How Much It Costs to Watch Football on TV Revealed

Published

on

A major change to UEFA Champions League broadcasting rights could see a further increase in price for footballing fans to tune into the European elite competition as of the 2027/28 season.

Reports emerged earlier this week that the Champions League will be shown on Paramount after the American media company won the rights at auction from TNT Sports, who have showcased the club tournament since the 2015/16 season.

TNT Sports will no longer be the leading Champions League broadcaster in the UK, after Paramount bid “considerably more” than the £1bn TNT currently pays, as per The Guardian.

Therefore, the American group will show every Champions League match except for the first pick of Tuesday night matches, which Amazon Prime is reported to have won.

Paramount’s coverage on their CBS Sports network, hosted by Kate Abdo alongside Thierry Henry, Jamie Carragher and Micah Richards, has proven popular with viewers, but the increased cost to watch every football match being broadcast will be less appealing to their audience of football fans.

UK police have warned that modified Amazon fire sticks also come at a cost of potential fraud.

Here, GIVEMESPORT runs through how much it costs fans in the United Kingdom every month to watch football on every platform, which may increase for maximum viewership after Paramount won the rights to host the Champions League.

Sky Sports – £35 per month

Sky Sports has become synonymous with football broadcasting in the UK, and it has played a major role in the increased visibility and commercialisation of top flight football since 1991, and continues to be a powerhouse today at a cost of £35 per-month for new customers for the most basic level of Sky and Sky Sports subscription.

Sky Sports’ website outlines that it costs £20-per-month for existing Sky TV customers, totaling a further £240-per-year, to pay for all of Sky Sports’ coverage on a 24-month contract, which includes the Premier League, F1 and a plethora of other popular sports.

Additionally, the subscription grants access to 215 live Premier League matches throughout the season, 80% of all televised matches, including every Sunday 2pm kick-off.

The addition of Sky Sports+ has allowed fans to access even more coverage each year, by enabling supporters to view games even if they are not being shown on one of the regular Sky Sports channels, making the Comcast company’s coverage of domestic football the most extensive.

Although Sky’s subscription is the most expensive on the list, it proves to be a popular option with supporters given the volume of Premier League matches that they show, and the punditry team consisting of Gary Neville, Jamie Carragher and Roy Keane making for entertaining viewing.

Amazon Prime – £8.99 per month

As of the 2025/26 season, Amazon Prime Video has reduced their football coverage, with the streaming giant no longer showing Premier League games, but retaining their rights to the first pick of the Champions League games on Tuesday evenings for the next four years.

An Amazon Prime subscription service is available on Amazon Prime Video, and for £8.99-per-month, viewers can catch all the football broadcast on the mammoth platform, as well as the vast ‘All or Nothing’ documentaries that have proven to be hits with supporters over recent years.

Regarding the news of Paramount’s move, Amazon Prime will continue to show a Champions League fixture every Tuesday in the UK from 2027 until 2031, with several of English football’s elite clubs, including Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool all in action.

TNT Sports – £23 per month

TNT Sports will continue to broadcast the Premier League until 2029, but will no longer be showcasing European football from next season after Sky Sports won the right to become the exclusive UK broadcaster for the Europa League and Europa Conference League.

As of now, TNT showcases the Champions League and Premier League, as well as various other sports, for the cheapest cost of £23-per-month by adding it on to an existing TV or mobile contract through BT Broadband, EE or Sky Sports.

However, in 2027, TNT will lose the Champions League, but supporters will still need to maintain their subscription to watch the early Saturday Premier League fixtures and the FA Cup, which is shared with the BBC.

BBC – £14.54 per month

BBC presenter Alex Scott

The BBC and TNT Sports share broadcasting rights for the FA Cup fixtures in the UK, with the final of the 2025/26 tournament set to be played at Wembley on May 16.

In partnership with TNT, the BBC will broadcast 14 FA Cup fixtures per season for the next four years, including the Wembley finale towards the end of the season, as well as two live matches from each round through to the quarter-finals and one semi-final.

Coverage of football’s most famous cup competition will continue on the terrestrial channel throughout the season, which is available to watch on TV or online via the BBC iPlayer for those with a TV licence fee, with BBC Two set to show Sutton United vs Shrewsbury Town next in the second round on December 6.

British television stipulations mean that viewers must pay a TV licence fee of £14.54-per-month to watch any programmes broadcast live by the BBC or on BBC iPlayer, with the BBC receiving the majority of the TV licence fee to fund their services.

Paramount – £4.99 per month

Paramount+ Logo

Moving on to the newest player in the Champions League, Paramount and their streaming service, Paramount+, is best known in the UK for showcasing films and series’, but will now move onto broadcasting the beautiful game in the UK.

Paramount already owns the Champions League rights in the United States, shown on its CBS channels with Henry et al, but the logistics of their venture across the pond is yet to be determined.

Whether Champions League games will be shown on Paramount+, an existing model, a new model or on Channel 5 (which Paramount own) remains to be seen, but what is for certain is that their foray into broadcasting the elite European club competition will come at an increased cost for supporters.

Currently, Paramount+ in the UK has three pricing tiers, with the basic service with advertisements costing £4.99-per-month, the standard service without ads costing £7.99 monthly and the premium service totaling £10.99-per-month, with those services accessible directly or via Sky and Amazon Prime.

To conclude, each of these subscriptions required by football fans to catch every moment of coverage will cost a bare minimum fee of £86.52 per-month combined with all platforms, which would cost a staggering £1038.24 across a 12-month period, and it will inevitably become even more expensive as of 2027.

Without factoring in the cost for the Women’s Champions League, which Disney+ own, and with media giants Netflix and DAZN also touted for future bids for footballing broadcasting rights, the cost of viewership for football fans is set to continue rising.

As a result of the increased costs of broadcasters, football fans have turned to ‘dodgy fire sticks’ to illegally access live action via jailbroken devices, but the latest potential punishments for using fire sticks to illegally stream sport continue to be the risk many fans choose to take given the lofty prices of combined broadcast subscriptions.

Man Utd Make Contact to Sign Bargain £22m Midfielder

It is no secret that Manchester United are in the market for midfielders in the summer transfer window.

United have already completed a deal to sign Ederson from Atalanta in a £38million move, with just the official confirmation still to come.

But the Red Devils have always maintained that they want to complete two deals in the middle of the park and that may become three if Manuel Ugarte is sold during the transfer window too.

United have been linked with a host of names already this summer. Elliot Anderson was the number one priority, but United have dropped out of the race to sign the Nottingham Forest midfielder, due to the huge financial package it would take to sign him.

They also did not want to enter into a bidding war with rivals Manchester City, who have already seen two bids of more than £100million knocked back by Evangelos Marinakis.

Aurelien Tchouameni, Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes have all been heavily linked, but all would take a hefty pay packet to get done too.

That may lead to United turning to alternative options and one has emerged in the form of Marc Casado.

The 22-year-old is still trying to find his feet at the Camp Nou, making 34 appearances in all competitions for Barcelona last season, albeit only 15 as a starter in Hansi Flick’s La Liga title-winning side.

Casado had made 29 starts in the previous campaign and was linked with a move away from the Catalan giants then too. Flick said last year: “I spoke with Marc Casado, I don’t see him wanting to leave the team, nor do I think I want that either. The season is long, and we want to achieve everything.”

It remains to be seen whether Flick’s or Casado’s stance has changed in a year, but Mundo Deportivo claims that United have already made contact over a move to sign the defensive midfielder this summer.

United have made enquiries with the player’s agent Jorge Mendes over a move to Old Trafford this summer, and with a £22million price tag on his shoulders, would come considerably cheaper than some of their alternatives.

In an analytical piece on the player back in 2024, Breaking the Lines called him a La Masia gem and said: “With a rare mix of technique and stamina, Casado has the potential to dominate the center of the pitch for Barcelona for years to come. As he keeps growing and improving his skills, there’s no doubt he is destined to become a key midfielder for Barcelona and can be one of the best defensive midfielders in the world.”

High praise indeed and it may be that he has to move to a different club to prove it.

Liverpool Add Brighton Star Yankuba Minteh to Transfer Shortlist

Liverpool have added Brighton and Hove Albion winger Yankuba Minteh to their transfer shortlist as a back-up option if they are unable to agree a deal for top winger target Yan Diomande, according to GIVEMESPORT senior correspondent Ben Jacobs.

After announcing Andoni Iraola as Arne Slot’s replacement at the start of the month, Liverpool have sprung into action in the transfer market and agreed a deal to sign Osasuna winger Victor Munoz out of nowhere on Wednesday night.

The Reds have beaten Premier League rivals Newcastle United to the signature of the Spain international, who is currently representing his country at the 2026 World Cup and has already completed a medical in America.

The Merseyside outfit have identified the wide positions as a key area they need to strengthen in this summer transfer window, with two new players expected to arrive.

The transfer plan is of little surprise given the Reds are losing Mohamed Salah, while Hugo Ekitike remains sidelined with a serious long-term injury.

The left-sided Munoz is set to be the first through the door at Anfield, but now club chiefs want to sign Salah’s long-term successor too.

Jacobs: Liverpool Add Minteh to Transfer Shortlist

Liverpool are working hard on a deal to sign RB Leipzig sensation Yan Diomande, who they have identified as the top target to replace Salah.

The 19-year-old enjoyed a stunning breakthrough campaign for the Bundesliga club, and he has carried his club form into the World Cup by winning the man of the match award in his first-ever appearance at the tournament as the Ivory Coast beat Ecuador.

While Diomande and Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola are near the top of the club’s wishlist, there are other names on there too, as revealed by Jacobs on the latest episode of GIVEMESPORT’s Market Madness podcast.

He said: “Diomande is the preference. Diomande is the one that Liverpool are working on, and it could develop as a consequence, but if it isn’t to be Diomande, I can give you some other targets.

“One, as we’ve known for quite some time, is Bradley Barcola and PSG, if they win the race for Yan Diomande, may suddenly become open to selling Barcola, even though, as of now, their stance is basically not for sale. But it’s not impossible if another player comes in that PSG’s perspective changes.

“Then there are some new names I can give you on the Liverpool shortlist as well. Said El Mala is one at Koln, Brighton’s Yankuba Minteh is another, and Lillle’s Matias Fernandez-Pardo is a third name. All three of those players are also on Liverpool’s radar and have been discussed and presented to new manager Andoni Iraola.”

Pace is Key for Liverpool and Iraola

There is one thing that all of these key targets have in common, and it is their explosive pace.

Minteh has been recorded as one of the top 10 fastest players in the Premier League previously, and Dutch football writer Lentin Goodijk has described him as being ‘lightning quick’.

While Liverpool and Iraola have some good technical forwards to pick from right now, the Spaniard obviously feels that he wants to add some real speed to his attacking options as they look to significantly improve on their performances this season.

Whether it be Diomande, Minteh or any of the other names on the shortlist, Liverpool’s plan is clear.

Tottenham Braced For £100m Transfer Hijack

Tottenham are bracing themselves for their transfer move to sign Sandro Tonali this summer to be hijacked by Manchester City.

Spurs have been one of the busier clubs already this summer, bringing in two new players on free transfers, as well as agreeing a deal for another.

Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson will link up with the Lilywhites from Bournemouth and Liverpool respectively after their World Cup adventures with Argentina and Scotland are over, while Jan Paul van Hecke looks set to arrive in a £52million deal from Brighton & Hove Albion.

Roberto De Zerbi and Spurs already mean business in the summer transfer window, with the Lewis Family vowing to back the Italian with investment into the squad.

GIVEMESPORT understands that the Spurs owners want to make a statement signing this summer and there are talks ongoing over a deal to bring Savinho to the club from Manchester City.

But any move for the forward would be surpassed by a transfer for Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali. Spurs burst to the front of the queue to sign the 26-year-old earlier this week when news emerged of a planned £80million to £85million move for the Italian.

Newcastle want in the region of £100million to sell the midfielder and there is a feeling around St James’ Park that he will depart the club this summer.

Tottenham are keen to get a deal over the line for Tonali to strengthen the middle of the park, with reports surfacing that the player is keen on the move to north London too.

But Spurs are not the only club interested in signing him this summer. Manchester United have been linked with a move, given their plan to sign two central midfielders this summer. Arsenal were linked in January, although a move never came to fruition and the Gunners could make another move this time around.

And then there’s Manchester City, who lost Bernardo Silva this week and could well say goodbye to Rodri too, with question marks over his future at the Etihad Stadium.

City’s attention for now, is on signing Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest, with two bids of more than £100million already rejected by owner Evangelos Marinakis.

Any suggestion that City are only planning for one midfield arrival appear to be wide of the mark, however. GMS understands that City, like Spurs, are in talks to sign Tonali and Teamtalk reporter Graeme Bailey has gone even further in saying: “I am told City made it clear during the process that they don’t see Tonali as some sort of alternative to Elliot Anderson – ideally they want both.”

Teamtalk also state that the Etihad Stadium would be his preference upon leaving St James’ Park this summer, if he cannot make the move to Serie A – an opportunity that has been removed because of the finances.

Tottenham may have thought they would have it all their own way in the race to sign Tonali with United put off by the price, City going all out for Anderson and Arsenal appearing to move for Manu Kone, but they may face a battle to complete the £100million deal after all.
