In Vancouver Whitecaps vs LAFC, Son and Müller continue intriguing history
When the
Vancouver Whitecaps and
Los Angeles FC meet in Saturday night’s Western Conference final, it will resume one of the MLS’ more frequently played postseason fixtures in recent seasons.
It will also see two stars collide who have some intriguing competitive history of their own, with none of it previously coming on this side of the Atlantic.
Vancouver’s Thomas Muller and LAFC’s Son Heung-Min will meet for the 10th time in their careers across club and international competition when they take to the pitch at BC Place.
They’ve both been crucial to their sides’ success (see the stats in the image). And moreover, they’re no strangers to facing each other on even bigger stages.
From their early days competing against each other in the Bundesliga, to one mano a mano
UEFA Champions League clash, to a meeting at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, here’s a look back at how the two fared in direct competition.
Bundesliga Dominance
Müller mostly got his way when his Munich sides faced Son in the league
Müller and Son played directly against each other seven times during the five seasons they spent as Bundesliga rivals, and Müller’s
Bayern Munich sides posted a record of 5W-2D-0L in those occasions.
Remarkably for two players who were fairly prolific scorers, the two men only scored one goal between them during those meetings, when Müller got the second during a 3-0 victory on November 3, 2012.
Son would finally earn a league win against Bayern in his final time facing Die Roten with Leverkusen, but Müller didn’t take part in that one.

Son Sinks The Germans
At the 2018 FIFA World Cup, his insurance tally sealed one of the tournament’s biggest upsets
Son didn’t have much team success in Germany against its most decorated side, but he got some revenge when his Korea Republic Football side faced Der Mannschaft in both teams’ final group game at the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
The Koreans had already been eliminated from knockout phase contention heading into Matchday 3 in a difficult Group F that also included Mexico and Sweden. But more surprising was how
Germany entered the fixture needing a victory and some help to progress.

With the Germans needing goals in the second half, Müller came on in the 63rd minute for Leon Goretzka to try and provide the four-time World Cup champions a more attacking posture.
Instead, they conceded twice in second-half stoppage time, including a memorable tally from Son that made it clear beyond doubt the Germans would go no further. It also sealed South Korea’s first-ever competitive fixture win over Germany in three all-time meetings.
Müller’s Last Big Trophy
Son’s Spurs barely troubled the Bayern side that won the 2019-2020 Champions League
Of all the honors Müller won as part of Germany’s most decorated club, perhaps none were more special than his second Champions League title, captured at the end of an extremely unusual 2019-2020 season that concluded in the relatively early days of the Covid-19 pandemic.
In the group stage, Müller’s Bayern twice beat Son’s
Tottenham Hotspur, but the German legend only played in the latter affair.

It was a relatively low-stakes affair, with both sides already assured progress to the last 16, and Bayern having virtually wrapped up the top spot in the group. Even so, Die Roten were clinical if not overwhelming, easily defeating Spurs 3-1 to continue what would go down as one of the great UCL campaigns of all time.
By the time it was over, Bayern had won all 11 matches it played en route to the title while outscoring its foes by an astonishing 45-8 margin.

John Terry Names England’s 4 ‘World-Class’ Players at the World Cup
John Terry has never been shy about sharing his opinions, and his verdict on England’s World Cup squad was vintage Terry. Blunt, confident, and guaranteed to get people talking.
The Champions League winner has shared his thoughts on numerous occasions on a range of topics. He’s been outspoken on how he doesn’t even think Lionel Messi is the greatest Argentine player ever, let alone the best footballer ever, and during Enzo Maresca’s short-lived reign at his beloved Chelsea, he criticised the Italian’s tactics and his habits surrounding squad rotation.
Speaking on Piers Morgan Uncensored alongside Simon Jordan, the former Chelsea captain made a bold claim: That only four England players are truly world-class. It’s a take that’s sure to get the conversation going among fans of the Three Lions.
The Four England Players John Terry Trusts
The quartet Terry did single out represents the spine of what England should be built around this summer. Jude Bellingham has been described as a generational talent who hadn’t even turned 20 before he became one of the best midfielders in the world. Declan Rice has developed into exactly that too, a commanding box-to-box force whose influence over Arsenal’s Premier League title win and Champions League final run has been nothing short of impeccable.
Joint England 11 of Current Stars & Golden Generation – After Gerrard ‘Losers’ Claim
Would the former Three Lions skipper make a combined XI?
Reece James, when fit, offers a level of quality at right-back that few nations in the World Cup can match, often working in an inverted role and getting involved with the attack in a way that few players can do, whilst displaying strength and discipline when called on defensively.
And Harry Kane, for all the noise around England’s system and how they’re predicted to set up, remains one of the most lethal finishers England has ever produced. Terry described his importance when responding to Morgan’s question over how reliant the Three Lions are on the Bayern Munich man:
“If he gets injured we are in trouble, regardless of his goals, he’s a big presence and the captain of our side.”
“I think we have the best striker in the World Cup, and I firmly believe he’ll be the top scorer in the World Cup”
Watch the discussion about England’s world-class four (12:40 onwards):
John Terry Doesn’t Consider Bukayo Saka “World Class”
The elephant in the room, though, is Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka. When pressed by both Morgan and Jordan on why Saka didn’t make his world-class cut, Terry’s reasoning came down to his end-of-season output, suggesting the winger didn’t quite hit the levels expected of someone in that bracket, whilst at least acknowledging his injury struggles. It was a reserved critique rather than a dismissal, but a critique nonetheless.
2026 World Cup Simulated in Full – England Go Far
The results of all 104 matches this summer have been simulated – and a fascinating tournament has been predicted.
What made it more nuanced was what followed. Morgan put it to Terry that when Saka is at his best, he’s as good as anyone in his position in the world. Terry agreed, but only went as far as “potentially.” Not a no, but far from a yes. It suggested Terry sees Saka as a player on the cusp of that level rather than one who’s firmly established himself there.

Whether or not the world-class label strictly applies is, in some ways, beside the point. What Terry’s comments do is frame exactly where the bar sits, and for Saka, the 2026 World Cup may well be his chance to clear it.

Diego Maradona’s Slammed FIFA President Gianni Infantino in 2019
So much of the 2026 World Cup story so far has unfortunately been about Gianni Infantino. The FIFA president has spent the entire build-up playing sycophant to United States President Donald Trump, even though Canada and Mexico are also co-hosts for the tournament.
Despite that, he’s been unable or unwilling to get Trump to soften his intensive border control restrictions and open up the door for all those – players, fans, staff, and officials – connected to World Cup nations to enter the US. One of many examples saw Somali referee Omar Artan turned away upon arriving in Miami, despite having a visa to come into the country.
In response to the criticism, the ever-unpopular Infantino did not help his cause when he told the journalist to ‘chill, relax.’ The Swiss-born 56-year-old has been FIFA president since 2016 and has long had his detractors, with one of those being football legend Diego Maradona.
Diego Maradona Quit FIFA Legends Role After Dispute With Gianni Infantino
Maradona is best remembered for his iconic performances at the 1986 World Cup, as he led Argentina to glory in Mexico. His two league titles in Italy with Napoli, as well as trophy-winning spells with Barcelona and Boca Juniors, helped cement his place as one of the greatest players in football history.
Having such a high status within the sport, Maradona was part of the FIFA Legends team. However, in 2019, the Argentine great quit his role on the programme, blaming mistreatment from Infantino.
Indeed, the former Napoli man – who passed away in 2020 at the age of 60 – spoke with great anger about the FIFA president. He claimed he was treated like a ‘dog’ and consequently resigned on the spot:
“They put us [in a hotel room] with (former Dutch player, Marco) van Basten and another player. And they treated us as if we were little dogs that only needed to be fed and that’s it. A total lack of respect.
“That’s why I resigned. And now, I will start revealing what I know about this new FIFA.”
Maradona then took aim at FIFA’s deputy general secretary Zvonimir Boban (who resigned later that year for unrelated reasons), challenging him to a fight. The Argentine was unhappy after an alleged misunderstanding between himself and Boban at the hotel where members of the FIFA Legends programme were staying.
Maradona slammed Infantino for sending Boban to deal with the issue, saying: “I would like to say to Boban that if he wants to look good, let’s go to a (boxing) ring. He shouldn’t have come to the hotel and got angry.
“The worst part is that Boban was sent by someone. And this someone is Infantino. I am not a 20-year-old kid, I am 58. It hurts me because I believed in these people. Now I don’t believe them anymore.”

Maradona Felt Infantino Was Just as Bad For FIFA as Sepp Blatter
At the time, 2019, Infantino had been in charge of FIFA for three years. The administrator had taken over from former president Sepp Blatter in 2016, who departed amid controversy. Indeed, Blatter had been banned from football for six years in 2015 by the world governing body’s own ethics committee for approving a £1.3m payment to UEFA president Michel Platini in 2011.
The ruling also meant that Platini withdrew from the race to become FIFA president, allowing Infantino to take the crown. Fast-forward to 2026, and a recent criminal complaint has now been made against the currrent FIFA boss, in which it’s claimed that Infantino and others “worked to exclude [Platini] from the race for the presidency of FIFA”.
Amid these allegations of shady behaviour, it’s eye-opening to see Maradona’s remarks about
Infantino at the time. Perhaps most notably, in 2019, he claimed that FIFA had not ‘changed a bit’ since the departure of Blatter and the arrival of Infantino:
“I sent a letter to Infantino in which I resigned from (the post of) being captain of (FIFA) legends. Since Blatter and [former Argentina Football Association president, Julio] Grondona left, FIFA hasn’t changed a bit. No change.”
A decade into Infantino’s presidency, some would argue not only have things not got better since the days of Blatter, but they’ve got even worse. World Cup games, for example, have become essentially unaffordable for the average fan. Indeed, a category one ticket for the final cost about $1000 in Qatar 2022, but will now set supporters back over $6000 in 2026.

Josh Hokit Weighs In ‘Drunk’ For UFC White House Fight
All seven fights on the landmark UFC Freedom 250 card that will be staged on the grounds of the White House on Sunday night are now official.
Each of the 14 fighters on the card made their contracted weights at Saturday afternoon’s official weigh-ins, but one man stole the show in bizarre fashion before he stepped on to the scales.
UFC Freedom 250 was commissioned by the UFC to celebrate both the 250th anniversary of the USA and the 80th birthday of President Donald Trump. In a company first, the Octagon will be set up outdoors, as all the action will take place in a makeshift 4,300-seater arena on the South Lawn of the White House.
UFC Freedom 250 Main Events Explored
The card will be headlined by a pair of title contests. In the evening’s main event, Ilia Topuria will clash with Justin Gaethje for the undisputed UFC Lightweight Championship. At Saturday’s weigh-in, both men came in at the 155lbs required to make the bout official.
The co-main event sees the interim UFC Heavyweight Championship on the line as Brazilian legend Alex Pereira steps up to heavyweight to face Ciryl Gane.
Despite his move from light heavyweight, Pereira (251lbs) came in heavier than Gane (248lbs). The winner will meet full heavyweight champion, Tom Aspinall, in a unification bout in their next bout.
Both championship contests were made official without much in the way of drama. The same can’t be said for Josh Hokit’s weigh-in for his White House showdown with Derrick Lewis.
The undefeated Hokit has quickly made a reputation for his antics outside of the Octagon. The 9-0 American stayed true to form as he made his way to the scales on Saturday.
Hokit turned up to the weigh-in almost naked as he swayed back and forth, while claiming to be scared of Lewis, who holds the record for the most knockouts in UFC history.
UFC Fighter Weighs In ‘Drunk’ For White House Bout
Appearing to be ‘drunk’, the former American football player told media members in attendance:
“So what, maybe I was drinking last night. Who wouldn’t be? I have a giant black man that wants to knock me out. He has the most knockouts in UFC history… What are you guys looking at?”
In the middle of his statement, Hokit even seemed to throw up on himself. The 28-year-old had to be urged to stand still as he climbed on to the scales.
Eventually he did so, weighing in at 231lbs, making Sunday’s contest against Lewis (265 lbs) official.
In his three fights to date as a UFC fighter, Hokit has become known for his outlandish behaviour and there’s every chance that his newly-adopted downtrodden persona is simply a mind game heading into the biggest bout of his career.
Despite delivering one of the more unusual weigh-ins in UFC history, the fight is now official and Hokit will be intent on producing an eye-catching performance on Sunday night.
