Every Country Qualified for First Time

Published

on

The 2026 World Cup, hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, is fast approaching ahead of the June 11 kick-off next year.

In the 23rd edition of the tournament, it will be the first World Cup to feature 48 countries in competition for the coveted trophy, with 42 teams already securing their places.

For those nations who failed to cement their automatic qualification place, an opportunity remains with the 2026 World Cup play-offs in March to book one of the final six illusive spots at the tournament.

For some of those who are already making travel plans to North America in the summer, it will be their first time ever competing at the beautiful game’s blockbuster event.

Teams Who Have Qualified for their First World Cup

Uzbekistan (Asia)

Asian nation Uzbekistan were the first of four teams never to have played at the World Cup before to qualify for the 2026 tournament in North America, following their draw against the United Arab Emirates in June, cementing their spot with a game to spare.

The White Wolves were led by coach Timur Kapadze for their qualification efforts, who oversaw his country qualify for the first time in their footballing history ten years after the former midfielder earned his 119th, and final, cap for his country.

Over the years, Uzbekistan have suffered several heartbreaking exits from World Cup qualifiers, with defeats in the final stage of continental qualifiers for both the 2006 tournament in Germany and the 2014 Brazil World Cup.

Thankfully for the Central Asian nation, now led by 2006 World Cup winner with Italy, Fabio Cannavaro, their current generation will be the first to fly the Uzbek flag at the world’s greatest footballing tournament.

Manchester City defender Abdukodir Khusanov is the shining light in the Uzbekistan side, and he will be desperate for performances akin to his iconic head coach to spearhead his side’s efforts in North America.

Jordan (Asia)

Two hours after Uzbekistan cemented their place at the 2026 World Cup, fellow Asian nation Jordan did so, to become the second debutants to reach next year’s 48-team tournament.

A commanding 3-0 victory over Oman, courtesy of a hat-trick from top scorer Ali Olwan, and Korea Republic’s 2-0 win over Iraq saw Jamal Sellami’s side reach their maiden World Cup competition, a mere 40 years on from the country’s first ever qualifying campaign.

Al Nashama were a surprising commodity in the qualifiers, finishing runners-up in Group B behind unbeaten Korea Republic, having lost just twice in ten group outings.

Cape Verde (Africa)

Following on from Jordan, African nation Cape Verde became the third debutants to secure their place at the 2026 World Cup, courtesy of their 3-0 triumph over Eswatini in October.

Cape Verde, one of the smallest (by land area) and least populated countries to ever qualify for the World Cup, and did so under the stewardship of head coach Bubista, who was understandably emotional as fans, players and staff embraced to rejoice in their maiden qualification.

As quoted by BBC Sport, Cape Verde head coach Bubista said after qualification:

“Giving this happiness to these people is enormous. It’s a special moment in this celebration of the 50th anniversary of our independence.”

Cape Verde, a former Portuguese colony, gained independence in July 1975, and now another momentous moment in the small country’s history has occurred with their first ever qualification for the World Cup.

Curacao (North America)

Curacao completed a stunning unbeaten qualifying campaign to secure their first-ever spot in the World Cup tournament, cementing top spot in Group B in the third round of the Concacaf qualifiers to become the first Caribbean island to feature in the global competition.

On Tuesday evening, Curacao, a country populated by between just 155,000-185,000 people, secured a goalless stalemate against Steve McClaren’s Jamaica to book their spot for next summer’s tournament in North America.

Led by former Rangers and Sunderland manager Dick Advocaat, Curacao became the smallest nation to ever qualify for the World Cup, which came in dramatic fashion fitting for their illustrious qualification.

With the imperative tie still deadlocked, Jamaica were awarded a penalty in the closing moments after a foul by Jeremy Antonisse on Dujuan Richards. However, referee Ivan Burton’s on-field decision was subsequently reversed by VAR, seeing the small country of Curacao breath a collective sigh of relief, followed by jubilation.

After a ten-game unbeaten run in their outstanding campaign, scoring 15 goals in the process, the Blue Wave will be hoping to ride the wave of maiden qualification joy when they venture to North America next summer, buoyed by their historic feat.

Man Utd Want Aurelien Tchouameni Amid Mateus Fernandes Hijack

Published

Manchester United’s efforts to improve their midfield ranks may have hit a stumbling block, as Mundo Deportivo reports that a transfer hijack from Real Madrid and former boss Jose Mourinho could force the team to change course.

It comes as talks have ramped up over new potential midfield additions, with the Red Devils keen on adding some quality in possession heading into next season.

Several targets have been on the cards, with a deal already agreed to sign Ederson from Atalanta as just the first addition of a few expected in the middle of the park.

The next arrival is unclear as things stand, but Man United have been locked in talks to sign Mateus Fernandes, a target who is now the subject of interest from Real Madrid.

Man United Transfer Domino Effect

According to the report from Mundo Deportivo, Real Madrid are set to push for a deal to sign Fernandes from West Ham this summer, with Mourinho keen to land the Portuguese international.

It comes as a potential hijacking of a deal that Man United have been attempting to complete for the past few weeks, with talks held in an attempt to secure the midfielder.

Real Madrid’s inclusion could make for a tough negotiating period ahead, especially when it comes to convincing the player in the coming weeks.

However, there is a knock-on effect, as the report adds that Aurelien Tchouameni is likely to leave if Fernandes is signed by Los Blancos this summer.

That could open a pathway where Man United miss out on one target, but land another as a result, with the Red Devils poised and ready to strike into action.

The Red Devils have been heavily linked with a move for Tchouameni, and a deal could now become available for the star, but at a considerable price.

The report claims that a “substantial offer” will be needed for Man United to land the Frenchman, with those funds likely to help the side pursue other moves in the transfer market.

Fernandes is clearly a player with plenty of potential, but with two Premier League relegations in consecutive seasons, it’s understandable why teams may be reluctant to pay such a big price tag for him.

With Real Madrid making a move, it could prevent Man United from making a mistake in landing him, and offers a chance to land an upgrade in Tchouameni.

Fans have given an instant reaction to Ronaldo’s performance.

The midfielder has been described as “the best DM in the world”, and for good reason too. The 26-year-old has nearly 200 appearances for Real Madrid, which is no small feat, while he is a regular for France on the international stage.

Adding someone approaching the peak of their career who has been at the highest level with even more to come sounds like an ideal move for Man United.

Thomas Tuchel ‘Begs’ FIFA to Make Change After England 4-2 Croatia

Published

Thomas Tuchel has called on FIFA to implement an immediate change following England’s 4-2 win over Croatia on Wednesday night.

The Three Lions began their 2026 World Cup campaign in impressive fashion at the Dallas Stadium in Texas.

Harry Kane gave England the lead in the 12th minute from the penalty spot. Martin Baturina equalised with a stunning strike 10 minutes before half-time before Kane netted his second of the match.

Tuchel’s men were dealt a blow moments before the interval when Petar Musa made it 2-2, much to the frustration of England’s coaching staff.

“A complicated and confusing first half from us, really,” England assistant coach Anthony Barry said during a frank half-time interview with ITV. “I think a lot of nervous energy early on. Maybe that should be accepted, and maybe expected in the opening game of a World Cup.

“From there, then we made some decisions where the energy was not free in our mind, playing long when we should play short, playing short when we should play long, really not playing through the gaps so not allowing us to accelerate our game the way we wanted to.

“Then you think the penalty would free us up, allow us to play more like us, look more like ourselves, but again we fall back into some fearful patterns, and yeah… we’ve always been able to rely on set pieces.

“We get the second goal again. We’re hoping that’s the moment that would allow us to move forward in the game, but okay, we concede the second goal later on, and now we have to speak about that at half-time.”

Whatever Tuchel and his coaching staff said during the break clearly had the desired effect. England were the superior side in the second half and won the game thanks to excellent goals from Jude Bellingham and substitute Marcus Rashford.

“I thought it was a game of two halves. In the first half, we were OK,” Harry Kane told ITV after the match. “[We were] really disappointed to concede in the way we did. I thought we dropped off.

“Credit to the manager, he gave us a speech at half-time and said if we lose, we lose in our way, and I think we saw that in the way we came out in the second half.

“We went full gas and they couldn’t live with it. Credit to everyone for the first game of the tournament.”

While Tuchel was pleased with his side’s second-half display, he was far less happy with a pre-match incident involving the photographers.

The German tactician said his experience was “ruined a little bit” by a wall of photographers who obstructed his view of the national anthems and has called on world football’s governing body to sort the situation out for next time.

“I have to tell you something. I’m begging FIFA to change the position of the photographers in the national anthem, because I could not see my team,” Tuchel was quoted as saying by BBC Sport.

“It was a very special moment today, and I was standing in front of a wall of 50 photographers and I could not see one single player. It ruined a little bit my experience today.”

The England boss added: “It is very emotional. Listen, when I was young, and even when I started coaching, this was too big to dream of, to have this kind of a career.

“I felt the spirit, and what it means to be part of a World Cup. It’s just amazing, and I felt very, very alive the last two days. I didn’t want to be anywhere else in the world than here.”

Tuchel has not sung God Save The King – England’s national anthem – since he was appointed England manager in January 2025.

He initially said that he must “earn the right” to sing it, but has hinted that he will do so if England reach the 2026 World Cup final on July 19.

Luka Vuskovic Pushing To Leave Tottenham

Published

Tottenham face the prospect of losing a promising player this summer, as reports claim that he is now pushing to leave the club in the transfer window.

It comes as the hierarchy at Spurs are overseeing an important transfer window for the club, as they look to get the club back where they belong at the very top of the Premier League once more.

Incomings have been on the agenda so far, with two signings already completed, while a fee has been agreed with Brighton for Jan Paul van Hecke to make him the third arrival.

Talks are ongoing to sign Savinho for the forward ranks, while there is interest in Sandro Tonali to help improve the midfield area.

While Tottenham are keen to improve the squad, there are concerns that some important players could leave this summer, with uncertainty now surrounding the future of Luka Vuskovic.

Luka Vuskovic Pushing For Tottenham Exit

Tottenham have strengthened their defensive options this summer, but those signings could now force an exit for Vuskovic over the next few weeks.

According to journalist Alex Crook, the 19-year-old is now pushing to leave Spurs, as he searches for more guaranteed game time without being sent on loan again.

Vuskovic has been the subject of transfer interest from Brighton, who have had an offer in the region of £35 million rejected in discussions separate from the North London club’s talks to sign Van Hecke.

It’s unclear whether the Seagulls will return with an offer for the Croatian international, while he remains unhappy at the prospect of staying at Tottenham.

It comes as a potential blow for the club, who have been keen to maximise the potential of Vuskovic as one of the most promising defenders for the future.

His return from Hamburg brings plenty of questions over his future, which will need to be answered in the next few weeks.

Tottenham Advantage In Vuskovic Future

As Vuskovic faces doubts over his future, Tottenham appear to hold almost all of the cards to decide on what his next steps will be.

Spurs have a deal until 2030 for the defender, meaning they have plenty of time on their side and there is no need to force a deal this summer.

Tottenham are pushing to sign a new midfielder this summer, with a big-money deal potentially on the cards.

Add to that his need to develop, and Tottenham have a clear advantage in deciding the future of Vuskovic, whether that is on loan or with the club.

An exit could raise some valuable transfer funds, especially for a player who is not currently proven, but any fee must be sizeable and well beyond the £35 million currently on the table.
