 74 strikes in 84 matches.
Cesc Fàbregas, 2006’s Golden Boy recipient, retired from playing in the summer of 2023, and is overseeing Como’s meteoric rise in Italy as manager. Winning promotion to Serie A last campaign with Gli Azzuri, the former Arsenal, Barcelona and Chelsea midfielder has ambitions of forging a lengthy and successful coaching career.
Manchester City’s record goalscorer, Sergio Aguero, won the award in 2007, and now spends most of his days streaming to his 4.8 million Twitch followers after becoming one of the deadliest hitmen in the history of the Premier League. The Argentine was forced into a premature retirement in 2021 due to a heart condition, and is yet to explore a career in punditry or coaching.
Perhaps the most surprising winner of the Golden Boy award became an assistant manager in Turkey after calling it time on his playing career. Ex-United midfielder, Anderson, worked for Adana Demirspor and had been at the Süper Lig club in some capacity after retiring in 2019, but he is now without a job in management. In September 2025, it was reported that Andeson was ordered to serve time in prison after failing to pay his child maintenance.
The notorious wonderkid Alexandre Pato was the final man to win the award in the noughties. Without a club after being released by Sao Paulo earlier this year, Pato is still only 36 but officially hung up his boots in January 2025 after failing to reach the heights expected of him. In the infancy of his career, he was mooted as the next big thing.

Balotelli, Gotze, Isco, Pogba, Sterling, Martial, Sanches, Mbappe, De Ligt, Felix
Mario Balotelli was the first Golden Boy winner of the 2010s, and the Italian striker’s career has arguably not gone in the direction he might’ve once hoped. As of the summer of 2025, he was still playing in Serie A for Genoa after joining them on a free transfer in the summer; at the time of writing, however, the one-time Champions League winner is without a club.
Mario Gotze was once Europe’s hottest young playmaker, but the Bundesliga journeyman has settled for a squad role at Eintracht Frankfurt in his early 30s. Meanwhile, the German’s Spanish counterpart, Isco, who developed at a similar time to Gotze, is fairing slightly better, taking up a talismanic role in his home country with Real Betis.
2013 Golden Boy winner Paul Pogba became a free agent after being released by Juventus in recent years following a doping ban. The suspension came to an end in March 2025, and he’s moved back to his homeland to join AS Monaco, though he is yet to play a game for Sebastien Jean Pocognoli’s side. The French midfielder was recently spotted in training ahead of his debut.
Raheem Sterling’s exploits for Liverpool in 2014 earned him the prodigious accolade – but now, he’s ostracised by curent employers, Chelsea, after a failed loan stint at Arsenal. 2015 recipient Anthony Martial continues this trend of winners whose careers have declined slightly earlier than they’d have hoped, with the Frenchman currently earning his Mexico with Monterrey. Things didn’t start swimmingly, though, and the Frenchman is struggling to adapt to football at his new club.
Renato Sanches stormed into the footballing landscape in 2016, but hasn’t really kicked on since. The former Swansea City loanee is now plying his trade in Greece for Panathinaikos, on loan from parent club Paris Saint-Germain. One of the more successful winners, Kylian Mbappe’s 2017 antics have carried forward into years of exceptional productivity. And although he struggled to hit the ground running upon his arrival to Real Madrid, he’s now firing on all cylinders.
The only defender to win the Golden Boy award to date, Matthijs de Ligt, left Bayern Munich for Manchester United in the summer of 2024, and is now being looked at by the Red Devils’ new boss Ruben Amorim to spearhead the Portuguese’s long-term project at Old Trafford. The Dutchman claimed the accolade a year prior to another who has also earned his corn in England’s top flight: Joao Felix.
Felix – a 48-cap Portugal international – was viewed as a supreme talent in 2019, and subsequently earned a big money move to Atletico Madrid from boyhood club Benfica. Years of stagnation in the Spanish capital saw him wash up at Chelsea, but he eventually didn’t make the grade in the English capital. As of the summer of 2025, he has lined up alongisde compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo at Al-Nassr.

Haaland, Pedri, Gavi, Bellingham, Yamal, Doue
Manchester City’s Erling Haaland – who is, without a doubt, widely regarded as one of the best strikers in world football – was nominated as the Golden Boy winner in 2020, after enjoying an outstanding year with Borussia Dortmund. Now the most prolific number nine in Europe, the record-setting Norwegian has scored 17 goals in 13 matches this season.
In 2021 and 2022, two Barcelona midfielders emerged from La Masia and flourished on the La Liga and continental stage. First Pedri, and then Gavi, both Spanish midfielders have struggled with injuries in recent campaigns, but they both remain key to Hansi Flick and his entourage when they are fit and raring to go.
Jude Bellingham‘s incredible 2023 was rewarded with the Golden Boy title, and he’s continuing to impress at the Bernabeu with Real Madrid, albeit his astounding goal-scoring exploits have hit something of a brick wall. Lamine Yamal – an inevitable recipient of multiple Ballon d’Or – then followed in Strourbridge-born Bellingham’s footsteps the following year.
Yamal became a global superstar overnight, winning Euro 2024 with Spain, leading a resurgent Barcelona and, of course, the Golden Boy award in 2024. Desire Doue – whose name, when translated into English, means ‘Desired Gifted’ – is the latest winner of the prestigious award – and he can attribute his part to play in Paris Saint-Germain’s maiden triumph in the Champions League as to why.

Man Utd Tell Tchouameni to Take Pay Cut to Join as Talks Held
Manchester United are pushing to make some major upgrades to their midfield this summer, and that has led them to look at a number of different options in the transfer market.
The Red Devils have already agreed a £38m deal with Atalanta to sign Brazil star Ederson, with a medical scheduled to take place imminently after his World Cup participation came to an end over the weekend. But the club missed out on top targets Elliot Anderson and Matheus Fernandes, which has led them to look elsewhere.
The club are keen to ensure that Casemiro is replaced adequately, while Kobbie Mainoo’s emergence means that he needs a new partner and cover in the squad, and Manuel Ugarte’s serious knee injury has increased the need for signings. That has seen talks held with other candidates.
Man Utd Hold Talks With Aurelien Tchouameni Camp
One of those targets has been Real Madrid superstar Aurelien Tchouameni, with the club viewing him as a ‘dream target’ to come to Old Trafford and bolster the squad.
However, as it stands there have been a few hurdles to overcome to get a deal done, and Romano has revealed in his latest YouTube video what the Reds have told the France international’s camp about what it would take to get move completed.
“Internally at Manchester United, Tchouameni has always been seen as the perfect signing for midfield,” he said.
“Top player, elite mentality, world class, so they consider Tchouameni as the perfect replacement for Casemiro. Then the point here is on two topics.
“The first one is the salary. Tchouameni is on a very big salary at Real Madrid, and at the moment the understanding is that Manchester United already made [it] clear to those close to Tchouameni in the contacts they had over the recent months, that the only way for Tchouameni to go eventually to Man United is on a different salary. So that’s the first issue.
“The second issue is Real Madrid. At the moment, Man United are yet to receive any green light from Real Madrid to go and negotiate for Tchouameni.”

Tchouameni Deal Looks Highly Unlikely
Man Utd want Tchouameni, but it doesn’t seem to be the most mutual feeling, with the France international very clearly preferring to keep his place at Real Madrid.
It remains to be seen how Jose Mourinho feels about the 26-year-old, and that could see things open up later in the window, but trying to convince a top player like that to take a pay cut seems like a very strange way to convince him to make the move.
Should he be made available, there is likely to be plenty of big interest in his services, and United will have to be able to compete financially, or they will face being left in the dust once again just like they were with Anderson and Fernandes.

Iran Football Federation Delight as US Exit World Cup
There have been so many talking points during the 2026 World Cup, and the biggest of them have related to co-hosts, the United States. They have now exited the tournament after a 4-1 loss to Belgium, but expect headlines to rumble on.
The build-up to that game was packed full of drama as key man Folarin Balogun was handed a red card in the Last 32 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina, but after intervention from Donald Trump, FIFA overturned the red card, allowing the striker to start against Belgium. That wasn’t enough to help the US, though, as they scored just once, crashing out at the Round of 16.
Many will feel footballing justice was served as Mauricio Pochettino’s men were thumped 4-1, and it appears as though the Iranian Football Federation have certainly enjoyed the result. Iran’s participation in the tournament has been one of the other key controversies of the 2026 World Cup.
Iran Delighted as USMNT Lose 4-1 to Belgium
The conflict between Iran and the US had made for concerning headlines in the lead-up to the World Cup, and it was unclear if they would even be able to come into the country to play matches. The Iranian Football Federation spoke out a number of times as they made it clear how hard Trump’s government had made it for players and key staff members to get visas into the host nation.
In the end, Iran had to move their World Cup base camp from Tucson, Arizona, to Tijuana, Mexico. Not only that, but when playing their group games in the US, they were even forced to immediately fly out of the country and back to Mexico once their matches had finished.
With those issues, and so many more in mind, it’s no wonder that Iran have now released a rather pleased statement following the USMNT’s exit from their own competition. As quoted by the Telegraph, a spokesman for the Iranian Football Federation reacted to the co-hosts’ exit by saying:
“Now the whole world is dancing to celebrate politics’ humiliating defeat by football.”
Iran likely would have also enjoyed the post made by the official Belgium social media account, which shared a picture of players celebrating a goal vs the US, alongside the caption: “Overturn this.”
FIFA Issue Statement on Referee Called ‘Very Suspect’ by Donald Trump
World football’s governing body issue statement on the referee whose integrity has been called into question by the US President
Iran Captain Was Left Unhappy With FIFA President Gianni Infantino
During the tournament, Iran captain Mehdi Taremi spoke strongly about FIFA, taking aim at the inaction of president Gianni Infantino. He said: “We always complained about these things since the beginning, it’s a disaster World Cup. A disaster. As professional players in a professional competition, it’s not right… it’s not fair… if it’s fair for FIFA, okay, good for them. But it’s not fair. Who wants to help us… no one helps. No one.
“Who has to solve this problem for us? Who? FIFA? I don’t know. USA. I don’t know – just mention one name for me. [FIFA president Gianni] Infantino came to [our locker room] the first game [against New Zealand] and said we will solve every problem here, but actually FIFA did nothing.”
Iran drew against New Zealand, Belgium and Egypt in the three games, finishing third in Group G, which wasn’t enough to see them qualify for the knockout stages. After exiting the World Cup, they released an emotional statement thanking the ‘wonderful people of Mexico’ for their hospitality, while also praising the media for fairly covering the ‘unfair and unsportsmanlike treatment’ of their delegation.

Newcastle Now Moving to Sign ‘Incredible’ Johan Manzambi After Steur
Newcastle United are now making their moves to upgrade their squad this summer, and they’re already on to their next target for the window after agreeing a deal.
The Magpies have signed Even Jaouen and Bazoumana Toure during the transfer window, while it emerged that they have agreed a surprise deal for Ajax star Seun Steur to strengthen their midfield following the departures of Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali for a combined £170m.
But despite those deals being done, the Toon are now ready to step up their interest in another top target in the coming days, as they look to get back to the Champions League.
Newcastle Moving for Johan Manzambi
According to David Ornstein, Newcastle are now ready to make a deal for Switzerland star Johan Manzambi in the coming days.
Manzambi, who has been described as ‘incredible’, has lit up the World Cup with his performances in central midfield, and that has attracted the attention of a number of top clubs across Europe.
The club have held talks with the player’s reps about a move to St James’ Park and are understood to be the frontrunners for his signature, but they are now prepared to make a move by opening up club-to-club talks with Bundesliga side Freiburg.
Manzambi is understood to be keen on making the switch to the Premier League side, and Newcastle are prioritising a move for him at this stage of the window, as they look to get ahead of the competition.
Ornstein reports that Newcastle are in the strongest position to complete a deal, although it’s claimed that they want to lower the £50m asking price at this stage.
Howe Rebuilding Newcastle Midfield
The big talk this summer around St James’ Park was that a rebuild was needed, and Howe believed he was in the perfect position to oversee it.
With Gordon replaced by Toure, attention now turns to replacing Tonali, and it seems that Howe feels that Manzambi and Steur can do that job, despite their age and lack of experience at the highest level.
With those signings though, it becomes imperative that they keep hold of captain Bruno Guimaraes, amid big interest from Arsenal, to keep things together and help carry over the transition the squad will be going through.
